Heroes reborn one of them - and the RSL, community members, and supporters. “It was a special day back in March 2015. My ward colleague Leticia Wilmot was the mayor at the time and it was a fantastic day for Emerald and the Cardinia Shire. It was a massive day - I remember it very fondly.” The film about Emerald’s historic project documents the journey from beginning to end - celebrating just what can be achieved when those in a small, tight-knit community band together. “We’re pleased to support this video through our Community Wellbeing Support grant,” Cr Owen said.
“This film will be promoted across our community and the wider community. It’ll be promoted among our schools so our school children can learn about the history of the project and why it came about. “It’ll be great for tourism - for Emerald and the hills community - and it’ll be great to inform our community about those 32 soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. “The walk itself promotes community wellbeing and getting people active, and learning about our history.” Emerald RSL president Peter Maloney said he had the utmost respect for

What started as just an embryo of an idea years ago has gone on to become Emerald’s lasting tribute to 32 fallen World War I soldiers from the area, and earlier this month a documentary was unveiled chronicling all the work that had gone into the creation of Anzac Walk and Anzac Place. The site neighbouring the Emerald RSL was officially opened by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove in March 2015 and has since gone on to hold a special place in the hearts and minds of all of those who call the area home.
Earlier this month, a documentary - produced by Avonsleigh pair Christine Weller and Matt Francis - was launched to a packed theatre at the Gemco Playhouse. A host of dignitaries attended the Saturday 1 July event including Cardinia Mayor Brett Owen and fellow Ranges Ward councillor Leticia Wilmot, as well as representatives from the RSL and local community groups. “No doubt this project is an amazing community project - Anzac Walk and Anzac Place,” Cr Owen said. “It’s had the support of three tiers of government - the Cardinia Shire being

Steady Clarke helps By Peter Douglas Selby-raised cyclist Simon Clarke is piecing together a fantastic, teamoriented performance in this year’s Tour de France, helping to lift his Cannondale Drapac team to 6th position after Stage 9. Although failing in a Stage 8 bid for a high placing, Clarke has proven to be the ultimate professional for his team, playing a role in assisting team-mate Rigoberto Uran’s incredible Stage 9 victory. Though, Clarke openly admitted he sought a higher placing for himself during Stage 8 from Dole to Station des Rousses. In an SBS interview, Clarke said he planned to make a move during the stage, but hadn’t anticipated the strength of the breakaway. “I had today’s stage pencilled in from a fair while ago. Obviously, I tried not to tell everyone because that gives it away,” Clarke said. “But, in the end, it turned out to be such a hard stage (because) that was just a quality breakaway

... they’re basically ex GC (general classification) riders and for me to match them on the final climb, I’m always going to have my work cut out. “What kind of brought me unstuck was that I needed to go deep on that category two (climb) to get across. “Although I rode myself into the bike race, I kind of rode my legs off to be there. Then, when it was time to go, I didn’t have anything left.” Clarke has every reason to be pleased, though. After Stage 9, he is 57th in the General Classification category and has been as high as 39th. His consistency comes amid the typical controversies and heartbreaks surrounding the Tour, the latest being countryman, and one race favourite, Richie Porte crashing out of the race. Clarke is among nine Australians who started this year’s Tour de France, and is becoming one of the more experienced riders.

dismay and horror as they realise the reality and devastation of war. I feel their despair as their mates die around them. I feel their pain at knowing they may never see their home or loved ones again. “It reduces me to tears when I think of the futility of it all. But this song’s lyrics have the power to make me all the more determined to never forget them. “Every time I hear Eric Bogle’s And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda I remember them. I’m sure we all do.” Descendants of some of ‘the 32’ were in the audience for the premiere screening of the documentary, which is now available for sale at the Emerald newsagency.
Cockatoo fatal accident A woman has died and two others have been taken to hospital with serious injuries following a two-car collision in Cockatoo on 9 July. Police report the collision between a yellow Ferrari and Ford Falcon sedan occurred at the intersection of Avon and Woori Yallock roads about 1.05pm. A 33-year-old Point Cook mum who was passenger in the 2005 model Ferrari died at the scene and the driver, a 45-year-old male was taken to Dandenong Hospital. A local couple from Cockatoo in the Ford Falcon, who were travelling west along Avon Road, had to be airlifted to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries following the collision. Detectives from the Major Collision Unit believe the Ferrari took a bend while travelling east on Avon Road moments before colliding with the Ford sedan which was travelling in the opposite direction. The marked speed for the road is 70km/h. It is reported that prior to the incident, a group of exotic cars passed through Emerald, driving towards Avonsleigh, one of which was a yellow Ferrari. Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the website at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Bicycle versus car A bicycle and a car collided on Sunday morning, 9 June, at Belgrave roundabout. The cyclist was travelling north through the roundabout towards Belgrave Gembrook Road, and the vehicle travelling south towards Burwood highway. Police report that the cyclist was halfway around the roundabout when he impacted on the rear driver’s side panel and was thrown from his bike, and it is believed that the vehicle failed to give way. Ambulance services attended the scene, and the cyclist was taken to The Royal Melbourne Hospital.

From front page “You can imagine that a lot of people wouldn’t have been too thrilled with that, however at the time the RSL was thinking on its feet and managed to salvage 31 of the 32 plaques that were on those trees. They ended up in the RSL, where they are today.” Mr Maloney said the RSL acknowledged the key role that Cardinia Shire Council, and in particular Kevin Alexander, played in the project. An unbelievable set of circumstances that were shrouded in coincidence led Ms Weller and Mr Francis to get involved in the project. At the launch of the film, Ms Weller spoke of the significance of its music and lyrics - specifically Eric Bogle’s classic And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda. “Music and lyrics have the power to take you on a journey and move you emotionally,” she said. “When we were looking for a song that epitomised the story of the 32 young men that Anzac Walk and Anzac Place was created to honour, there was only one song. “It’s a song I’ve heard at every dawn service I’ve ever been to. “Its lyrics take you on a journey the same journey our 32 young men had taken so many years ago. “I feel their excitement at the expectation of the adventure they’re about to embark on. Need to desex Animal
aid Mark Menze Animal Aid CEO
We can hardly believe it is already July. At Animal Aid, July means National Desexing Month; a nationwide initiative encouraging all pet owners to make the right decision and desex their pets. Each year Animal Aid desexes more than 1200 homeless animals through our welfare program; these animals are stray, unwanted or abandoned. As animal welfare advocates, it is one of our most important missions to help decrease the numbers of unplanned and unwanted litters of cats and dogs. It is so important that the cycle of breeding is broken, particularly that of
cats as they can become pregnant from just four months of age, and while they still have kittens in tow. Desexing one cat can prevent 370,000 from being born in a seven-year time period. As we are approaching the long breeding season in the warmer months, there has never been a better time to desex your pet. We have had over 900 kittens come into our shelters over the past 12 months; pet owners play a key role in preventing unwanted kittens and puppies. Desexing your pet saves lives! Desexing provides many benefits to both owners and companion animals. Cats and dogs are less likely to stray and mark their territory in and around your house. They are less likely to be injured fighting, to contract diseases and more likely to live long healthy lives.
They are often more relaxed and affectionate and, generally, live longer and happier lives. As an extra incentive to desex, the Animal Aid Vet Clinic is participating in National Desexing Month this July, we are offering significantly discounted desexing fees for cats and dogs of up to 30 per cent discount. Animal Aid works tirelessly to desex, rehabilitate and rehome unwanted animals but unfortunately there are many animals that don’t make it to animal shelters. They are abandoned to live and breed on the streets, around shopping centres, industrial complexes and in the wild. To find out more, or take advantage of our 30 per cent discount on desexing procedures during July, call the Animal Aid Veterinary Clinic on (03) 9739 0500 or visit www.animalaid.org.au. Melba hosts ‘reassuring’ NDIS information forums By Effie Caloutas Local disability provider Melba Support Services is hosting two information forums on Saturday 15 July at 2.30pm and Thursday 20 July at 7pm. The information will be held at the Lilydale United Church and on Anderson and George streets, Lilydale. The forums are aimed at ensuring people with disability and their families have all the information they need to commence the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). NDIS is the new way of providing support for Australians with disability, their families and their carers. Melba chief executive officer Glenn Foard believes the forums will be beneficial to families entering the NDIS. “We have run information sessions previously, and we’ve provided advice to people individually,” he said.
“Those who have attended our information sessions in the past have found them helpful and reassuring.” On the night, Melba will be explaining how the NDIS works, how people can best prepare for the NDIS and how Melba can assist families. Mr Foard believes that families will gain benefits from choosing Melba Support Services as their disability provider. “Over Melba’s 45-year history, we have developed a reputation for quality,” he said. “We respect people’s rights, we treat people with dignity and we employ great staff.” “Melba is the only disability provider in Australia to be accredited for person-centred excellence with distinction.” If you’re interested in attending, RSVP to Melba Support Services at melba@melbasupport.com.au or phone 9212 0100. 12352385-LB21-17

Friendly bus service
Yarra Ranges plan makes a sustainable statement
By Peter Douglas
By Kath Gannaway
A dial-a-bus service and streamlined, bi-directional routes may revolutionise public transport within the Yarra Ranges. After months of planning, hills-based group DirectLinx has unveiled its proposed bus network plan, which will next month be presented to Deputy Premier James Merlino and Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan. The plan includes 19 stops in total, with five planned for the Yarra Valley and 14 in the Dandenong Ranges. The plan comprises a mix of 14 stops that are directly connected to the network, with a further five offering a lesser ‘pass-through’ service. The proposed routes are bidirectional, meaning a streamlined service that allows users to better dictate their own movements, rather than the other way around. DirectLinx, along with Yarra Ranges Shire councillor Mike Clarke, flagged a new bus network in late 2015, citing frustrations with the present service. While only the route has been released, the group is also known to be pushing a shift towards a solar or electric bus service. Cr Clarke said the present service was inefficient, under-utilised and not cost effective for taxpayers. In a DirectLinx video released to promote their work, Cr Clarke spoke about the perceived issues. “The problem with the buses in the Dandenong Ranges is they are going on ... routes which don’t help people to get to where they want to go,” he said. “As a consequence, the buses are largely empty, or have one or two people on them, and they are costing the taxpayer. “My idea is to run smaller buses, minibuses of 15-20 people that run point-to-point between two centres.”
A Localised Planning Statement (LPS) for Yarra Ranges now rests with the minister for planning after being adopted by Yarra Ranges Council in June. The LPS has had a long and at times rocky road through council, with the wording around a ‘sustainable forest industry’ and inclusion of a History of the Regional Strategy Plan two areas of contention. The purpose of the LPS is to provide planning policy to support the protection of the unique features of Yarra Ranges region and as a guide for any proposed change to the planning scheme. The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges is one of four key tourism areas identified as of unique value to Victoria, deemed by the State Government to require special treatment. The key policies are to contain urban development, conserve rural land for agriculture and other nonurban uses and to protect biodiversity and significant landscapes. A Community Reference Group formed in 2015 to produce the document covered aspects as diverse as environment and heritage to community safety, economic development and utilities. Don Valley member of the CRG, Rick Houlihan, spoke in support of the motion to adopt the LPS at the meeting in Warburton on 27 June. Speaking as an individual member of the group, but not on behalf of the group, he said lengthy discussions had taken place on the 44 submissions received. Cr Tony Stevenson moved to adopt the document, saying it was a high level statement that was ex-
The proposed bus network plan for the Yarra Ranges, which will be presented to the Minister for Transport Jacinta Allan. The proposed network provides access to major rail stations within the Yarra Ranges, including Lilydale, Boronia, Ringwood, Belgrave, Tecoma, Upwey and Upper Ferntree Gully stations. Cr Clarke told the ‘Mail’ there had been much community support for a change in approach to public transport in the Yarra Ranges. “The present system is causing unnecessary isolation in the community,” he said. “We’re looking for a purposeful, meaningful plan that will create a better service for the region.” Proposed Yarra Valley stops: Warburton, Healesville, Yarra Glen, Lilydale and Coldstream (passthrough stop).

emplary for its support of the Yarra Ranges region and its future. “What we’re seeing here is the culmination of a thorough process, a great deal of engagement with the broader community, the Community Reference Group who have provided valuable input, and other stakeholders. Cr Mike Clarke opposed the motion saying it was an important document and that council should get it right. “There’s an opportunity to improve the wording slightly ... (there are) important matters that were left out,” he said. Cr Tim Heenan said he had issues with the statement’s take on forest policies. Referencing the statement, he said “Ensure forested areas are managed to be compatible with the protection of water resources - not happening; forest value - not happening; landscape and long-term protection of biodiversity - not happening. Cr Stevenson pointed out that the Regional Strategy Plan has the capacity to deal with forest policy. “The Local Planning Statement needs to be consistent with the Regional Strategy Plan; they need to work hand in glove with each other,” he said. “This document has had a thorough working over; not everybody got everything they wanted, but the intent of what most people is reflected in this document.” Councillors Stevenson, Cox, Child, McAllister, Higgins and Avery voted in favour, with councillors Clarke, Heenan and Cliff against. The document will go to the State Planning Minister, Richard Wynne, for approval.

Hair-raising challenge set By Peter Douglas Gembrook mother of two Tracey Turco will next month embark on a gruelling Kokoda Track challenge, in a bid to raise awareness of alopecia areata. The medical condition is life-changing for those affected, with an estimated 500,000 Australians battling the challenges of dramatic hair loss in the scalp and around the body. Tracey, 43, has been living with alopecia for over nine years and agrees it can be difficult. Her journey began when she was aged 33, when her husband noticed a bald patch at the back of her head. Within a matter of weeks, all her hair had fallen out, including her eyelashes and eyebrows. “It was a huge shock and I was extremely scared. In the beginning, it was really difficult to come to terms with it,” she said. “Everyone has a part of themselves that they like best; well, mine was my hair. “To lose it was utterly devastating. It made me, and still
makes me, feel less feminine.” Tracey said alopecia was not just about hair loss, but about a loss of identity. “You literally become a different person - how you see yourself, how others treat you and how you cope with things, sometimes, literally, overnight,” she said. Tracey wears a wig in public most of the time and said she was slowly coming to terms with living with alopecia, but still shed a tear occasionally. “Although most people react pretty well to my alopecia, I can sense their pity. Unfortunately, there still is a real lack of understanding,” she said. Tracey is undertaking the Kokoda challenge, which will see her hiking through 95kms of rugged mountains, rainforests and jungles. Her aim is to raise essential funds for the Australia Alopecia Areata Foundation (AAAF) and improve the lives of those living with the condition. AAAF is a not-for-profit organisation that provides people

WAKING up to rain on the roof wasn’t a frequent occurrence throughout June. Although the cold has started to bite throughout the Yarra Ranges, you’re forgiven if you’ve been left wanting to see the wet stuff falling from above. According to the latest Bureau of Meteorology statistics, the Yarra Ranges experienced one of the driest June months in the past decade. Just 30.4mm fell in the Yarra Valley, as recorded from the Coldstream weather station, which is less than half the median average rainfall for the region, presently at 67.2mm.
To put this in perspective, the recorded rainfall is lower than in the peak drought years during and before Black Saturday, with 49.6mm (2009), 41.4mm (2008) and 59.8 (2007) recorded. Although just 22mm fell in 2006; which is a far cry from the high of 100.6mm recorded in 1998. Meanwhile, the news was much the same in the Dandenong Ranges, with the Ferny Creek station recording only a slightly better 53.2mm for June. Though this is well below the median for the area of 122.3mm, suggesting the Dan-
denong Ranges fared worse overall in terms of the expected average. Weather forecasts are predicting a change in fortunes, with rain forecast for the remainder of the week. Coldstream weather station; recordings for month of June: 30.4mm (2017); 88.6mm (2016); 31.6mm (2015); 80.8mm (2014), 64.4mm (2013) Ferny Creek weather station; recordings for month June: 53.2mm (2017), 179.2mm (2016), 50mm (2015), 146.6mm (2014), 186.4mm (2013).

Art’s connected to nature By Derek Schlennstedt To coincide with the change in seasons, Belgrave illustrator and watercolour artist, Susie Parry is unveiling her new exhibition that reflects the cycles of plant life and human life. Her passion for beauty, the intricacies of natures and the vibrancy of colour and how light falls on objects have led her to the intimate connections between humans and nature which feature in her exhibition. Her solo exhibition, called One Step at a Time features at Burrinja Gallery and showcases flowers and objects she has found in her backyard and in the Dandenong Ranges. “I go to Grants picnic ground three to four times a week - the staff there know me now,” Susie laughs. The exhibition includes over a year’s work of detailed illustrations which represent growth in nature and in life through the use of plants. Susie portrays this growth with works of leaves, flowers and shoes which she said symbolised human growth. “While I was walking I looked down once and saw my foot among a really nice composition of leaves and that’s what started it,” she said, “What makes us is our genetic and parents' DNA and our surroundings, which will determine who we are and the shoe is the only piece of clothing that shows our growth.” “The shoes represent our growth and the paths we take.” The exhibition illuminates a message of beauty, hope and assurance - to be present in our lives through the different stages of development as we remember to continue to take

After his movie-stealing cameo in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man fully and triumphantly enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe in SpiderMan: Homecoming. Superpowered high-school student Peter Parker (Tom Holland), aka Spider-Man, is desperate to prove his worth and join the Avengers, and sees his chance after discovering salvager Adrian Toomes’ (Michael Keaton) illegal arms business. Spider-Man: Homecoming is a compelling coming-of-age story without retreading the title hero’s well-known origins. Holland was born to play Peter Parker; he conveys the perfect note of bravado, humility and sweet-natured awkwardness at all times. Interspersed amid Peter’s serious supervillain investigation are more ligh-thearted sub-plots involving Peter’s family and academic lives, with plenty of clever, natural humour. But Homecoming effectively balances these light and serious elements, drawing relatable parallels between Peter’s double-life and the secrets, responsibilities and desire for acceptance all teenagers have. The thrilling action scenes are full of creative physical comedy and showcase Peter’s nimble physicality. Keaton delivers his trademark dry wit and scrappy charm as Toomes, aka the Vulture, portraying a surprisingly sympathetic villain. Toomes is an industrious, honourable working-class family man who is tired of being trampled on by big business and bureaucracy; you find yourself supporting his intentions, just not his criminal methods, as he makes a living selling reverse-engineered alien weaponry on the black market. Spider-Man: Homecoming is an exciting, engaging and endearing look at adolescence through the lens of superhero antics. - Seth Hynes

Working to treat and prevent eye conditions, Yarra Ranges Optical offers Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), a sophisticated scanning system that produces highly detailed images of the internal structure of the eye. Taking only a few minutes, no drops or preparation is required for an OCT scan. Double-up in the top spot By Cameron Hutchison The weekend saw the last game in Round 11 for Division 1 being played and Round 12 for Division 2. The Under 18s had a weekend off and more shuffling of the ladders occurred because of the weekend’s results. After 11 Rounds in Division 1, Olinda and Wandin share top spot with Healesville just two points behind in third, Woori Yallock in fourth and Upwey 10 points behind in fifth. Second Division has seen some big moves with Seville and Belgrave fighting it out for top spot this week, Powelltown is clear by one win in third, Yarra Glen finds itself in fourth and only one game ahead of fifth-placed Alexandra. The Under 18s are playing for positions in the top eight, while Emerald and Mt Evelyn look like they have a stronghold on positions one and two. Wandin sits third with Healesville in fourth, while Upwey is clear in fifth and Warburton, Woori Yallock and Gembrook make up the rest of the eight. Division 1 Netball: Olinda is comfortably sitting on top with Wandin six points behind in second place. Woori Yallock is hot on their heels in third, with Monbulk and Warburton sharing fourth spot.
