GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS GUIDE
Hoppers Crossing Secondary College HOPPERS Crossing Secondary College is a single campus, co-educational College with an enrolment of approximately 1,400 students. Great emphasis is placed on developing innovative and challenging educational programs, which is achieved by maintaining a close working relationship with the College community.
Dream big and be resilient in the face of adversity Our students are TOMORROW’S LEADERS. The College offers a structured student leadership program including a Student Representative Council (SRC) and established High Resolves Program. Opportunities exist for involvement in programs such as Youth Parliament and the School for Student Leadership. College Captains are involved in key decision-making at the College as members of the College Council and represent the student body in these decisions. Global leadership is also encouraged: three international opportunities (China, Italy and North America) allow students to develop leadership skills on a global platform. These programs see our students lead others in an international context. Our students are SUCCESSFUL. In 2016 the school recorded its most impressive VCE results
in 32 years including a median study score of 29. The highest ATAR score achieved was 97.85 with another student obtaining a perfect 50 study score in one subject. We take pride in offering students guided support throughout their chosen pathway of VCE, VCAL or VET studies and prepare students for University, TAFE or employment options. University Enhancement Studies are offered at the College and provide opportunities for students to incorporate tertiary studies within their VCE program. Over 80% of Year 12 students commencing tertiary studies in 2016 received their top tertiary preference. Our students are DIGITAL LEARNERS. Information and Communications Technology is prioritized across the curriculum with the inclusion of interactive whiteboards or digital media projectors in every classroom. Students are welcome to utilize their preferred learning technology, supported by our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program. This is aimed to skill students to take their place as digital citizens. Our students are PERFORMERS. A strong Performing Arts Program underpins a vast extracurricular offering. Our students are active participants in the Wakakirri Secondary Schools Challenge, a national dance competition whereby students choreograph routines, design costumes and assemble stage sets. The College was awarded Victorian Story of the Year in 2014, 2015 and 2016, in addition to a number of staging, performance and choreography accolades. College Principal, Mr. Wayne Terrill, invites you to attend an information session to find out more and take a tour of the College.

A Brentwood education will provide every student with the opportunity to develop their talents, to nurture a passion and to grow in conďŹ dence about their future. The values that underpin a Brentwood education reect the concept of a genuine learning community. They include Values for Learning (creativity, curiosity, discipline, reection and resilience) and Values for Community (compassion, empathy, integrity, respect and responsibility).

Brentwood Secondary College is a vibrant learning community where all students are supported and encouraged to achieve success and to pursue excellence. A learning community is a place where everyone is learning, both independently and together, and where everyone is continually striving to improve. Students are supported in their intellectual, emotional, social and physical development by a highly professional group of staff. The belief that happy, healthy, resilient students learn best and are therefore able to achieve their best is a guiding philosophy.
The academic program is supported by a strong commitment to pastoral care and a co-curricular program that promotes high levels of student leadership and participation. An innovative junior school curriculum includes the Year 7 Thinking, Learning and Creativity (TLC) program, which integrates English, Humanities and ICT. Students entering Brentwood Secondary College at Year 7 have the opportunity to apply for a place in the Curriculum Enrichment Program. The program is offered to students who demonstrate academic skills above those of their peer group. At Years 8 and 9 students undertake a comprehensive curriculum, with opportunities for support and individualised learning pathways. The senior school curriculum, which includes Years 10, 11 and 12, promotes personalised pathways along with opportunities for advanced placement and university enhancement studies. A secure education and/or training pathway beyond Brentwood is a priority for all senior students.

Bentleigh Secondary College BENTLEIGH Secondary College places great emphasis on students working to achieve their very best, and on students challenging themselves. We all dream of things we want to accomplish during our lives. The difference between those whose dreams come true and those whose do not can be summed up in one word, ‘effort’. Effort is the demonstration of hard work and achievement. We believe that the college motto “Being the best you can be” is something everyone in our school community must aspire to by raising the expectations. As a learning community, we set high expectations for staff and teachers alike and provide an inclusive learning environment which facilitates the best possible outcome for all students. Our curriculum is innovative and academically challenging. Our co-curricular programs offer outstanding opportunities in the performing arts, instrumental music, leadership, sustainable practices and sport. Positive relationships are the cornerstone of our inclusive college culture. These relationships are supported by our code of conduct which is based on the following principles: the right to learn, the right to be treated with respect and the right to be safe. Bentleigh Secondary College has a strong commitment to promoting leaderships skills in students based on cooperation, tolerance, self-discipline and concern for others through active participation in the House Sport Program, music, sustainability and performing arts. Involvement in these activities enables students to develop relationships with students across a variety of year levels and encourages a sense of community. Students are also encouraged to be actively involved in decision making. College Captains, Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and House Captains are important participants in this process. The greatest strength of our school, is the relationship between staff and students, and the sense of belonging that our community fosters. This was exemplified by our School Captain, Nathan Guy when he said in his Valedictory address last year, “I believe that our motto is one that preaches incredible values and ideals. Being the best you can be does not ask the impossible from any student, it is a motto that each student at Bentleigh can easily live up to, and it is an ideal that each of us can carry forward into the next stage of our lives”. At Bentleigh Secondary College, we invite students on an educational journey where they can develop their potential in a supportive environment, challenge themselves to be the best they can be whilst fostering resilience and social awareness. Our Year 7 to 9 programs build strong foundations for future success. We emphasise the core literacy and numeracy skills across all subjects in the curriculum and students access Spanish as their language study. As they progress through the College, students have growing opportunities to refine their own pathways by selecting an increasing number of electives in Year 8, 9 and beyond. Our Year 9 students have the opportunity to contribute to their world through the Connect Program. The Connect Program includes opportunities to participate in Leadership Development, City Experience, Duke of Edinburgh and cross-age tutoring programs/projects. Ensuring our new Year 7 students are happy, secure and confident with a strong sense of belonging is a priority for all staff at Boronia K-12 College. They are supported by a dedicated team of experienced teachers in a cluster of rooms in our dedicated Learning Centre. It is within these spaces that the majority of Year 7 classes are held allowing students to develop a sense of ownership and pride over their environment and a sense of belonging and community amongst themselves and their teachers. As students transition into later years (Years 10-12) the opportunities to refine their pathways open up and students are provided with a diverse range of subjects from all areas of the VCE/VET and VCAL curriculums. Year 10 students are encouraged to undertake VCE/VET units of study to assist in preparing them for the rigors of a full VCE/VET program the following year.

Dreaming the Impossible Dream Grossek’s view MY FATHER and I sat in a small office, nondescript in many ways, save for the clutter and sense of urgency that pervaded the atmosphere on that hot and humid January day. The teacher hustled about the room, shuffling papers and wiping the sweat from his brow. This was a big day for me. The following week I was about to start secondary school and my father was enrolling me at the local high school - at the time a prestigious country high school, affectionately known as The School on the Hill. The hilltop address of the high school was shared with the local technical school, though it was never referred to as such, that title belonged exclusively to the high school. Despite sharing a geographical site, not much else was shared between the schools as far as I can recollect. Oh, from time to time, on occasions when our attention wandered from our studies, we were curtly reminded that it was a privilege to be attending the school on the hill, and that privilege could easily be forfeited were we not to refocus on our studies. The consequence? We would complete our studies at the technical school, with the clear inference being that any plans we may have had for attending university would be dashed. That was the sixties! Fast forward to the eighties, by which time I was at the beginning of my career in senior leadership roles at a medium sized suburban primary school in Melbourne. Our school council president, a former AFL champion player and in retirement, a sports teacher at a prestigious private school introduced me to the brutality by which such schools massaged their reputations. Back then, he revealed, Year 12 students at that school did not only complete their studies at that school but in addition had to ‘earn the right’ to sit their Year 12 exams as a student of that school. Those that didn’t? Well, they were off to the Exhibition Building in the city, sitting their Year 12 exams most certainly, but just as certainly not as students of that particular private school. They sat as public students, belonging to no-one as it were and they would have known it. Thirty years have passed and what’s changed? If the current debates that swirl around us in the media are any indication, very little that is good has occurred. Newspaper headlines such as; The reason schools lock students out of the VCE, ‘I deserve another chance’: the student no school wants, and ‘They thought I’d become a tradie’: Why schools lock students out of VCE, paint an alarming picture of current secondary school practice in some schools. What is driving this problematic trend in education? Back in the sixties as far as I can recollect headlines such as those appearing in our newspapers in recent times were nonexistent. It would appear that the practice of ‘dissuading’ students from sitting their VCE exams and encouraging them to seek the vocational alternative, the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a more recent strategy. Then there’s the ‘option’ provided by some schools to have students opt for an unscored VCE. That is, complete their VCE without receiving an Australian Tertiary

Advocates for broadening the types of assessment options available to Year 12 students, vehemently dismiss claims that the intent of the exercise is to embellish schools VCE results
Admission Rank (ATAR), meaning that in effect they do not sit the end of year VCE examinations. Judging by the commentary, several possibilities would be at play in this trend. Advocates for broadening the types of assessment options available to Year 12 students, vehemently dismiss claims that the intent of the exercise is to embellish schools VCE results. Rather, they argue, it is aimed at ensuring that students for whom a tertiary course at university is not a realistic option, stay at school longer, suffer less pointless stress in their final years of secondary schooling and undertake courses better suited to their talents and interests. This makes eminent sense. After all, most jobs in the workforce do not require a university degree. There’s plenty of evidence indicating that early school leavers and, by that, here it is meant those students who drop out from secondary school as soon as it is legally appropriate to do so, too often slip through the workforce gaps, remaining unemployed for far too long for anyone’s good. Then there’s the not inconsiderable issue of aspiration and hope - while at school, students still have hope, more hope I daresay of completing some sort of qualification that will lead to a worthwhile career. The contemporary film, Moonlight, which incidentally was awarded the Oscar for Best Film, is a gut-wrenching reminder of the hopelessness into which students can disappear following the early curtailment of their secondary schooling. That’s not to say that students who complete their mandatory schooling years will by definition do well in life. That can’t even be said of all students who successfully complete a university degree. The twists and turns in our lives are far more complex than that. It’s also fair to say that school for some students is an exercise in trauma and disappointment. Nonetheless, hanging in there at school would be a better option for more rather than less students. From this perspective, providing students with an incentive to stay at school longer is highly desirable. CONTINUED PAGE 44

Copperfield College is a multi-campus school, with junior campuses at Kings Park and Sydenham, as well as a VCE/VCAL campus at Delahey. We are ‘one family: three homes.’
The College ethos consists of three parts: “we achieve when we are respectful, responsible and we value relationships.” This ethos underpins our structures and processes and governs our interactions with students, staff, families and the community. While we are proud of the strong relationships we develop with our students, we are equally proud of our students’ academic progress and achievements. In fact our VCE results have been trending upwards for the last 6 years with 2016 representing our best set of results yet. The Junior Campuses are based on small teams for Years 7 - 8 and Years 9 - 10. This enables teachers to meet the learning needs of each student and promotes strong relationships and connection to the school. The team structure continues at the Delahey Senior Campus, however it is more of an adult learning environment where our students thrive and are supported to become confident and independent; ready to take their places in the world.

STEAM boosts creative problem solving plus innovative and critical thinking and develops the capacity of students to use new and emerging technologies. Students from the College have already been working on STEAM projects with our university partners (University of Melbourne, Victoria University, Deakin University and La Trobe University) and the new facilities will provide even more opportunities for innovative teaching and learning.
theatre, rehearsal spaces and the latest technology. The theatre will be available for community use after hours and will be a great asset for local performing arts groups. Not only will our musical production be performed in the theatre, but our students studying the performing arts will have access to the best facilities possible. Our Visual Arts students will display their work in our Annual Art Show in the new facility as well. This will build on our achievements of the past across the Arts curriculum. In 2016 four of our graduating students gained places at the Victorian College of the Arts. Essendon Keilor College offers a broad curriculum that caters for the needs of all students. Our innovative Sport and Recreation Industry Project (SARIP), in partnership with Victoria University, provides entry into careers in the sport and recreation industry and our elite footballers continue to be drafted into the AFL, 28 at last count. The College offers three languages, Japanese, Italian and Chinese and in 2018 will be introducing Vietnamese. This will not only cater for our international students but will provide high quality language education for all of our students.
At our Senior (Years 10 to 12) Campus Year 11 students have been running programs for students from our local primary schools and lunch time STEAM clubs are in full swing.
And if that’s not enough, students can choose form a wide range of other VCE programs in Humanities and Business, or for those students looking for a different pathway, the College provides a range of VET and VCAL options that students can mix and match with the VCE offerings.
In addition to STEAM, our great tradition in the performing arts is about to be enhanced with the building of a new Performing Arts Space. This will include a 250 seat
The students of the Essendon Keilor College community are going to benefit greatly for years to come from the delivery of an innovative curriculum in up-to-date facilities.

Footscray City College THE educational opportunities and experiences at Footscray City College (FCC) are exciting. The college strives to build and extend the aspirations of its students, so that they can embrace their futures as fully confident, capable, talented and optimistic young men and women.
provide the youngest students with a warm and inviting home base as well as a bright and stimulating learning environment. The pastoral care system at Year 7 and beyond ensures that the school knows its students well and attends carefully to their personal and academic needs. Close communication with parents is integral to the pastoral care approach.
The school offers an extensive range of choices for students within a vibrant and dynamic educational setting. This greater choice gives extended opportunity for students to discover and explore their individual interests and passions, and to excel.
The curriculum is comprehensive at Year 7 and 8 with an emphasis on developing strong literacy and numeracy foundations for future academic success.
Two significant curriculum priorities of the college are the Sciences and the Arts. We have a formalised partnership with Victoria University to enrich and extend the Science programs of the college. This partnership gives our students access to high-end resources and facilities not normally available to secondary students.
In Year 9, students enter the Futures Centre program where, in addition to a focus on the traditional academic core subjects, students spend one day a week in project based units. These units are specifically geared towards building those skills considered essential for success in the 21st century world.
The college has received accreditation from the Department of Education to offer the Select Entry Accelerated Learning (SEAL) Program, commencing in 2015. Students enter this program in Year 7, and it is tailored to the learning needs of those with high academic ability and potential. It offers extra challenge and greater depth in learning. Students will complete the first four years of secondary school in three years, and then have three years to complete VCE. In Year 10 students will have the option to study a combination of extension units and VCE units. In Year 12, students will also have the possibility of studying a university subject as part of their program.
At Years 10 to 12 there is a strong emphasis on academic rigour, and student programs are tailored to individual needs and strengths. They have a wide range of choices in the traditional areas of the Maths/Sciences, Humanities and the performing and visual arts, as well as niche areas of interest, such as multimedia, fashion, hospitality, horticulture, and avionics.
FCC also specialises in nurturing and challenging all students through the different phases of their secondary schooling from Year 7 to 12. Its Year 7 students step into the recently renovated Year 7 Learning Centre which has been purposely designed to

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 14 One school which has boldly come out and stated its case for requiring students to ‘opt in’ if they want an ATAR, is Templestowe College in Melbourne’s north-east. As was reported in The Age newspaper recently, the school has embarked on a revolutionary approach, one which as its principal, Peter Hutton explains, “Finishing their schooling at Templestowe College without an ATAR would become the default option for students.”
If one of our aims is to encourage a love of learning, why would you make their final years of learning a hell?
In arguing this strategy, Hutton says, “If one of our aims is to encourage a love of learning, why would you make their final years of learning a hell?” He added, “We don’t want this to be a dirty little secret where kids are meant to feel ashamed. I want to bring it out into the light and present it as a really viable option.” Templestowe College are to be commended for their transparency and frankness. Sadly, that’s not the case for all others. I can’t help but think of the eighties and the students made to sit their Year 12 exams as belonging to no school. I have no doubt that it was not an isolated case at the time, and from the stories told today, it would seem that the ‘market forces’ approach which has gained momentum in our education system has much for which to answer. Central to the market approach to education is what is commonly termed the commodification of education. Put simply, this means that learning becomes a process where an economic value is attached to the outcomes. That is good marks for subjects studied, with the eventual pay dirt being a quality job. The better the marks the better the options for desirable courses at, of course, the more prestigious tertiary institutions; read our sandstone universities. It’s important to remember that not all learning is assigned an economic value. Indeed, it is the very measurable, tangible learning that is undertaken in our schools that is assigned such value. Little wonder then that our NAPLAN tests, the international tests - Trends in International Mathematics & Science (TIMSS), Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and of course VCE with its attached ATAR scaled scores rule supreme. No irony intended, but Einstein, himself an unremarkable school student, would make the connection between an increasingly commodified education system and the appeal to some fee-paying schools, private schools and sadly, some of our own government schools of pushing boundaries to outperform each other in their VCE results. This at the potential expense of their students it could be argued. There should be more to education than that and indeed there is. One of the more frustrating features of our spiral down the path of high-stakes testing regimes in our schools is that we have no way of comparing school performance beyond the narrow confines of predominantly tests in literacy, numeracy as per NAPLAN and to that science can be thrown in for TIMSS and PISA tests. Then there’s VCE with ATAR scores, all designed primarily for entrance to university. Sadly, the language of our day speaks of high performing and underperforming schools on the basis of these narrow indicators. This, quite apart from the fact that firstly, schools don’t operate on a level playing field of resourcing and
44
GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS GUIDE
secondly, students are ‘enticed’ from government schools based simply on their academic or sporting prowess by some private schools. The free enterprise model of education explains this all very neatly. Schools with the best VCE results command the most clout for enrolments and, in the case of private schools, the highest fees. Student segregation based on social and academic advantage logically follows. Little wonder then that the gap in educational performance between the students from our more affluent and poorer families is one of the highest of all OECD countries in international tests such as PISA. So many schools do wonderfully well, both on shoestring budgets and in the most challenging of circumstances in ways that matter so much - student and family wellbeing being a prime example. Unfairly, however, they are left behind in the public wake of others who also, it should be acknowledged, do well, but for whom these free market times in education are a boon. A final point should be made for those amongst us obsessed with having us follow in the path of Asian countries and cities that outperform our students on TIMSS and PISA tests. Education systems cannot be divorced from the broader cultural context of their host nations. By definition, education systems are integrally woven within the tapestries of each nation’s culture. We should be mindful of that. Simply cherry-picking one aspect of a country’s culture to import is fraught with the possibility of failure and disappointment. It should not go unnoticed that more than a few Asian nations value our existing education system with its flexibility and emphasis on creativity. Maybe, just maybe, the move toward a broader basis for student engagement and success in senior secondary schools such as Templestowe College will be the dawn of a new era in our school system. If it proves to be so, then that will be truly revolutionary and will rewrite the rules of engagement for all schools. If not, then tilting at windmills is no bad thing. If it were, there would be no place for Don Quixote and the Impossible Dream. Greensborough College GREENSBOROUGH College is committed to the development of its students into well-educated, responsible young adults. At Greensborough College we provide both girls and boys with substantial educational opportunities. Extensive resources allow us to provide the academic focus of a secondary school together with opportunities for students to select from a broad range of curriculum options. Our programs at Greensborough College encourage the highest standard of academic achievement in every activity undertaken by our students. A stimulating blend of academic, cultural and sporting activities equips our young people with the essential skills they will need to become successful citizens in a rapidly changing global community. The friendly and supportive atmosphere is underpinned by a strong code of conduct, a compulsory uniform policy, firm structure and clear expectations. We foster and develop exemplary values of trust, tolerance and respect for self and others. We challenge and encourage each student to discover and build upon their strengths so they may enjoy a positive educational experience. Our program offerings include a High Achievers Acceleration and Enrichment Program commencing in Year 7. Our Year 9 and 10 students complete elective programs focused on helping them develop into creative and complex thinkers, well prepared to take on the more self-directed learning of their VCE years. Academic rigour and a strong work ethic are central to life in Senior School, with a cooperative team culture supporting each student’s quest for success. The mature atmosphere of our Senior School encourages students to achieve their best and our outstanding results have been a clear reflection of this. We offer both VCE and VCAL programs, ensuring our students are able to follow their chosen path. At Greensborough College success comes in many forms – university entry, vocational studies at TAFE,

apprenticeships and employment all stemming from the individual’s personal growth. Every child has the potential to learn and our staff are dedicated to supporting and guiding each student through their secondary education. Girls’ AFL Academy Positive change is coming in the way of women’s participation in elite sports. This year Greensborough College has developed a Girls’ AFL Academy in partnership with the Diamond Creek Women’s Football Club. It is a refreshing new initiative that is giving young girls a sense of self-worth whilst also encouraging them to get involved in physical activity. The girls train four times a week (3 compulsory and 1 optional). Sessions revolve around Strength & Conditioning where we have a qualified and highly professional Elite Strength & Conditioning Coach present (Marnie Hay). Marnie has written personal programs for each girl that includes their biomechanical assessment and injury history. The individualised programs also include video footage that is used to analyse the elements that the girls need to improve on. Each individualised program is updated by Marnie every four weeks to ensure that the girls are doing everything properly as well as then upgrading each program to improve each individual’s athletic performance. Squad training runs at Diamond Hills Reserve with the focus being game plans, tactics and skills training. The girls are expected to maintain 90% attendance in all of their classes and 80% attendance at training. We think it is very important to work closely with the school to ensure that their academics don’t drop as a result of being in the academy. Our squad is home grown, meaning the facilitators of the program are all female staff members at Greensborough College and the two Assistant Coaches and our game day Sports Trainer are alumni. Why choose a public secondary school? WE ALL have a stake in building a public secondary school system that prepares the next generation of productive citizens and workers. Our nation’s economic and social prosperity depends on this. It is essential that all students, regardless of their family background, have access to an excellent local public school in order to reach their potential and contribute to our society. The Victorian Association of State Secondary Principals has consulted widely with its members, asking them to identify what they consider to be the most crucial elements required to build and sustain a thriving public secondary school system. They identified the following key elements required to improve the public secondary school system: Community Expectations Communities take pride in their local public secondary school and are actively involved in improving it ■ Every public secondary school is the school of choice for local families, thus helping to strengthen neighbourhoods and enhance social cohesion ■
■
The Education Minister and senior department officials are passionate advocates for the system they operate: the public school system
Student Outcomes Every school has high expectations of its students and teachers, and pursues a high-performance culture
■ ■
All students make progress in academic achievement and social skills • A student’s educational achievement is not determined by their socio-economic background • Twenty-first century learning skills, (e.g. problem solving, curiosity, teamwork, perseverance) as well as literacy and numeracy, are emphasised in school programs, enabling a more comprehensive comparison of student performance at local, national and international level.
At this time of the year, families are making important decisions about choosing a secondary school for their child. There’s a common view that if you send your child to a private school, your child will get better results. But the facts show that this is wrong. A recent review of almost 30 academic studies revealed public schools achieve similar student outcomes to Catholic and independent schools across a range of education indicators. (Cobbold, 2015)
There are other good reasons to consider enrolling your child in a public school. They include the following: ■
Public schools are great value for money compared with private schools, which charge families up to $30,000 each year in tuition fees per child. Tuition at public schools is free, with families paying for books and some essential items.
■
Children in public schools learn to get on with a wide mixture of students from different backgrounds. These advanced social skills - cooperation, empathy, problem solving - are increasingly prized in the modern workplace. They equip students for success in life and in work.
■
Public schools are neighbourhood schools. Enrolling your child in a school within walking or riding distance to home makes it easier for you to know who your child’s friends are, to make friends with other local parents and to forge closer links with your school and your community.
High quality teaching is one of the biggest factors that influence student learning. That’s why public schools are intensifying their efforts to enhance the skills of their teachers through mentoring, peer and student feedback and other forms of professional development. Public schools are the backbone of our nation’s education system. They express our Australian egalitarian values. They provide opportunities for all children to succeed, no matter where they live. They give all children a fair chance to reach their potential and lead a fulfilling life. This information is courtesy of VASSP - Victorian Association of State Secondary Principals For further information regarding the Education Guides published by the Star New Group refer to: www.victoriaschoolguides.starcommunity.com.au You can read more about Cobbolds review’s findings here: http://www.saveourschools.com.au/public-education/ studies-show-publicschools-achieve-similar-results-toprivate-schools
The review showed there were no significant differences between the results of students from public, Catholic and independent schools in national and international tests and in university completion rates. And in the first year of university, students from public schools outperform other students - they achieve higher grades in their first year of university than students from Catholic and independent schools. As a leader in the public school system I believe it’s important that families know about this information because it can help inform their decision-making. Public schools are just as good as private schools in the area that matters most - developing your child’s potential. The review is one of many pieces of educational research showing that students from the same social background do as well in public schools as they do in Catholic or independent schools.

John Monash Science School IF YOU have a passion for the sciences, love a challenge and welcome every opportunity to learn, this is the school for you. John Monash Science School (JMSS) is Victoria’s first specialist science school focusing on science, mathematics and associated technologies. The school accommodates 640 students from Years 10, 11 and 12 (VCE) from all over Victoria. Since opening to senior students in 2010, JMSS has quickly become one of Victoria’s most innovative and academically highest performing schools. Teachers and students work together on the big questions that science can help answer, in a dynamic, technology-rich environment where curiosity and passion are key. We warmly welcome applications from prospective students to join us in either Year 10 or Year 11 in 2018. More information is available at www.jmss.vic.edu.au/admissions. Curriculum We provide a rich science-based curriculum, and we also firmly believe in educating the ’whole person’, developing leadership, initiative and perspective in our graduates. Our work is underpinned by UNESCO’s four pillars of education - Learning to Know, Learning to Be, Learning to Do and Learning to Live Together. The close-knit, supportive and welcoming environment evident at JMSS is the result. In order to achieve its aims JMSS has formed strong partnerships with researchers and academics in a broad mix of scientific fields at Monash University and CSIRO, sharing resources and expertise and ensuring the courses offered at JMSS are challenging, contemporary and relevant. Coconstructed with Monash academics, the curriculum at JMSS allows students to explore the cutting-edge of scientific knowledge and understanding in the areas of physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, mathematics, engineering, biomedical science, geography and computer science. Throughout Years 10 to 12 the school has implemented the Victorian Curriculum and the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). Every Year 10 student undertakes an extended science research project, and exhibits their poster at the annual JMSS Science Fair in October. Most VCE studies are offered. Many students access a university extension subject on the Monash campus alongside traditional Year 12 subjects. Every student has access to a range of co-curricular options including languages, music, the arts, IT, community service, leadership and sport. JMSS believes in a holistic education for all students, and the strong focus on personal wellbeing and empowerment, physical activity and leadership development is a feature of life for students at the school. The school runs many House events and other programs designed to build confidence, connectedness and spirit within the school community. The school has a welldeveloped Mindfulness program to build resilience in students. Student representatives form a student parliament with an active voice in school leadership and school community activities. Facilities The physical environment at JMSS is very different from

traditional schools. Our laboratories and learning spaces are new, flexibly designed and ICT-rich. Flexible learning spaces enable students to learn individually and in teams. Most classes are team-taught with 2 teachers and up to 50 students. Students use any combination of laptops, tablets, iPads and smartphones to research, problem-solve, analyse, present and create digital objects as well as accessing references and resources from Monash University and beyond. All students develop individual learning pathways informed by their own interests and abilities. Outreach JMSS has a mission to provide opportunities in science for teachers and students across the state through our outreach programs. Our annual Regional Science Exchange program invites Year 10 students from regional and remote locations around Victoria to our school in Melbourne for a 3-week block. This allows regional students to be immersed in cutting-edge scientific enquiry, and experience hands-on workshops at Monash University. Our own students run science workshops for Primary students in our weekly “Little Scientist - Big Science” program which gives young students a chance to share their excitement for science and ask in-depth questions. Community members are welcome to join students, teachers, parents and Monash academics for our annual Science Fair in October. Year 9 and 10 students across the state can study one of JMSS’s emerging science electives online in live-time with our teachers via the ESV (Emerging Sciences Victoria) program - www.emsci.vic.edu.au. Study subjects such as nanoscience, biotechnology and astrophysics. An expanding number of teacher professional learning workshops such as Mathematica are available including face-to-face and online formats. JMSS is an executive member of the International Science Schools Network, a growing partnership of schools across the globe committed. Our reach and influence are now genuinely global, which is vital to develop the leaders and thinkers Australia so desperately needs now. Connect with us at www.jmss.vic.edu.au

Why a Girls’ School? PARENTS often face conflicting advice when deciding whether to send their child to a single-sex or coeducational school. There are more single-sex schools for girls than for boys in each of the three Australian educational sectors: government, Catholic and independent. As a consequence, more boys than girls are enrolled in some coeducational schools. So as a parent, how do you decide which school is best for your child? And, importantly, what do you actually want out of a school? For example, is the focus on achieving good grades, or about making sure your child fits in and feels accepted? There is no straightforward answer, but research has revealed there are some key things to consider when choosing a school which might help determine where to send your child. Single-sex schools Most of Australia’s single-sex schools are found in the feepaying non-government sector. This means that financially secure parents have a wider choice of schools open to them. Of the small number of single-sex schools in the government sector, many are academically selective. Research <http://www.aare.edu.au/datapublications/ 2007/for07148.pdf> suggests that girls who attend single-sex schools are more confident about themselves as learners in subjects such as mathematics and physics than in coeducational schools. In the absence of boys, the girls also feel less constrained in engaging in classroom discussions. For boys attending single-sex or coeducational schools, their confidence levels in physics and mathematics are found to be equally high, and they boisterously engage in

classroom discourse. Girls’ schools provide a fantastic opportunity to educate, inspire and nurture the girls of today, who will be the leaders of tomorrow. In a single sex school, every girl is able to be heard. The curriculum is tailored to the needs of girls, which provides the opportunity to develop and excel. In a coeducational environment, girls can be “drowned out by the boys”, whereas in single-sex schools can captain the debating team, choose to study physics or be part of a cricket team. Highlighted below are some of the many benefits of choosing a single-sex school for your daughter. Role models and leadership Every single leadership role in the school is filled by girls, including the SRC representatives, class captains, sports captains, school captains. The girls learn about various influential women and the roles that they have played in History. Academic advantages Research has consistently shown that girls perform better academically in all girls environments. Without the burden of subject stereotyping, girls are free to pursue academic excellence. A tailored curriculum Girls learn differently from boys. In most girls school the teachers receive special training so that they are able to tailor their classes and curriculum to the needs of the students. This means that the students are more likely to be engaged during class and therefore are able to achieve to their potential. References: http://theconversation.com/single-sex-vscoeducational-schools

Mount Alexander College “ONE size does not fit all, and neither should education. I believe student choice and voice is important in empowering students to learn,” says Mr Wayne Haworth, Principal of Mount Alexander College. When Wayne arrived at MAC in April 2015, there were just over 300 students enrolled at the school. After conversations with the students, staff, parents and community that they were seeking more from the school, Wayne implemented changes to the curriculum and school structure. Since then, enrolments have grown across all year levels from students seeking more from the education system, and with the growing expressions of interest Wayne expects them to continue to rise. Many students move to MAC because the traditional school system is not working and they want a more authentic student voice. After a very busy year in 2016 of many new changes, 2017 is a year of consolidation while still moving forward to improve student outcomes. This is reflecting well in the classrooms, staffrooms and corridors. What is different at MAC? Traditional schooling groups students according to age. At MAC, students are empowered through vertical classes, subject choice, creativity, critical thinking skills and independent learning. The vertical curriculum enables subject choice for every student, developing a deeper love of learning in students. Students are placed in Entry Level (Year 7), Above Entry (Years 8 to 10) and Graduate (Years 11 and 12), and have individual learning plans. Through extensive course counselling, students select from over 100 subjects in key learning areas – English, Maths, Health and PE, Humanities, Languages, Arts, Technology and Science. By allowing students this choice, they are interested in their

learning and the classroom climate is calmer. The buildings and grounds have had extensive improvements made in the last 12 months; however, it is the quality of the teachers makes the school great. Over the past 12 months, many outstanding teachers have joined the teaching team. The principal team have placed a high priority on professional learning for all staff in order to build their capacity. All students have access to a wide range of student wellbeing resources, as student wellbeing is the foundation of academic success. These resources include study and social skills, resilience programs, student leadership development, positive school-wide behaviours, mentor programs, house structure and a dedicated wellbeing team. The school, as cosmopolitan as Melbourne, provides a great place to understand customs and traditions of other cultures. Everyone, including students, staff and parents, deserves respect at MAC, and no one has the right to disrupt or interfere with someone else’s learning. At MAC, there is zero tolerance to bullying, smoking, alcohol, illegal drugs or violence. At MAC, endeavour is considered as important as excellence. All students are empowered to take control of their learning, encouraged to follow their passions while having fun and being challenged, and are supported along the way. The students understand that their voice is of utmost importance and that they are not just responsible for their learning, they are empowered with their learning. Rosehill Secondary College AT ROSEHILL Secondary College, the newly refurbished Science Department has been equipped with state-of-the-art interior design and technology. This allows a unique experience in STEM education. STEM is an interdisciplinary approach to learning that removes the traditional barriers separating the four disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. When these fields are brought together, more meaningful learning can take place. STEM integrates these subjects into real world learning experiences. In 2016, our Environmental Science students collected and analysed data from our local creek system, Steele Creek. The data was used by the EPA to assess the health of the creek, after an environmental spill contaminated the water. Our data was used as a reference point by the EPA. Students have also participated in the following STEM experiences: ■ Engineers without Borders Conferences – Students design solutions to current global humanitarian problems. ■ Robogals - An international non-profit that inspires and encourages female students to consider Engineering. ■ In2Science - Science and Maths peer mentoring in the classroom by current University Science Students. ■ Robotics Program (New in 2017) - High tech coding and programming digital technologies with the use of robotic spheres. ■ Use of multiple 3D printers – incorporating fusion 360 CAD software to design and develop real products. Our students are also provided with opportunities to extend their knowledge and inspire their curiosity of Science by attending various Science programs outside of the school. These programs include: ■ Endeavor Engineering – Students have the opportunity to meet with high performing Melbourne University Students, presenting their final year projects.

Rowville Secondary College GREAT schools think about the world that we are educating young people to enter. The world of work is transforming fast. The Federal Government’s 2015 report on the future of the workforce has found that nearly half of Australian jobs are at risk of computerisation and automation. The non-profit group Foundation for Young Australians recently found that 60 per cent of Australian students were training for jobs that would not exist in the future. Students leaving school in the next few years are likely to have up to 17 different jobs in five different industries. Many of these jobs don’t currently exist and will use technology that has not been invented yet. At Rowville Secondary College we aim to educate students to be curious and powerful learners who have the resilience and grit that allows them to persist in the face of uncertainty and rapid change. We recognise that literacy and numeracy has become the starting point of a good education, rather than the end point, which is why all year 7 and 8 English and Mathematics lessons at Rowville Secondary College have additional teachers in the classroom so that learning can be specifically tailored to the needs of individual students, rather than a one size fits all approach. Having high expectations for all students and providing the support necessary to achieve these expectations is part of the Rowville Secondary College Mission. Conveying positive and high expectations to students occurs in several ways. One of the most obvious and powerful is through personal relationships in which teachers and other school staff communicate to students, “This work is important; I know you can do it; I won’t give up on you”. Students at Rowville Secondary College talk of being respected and of having their strengths and abilities recognized. Great teachers look at each child and see the gem that is inside and communicate this vision back to the child. They look for children’s strengths and interests, and use these as starting points for learning. A relationship that conveys high expectations to students helps them to believe in themselves and improves their self-esteem and confidence. We have developed a programs approach that nurtures and supports each child’s strengths. All students enrol in one of four unique programs - Rowville Maths and Science Academy, Rowville Institute of the Arts, Rowville General

Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see. Be curious." Stephen Hawking Excellence and Rowville Sports Academy. These programs immerse students in curriculum tailored to their strengths, talents and passions. The curriculum in each program is explicitly designed to promote a student’s curiosity. It is structured to take children out of the comfort zone of what they know and what they have experienced into a wide, fascinating and often problematic world. Our teachers help students to develop the skills needed to investigate the topics they are curious about and work together to solve the problems that confront them. Lessons at Rowville Secondary College are designed to help students develop a growth mindset. Dr Carol Dweck conducted some fascinating research regarding students’ attitudes about failure. She noticed that some students bounced back while other students seemed devastated by even the smallest setbacks. After studying the behaviour of thousands of children, Dr Dweck coined the terms fixed mindset and growth mindset to describe the underlying beliefs people have about learning and intelligence. When students believe they can get smarter, they understand that effort makes them stronger. Therefore they put in extra time and effort, and that leads to higher achievement. Learners at Rowville Secondary College are also empowered through mindfulness strategies, learner protocols, regular self-reflection, continuous feedback to and from the teacher and authentic opportunities to make a difference in the classroom, school, local and wider community. Rowville Secondary College is one great school with two campuses and four unique, strengths-based learning programs. Julie Kennedy Principal

For further information, tours or scholarship information contact: Scoresby Secondary College, 9765 4100 www.scoresbysc.vic.edu.au Student Leadership Scoresby Secondary College is proud of the large number of students who are able to participate in the student leadership program and contribute to our school to make it what it is today. A key component of our student leadership programs is ‘student voice’. Student voice brings students and teachers together to explore ways to enhance student wellbeing and engagement with the curriculum through improvements to the school environment. At Scoresby we recognise that students are at the centre of education. The appointment of a Principal’s Student Advisory Team and student representation on College Council is not only seen as an opportunity for authentic student voice, it is also seen as imperative for their future employment in a globally competitive workforce. Teach the Teacher Program Student leaders have been leading a Teach the Teacher program which has recently been launched on the VicSRC Website <http://teachtheteacher.org.au/>. The program offers another perspective to the classroom and enables students to be involved in important discussions about learning and teaching. By providing the space to create positive change in school communities, students and teachers are engaged in conversations and can work together towards solutions. The introduction of the Teach the Teacher Program highlights that Scoresby recognises that students have a unique perspective. They are the ones sitting in the classroom every day and have ideas about what works and ways to improve teaching and learning, to make education even better. The program which was introduced last year has supported the development of stronger and more effective student-teacher relationships and is leading to high quality practice evidenced by the improvements in teaching and learning processes. This is accompanied by improved student outcomes.

Staughton College is dedicated to helping students make a smooth transition from primary school. We ensure students feel safe, happy and stimulated – ready to begin their learning future in a new school environment. Our school is a special place where students have opportunities and support to excel both inside and outside the classroom. We have fantastic teachers at Staughton College. They care about our students. They take the time to know them as people and learners. We place great value on students developing their resilience in order to keep persevering to achieve. This idea is key to our motto ‘Try, Persevere, Achieve.’ Our students are taught the strategies of effective learning, so that they can eventually leave the college as lifelong independent learners. We are passionate about ensuring students demonstrate learning growth and proud of our success in this area. We understand that school is about more than just the learning that happens

in the classroom. At Staughton, we have thriving smaller communities in areas of student passion and interest such as sport, performing arts, debating and public speaking, leadership, and community involvement. These are places at school where students can feel they belong, using their strengths and interests to continue to develop and grow as people. Our extra curricular program is an important way in which we celebrate the diversity of talents within our school and keep our community positively connected. Most importantly, it is fun for our students! The Year 7 program is geared towards helping students develop the values, drive and perseverance they need to achieve at school and ultimately in life. We maintain the positive connection with primary school learning by ensuring that students are based in one classroom with two core teachers for two-thirds of each week. All students in Year 7 follow a core curriculum thatemphasises literacy and numeracy. This offers the equivalent
of a full day’s tuition devoted to English and Mathematics every week. Students also undertake a range of other specialist subject areas including PE, Performing and Visual Art, Drama, Woodwork, Food, and Media. Our Middle Years Program gives students a strong foundation for their senior education. Students develop the skills and knowledge, as well as the learning behaviours and resilience, needed for the years ahead. They develop effective study habits, learning how to understand and seek feedback and how to take advantage of resources like our library, tutoring and Homework Club programs. By Year 8, students are aware of their own strengths and goals so that they can make informed choices about their subjects as they progress to Year 9. In order to make informed choices, students need to consider their desired post-schooling destinations, and through comprehensive Career Planning (beginning in Yr 7), students become aware of these options early in their secondary school lives.

Select Entry Accelerated Learning What is SEAL? VICTORIAN Government secondary schools have been operating specific programs at authorised schools for gifted students since 1980. These have been known as Select Entry Accelerated Learning (SEAL) schools. The Academy of Accredited SEAL Schools (TAASS) has been established to maintain this tradition to enable groups of like minded students to develop academically, socially and emotionally. The SEAL Academy follows Gagné’s model for the definition of gifted and talented students. Entrance exams To gain entry into the SEAL program of a SEAL Academy school, students must achieve high performance results in an entrance exam. Students who wish to undertake the SEAL program in a particular school year, must sit for the entrance test the year before. The entrance exam takes place at each school at varying dates - please refer to the SEAL Academy school websites for particular entrance exam dates. A list of links is provided here <https://www. sealacademy.org.au/index.php/entrance-exams>. SEAL schools! SEAL stands for Select Entry Accelerated Learning. Understanding just what that means is one key to choosing the right secondary school for your child. Other words discussed when you hear the term SEAL include gifted, enrichment, enhancement, extension and talent. Finding your way around the maze of just what each school offers from these options and just what that means can sometimes be confusing, even daunting. It is important to understand that schools which offer a Select Entry Accelerated Learning program have earned the right to use this term. It’s usually shortened to SEAL in their information, and a school can only become a SEAL school by following specific guidelines and procedures that the

Government has set. The number of SEAL schools is limited, because these schools cater for a limited proportion of the population. This is where an understanding of the term gifted is needed. Giftedness is usually considered to be ability that cannot be attained by everybody, in a field such as academic, music, sport, art. Academic giftedness can be thought of as having intellectual potential that would place someone in about the top 10% of the population. If we accept the idea of academic or intellectual giftedness in the same way we accept giftedness in sport, then offering something equivalent to the Victorian Institute of Sport or the Australian Institute of Sport for academic ability makes sense. This is where SEAL schools shine. Why are there only a limited number of SEAL schools, you may ask. At any one year level across Victoria, there are close to 45,000 students. When we use the broad idea of academic giftedness as about 10% of the population, then we can see that we are trying to meet the educational needs of about 4,500 academically gifted students in each level. Placing some of these students in every school makes it difficult for teachers to meet their needs, because gifted students have characteristics that can make it very hard for them to work in a mixed-ability classroom and still reach their academic potential. Some of these characteristics include grasping facts, ideas and concepts more quickly than others, needing fewer exercises or learning activities to understand what is being taught, seeing ideas holistically or as a big picture not as small steps, and needing others who think like them to bounce ideas off and interact with.

Victoria University Secondary College VICTORIA University Secondary College is a co-educational state Year 7-12 college with three campuses. Our vision inspires students to ‘Create the Future’ and we offer a high quality education that provides for all students’ interests and abilities. Our college values ‘Aspire to Achieve’, ‘Strengthen the Community’ and ‘Respect Ourselves and Others’ support and guide all we do at VUSC. Our vision is future focused and empowering. We aim to encourage visionary thinking; to enable members of our learning community to adapt to an ever changing world and prepare for global challenges; to be adaptive and flexible in their thinking and to have the skills to engage with current and emerging technologies. We empower students to develop control over their own thinking and actions, develop the self-belief and confidence to persevere with learning challenges and tasks and to take initiative and act. Making connections, critical thinking and learning collaboratively are recognised at VUSC as important to the development of a learning community. We expect students to work hard, do their best, give something back to the community and most of all enjoy their educational experiences. At VUSC we encourage students to set aspirational goals for themselves and to work hard to achieve those goals. We value our community - at school and more broadly. Students are expected to contribute to making the community better in whatever way they can and often run fundraising events for local charities. To help them develop a global understanding, we have introduced an international education focus through creating connections with China, including a sister school relationship. Students have travelled to China each year for the last four years as part of the Victorian Young Leaders to China program. Again in 2017, another group of Year 9 students will have the opportunity to study in China. The college is intensely proud of our Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) specialist classes and school wide program, which prepares students for VCE, tertiary education and the workforce. Our partnerships with Beacon, Victoria University and the Australian Business and Community Network continue to expand, offering increasing opportunities for students including gaining scholarships, being mentored by professionals, touring a wide variety of businesses and learning about many careers first hand. Our partnership with Victoria University includes the Early University Program, which enables AVID students in Year 11 to complete a tertiary unit of work at VU and enables Year 12 students to commence their university degree. It is pleasing to see that this year 99% of our students received an offer at either university or TAFE. This year our graduating students are studying degrees in Accounting, Biomedical Science, Law, Business/Marketing, Engineering, Education, Science and Nursing/Midwifery to name a few. Several of our past students come back to speak to our current students about aspiring to achieve and how to make the most of their secondary schooling to prepare them for the world. However our focus begins in Year 7. From day one, we will teach your child how to aspire and succeed.

Wantirna College WANTIRNA College holds the development of the whole child at the centre of its philosophy of education. We see education as preparing our students with the necessary skills to access their future careers, but also to inspire their curiosity, creativity, imagination, compassion, self-knowledge, social skills and emotional health. The academic component begins before the child even starts with the College. The close ties with their primary school smoothing the transition between the two. Data is gathered about academic achievement so supportive, challenging and extending programs can be put in place early. A highly knowledgeable and experienced team of teachers tailors the learning activities to extend each child from their point of need and at the same time creates a culture of high expectations inspiring students to build confidence in themselves as learners. Flexible learning spaces in Year 7 mean students can work in like-minded or like-ability groupings, depending upon what will best stimulate learning. The curriculum in Years 7-9 is deliberately broad, ensuring each child can find and explore their areas of passion at the same time as being exposed to a wide range of knowledge and thinking. Success in their future beyond school will depend on their ability to respond to new and unknown situations and problems, so scaffolding this growth is essential. Students are supported in choosing the right subjects throughout their years in the College so they gradually piece together the knowledge, skills and behaviours that will lead to career success. The pathway to that success beyond the College is

Development of the whole child is at the centre of our philosophy through University, TAFE and apprenticeships. This growth all happens within an atmosphere which aims to develop broader knowledge, and values. Involvement in the arts is extended from the core curriculum through music, singing, performance and dance. An appreciation of the outdoors is nurtured through adventure camps, bike riding and canoeing backed up by the development of a theoretical understanding of sustainability through our links with the Knox Innovation, Opportunity and Sustainability Centre (KIOSC). Representing the College in team sport builds a sense of belonging which is supportive in itself and also allows students to learn how to win graciously as well as reacting positively to losing. A sense of social justice, and thinking of others, is promoted through student leadership opportunities and the support provided to charities chosen by the students. Wantirna College is committed to educating our students to be inquiring learners with high levels of literacy and numeracy. Prepared to be global, ethical citizens in the 21st century. Capable of showing resilience and flexibility of thinking. Willing to show initiative and take on challenges throughout their lives.

Westall Secondary College AT WESTALL Secondary College everything we do is based around the needs and wants of our students. This sounds like an obvious concept but what does it mean at Westall and what sets us apart: Personalised Learning We meet the needs of students by ensuring the learning is at the appropriate level for every student in every subject. We also offer a broad suite of contemporary elective programs (Aviation, Coding, Sports, Performing and Visual Arts, Entrepreneurship- to name a few) to engage and prepare students for the future. Wellbeing Our school values around ‘CARE’ are visible in everything we do. We truly have the calmest, most supportive and caring school environment I have seen. Pathways We know that we only have the students for a short time so everything we do is around preparing them for future success. The programs we offer are personalised to student’s desired pathways. Literacy A relentless focus across all subject areas and all year levels. Our number 1 priority that is resourced accordingly. Numeracy and STEM Numeracy is our other major building block for learning. We have trained STEM staff, a partnership with Deakin University and a new STEM program available at all year levels. Aim High Program A high achievers program in every subject across Years 7-10.
