‘Life to the full’ By KATH GANNAWAY IT’S taken Warburton resident Rita Mentiplay a long time to get to 100, and she has made the most of every minute of it. Rita turned 100 on Sunday 15 May, and finished a busy week with a birthday party with family and friends. She was guest of honour at a surprise lunch by Upper Yarra Legacy Widows’ Social Club last week and on Tuesday 10 May got THE card from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Second. Australia is lucky to have Rita, and Warburton is especially lucky to have the Scottish-born lassie who arrived here in 1947 with husband David and daughter Greta. Their son, Sandy, arrived soon after. Her ambition as a teenager was to go to Canada, showing from an early age a keen sense of adventure, and an independent mind, which have stayed with her all her life. “David had to do a lot of talking to get me to Australia,” she said of her late husband, but said it quickly grew on her. “I’ve been very happy here,” she said, adding that moving to Warburton in 1953, was the start of a new era in her life, a new way of life, and many, many friends. After Dave worked in the town’s bakery for a number of years, the family, including Greta and her husband, Ken Miller, bought the bakery. Rita had always been a hard worker, working in a linen factory after leaving school and at Warburton hospital when they moved to Warburton. The bakery was the start of a whole new career. “I got up in the morning and sliced the bread through the machine, then Dave would load up the
van and I would deliver the bread all around the township,” she said. Rita said she knew virtually everyone, and everyone knew her. “Little kids especially loved the bread van,” she said. “We used to give them a bun ... they would be just waiting on the baker’s van.” Her connection with the town’s youngsters continued after they sold the bakery and she went to work at Warburton primary school. She was there until she retired at 65. Rita also established strong community connections as a member of groups including the fire brigade Ladies’ Auxiliary, Ladies’ Guild of the Presbyterian Church, the bowling club, Legacy, RSL, and, more recently, the Adventist Church. Surrounded by flowers and cards, Rita said she was a little overwhelmed by all the attention. “Lunch with the Legacy ladies was such a big surprise,” she said. Her Scottish heritage was recognised with a piper ensuring she made a grand entrance, and she had pride of place at the top of the table. “It’s just not me at all,” she said of being the centre of attention. The celebration on Sunday was equally wonderful, surrounded by family and friends. As for Her Majesty’s birthday wishes, as an avid royalist, she was just chuffed to receive a card from a woman whose life has run almost parallel in time, if not circumstance, to her own. Having worked hard all her life, raised a family, including 18 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, Rita says life has been good. “I’ve travelled, made many, many friends, been here, there and everywhere with the bowling club ... I’ve lived a full life,” she said.

Cuppas galore By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Valley residents will have plenty of opportunities to have a tea break in the coming month, with many Biggest Morning Tea events slated to raise money for the Cancer Council. The Mail reported last week that Healesville’s Lions Den Op Shop would be hosting a morning tea event on Thursday 26 May, to raise funds for cancer research. But there are plenty more events scattered around the area in coming months, including two big morning teas in Yarra Glen. On Tuesday 31 May, the Yarra Glen Living and Learning Centre will be hosting a tea with the Steels Creek Stitchers at the Yarra Glen Memorial Hall, on Anzac Avenue. From 10am to noon, homemade cakes and sandwiches will be on sale, along with tea and coffee, with raffles and games being held to raise funds for the Cancer Council of Victoria. Office and program coordinator at the YGLLC Debra Traill said that Hargreaves Hill’s Beth Williams would also be performing on the morning, singing songs for visitors. She said that $10 would get visitors a bottomless cup of tea

On Saturday 25 June, Concetta Rizza from Yarra Glen’s Marsala Cafe will be hosting a morning tea event at the Yarra Valley Racecourse. Ms Rizza said she was hoping to double last year’s funds of $8700, and turn the 200-odd attendance to 500, with farm animals, face painting, entertainment and speakers coming to the event. “At the end of the day, if we get almost the same amount, we’ve done well,” she said. “At the end of the day, it’s
By JESSE GRAHAM FROM playing bingo and games with residents, helping with arts and crafts, or just being there to have a cup of tea and a chat with, Lesley Wilkinson is an essential part of Healesville’s Monda Lodge. Ms Wilkinson, who has been at Monda for about eight years, spends her Thursday afternoons at the aged care facility, playing games, running craft activities, and talking to residents. She sat down with the Mail on Thursday, 5 May, to talk about her time at the lodge and volunteering, ahead of National Volunteer Week, which ran from 9 to 15 May. Ms Wilkinson said she signed up as a volunteer after visiting the lodge with the Healesville Spinners and Weavers group, where she is currently secretary. “We came here on a visit, to demonstrate our crafts one day,” she said.
“When you do that, no matter where you go, you’re always asked, ‘Will you come back?’, or ‘Do you have something to offer?’ - I said yes.” When asked how long she had been volunteering there, she said she had lost track, but put the number at either eight or nine years. “We’ve been trying to figure that one out,” she said. “It’s all good - you wouldn’t come back otherwise.” Her visits usually involve playing games with the residents - she was playing bingo with a group when the Mail visited - or showing them crafts, or simply just having a chat over a cuppa. She said that she often talks to older residents about their lives, and how the conveniences of today - such as quick clothes drying - were foreign thoughts when the residents were growing up. “We share a lot,” she said. “The ladies had wood-fire

She encouraged others to have a go at volunteering, saying that she came with the goal of giving to others, but gets plenty back in terms of reward. “You’re giving, but it’s what you get back that’s the thing the feeling that you get back,” she said. “I feel like people are scared of volunteering, because it’s a commitment, but you only do what you can and, generally, organisations look after you.” For more information about volunteering, visit www.volunteeringaustralia.org

Wandin North shopping centre will get $109,000 spent on streetscape improvements around the town centre, with work expected to be completed by the end of the year. Cr Jason Callanan said the council was working with business opera-

Briefly Museum raided, tools stolen
By KATH GANNAWAY
POLICE are searching for witnesses to come forward, after thieves made off with tools from Mont De Lancy Historic Homestead over the weekend. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Acting Sergeant Marc Hodgson said about 3.45am on Sunday 15 May, thieves smashed through the gates to Mont De Lancy on Wellington Road in Wandin North. The burglars then smashed a window to the museum premises, and attempted to steal a computer and cash, but were unsuccessful. Det Sgt Hodgson said the thieves then entered a workshop and stole tools and power tools, including a welder, and an antique unregistered trailer - as well as jewellery from the museum. He said the stolen items were worth about $1300, and that police were asking witnesses or people with information to call Yarra Ranges CIU on 9739 2300 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Peter died in June 2015, but she maintained her resolve to work through her grief to attain the success she knew would make him, other family members and her community, proud. Georgia said the support she received from her teachers and others at UYSC was critical. “With Dad being sick, it was a big decision as to whether to keep studying or support Mum,” she said. “The school provided all those support networks to get the work done and still take time off to be at the hospital. “I really didn’t realise just how

much the teachers put in until I needed their help.” To anyone else out there who is struggling, Georgia said it was not easy, but ask for help. “I didn’t want to be the kid who needed help and wasn’t coping,” she said. “But it was the best decision I made. Your school and teachers can do way more than you expect to help you get through.” Although not set in concrete, she is now looking towards a career in politics, saying she believes it’s a way to make a difference and achieve change.
“I think it’s important to have more diversity and more people from regional areas, also maybe more people who grew up a bit more disadvantaged to give them a voice,” she said. MSRF chairman, Rob Knowles, said without the scholarships, amazing young people like Georgia might not have reached their full potential. “Georgia may have missed out on a tertiary education, or worse, not realised her dreams of making a significant lifelong difference to her local community in rural Victoria,” he said.

DRIVERS are being called on by police to be proactive and protect their rego plates before thieves strike, with free anti-theft screws available at Lilydale police station. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Acting Sergeant Marc Hodgson said that “lots” of number plates were stolen across the outer east, and in the Yarra Ranges. He said that anti-theft screws were available for free over the counter at the Lilydale police station, and asked residents to get them, before an opportunistic thief made off with their plates.
Police recover chainsaws VICTIMS of chainsaw thefts are being asked to come forward to police, after a number of stolen tools were recovered by Yarra Ranges cops. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Acting Sergeant Marc Hodgson said that police had recovered “quite a few” chainsaws that were believed to have been stolen in the area. “We’re asking that people who have been victim of any thefts of chainsaw to contact the office,” Det Sgt Hodgson said. He said that tool owners should take note of the serial numbers of their power tools, and to pass those numbers onto police in the event of a theft, so that tools can be easily sent back to their owners if found. Anyone who may have had a chainsaw stolen is asked to call Det Sgt Marc Hodgson on 9739 2300.

FORMER Upper Yarra Secondary School captain Georgia Rokicki has overcome adversity and grief throughout her teenage years to achieve her ambition of a university education. Returning to the college on Friday 13 May to accept a prestigious Macpherson Smith Rural Foundation (MSRF) scholarship, she said her advice to young people who are struggling was to challenge yourself, and not to be afraid to ask for help. The scholarship, which includes $45,000 financial aid plus support through mentoring, leadership development and individual counsel, aims to reduce financial barriers to tertiary study for outstanding rural students. Georgia went from Warburton Primary School to Upper Yarra Secondary College where she was an A-grade student and five-time College dux. She worked through a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and became a University of Melbourne Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholar while at the school, and is now doing an arts degree at Deakin University. It’s an impressive resume for the young woman who, while being raised in a supportive close-knit family, has had to contend with isolation, financial hardship and, in her VCE year, the loss of her father, Peter. Peter was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014, and Georgia spent much of her VCE year caring for him, travelling to and from the hospital and studying by his bedside. Despite the heavy personal and study demands, she held down a part-time job and maintained her involvement with local groups in her community.
bowling green. Cr Child welcomed the investment in the Upper Yarra area saying it was part of a budget that had been hard work. “I really take my hat off to Glenn Patterson (CEO) and the crew who have had to work on this over a period of time with the flexible futures program, activity-based working and service reviews to get to a position where we can still do these big spend items, but have also been able to align with the rate capping without having to seek exemption to strike a larger rate rise. “It’s been hard work, but we’ve really got a result,” he said.

IT’S HARD to think of any sector in the community that isn’t touched by volunteering and to which volunteers make a vital contribution. Volunteers provide support and care for the elderly, they look after our beautiful natural environment through Landcare groups, they are responsible for running our local junior and senior sporting clubs and at the times when the community is at its most vulnerable, our emergency services volunteers in the CFA and SES are there to protect us. Last week we celebrated National Volunteer Week which gives us the opportunity every year to promote the role of volunteers in our community and to say thank you to the more than six million Australians who give their time freely to the community. But this is not the only way we can help. One of the best things we can all do is to roll up our sleeves and get involved. Research tells us that just a few hours of volunteer work makes a difference in people’s happiness.

It’s proven that volunteers are healthier and even sleep better than those who don’t volunteer. The experience of helping others provides meaning, a sense of selfworth and an important social role in the community. My role as Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Communities and Volunteers is so rewarding because I have the opportunity to work directly with volunteer organisations to understand how government can better recognise and facilitate the significant contribution of volunteers to the Victorian community and to ensure the spirit of volunteerism thrives. Recently I invited Opposition Leader Matthew Guy to the Yarra Valley to visit just some of our volunteer organisations in our region including the Healesville CFA and local Men’s Sheds at Badger Creek and Yarra Junction, as well as the Yarra Valley railway - one of Australia’s largest volunteer projects. In the Yarra Valley we are so very lucky to have a host of volunteer organisations who make our community the special and treasured place it is to live in. I look forward to continuing my work with these organisations as your local member of parliament and as Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Communities and Volunteers in Matthew Guy’s Coalition team.

Big-ticket tick for the budget By JESSE GRAHAM
Police have concerns for missing man, Tej Chitnis. Picture: VICTORIA POLICE
Dash-cam hunt for clues By JESSE GRAHAM POLICE are calling on dash-cam owners in the Yarra Valley to come forward in case they may have spotted missing man Tej Chitnis on his way through Healesville last month. Mr Chitnis, a 22-year-old Burwood East man, was reported missing after failing to return home on Wednesday 27 April. He was expected to drive to Blackburn Station, park his car and go to university - but did not return home at 4pm. Victoria Police released a CCTV image of Tej’s car, a 2005 VW Golf, travelling through Healesville at 11.34am on the day of his disappearance. His car has not been found since. He was seen travelling east on the Maroondah Highway, through the intersection with Green Street.
Healesville Leading Senior Constable Chris Hickey said there had been no sighting of Mr Chitnis since the image was captured. Police are asking drivers who were in the area at the time to check their dash camera footage, in case they captured his vehicle heading through. Mr Chitnis’ car registration number is TTF 517. A family member told the Mail earlier in the month that Mr Chitnis’ phone had last pinged in the Healesville area around the time of the CCTV image being captured. Anyone with information about Mr Chitnis is asked to call Forest Hill police station on 8847 3636, or call triple-zero. For more information from the Help Find Tej Chitnis page, visit Facebook. com/findtejchitnis.
THE YARRA Ranges Council has just released its latest draft budget, which will see capital works projects underway around the hills and valley, while capping rate increases for residents. The draft budget, which was endorsed in principle at a council meeting on Tuesday 10 May, was released for public consultation on Wednesday 11 May. It maps out the coming year of projects for the council and how it will spent $178.22 million in revenue. Capital works projects worth $38.49 million, including the construction of the Healesville Community Sports Pavilion and toilets along the Warburton Trail in Woori Yallock, will get underway or be completed during the 2016/'17 financial year. Of the $38.49 million, $14.26 million will be spent on upgrades and improvements to roads, while $3.51 million will be spent on footpath works. Warburton will receive $300,000 in funding for the feasibility and design phase of the Warburton Mountain Bike Hub, as well as a further $300,000 for the design phase of township improvements. Yarra Ranges Council’s manager of financial procurement and rates Angelica Marshall said the council would be meeting the Victorian Government’s 2.5 per cent rate cap without cutting services. “We’re not actually decreasing
any services, any recurrent services, or ... the capital works program there’s still a robust capital works program,” she said. “I think it’s actually a really positive budget for our community.” CEO Glenn Patterson said that meeting the 2.5 per cent rate increase cap, instead of their projected 3.9 per cent rise, meant the council had to find $2 million in savings - and that millions more would need to be saved to continue meeting the cap in coming years. “When you put that over 10 years, it’s a significant amount, and we’ve been able to do that,” he said. He said that every part of the council would go through a service review, over a three-year period, to assess where savings could be found, and that 35 full-time equivalent staff had been dropped as a result. The councillors unanimously voted at the meeting to endorse the budget in principle, and release it to the public for comment until 9 June. Councillor Andy Witlox said at the meeting that the rate increase for the 2007/'08 financial year was set at 6.9 per cent, and that council had been on a “great journey” to bring costs down. Mayor Jason Callanan said it was the job of councillors to listen to the community, and that residents “valued” council’s services, but wanted to keep rates “as low as possible”. He said the council was in a “challenging situation”, due to decreases in federal and State Government
funding, as well as the lower rate revenue from the cap. “In response, this council has initiated an enterprise-wide approach to identify savings, with minimal impact on its services to our community, and to provide increased value for money to you as ratepayers,” he said. He said that fees and charges would increase by 2.5 per cent, in line with CPI (Consumer Price Index), but that “most” fees and charges would be frozen at their current prices for pensioners. The budget will provide $2.9 million to maternal, child health and immunisation services; $1.9 million for youth mental health and counselling, participation and engagement, and $4.1 million for early years development and inclusion services. After costs, the budget projects a $20.11 million surplus for the year. The draft budget, draft council plan 2013/'17, long-term financial plan 2016/'17 - 2025/'26 and the capital expenditure program documents can be found at www.yarraranges. vic.gov.au Cr Callanan said he encouraged residents to look over the documents and make a submission, even if it was “as short as a few lines”. Public submissions will be accepted until 5pm on Thursday 9 June, ahead of a special council meeting on 14 June. Submissions can also be posted to the Chief Executive Officer, PO Box 105, Lilydale, 3140.

Hands off the CFA THE Andrews Labor Government has descended into chaos as a result of the secret deals made prior to the 2014 state election and now Daniel Andrews has undermined his own minister by cutting her out of the loop to make further secret backroom deals with the United Firefighters Union (UFU). The CFA board, CEO, chief and volunteers have been ignored in their protests against an EBA that hands control of the CFA to the UFU, and it is up to all volunteers and their communities to stop it. The UFU is demanding a new enterprise agreement for firefighters include a union-run veto board, effectively handing control of the CFA to the union. Victoria relies on volunteer firefighters to protect them and their communities when they are at their most vulnerable. A UFU takeover will affect the rights of volunteers and ultimately put at jeopardy CFA volunteerism and the safety of Victorians. Please join me and sign the petition at www. handsoffthecfa.com.au to tell Daniel Andrews hands off the CFA! Cindy McLeish, State Member for Eildon.
Spied a spider I WOULD like to express my gratitude to three good Samaritans who came to my aid this morning at 11am. Driving on Settlement Road towards Yarra Junction my worst arachnoid fear presented itself - a large spider on the dashboard interior of my car. Two ladies in a sedan car driving towards Wesburn stopped and neither looked very comfortable with the thought of removing the offending object, but nevertheless approached with the aid of cardboard held aloft. My trembling flyswat seeming totally inadequate. An enormous truck, possibly housing a cherry picker, also stopped. An impressive man alighted from the vehicle, and, without making me feel in the slightest ridiculous, removed the spider and then directed traffic to allow me to make a hasty retreat. Thank you so very much to the ladies in the sedan, and the truck driver. Joanna Guthrie, Warburton.

Healesville Guardian 16 May 1936 Healesville Social Chatter HEALESVILLE doesn’t seem to be coming before the great big public eye very much lately. ‘What’s the matter’, everybody runs out of ideas. The school vacations are almost on us again and I haven’t noticed anything startling happening to make the outside world Healesville-conscious. What about a relay race from the Memorial Hall to Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle or wherever it is that the Royal Coronation ceremony is to take place. Councillors could act as runners and carry a despatch from the shire president to King Edward. Narbethong Progress Association On Friday night a very enjoyable dance, organised by the Narbethong Progress Association, was held in the Narbethong Hall, proceeds of which were devoted to further clearing of tourist tracks and in catering for tourists generally in the vicinity of Narbethong. As the result of the energetic work of the ladies ably led by Mrs A. Paton, the hall was neatly decorated with red and gold streamers, while autumn leaves and the ever decorative gum leaves added to the scheme. Carloads of dancers arrived from Buxton, Marysville and Healesville, the total constituting a greater number than has been seen at a Narbethong dance for some time. Healesville Happenings For their match with Millgrove at Millgrove today, Healesville will field the following - W. Marshall (captain), C. Allan (vicecaptain), F. and A. Dennehy, D. Morrison, W. Rare bird habitat boost A GRANT of $400,000 will help protect and grow populations of the critically endangered helmeted honeyeater in Yellingbo. The grant, earmarked for the purchase of new habitat, is part of the Victorian Budget and followed successful lobbying by Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater (FoHH) last year. Minister for the Environment Lisa Neville and Deputy Premier

Of the 650 hectares currently available to the birds, he said a very small proportion of streamside habitat of flood plain is in good condition. “We’re looking to purchase land
and Member for Monbulk James Merlino visited the home of the critically endangered bird late in November 2015 with an announcement of $175,000 to extend the supplementary feeding program run by FoHH. Mr Merlino said the investment would help further boost numbers of Victoria’s bird emblem. “The hard work of volunteers, staff at DELWP and the efforts from organisations like Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater means this species enjoys a bigger population today than we’ve seen in decades, he added.

Hit and run on parked vehicle eight months and, because the driver had not come forward, he was now looking down the barrel of an insurance excess to get it repaired. On Tuesday, 10 May, he said the damage was being assessed, but that he was thankful that he wasn’t in the car when it was hit. “That’s probably the best thing to take away from the whole thing, he said. Leading Sen Const Argus said police believed the car that hit Mr Duits’ was black or dark-coloured.
The car was side-swiped early on Monday morning. The offending driver took off without leaving a note. 154214 Picture: CONTRIBUTED Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to file a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

A BADGER CREEK man is facing an insurance bill after an unknown driver smashed into his parked car early on Monday morning and drove away. Overnight, between Sunday 8 and Monday 9 May, Jarryd Duits had parked his silver Holden Commodore outside of his house in Koala Avnue, Badger Creek, beside the road. At about 6.30am, an unknown car crashed into his, side-swiping it
and causing damage to its side panels, front bumper and front driver’s side wheel. When Mr Duits, 23, came to see the car at 10.30am, he said the car had been pushed about a metre along the side of the road from the impact. Healesville police Leading Senior Constable Cliff Argus said the driver of the offending car “took offâ€?, and that officers visited the scene in the morning. Funding cut to legal aid By KATH GANNAWAY THE Eastern Community Legal Centre (ECLC) has responded to the 2016/17 Federal Budget with a warning that the most vulnerable communities in Yarra Ranges stand to lose access to critical legal services. ECLC CEO, Michael Smith, said the Centre faces another year in ‘funding limbo’ after the budget confirmed a 30 per cent cut in funding in July 2017. Casey MP, Tony Smith, has vowed however to continue to advocate for a
source of future funding for the organisation, and pointed to other funding sources as possibilities. Funding was cut in the previous budget but was reinstated with a oneoff $400,000 grant for the Yarra Ranges centre after the Casey MP went in to bat for the organisation. The ECLC Yarra Ranges Centre caters for 140,000 people living across the municipality and according to Michael Smith is not only facing increasing demand for services, but is having to deal with the ongoing impact and
pressure of funding uncertainty. “Our Centre is already facing huge demand for family violence and other legal help but the Centre will now have to expend energy to advocate to retain services, rather and expanding services to meet community needs,” he said. He said the budget cut comes at a time the sector faces a national funding cliff, the Productivity Commission has called for an expansion of legal assistance funding, and the Victorian Government has recognised increased
demand in family violence with funding increases. Michael Smith also cited the fact an extra day added to the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court capacity as family violence matters increased and Victoria Police figures that showed an increase of 228.69 per cent over the past five years in the number of Intervention Order applications in Yarra Ranges. Tony Smith pointed to $350,000 funding announced in September 2015 for a Women’s Safety Package pilot
program through ECLC. The $100 million program provides $15 million for legal assistance services. “I believe the pilot program, once complete, will put forward a compelling case for future funding,” Tony Smith said. He said the 2016/17 Budget had also provided $100 million in new funding for a family violence package over the next three years, a significant component of which would go to legal assistance services.
‘Suspicious’ fire destroys deceased estate house By JESSE GRAHAM
The house on Fleay Road was destroyed by the fire. 154141

A FIRE that destroyed an abandoned Badger Creek house on Wednesday night is being treated as suspicious by authorities, after it was found completely alight by firefighters. CFA crews were called out to the Badger Avenue address, just after 10pm on Wednesday 11 May, after reports of a fire at an abandoned property. Badger Creek CFA Captain Josh Martin said the house was “fully involved” when fire trucks pulled up and that firefighters had to carve a tunnel through thick blackberry bushes to get near the house. “We had to make a tunnel on the north-east corner with a chainsaw,” Capt Martin said. He said the house was destroyed by the fire and that a building surveyor was inspecting the house on Thursday 12 May for safety. “The floor’s completely dissi-
pated - you just can’t get in there,” Capt Martin said. “It’s been deemed suspicious.” When the Mail visited the site on Thursday 12 May, CFA fire investigator Brian Neal was on the scene, and said the house was an unoccupied deceased estate. He said the house was full of the former owner’s belongings when the fire began. Mr Neal said the fire is being treated as suspicious, but that the building was being inspected for safety as some walls were still standing after the fire. “We can’t access the building and, being unoccupied and how it is ... there will be further investigations by the police,” he said. Anyone with information about the fire can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or file a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Jess was great with words By MIKAILA HANMAN SIEGERSMA Left: Jess Hanman Siegersma in 2014. 154178 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM
OBITUARY Jess Hanman Siegersma Born: 25-11-1991 Died: 5-4-2016 WE’RE going to start this off with a few words of wisdom from Jess himself, “Coffees are like scissors, you should not run with them.” Maybe one more, just so you know who you’re dealing with, “There’s something oddly romantic about coin laundries.” Jess liked the little romance in things; the quirks, the funnies, the finesse, the craft beer, the well-organised room, the perfectly cooked fetta-stuffed field mushrooms, the good soccer pitch, clean grammar, slick humour. Because of these things and more, it’s hard to think about farewells or goodbyes. But Jess was great with words, so we may as well give it a red-hot go. He started us off, after all. Jess Hanman Siegersma grew up in the Yarra Valley and attended Little Yarra Steiner School (LYSS). He was a brother to Sage and me, a son to Anita and Stephen. He started playing the cello as a kid, and I’m told by his housemates, still pulled it out in his share houses when he needed the soothing tones. He was a friend and brother to many I’m sure those who played alongside him in the various soccer teams he was a part of, could vouch for that. Jess started off playing for Healesville as a young tacker, switching over to Yarra Valley later on. His number was 11, and he was a quick-footed midfielder, a keen goalscorer. He was also quick and diligent in his work. He was a hospo man, begin-

ning at the Bodhi Tree Cafe in Healesville, knee-deep in pizzas and smooth service, and wound up at East of Everything in Camberwell, also in the kitchen. After finishing his Year 12 project at LYSS, he moved into the Blake Manor with dear friends, getting up to all sorts of mischief. He was the kind of person who was gifted in many ways - and it was this creativity that led him to RMIT to do the Professional Writing and Editing course. In the years between, he travelled Europe, he loved, he scored hat-tricks, drove his sexy Golf GTI around (he liked the revvs), attended festivals, danced his bobbing dance moves which were dorky and uber cool, was a brilliant listener, loudly engaged in car karaoke to hip/hop and RnB from the 2000s, and even when he was living in Richmond, would drive back to Yarra Valley’s training, come rain hail or shine. The celebration of his life was a reflection of a FaceyB status he once posted, “I breathe every breath as my first and live every day as my last”. It was
held in the barn at the Stones Winery in the Yarra Valley, surrounded by oak trees in autumn light, with over 600 people in attendance. I think in times like these we look for consolation in something, for direction, for answers. Jess, again, has some advice for us. This excerpt comes from a piece of
writing about dealing with the grief of parents separating, which I think can be a little gold thing for us, a treasured reminder as we send off our much-loved companion, brother and son. “In the moment, it feels like IKEA has forgotten to give you the necessary Allen key and there’s no hope of putting your life back together.
“But then, with a little perseverance, and a touch of imagination, piece by piece it slots into place, forming a very sturdy, structurally sound, king (Henry) sized bed.” Farewell Lion. See you later Babyblue. Fly high Jos¨. Smooth sailing, Hanman. We love you Hannaz. Vale our beautiful Jess.

Focus shifts to drugs By KATH GANNAWAY THE Australian Road Safety Foundation is calling on the public to focus on an increasing drug driving culture as the 10th anniversary of Fatality Free Friday approaches. An initiative of the foundation, Fatality Free Friday is held on the last Friday in May (27 May this year), and calls for road users to make a pledge to themselves, their family, friends and other motorists, to consciously drive safely and obey road rules. While P-Platers are often given a bad rap for driving recklessly, the ARSF says new research has revealed that it’s the more experienced drivers who need to exercise extra caution behind the wheel. According to the research, commissioned by the ARSF, the incidence of drug driving is more common among 25 to 34-year-olds, with more than one in 10 (11 per cent) admitting to driving under the influence of illicit drugs in the last 12 months. Further findings suggest that a high number of Australians aged 25-34 consider drug driving to be less risky than drink driving, with one in five confessing to successfully avoiding penalties while driving under the influence of an illicit substance. It reveals also that close to one in five (19 per cent) believe that ice, cocaine or acid won’t impact their ability to drive safely. Australian Road Safety Foundation CEO, Russell White, said this year’s Fatality Free Friday campaign would focus on reducing the prevalence of drug driving by educating individual road users on the significant risks and consequences of driving under the influence of an illicit substance. “It is alarming that so many seemingly experienced drivers do not realise the extent to which drugs can impair their ability to drive safely,” Mr White said. “The effects of illegal substances will always be unpredictable. Drug use can impair vision, reaction time, judgement, hearing and memory and when combined with driving, the results can be devastating. “Suggesting that Australians are becoming blase about recreational drug use, close to a third of the population see it as being a normal part of life, and
The ARSF is calling on drivers to pledge to obey road rules ahead of Fatality Free Friday. 154225 many say they wouldn’t intervene if someone they knew was to drug drive.” In Victoria, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) also identifies drug driving as a serious road safety issue stating on their website that in the last five years approximately 37 per cent of all drivers and motorcyclists killed had drugs in their system. Cannabis and stimulants were the most common substances detected. The TAC says about 21 per cent of drivers and motorcyclists killed in
2012 tested positive to THC, the active component of cannabis, or stimulant/ amphetamine type drugs such as ecstasy, speed and ice. In 2004, the TAC drug driving campaigns were launched to support random roadside testing of illegal drugs and since then there have been several drug driving campaigns highlighting police enforcement and showing how drugs impair driving. In July 2006 the government extended the testing program indefinitely and
introduced legislation which allowed for the testing of MDMA(ecstasy). Mr White said while a single day free from any fatalities was the ultimate goal of Fatality Free Friday, drivers should commit to making safe choices every time they got behind the wheel. “Motorists must recognise that every decision they make can be the difference between life and death - it only takes a lapse in concentration or a slightly delayed reaction that could
result in a loss of life,” he said. In a promising sign that the safe driving message seems to be sinking in with some, more than 130,000 Australians have taken the Fatality Free Friday pledge to date As well as attending one of the many Fatality Free Friday public signing events across the country today, road users are also able to make their road safety pledge by visiting www.fatalityfreefriday.com or on the Fatality Free Friday Facebook page.

Stones host dinner for aid organisation
An enchanting style By KATH GANNAWAY THE historic bluestone building at Peace Farm in Yarra Junction is the perfect fit for the edgy Balkan, Gypsy and Greek sound of Babaganoush. Local musician, Malini Chidzey, has managed the band for over 13 years, performed at many music festivals around Australia, toured Europe and recorded two albums with the energetic and exuberant group. Through regular performances at the Warburton Arts Centre, and her work teaching violin at Warburton Primary School and the Little Yarra Steiner School in Yarra Junction, Malini has established a loyal following of locals keen to hear the wonderful, exotic music of Babaganoush. Malini has appeared on other recordings and played with other artists such as the Counterfeit Gypsies, Slivovitz Orchestra, Jona Byron and the Dirty Royals, Esme MacDonald, Ben Mitchell, Lindsay Buckland. Her great passion and love for Gypsy and Balkan music has led her to work with some distinguished Romani musicians such as “Cailu” from Romanian Gypsy band Taraf de Haidouks, and the Serbian folk orchestra Kolo. She has also studied with Elek
Horvath learning traditional folk music in his Transylvanian village of Vajdaszentivanyi. It’s no surprise that she is constantly asked when she will be performing again locally. The answer, at last, is very soon. Babaganoush in the Balkan Bluestones concert will come to the Peace Farm, 60 Settlement Road, Yarra Junction, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, Saturday, 4 June. “The other band members are from Melbourne and while we do performances all over the place, it’s not so often that we do a gig in the Yarra Valley,” Malini said. “The local community has been asking for a concert and we are really looking forward to performing in the beautiful building before a home-grown audience,” she said. “I know Peace Farm cake bakers are some of the best in the valley, so we would love to invite people to come along, relax, dance, be merry, listen to exquisite music in a gorgeous candlelit setting and enjoy some of their delicious chai and cake.” Tickets at the door - $15 adults, Children $10. Healesville scrape home By CAMERON HUTCHINSON AFL YARRA RANGES AGAIN we were blessed with awesome weather. Bit windy at some grounds but probably not enough to make too much of a difference unless you were at Gembrook, Wandin, Olinda or Powelltown, as the score lines indicated either wind assistance or purely good or bad kicking whichever way you look at it. Wandin 48 scoring shots to 16, Powelltown 29 scoring shots to 22 but 20 of them were behinds. Olinda 42 shots to 13, Yea 45 scoring shots to 25 and Monbulk 33 shots to Upwey 26 and yes, Upwey won. In netball Wandin, Olinda, Woori, Upwey and Warburton share the ladder leaders throughout the Division 1 Grades while in Division 2 Seville, Yea and Yarra Glen are holding the top spots after Round 5. Interleague now takes the limelight for the next week with the Senior and Under 19 Football as well as Senior and 17 and Under Netball taking on Nepean at Healesville on Saturday, 21 May. Bendigo Community Bank Division 1 Senior Football Healesville 10.13(73) def Mount Evelyn 8.13(61) Mount Evelyn will be disappointed with their efforts. They had a very handy 5 goal to zip lead after the first quarter and would have been feeling quietly confident. Healesville came out in the second and stunned Mount Evelyn by kicking 4.4 to the Mounters 3 behinds. A 32-point lead was reduced to 7 points at half time. Healesville continued their attack in the third and went into the last with a 10 point lead. Healesville ended up coming away with a 12 point win. Healesville Best: J. Savage, B. Miller, N. Mende (1 goal), J. Nugent, C. Warren, S. Donkin. Mount Evelyn Best: A. Chalkley (4), R. Cowan, D. Matarazzo, B. Doyle, D. Broadway, M. Brierley (1). Wandin 26.22(178) def Belgrave 8.8(86) This was always going to be a tough ask for Belgrave and Wandin made sure of that from the outset. A six goal to 3 first quarter set the scene for the day. Scott Dwyer was in scintillating form kicking 9, whilst Tom Stubley was a bit of a loan soldier up forward for Belgrave. Wandin sit fourth after this week and take on Upwey Tecoma in Round 6. Wandin Best: J. Myers (1), S. Dwyer (9), L. Jones, D. Wilson (1), D. Ladner, J. Ladner. Belgrave Best: J. Pearce, J. Webb, T. Stubley (2), C. Power, P. Gough, R. Matthews. Olinda Ferny Creek 21.21(147) def Emerald 9.4(58) Olinda and Emerald were fairly even after the first and the Bombers would have been happy with the scoreline at quarter time. Olinda was just warming up and kicked an impressive 9 goals in the second while keeping Emerald goalless. The game was all over at half time and it was really only Olinda by how much and the score could have been higher if Olinda had the GPS (Goal Penetration Seeker) turned on. Caillin Porter was a focus up forward for the Bombers but the ball was just not getting up there.
Hancock were the best for Junction but needed more support during the day. Yea Best: B. Cunningham (3), J. Marasco (3), A. Hobbs, H. Jarvie (2), R. Wilson (4), H. Saville (3). Yarra Junction Best: T. Hancock (3), S. Williams, C. Spaulding (4), M. Duke, C. Long, E. Wadsworth.
Gembrook Cockatoo trounced Thornton Eildon in the Division 2 Seniors building percentage with a 90-point win. Picture: ROBYN KUYS Olinda Ferny Creek Best: M. Wright (2), L. Taylor (5), R. CottamStarkey (4), M. Hottes, P. Rosier (3), B. Shaw. Emerald Best: C. Thomsen (1 goal), M. Steer, K. Asling (2 goals), L. McKenna, Mat Dompietro, D. Murray. Upwey Tecoma 14.12(96) def Monbulk 10.23(83) This game certainly turned out to be the contest of the round. Monbulk had 10 scoring shots to 7 in the first but only had an 8 point lead. They kicked 4.6 in the second, extending their lead to 23 points but would have been disappointed with their 7.13 scoreline. Upwey got the upper hand in the third and added 4.2 to 1.3 to only be down by 6 points. Monbulk need to hit the track and do some goal kicking drills. Upwey were just better and kicked 6.2 to a disappointing 2.7. Upwey Tecoma Best: T. Robinson (4), D. Devers (1), K. Townsend-Finlay, K. Grenda, B. Sheppard (1), L. O’Brien. Monbulk Best: J. Major, C. Sharpe (1), S. Williams, J. Mohr, D. Werts, S. Gough (2). Woori Yallock 12.18(90) def Warburton Millgrove 3.6(24) The Burras could not get anything to work on Saturday. Woori kicked 5.6 in the first to Warburton’s 3 behinds and it was always going to be catch up footy for Warby. A 40 point lead at half time had the game sewn up. At half time Warby’s score was 1.4. Not good enough if you want to be competitive and be taken seriously. Woori Yallock Best: J. Matthews (5), K. Busoli, R. Monkhorst, L. Boontjes, C. Smedley, J. Williams (2). Warburton Millgrove Best: J. Iacono, P. Sharp, J. Mullan (1), T. Marr, L. Barnard, I. Andueza. Tara Press Division 2 Seniors Football Gembrook Cockatoo 19.14(128) def Thornton Eildon 6.2(38) Gembrook sit fourth on the ladder after a complete domination of Thornton Eildon on Saturday. Thornton just had no answers for the older heads of Gembrook. Dan Leversha and Ricky Causer were creating havoc. A 54
point lead at qtr time saw the game all but over and a 90-point victory made it a tough day at the office for the Shinboners. Gembrook Cockatoo Best: D. Leversha (1), R. Causer (3), M. Maddison, C. Vernal, S. Nuutinen (3), R. Wilson. Thornton Eildon Best: R. Chapman (1), M. Gower, B. Musgrove, J. Strachan (1), J. Brideson, T. Bail. Powelltown 9.20(74) def Seville 8.14(62) Seville went into this game as favourites. Kicking 3.5 to 1.4 in the first and extending their lead to 17 points holding Powelltown goalless in the second. The Demons came out in the third with more drive and kicked 4.2 to 3.4 and reduced Seville’s lead to 13 points. If Powelltown were going to win they were going to have to pull a rabbit out of the hat. They managed 4 rabbits but also got 8 shockers to come away with a hard-fought 12 point win. Powelltown Best: G. Newing (4), D. Edgeworth, Jason Walker (1), T. Hallmark, J. Moore, P. Allen. Seville Best: L. Casini, R. Davis (3), A. Wind, B. Penwill, A. Knight, N. O’Keefe. Yarra Glen 20.13(133) def Alexandra 11.11(77) This game was evenly poised at qtr time with only 1 goal separating them. Yarra Glen put on 5.5 in the second to 3.4 to take a handy lead of 19 points into the main break. Yarra Glen hit top gear in the second half kicking 11.6 to 5.5 to come away with another 4 points. Yarra Glen have the next two weeks off and then take on Yea in Round 7. Yarra Glen Best: L. Telford (5), L. Hoffman (3), B. Clark, B. Ashton, A. Moate (3), A. Smith (3). Alexandra Best: B. Wallace, B. McDonald, M. Steiner (1), B. Norris (3), J. Purcell, D. Bourke. Yea 28.17(185) def Yarra Junction 10.15(75) Yea were relentless in their demolition job of Yarra Junction on Saturday. The first quarter was reasonably even with Yea taking a 21 point lead into the second quarter. Yea switched it on in the second and kicked an amazing 13.2 to Junction’s 2.5. Spaulding and
Yarra Valley Motor Group Under 18 Football Warburton Millgrove 13.5(83) def Monbulk-Seville 6.8(44) A 6 goal to 1 first quarter set the scene for the rest of the game. A 34 point lead into the third was always going to be a hard ask for MonbulkSeville. Warby kept them goalless in the third and the game was all but over. Warburton Millgrove Best: S. Boyd-Squires, C. Reiffel, J. McIntosh, P. Hay, B. MacDonald (1), J. Nelson. Monbulk-Seville Best: B. JenningsAllen, J. Paternoster, T. Gelbert (1), N. Wall, J. Whitworth, J. Bourke. Upwey Tecoma 11.21(87) def Woori Yallock-Powelltown 9.3(57) Upwey certainly did not have an easy job of this game today. Woori Yallock-Powelltown made them work for the win the first half and Upwey only had a lead of 3 points at the main break. Upwey kicked an unimpressive and indirect 3.8 to 1.1 in the 3rd and the game was all but over with Upwey coming away with 4 points and the honour of ladder leader. Upwey Tecoma Best: L. Hughes (1), B. Raru (1), C. Sweeney, T. Edyvane (4), A. Milner, B. Oates (2). Woori Yallock-Powelltown Best: M. Arnold, J. Smith (3), L. Amarant, R. Diclaudio (3), R. Ashby, J. Irwin (2). Mount Evelyn 25.13(163) def Kinglake 5.1(31) Mount Evelyn had the ball on a string on Saturday. Joel Bright was unstoppable up forward kicking an amazing 10 goals. Lain McDonald was good for Kinglake. Mount Evelyn now sit third on the ladder outright and are looking like the ones to watch at the moment. Mount Evelyn Best: J. Bright (10). Emerald 21.12(138) def Yarra Glen 3.3(21) Yarra Glen was one game clear of Emerald before this game and had the opportunity to consolidate themselves in the top five but Emerald played a clean and solid team game on Saturday to beat Yarra Glen by a staggering 117 points. Emerald had 11 goal kickers while Yarra Glen had only 3 and that was all they managed all day. Emerald Best: J. Webb (3), C. Roma (2), L. Sheppard (3), J. Thomas, T. Thomsen (1), B. Stuhldreier. Yarra Glen Best: S. Petersen, S. Gommers, L. Smith. NETBALL Greenstone Division 1 A Grade Wandin 67 def Belgrave 46 Wandin got the jump on Belgrave and had a 6 goal lead at quarter time. Turnovers are not easy to come by and Wandin ended up winning comfortably by 21 goals. Wandin Best: Leah Reilly, Gabrielle Sinclair (53), Tayissa Coppinger. Belgrave Best: Lauren Bennett (34), Jennifer Dewhurst, Kalen Winters. Mount Evelyn 51 def Healesville 36 Mount Evelyn took a slim lead into the second quarter but extended that to
12 goals at half time. Sarah Graffen and Rachael Hickey were consistent under the ring but Healesville just could not just get the run on play they needed to try and peg them back. Mount Evelyn Best: Jessica Walker, Rachael Hickey (24), Hannah Urquhart. Healesville Best: Chenile Chandler, Amy Stanley (10), Kayla Wandin-Collins. Olinda Ferny Creek 83 def Emerald 21 Emerald battled hard and never gave up but it is hard when a team like Olinda has a goal shooter that gets more than half their total score. Kristy Evans always stands tall for Emerald as she did again on Saturday. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: Tess Linkins (52), Louise Conway, Georgia Martin. Emerald Best: Kristy Evans (13), Kate Griffin, Nancy Te Whata. Upwey Tecoma 45 def Monbulk Hawks 41 Upwey got their first win for the season on Saturday and now sit equal with Monbulk on the ladder. Upwey took the lead at the 1st break and were never headed. Upwey Tecoma Best: Kaylea McQuade, Teah Edelmaier, Peta Day. Monbulk Hawks Best: Lauren Smith (22), Paige Whitworth, Sophie Stubbs (11). Warburton Millgrove 34 def Woori Yallock 33 There were never more than 2 goals separating these two sides at each break. Woori Yallock had a 1 goal advantage at the last break and it was set for a cracker last quarter. Bianca Daniels was resolute under the ring for Warby while Shannon Gray did everything she could to try and get the points for Woori. Warburton Millgrove Best: Bianca Daniels (26), Tatum Summers, Natalia Petrucev. Woori Yallock Best: Jordan Maher, Bess Schnioffsky, Abby Stranger. Greenstone Division 2 A Grade Seville 45 def Powelltown 11 Seville got off to a flyer and took a 12 goal lead into the second. Powelltown had no answers for the spearheads of Zoe Abbruzzese and Rachael Goulding. Seville sit atop the ladder on percentage only and are always hard to beat. Seville Best: Riley Gentle, Zoe Abbruzzese (23), Morgan Wyatt. Powelltown Best: Georgie Haynes (2), Shae Berriman, Jessica Day. Yarra Glen 45 def Alexandra 24 It was always going to be a big ask for Alexandra. Yarra Glen only held a 4 goal lead at qtr time but came out full of run in the second and shot 25 goals to 9 to take a 10 goal lead at the main break. Yarra Glen Best: Chelsea Birchall, Nicole Moate (19), Georgia Taylor (5). Alexandra Best: Chelsea Skerritt (4), Bethany Cairns, Olivia Twining. Yarra Junction 35 def Yea 28 Yarra Junction took a handy lead of 7 goals into the second. Yea clawed their way back to a 5 goal deficit at the end of the 3rd but it was not enough and could not stop the run and passing of Yarra Junction in the last. These two are now all tied up on the season ladder. Yarra Junction Best: Katelyn Betts (15), Cara Moore, Rachel Young. Yea Best: Megan Leatham, Jacqui Graham, Meg Sundblom.

Powelltown footy reunion is a belter By KATH GANNAWAY THE Powelltown seniors match on Saturday, 28 May, promises some rhetoric - on and off the ground. The match will celebrate the 20year anniversary of the 1996 Premiership with a reunion of players and supporters. Powelly-grown former AFL player, Daniel Hargraves will return to the picturesque bush ground for the match against Gembrook
Cockatoo, and it is expected there will also be an appearance by local veteran champion Peter McConachy. Powelltown will be hoping for a parallel result with the last game for the season in 1996 when they claimed the Premiership Cup against Emerald by 33 points - 7.7(49) to 2.4(16). What they may not be so keep to revisit is the wet and muddy condi-
tions that were typical of many of the grounds at the time. Club president, Peter Podolinsky said it was the last senior premiership won by the club and a lot of the players who were part of the team are still active at committee level or as regulars around the club. Mr Podolinsky said Hargraves went on to play with Western Bulldogs and Fremantle in the AFL. McConachy played his 550th
game for the club in 2014, and still plays the odd game. He was club president in 1996 when he played in his third premiership team, and also took out the league best and fairest. Mr Podolinsky said all past players, families and supporters are very welcome to come along on the day, as well as any visitors who might like to enjoy a special game of country football.
Peter McConachy, pictured during his 550th game for Powelltown, will revisit the 1996 premiership. 154282 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY

Three Bridges to host Enduro BY RUSSELL COLVIN SOME of Victoria’s best enduro motorcycle racers will battle it out in the Yamaha Victorian Off-Road Championship (VORC) at Sanders Apple Orchard farm in Three Bridges on 28 and 29 May. Rounds three and four for the Women’s, 19s and under juniors will be played out along with round two and three for the seniors, which will see them fire back into action since the first weekend of March competition at Rawson. Leading the way in the Pro/ Outright championship is Three Bridges’ champion Daniel ‘Chucky’ Sanders, who was quite simply in a class of his own at Rawson.
The reigning two times Pro and Outright VORC champion told the Mail that he was pretty confident heading into the next round of the VORC, even though it will be the first race since he hurt his left ankle at the last round of the Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) at Murray Bridge in April. “I’m looking forward to the next round of the VORC,” said Sanders. “The opening round was great and since then we have enjoyed some good results in the AORC, which gives me a lot of confidence heading into the Three Bridges’ round.” Sanders also added that it would be good to see some local faces out at Three Bridges to see what he and other riders do.
Sanders isn’t the only one flying the flag for the Yarra Valley region, with 18-year-old young gun Lyndon Snodgrass from Gladysdale in on the action. Snodgrass finished sixth in the opening round of the VORC. While rating round one as ‘okay’, he conceded he didn’t get the results that he was after. In saying that, Snodgrass did have little preparation before the curtain-raiser round, but after a solid few rounds in this year’s AORC series he said that he is feeling good ahead round two and three of the VORC. “It’s good to have a local race on the calendar, so it should be a great event,” Snodgrass said.
“While round one wasn’t anything to write home about, I’m looking to improve on my sixth position and hopefully score some good championship points to climb up the pecking order in the championship fight. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.” A gruelling three-hour cross country format will take place on the Saturday, while on Sunday will see riders tackle a Sprint style format race. Entry to the round is free, with racing igniting into action at 9am on both days at 1020 Little Yarra Road, Three Bridges (between Yarra Junction and Powelltown). As long as the weather isn’t wet, the round will go ahead.
AFL Yarra Ranges has announced the Senior squad for the 2016 Worksafe AFL Vic Country Community Championships to be held at Healesville on Saturday, 21 May against the Mornington Peninsula/Nepean League. The competition, playing under a new format of Country vs Metro for the first time, will bring together the region’s best football and netball talent on the region’s premier ground. AFL Yarra Ranges CEO, Luke McCormick, said it was an exciting line-up with the league having the pick of almost every player from across the region for the first time in a number of years. “We run an Under 18 competition while Nepean has Under 19s, so we are also able to choose from our players in the age group who are currently playing in our senior competition,” Mr McCormick said. “Given the talent of netball in our region, that is also going to be a very strong competition. “There is no doubt that this is a great time to come and watch regional football at the very highest standard.” The competition will also be a great opportunity for the Healesville Netball Football Club with the installation this season of AFL standard goal posts. Mr McCormick the upgrade was part of a play to run pre-season and in-season TAC matches at Healesville with the ultimate goal to get an AFL pre-season game. Senior squad training was held on Wednesday, 11 May at Healesville and will continue at Healesville tonight (Tuesday, 17 May). All teams, football and netball, will come together to train at Yarra Glen on Thursday, 19 May, with dinner and presentation after training at the Yarra Valley Racecourse in Yarra Glen. The competition comprises 17 and Under and Open netball, at 11am and 12.15pm and Under 19 and Senior football at 11am and 2pm. With less than a week to go, the Senior squad has been pared down to players from across the League, representing 15 clubs. They are: Bart Wallace (Alexandra), Thomas Stubley, Jesse Pierce and Ethan Clasby (Belgrave), Luke McKenna (Emerald), Daniel Plozza, Ashraf Davies, Ben Miller, Shaun Donkin, Jack Nugent, Jason Savage, Jared Layton, Nick Mende, Rod Woodford (Healesville); Will Graf (Kinglake); Nick Keegan, Marcus Hotties, Kelsey Currie, Luke Hill, Callum Beattie, Stuart Horner, Marc Mollica (Olinda); Troy Armstrong, Brodie Emmet (Monbulk); Mark Martin, Ashley Gibbons, R. Hartfield, Damian Kift, Russell Cowan, Andrew Chalkley (Mount Evelyn); Ryce Chapman (Thornton-Eildon); Keenan Hinton (Upwey); Matthew Polkinghorne, Justin Myers, John Ladner, Jake Driessen, Jarred Bayliss, Michael Fowkes (Wandin); Jordy Williams, Joel Adams, Kody Busoli, Ben Monkhorst, Shane Kennedy, Tim Anderson, Robbie Allen (Woori Yallock); Brad Clarke (Yarra Glen); Ewen Wadsworth (Yarra Junction); Brad Cunningham, James Marasco

Rough, tough ... and extinct By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS TOYOTA will say goodbye to the FJ Cruiser in August after more than 11,000 of the rugged machines were purchased since it burst onto the scene in 2011. The FJ Cruiser was inspired by Toyota’s classic FJ40 and the FJ Cruiser was developed as a basic, capable and affordable vehicle aimed specifically at serious off-roaders looking to push the limits. Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the FJ Cruiser built on more than half a cen-
tury of Toyota tradition in producing tough off-road vehicles. “The FJ rides into the sunset as a vehicle renowned for its ability to traverse rugged outback trails while offering plenty of utility for all types of activities and being equally wellsuited for everyday driving," Mr Cramb said. The FJ Cruiser was considered an instant classic as it drew on design elements from the FJ40 such as front grille with two round headlights, the bonnet and wheel-arch contours and a rear-mounted and exposed full-size spare tyre.
After its first year of production in Australia, the FJ Cruiser won 4x4 Australia magazine’s 4x4 of the Year title. Judges said the FJ Cruiser proved to be the “real deal" with its “well-proven and robust mechanicals". The FJ Cruiser will be fondly remembered by Mr Cramb, who said it had been a great addition to the Toyota brand. “It will leave lasting memories as one of the most iconic vehicles in Toyota’s rich SUV history, helping to bring renewed energy to the Toyota brand," he said.
The Toyota FJ Cruiser will be no longer this year. 154287

THE 100 Lap Derby is held at Alexandra Speedway each year on the Queen’s Birthday Weekend in June. Dubbed 'The Bathurst of Speedway’, the event is unique in Speedway, as not only do drivers turn left, they also turn right. The other drawcard for drivers and spectators, is that any Speedway Sedan type race car can enter. It’s a rare opportunity to see a field of AMCAs, Super Sedans, Standard Saloons or a 1200 Junior (with dad driving)
all in the one race. The 100 Lapper is the feature event, with heats on the Saturday and the 100 lap final on the Sunday. The final generally has just over 40 cars, and pit stops are allowed, and generally takes just over one hour to run. Other events over the weekend are the Shamrock Cup for Standard Saloons and The Short Circuit Championship for SSA Juniors, all run through the infamous ‘Dog Leg’. Racing typically starts early afternoon around 2pm and is
generally completed by 10pm. Camping is avaliable at the track, making for a great, safe and sociable weekend of racing. Anyone keen to try their luck in the 100 lapper must have a car that complies with the safety aspects of the 100 lapper rule book. A link is provided on the website. A checklist is also provided on the website for completion prior to race day to help pass scrutineering. Visit www.alexandraspeedway.com.au for more information.
