option, the demand is sufficient to operate a viable home. He said the project renovations would be funded entirely from AdventCare funds with support from the Warburton Bendigo Community Bank for equipment.

“YES, the decision is to stay open ... no bones about that.” That was essentially the message residents, family members and staff at AdventCare Yarra Ranges aged care facility, and the wider Warburton community, were hanging on last week after four months of lobbying and negotiations to keep the home open. And, ultimately, it was the decision they got. AdventCare Victoria’s CEO David Reece moved quickly on Thursday, 15 December, to allay confusion over the long-awaited announcement by Chairman of AdventCare Victoria, pastor Graeme Christian, that “the board was still meeting” on ‘conditions’ around the future of the home and its residents. The announcement in August by AdventCare Victoria that the aged-care home would close within three months sent shockwaves through the community. The implications painted a bleak picture for the 28 residents who would have to find new homes away from the township, for the 50 staff, many of them breadwinners for their families, and for businesses who stood to suffer a massive commercial impact. Local businesswoman and chair of Warburton Valley CEDA (Community Economic Development Association) Peta Godenzi spearheaded the campaign, along with Warburton Adventist Church, to have the decision reversed. In a snapshot of the plan for the future, AdventCare said the facility would be renovated to a fully compliant, 42-bed, updated aged-care centre. The redevelopment will be done in two stages, adding 32 compliant rooms to the existing 10. The lounge and reception area will also be updated providing a modern home. Mr Reece said a number of factors had influenced the change of direction including a change of policy by the Federal Government which would equate to $100,000 a year for the facility. The issue of an oversupply of beds in the region was looked at using a different model of 45 beds, rather than 75 and Mr Reece said they now believe with community support and people in the Warburton Valley choosing AdventCare Yarra Ranges as their prime

MATTHEW Holmes was an aspiring film-maker working part-time at the Shell in Warburton when he launched his Legend of Ben Hall kickstarter in 2014. On Friday, 9 December, he was on the stage at the Mecca Theatre in Warburton introducing the full-length feature film to a full-house as guest of the Yarra Ranges Film Society. “The reason I took that job is because I invest every waking hour I’ve got into writing scripts and developing movies,” Holmes said when he was interviewed by the Mail back then. Since then, Holmes has written, produced and directed the film and his dedication and talent was loudly applauded as the credits rolled and Holmes and cast and crew members took to the mic for a Q&A. The film premiered in bushranger country at Forbes, New South Wales, in November and is touring the country, including opening the 2016 Made In Melbourne Film Festival on 6 December.

Holmes said he had enjoyed the community and lifestyle of Warburton for three years. “The Legend of Ben Hall began in Warburton; this is the genesis of Ben Hall,” he said thanking the YRFS for their support. Joining Holmes for the Q&A were Jamie Coffa as bushranger John Gilbert, Joanne Dobbin as Biddy Hall, Adam La Rose as Constable Wiles, also an associate producer, and Micheal Resce as Constable Hipkiss. Holmes said he had aimed to make a film that told the true story of Ben Hall which tackled some of the myths around one of the most wanted men in Australia’s bushranger history. The quintessential bushranger story of betrayal, revenge, romance, and crime of its time, Ben Hall is filmed in the magnificent landscape around Macedon Ranges and captures the desperation and the adventure of bushranging in the early days of the colony. It’s a broad landscape for future films of which Holmes has written two, telling the stories of bushrangers Frank

AS WARBURTON and other police around Yarra Ranges prepare for the inevitable Christmas blitz, Sergeant Tom Wilkinson has made a plea especially to young drivers. He wants them to remember their friends who won’t be on the road, or with their families and friends, this Christmas. He said he was astounded on Saturday night, 10 December, to have to deal with a carload of young people intercepted on the Warburton Highway at Launching Place who were driving at 11pm at night with just flashing lights. The driver of the car had his licence suspended on the spot after blowing over the limit at .12. “There were a number of issues including alcohol, the high risk of the Warburton Highway, one of the most high-risk roads in the state, and the number of people in the car,” Sgt Wilkinson said. “They all understood how serious the situation was but had not turned their minds to possible consequences,” he said, adding that he would have expected that one of them would have shown some leadership and commonsense. “Those guys are aware of others in our community who have lost their lives, so it troubles me that we have this repetitive behaviour when we’ve already lost so many of our young people and you still have this sort of thing still going on.” He urged young drivers, and passengers, to have a contingency driver plan, and for parents to push that message before their children head out. “You’ve got four kids in a car, which ran the risk of not being able to be seen by other drivers and the possible outcome there is not just for them, but for others on the road,” he said. “The message for everyone is make sure you don’t drink and drive if you’re going to Christmas parties or functions and have a contingency plan and stick to it.” Sgt Wilkinson said he had not met a parent who would not prefer that middle-of-the-night call from their child, annoying as it could be, to a knock on the door by police. “They might be a bit upset but if you’ve gone to a party and find you’ve had a couple of drinks and your friends have left, ring mum and dad. They might be a bit annoyed with you, but they’ll get themselves out of bed and make sure you’re safe.”

Tala’s back to old self By Kath Gannaway IF PATS and treats count as rehabilitation, then Tala, Warburton’s favourite assistance dog, is in good hands. The Mail reported in August that a fund-raising campaign had been launched to get Tala, a black labrador-cross, the surgery she needed to address a painful condition that meant she was unable to put weight on one of her back legs. Tala is Ned Kelly’s constant companion and assistance dog. Despite the chronic pain she has endured from hereditary hip dysplasia, she stoically plodded along with Ned, walking, socialising and wagging her tail at all and sundry and making everyone’s life that little bit better for it. Ned and Tala were back in town last week catching up with friends after successful surgery, and although Tala lost her leg, Ned told the Mail she was not letting it hold her back one bit. “She’s back to her old self ... the sparkle in her eye is back, he said. “She was playing with the ball the other day and jumping around like a pup. Warburton resident Eve Mar-

Treats and pats are good for body and soul. 163460 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY so who set up the campaign said Tala’s new life was a whole of community success story starting with the crowd-funding that paid for initial assessments, Xrays and covered part of the surgery. “Tala is now pain-free, and can look forward to quality of life due to Wandin Veterinary Clinic who saw the humanitarian aspect of the case, she said. She said the Pet Medical Crisis Fund, set up to help pensioners and disadvantaged pet owners with medical needs, was

also a major contributor, and additional money from Tala’s account would be donated back to PMCF. Ned said the response to Tala and his plight was overwhelming. “The local community went in to bat for Tala, he said. “I can’t thank everyone enough, we would not have been able to do this if not for the help of so many people. “This beautiful place restores your faith in human nature.

Ned Kelly and Tala are enjoying a new lease on life. 163460

Mr Christian said he was pleased that the matter had been resolved to produce a positive outcome. “For the first time in more than eight years, we now see a viable path forward for this important community facility - and it is an exciting future which will provide residents and staff with refurbished, more modern and, importantly, fully 9C compliant facilities and excellent care. Works are expected to begin early next year, with the facility staying open during the refurbishment works.

CONGRATULATIONS to everyone involved in the communityled storm clean-up campaign this month. It was wonderful to see the community spirit as residents and community groups banded together to assist those in our community who were affected by the October storm. Residents were able to access a free pick up service up until Sunday 18 December, thanks to funding from the State Government. This community initiative was supported by Yarra Ranges Council, Knox City Council, Cardinia Coun-

cil, SES, CFA, Victoria Police and the State Government. Thank you to our volunteers from Millgrove Residents Actions Group, the Lilydale Branch - Rotary Service Club and Volunteering Victoria - HELPout. The clean up would not have been possible without the input of people living in the Yarra Ranges who were keen to offer a helping hand to their neighbours including the elderly, those living with a disability or people who were unable to remove the tree debris on their property. While the campaign has come to an end, we are anticipating that the CFA will declare the Fire Danger Period shortly. During this period, open air burning cannot go ahead without a permit. It’s important that residents use the coming weeks to burn off before the CFA’s announcement. Please be

aware that open air burning restrictions may vary based on your property zoning. Please visit the My Neighbourhood section on the Yarra Ranges Council website - yarraranges.vic. gov.au/myneighbourhood, which allows you to enter your home address to access information about burning off, including what restrictions may apply and times when burning can occur. For residents with green waste, please visit My Neighbourhood to check your upcoming regular fortnightly collection dates. For those of you that aren’t aware, the old Fire Ready App has been upgraded to the all hazards VicEmergency app. Make sure you receive up to date incident information by downloading the VicEmergency app to your smart phone to access timely emergency information and warnings.

To download the app, visit emergency.vic.gov.au To find out more about fire restrictions, visit the CFA’s website at cfa.vic.gov.au. Summer is a beautiful time of year in the Yarra Ranges but with the sunshine comes high temperatures. Please check on your neighbours over the Christmas period and coming summer months. Drink plenty of water even if you don’t feel thirsty. Please provide your pets and farm animals with plenty of water. Stay in the shade, in air-conditioned buildings and keep out of the sun for long periods of time. There is also plenty to do during the school holiday period. There are various activities taking place throughout January around the Yarra Ranges. To find out what is on, please visit yarraranges.vic.gov.au/ youth or follow YarraRangesYouth on Facebook.

By Kath Gannaway JESSIE Bennett did not hold back when asked about winning Casey MP Tony Smith’s 2016 Christmas card competition. “I was gobsmacked ... my jaw dropped and my eyes widened,” she said. “I was in shock ... I didn’t think I’d win.” Mr Smith’s Christmas card design is now almost as much a local tradition as CFA Santas and carols in leafy parks, and Gladysdale Primary School students were delighted to be asked to come up with this year’s design.

Mr Smith said Jessie’s card was chosen for its use of colour and the Australian theme. It was one of several great designs with Jackson Wetherall, Tyer Jones and Riley Wallis-Hasell sharing runner-up honours. Mr Smith said Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was very pleased to receive his wonderful Christmas card all the way from Gladysdale, Victoria. That’s a prestigious nod for a Grade 4 student who had not expected to win. “I’m so excited for my card to go all over Australia,” Jessie said.

she said. “This is good, this is actually great for ... when it’s wet - we can do boxing and stuff underneath the eaves. “It’s going to be great on game day because we’ve got a lot of mums with babies and things like that - they can sit in there and still watch netball out here.” Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, said the pavilion would benefit “hundreds” of players from around the Yarra Ranges. She said women and girls in sports such as netball, had been “an afterthought” when it came to facilities.

“Grassroots sporting teams in Healesville are bursting at the seams, and they deserve safe and modern facilities, with room to grow and welcome more members,” Ms Symes said. “Here, at Don Road, all players have access to equal facilities.” Anyone interested in signing up to the Healesville Soccer Club can visit www. healesvillesoccerclub.com.au or call 0418 566 474. HEALESVILLE’S soccer and netball players have a home of their own, with a new, $1.6 million pavilion opened at the Don Road Sporting Complex on Wednesday, 14 December. Yarra Ranges councillors joined Casey MP Tony Smith, Eildon MP Cindy McLeish and representatives of the Healesville football, netball and soccer clubs to officially open the pavilion, based next to the netball courts at the complex. The pavilion was the result of a 2013 Federal Election pledge, where Mr Smith promised $500,000 for the project - Yarra Ranges Council then put in $1 million, with the final $100,000 contributed by the Victorian Government. Addressing the club members, Mr Smith said the funding meant the council could prioritise the construction of the pavilion, which gives the netball and soccer clubs change rooms, an umpire room, canteen and meeting room. The soccer and netball clubs previously used the football club change rooms and facilities, but this posed problems when multiple clubs’ games fell on the same day. “They (council) took it from way into the future, to make the project a reality,” Mr Smith said. “Without your passion, without your professionalism, we wouldn’t have been able to do that. “Congratulations - this is your day.” Ryrie Ward councillor Fiona McAllister said Soccer Club president Nick Caloutas called her shortly after she was elected to council in 2012 to advocate for the pavilion. “Nick got on the phone to me pretty quickly and said, ‘Come have a look at the Soccer Club facilities’,” she said. “I got the grand tour - it took about

Letters Protect our kids THERE has been much research into childhood sexual assault in Australia, including the recent Royal Commission into Institutional Response to Child Sexual Abuse. It is alarming that experts estimate that one in three girls and one in seven boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18. These are horrific statistics and unfortunately I know first-hand the lack of understanding, acceptance or willingness to talk about child abuse within the community as I am a victim and survivor of child abuse.

Cartoon Recently I discovered that the laws are still not protecting children as they do not prohibit a serious sex offender living next door to a school. Furthermore the onus of child protection is put back onto the school, with them being held responsible for installing cameras or declaring areas out of bounds to simply protect and watch over their students. This is outrageous. We are not just talking about sex offenders, we are talking about people who have been put on the serious sex offender register for life, yet they are allowed to leave prison and live within 10-20 metres of a school.

The time has come for society to speak up and protect the children within our communities and politicians to stop protecting the criminals and put in place tighter regulations that will close this loophole which could potentially threaten schoolchildren. The laws need to ensure a blanket coverage of all serious sex offenders, otherwise the loophole may allow someone like Mr Baldy living next door to your child’s school. Are you happy to stay silent? I’m not. Kersten Gentle, Healesville.

For the refugees THE signing of a giant Christmas card attracted much interest at the recent Warburton Town Market. The card is to be sent to Mr Tony Smith, MP for Casey. Our newly-formed Warburton branch of Rural Australians for Refugees has set out to draw attention to the plight of refugees on Manus and Nauru and to encourage local people to voice their concerns. Many people at the market showed interest in the ‘USA Solution’ - “How many would the USA accept?”, “How long would the process take?” It was clear from multiple conversations that the Warburton community is well aware of the extreme mental stress that detainees are suffering. This branch hopes that the card reminds our member that while he is enjoying a family Christmas in the safety and security of his own home, others are suffering from family separation, insecurity and uncertainty on Manus and Nauru. ing to prepare the campus for the beginning of its Skills First program, beginning next year. “What happens next is Skills First and the intent of that is to create a new training system that puts government-funded TAFE at the centre of it,” she said. “It’s not down there, through the floor, which is the policy of the previous government, it is making sure that we have a sustainable and systemic TAFE system in this state, and that people identify with TAFE, but they identify with their local TAFE.” Yarra Ranges Council CEO Glenn Patterson and councillors Jim Child and Tony Stevenson

were present for the announcement, along with BHI chairman Jack Diamond, staff and a student. Ms Tierney said the $750,000 would purchase equipment needed for courses that were “directly connected to industry and jobs”. “I know that is desperately needed here and will be put to enormous use,” she said. BHI will purchase a fullmotion flight simulator, which will allow for more enrolments in flight courses. The $9.3 million, meanwhile, was dubbed ‘TAFE Boost Funding’ ahead of the Skills First program beginning, which Ms Tierney said will help

to increase course offerings and enrolments. As of Tuesday 13 December, more than 1000 students have enrolled in courses through the Lilydale Lakeside campus which also provides courses through Deakin University and William Angliss Institute. Mr Gray thanked the government for its support and funding, which, he said, would help to broaden the provider’s offering to students in coming years. “We do think we’re out there a bit from the others, in our views and our plans, and it’s nice to know we’ve got that ministerial support for that thinking,” he said.

Tapping young leaders By Kath Gannaway IDENTIFYING leaders can be most difficult for the leaders themselves – especially when it comes to young leaders. Sarah Ward of The MISFIT Project is putting out a call for young people aged from 12 to 18 to be part of Camp UPROAR, a youth leadership camp that will run at Millgrove from 16 to 20 January, 2017. “It’s an awesome opportunity for young people to be engaged, and we’re particularly looking to get kids along who don’t necessarily realise they have leadership ability.

“This is not just about the obvious leaders we have in the community, not just about standing out, or standing up, you can be a quiet leader and this is about providing an opportunity to realise that potential.” The camp, supported by Yarra Ranges Council, will involve games, challenges, theatre and other activities culminating in a performance around issues that have emerged during the camp as mattering to young people. “We are bringing in a lot of young people from not only this shire, but from around Victoria who are community leaders dealing with mental

James Merlino, BHI student Marco Lee, Tony Stevenson, Norman Gray, Gayle Tierney, Jim Child and Jack Diamond at the announcement. 163202 The funding comes after the government spent $20 million on the campus to re-open

it after Swinburne University of Technology closed at the site in 2013.

BREAST-CANCER survivors across Yarra Ranges are being asked to consider taking part in a 12-233K Cancer Council Victoria trial aimed at tracking activity benefits post breast cancer treatment. CCV spokesperson Joseph Regan said although increasing physical activity after a breast cancer diagnosis had been shown to improve survival and other health outcomes, research showed that 84 per cent of women who had had breast cancer did not meet physical activity guidelines. The study, planned for the three months from January to March 2017, will focus on women aged over 50 diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer.

Mr Regan said all participants would be given a Garmin Vivofit 2 fitness tracking watch as part of the study which aimed to test whether using wearable technology could increase physical activity and reduce sitting time among women who had undergone treatment for breast cancer. Judy Sturt, convenor of Yarra Valley Ladies in Pink Family Cancer Support Group said research was important for the long term. “People live with the disease daily, but research has an important role to play,” Ms Sturt said. Mr Regan said CCV would like to have people signed up for the trail before Christmas. For further information or to sign up: www.cancervic.org.au/activate .

Hair shed for a cause By Derek Schlennstedt IT’S a very rare sight to see Santa getting his legs waxed, but this year the employees at Healesville BP petrol station helped one specific Santa to remove his leg hairs to help raise money for the Make A Wish Foundation. Dressed in red and white Christmas attire, the team at the local BP service station in Healesville are regular contributors to the Make A Wish Foundation, and are accustomed to dressing up for a good cause. Earlier this year, team members dressed up as minions to help gather donations, and are involved in the fund-raising as part of the Vantage Fuel organisation. Vantage fuel is a familyowned company operating independent service stations throughout Victoria of which Healesville BP is one. Each vantage fuel service station is heavily involved in fundraising for the good cause, and this year as a fund-raiser prior to Christmas it was decided that

employee Michael Pierrehumbert would wax his legs to help raise money for the cause. Team member Belinda McGuiness layered on the smooth pure olive oil hot wax before pulling it off again with hairs attached, which Michael says was a tad painful. “It hurt a bit, yeah, but it’s done for a good cause which is the main thing and hopefully the donations made will help fulfil some wishes,” he said. Though, he jokes, the back of the legs did hurt a bit and he doubted he would be doing it again any time soon. Some of the employees were volunteering their time helping set up the waxing station, which was put up swiftly next to the service station counter and then helped by shaking tins down along the main street. As for Michael, his duties weren’t over once the waxing had finished. He also dressed up as Santa; although he donned Santa’s bushy beard, his legs were void of any hairs.

Looking concerned Michael Pierrehumbert treats his legs to a hot wax that will remove all leg hairs and leave a shiny smooth and naked leg; all done for a good cause, and he hopes to raise money for the Make A Wish Foundation. 163093

Top 10 best films of 2016 All ducks in a row By Seth Lukas Hynes 2016 was a somewhat mediocre year for movies, with the usual glut of sequels, remakes and other franchise extenders. As ever, the independent and foreign circles (which are predominantly represented here) were the best sources of originality and artistic vision, but films like Deadpool, Zootopia, Dr Strange and 10 Cloverfield Lane demonstrated that there is still creativity and risk-taking in the Hollywood machine. Here are my picks for the top 10 best films of 2016. 10. The Nice Guys. This hilarious ’70s crime noir features Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe as a delightfully dysfunctional double-act and a screenplay full of wit and energy. 9. Midnight Special. A subtle subversion of the current superhero boom, Midnight Special is a contemplative sci-fi road-trip movie about a family banding together to protect their gifted son from the government. 8. Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Another brilliant offbeat comedy by Kiwi

7.

director Taika Waititi, Hunt for the Wilderpeople skilfully balances quirky humour with a poignant father-son dynamic. The Founder. A stylish, outstanding character study that pulls no punches in its portrayal of the McDonald’s franchise’s early days. Star Michael Keaton will almost certainly be nominated for Best Actor at next year’s Oscars. Green Room. A taut, unrelentingly grim thriller, Green Room is an ultra-violent masterpiece of tension, and features Patrick Stewart as a sinister skinhead leader. Girl Asleep. The other Top 10 film with a ’70s setting, Girl Asleep is a surreal, wonderfully stylish and touching film about the topsy-turvy emotions and social hardships of adolescence. The Witch. Like Green Room, The Witch is a riveting work of sustained psychological suspense, maintaining both supernatural mystery and a vivid descent into madness, as paranoia

and superstition cause a banished pilgrim family to turn on themselves. This film also sets a new standard for historical accuracy. 3. Arrival. Using alien visitation as commentary on human nature and the joys of knowledge, Arrival is deeply insightful and mind-altering, but built from a sturdy foundation of intimate emotion. 2. The Daughter. Based on the Henrik Ibsen play The Wild Duck, The Daughter is a superbly-acted, profoundly moving drama about the crushing secrets hidden within so many happy families. The Daughter attains a rare level of tonal perfection, in that it’s melancholic and often heartwrenching while never once feeling overblown or manipulative. 1. Shin Godzilla. This may be a self-indulgent choice for number one, given my lifelong love of Godzilla movies, but Shin Godzilla really is a fantastic film with engaging characters, awesome action, compelling themes and clever humour.

Shield’s big guns on fire By Chris Anderson

inevitable conclusion, but it was too little too late as Yarra Junction passed the score with three wickets in hand. Warburton-Millgrove continued their impressive form, as they eclipsed a lacklustre Heaesville. With polar opposite form lines, this contest did little to change those fortunes. Like Mount Evelyn, Healesville were unable to take advantage of batting first in brilliant conditions, and that was where the contest was lost. After struggling for early season wickets, Burras’ star Mick Walker was again among the wickets with 4/22, while David Lever’s consistent season continued with 3/35. With partnerships hard to come by, the Bloods just couldn’t apply enough pressure on the bowling side for them to look past ‘Plan A’. Mark Minney (53) continued his rich vein of form with another half century, but, again, he was unable to push through after reaching the milestone, and he had little support from his top order to help with his resistance. Eventually the visitors were bowled out for 131, a defendable total, but nowhere near an acceptable one. That’s what it proved to be as brothers David (62no) and Ben (54no) Lever made short work of the chase. Ben has been in exceptional form this season and could easily have claims to being the competition’s most in-form batsman. He has rarely failed this season, and, more importantly, he hasn’t wasted a start, which is a failing for plenty of batsmen around the competition. His form is a major catalyst for the Burras’ standing in the competition, as he continually gives his team the ascendancy from the first ball of the innings. Their 10-wicket win now has Warburton-Millgrove leading the pack and with a deep batting line-up and a variety of bowlers, teams will have to work extremely hard to surpass them. In the final game of the round, Woori Yallock flexed their muscles against a vulnerable Yarra Glen. Batting first, Woori Yallock grabbed the bull by the horns courtesy of their reliable opening partnership.

Woori Yallock built their success last season on the back of consistent contributions for Mick Dwyer and Ryan Smith. This was again the catalyst for a dominant Tigers’ performance. The pair put together an impressive 150-run partnership in good time to set up an assault on a big total. Yarra Glen had few answers for the pair, as both the medium-pacers, and their spinners were not only unable to create enough wicket taking deliveries, but they were unable to contain the flow of runs. Marcus Kikidopoulos was able to trap Smith leg before after making a masterful 81, but with more than 10 overs still remaining, and the score on 150, the damage had been done, and the stage was set for some aggressive late innings hitting. Dwyer managed to carry his bat through the entirety of the innings for a well compiled, composed innings of 89; while the remainder of the batsmen cashed in on the foundations laid by their openers. Pressley Moors (2/30) collected a couple of consolation wickets late, but with a score of 4/233, the Tigers held a considerable advantage. With Jackson Wright (2/16) spearheading the Tigers attack, Yarra Glen, although persistent and dogged in their chase, couldn’t provide enough answers to the Tigers attack. With Wright removing the experienced Brendan Ricci for a duck early, Yarra Glen just couldn’t keep pace with the home team’s innings. Simon Young (5/23) has been in exceptional form with both bat and ball this season and the opposition middle order had no answers for his consistent lines, swing and pace. With another five wicket haul, Young’s stocks as the best player in the competition were again improved. Give Yarra Glen credit, they forced the Tigers to bowl their full quota as they were determined not to be bowled out, and they gained some self pride against a tide of impressive skill from the reigning champs. When stumps were drawn, Yarra Glen had scratched to 8/122, well short of their target, but not completely dis-

YVCA CRICKET has reached its Christmas hiatus around the Yarra Valley and the cream is starting to rise to the top, particularly in the top grades. In DJ Strachan Shield, WarburtonMillgrove and Woori Yallock have emerged as the teams to chase after Christmas as their form has been near on impeccable. Warburton-Millgrove lost to the Tigers early in the season, but haven’t missed a beat since; and the form of their key players has them primed for a premiership assault in the new year. Woori Yallock, in pursuit of their third premiership on the trot, have been quietly getting the job done. Despite a blip in the radar against Mount Evelyn last round, they too have their big guns firing. Unbeaten two rounds ago, Mount Evelyn have some time to iron out some chinks in their armour after surrendering meekly for the second game in a row, and will need to rediscover their early season form if they are to challenge the top two. Yarra Junction have strung some wins together in recent weeks, and that has given them a little buffer inside the top four, and their win against Mount Evelyn this round will give them confidence to challenge the big boys in the new year. Seville are within striking distance of Yarra Junction if they are good enough, while Healesville have been disappointing this season, and Yarra Glen have battled for consistency in the top grade. Yarra Junction made short work of Mount Evelyn on the road. Mount Evelyn won the toss and duly elected to bat in pleasant conditions. The early going looked to be travelling in Mount Evelyn’s favour as their opening bats Dan Fraser and Dan Giblin were able to absorb a quick opening spell from the Yarra Junction openers. In an attempt to change the pace of the attack, captain Quinton Hodgkinson threw the ball to Terry Ottrey and Lachlan Dempster, and the pair turned things around for the Eagles.

With tight lines, a well-set field, and a lack of pace to work with, the bowlers were able to turn the screws on the free scoring and Dempster was able to squeeze two crucial wickets in the process. Mount Evelyn captain Kane Jones put the pressure back on the bowlers with some fluent stroke play, but Quinton Hodgkinson’s return to the bowling crease had immediate success, and Jones’s wicket signalled a gradual decline for the home side. All of the Eagles’ artillery worked cohesively for their captain, and Mount Evelyn couldn’t muster the persistence, nor the energy, to provide any resistance to change their fortunes. Eventually, the Rovers were bowled out for a disappointing 131, as the wickets were shared between the bowlers. A score that was well short of par considering the runs on offer at Mount Evelyn thus far this season. With the sub-par total, Yarra Junction’s top order were in no rush, and were able to absorb good bowling without any pressure of scoring quickly. Mount Evelyn’s bowlers were tight, but lacked any wicket taking balls early, as Cameron Spaulding and Troy Hancock delivered a steady, assured start for the visitors. The partnership was broken on 41 when Kane Jones eventually coaxed a loose shot from Hancock, and when Gareth Fraser had Pat Ford trapped in front, the home team sensed they had a chance. With Spaulding’s patience at one end, captain Quinton Hodgkinson took the attack to the home team and ensured there would be no quick collapse. With the score on 97, and Yarra Junction in cruise control, Chad Witherdin was able to produce two wickets in an over to breathe new life into the contest. With a steady hand needed, the experience of Kevin Bomford was what the doctor ordered for the Eagles, and he was able to guide his captain to the verge of victory. A hat-trick to young star Darcy Fraser added some excitement to the

Christmas break-up; the Ambrose scores were always going to be ‘hot, hot, hot!’ And, as it turned out, the hottest group out there was composed of President Andrew Williams, Clint Smallman, Mr Kempton and Mike Dobson. They had 55 off-the-stick for a sensational Nett 48 and 3/8. This won the day easily, as the runner-up team of young tyro, Angus Smith, Roma McIntosh, Ms Nursey and Captain Tony Bickley scored a Nett 53 and 3/8, an impressive score on its own.
