the most beautiful, rewarding thing I could do."

EVERYONE needs a good night's sleep. When you're a parent this can be easier said than done, but there are things you can do to ensure everyone in your family is getting enough shut-eye. Sleep consultant Cheryl Fingleson has helped hundreds of parents establish gentle and safe sleep habits for their child. As 'The Sleep Coach', Cheryl works with families to improve settling and sleep techniques, establish good sleeping routines and transition a child from cot to bed. Often, she says, parents simply don't know how to get their child to sleep and stay asleep. "The unfortunate thing is there is so little information out there," she said.

"Mums are taught how to fall pregnant, they are taught how to push out the baby, they say they are taught a little bit about settling, they are taught how to feed. "A lot of people say 'my babies sleep', but often they don't. They think it's a reflection that they are doing something wrong. They need the knowledge that's all." A certified sleep coach, Cheryl is passionate about babies and sleep and loves seeing the results of her work.

Here, Cheryl answers common questions parents have about children and sleep. When can I sleep train my baby? Up until 4.5 months the brain is not developed enough to sleep train. Prior to that we like to put the baby down so they can sleep on their own. In the early stages, parents make the mistake of keeping their baby awake too long. In first few weeks all babies do is sleep and eat. When they get overtired their brain gets wired and they can't fall asleep. It's important to mimic the environment of the womb by keeping them warm and swaddled. From 4.5 months you can start to try and settle. Babies are like us - they like to know what's coming next. How do you help babies sleep? The four key things I tell parents is routine, sleep window, consistency, and drowsy but awake. Routine is the constant routine of bedtime. If a child is on solids it could be solids, bath, milk, story and then bed. The baby starts to know what is coming next. Obviously an early bedtime is better or they start getting overtired.

"You go into homes when marriages are falling apart because people can't think straight because of a lack of sleep," the grandmother said.

The sleep window is the time the baby starts showing sleep signs. This could be yawning, pulling ears or, if they are a bit older, clumsiness. If they get overtired it's hard for them to fall asleep because cortisone is released and that acts as adrenaline - that's what we call a second wind.

"You see them a week or two later and you won't believe the change. It's

Consistency is simply whatever you do, do it consistently.

Drowsy but awake means they are in this state when they go to bed. We don't want to feed to sleep or rock to sleep. When we put them in the cot or bed, we want them to be awake. This is because when they wake up from their sleep cycle they will want you to do whatever you did to get them back to sleep. Sleep regressions - are they real? What should I expect? I don't like to call them sleep regressions. I like to call them sleep progressions or growth spurts. You invariably find that a baby goes through a growth spurt or milestone, which often affects sleep because they have to practice moves in their cots. With crawling, for example, they get up and practice crawling in their cot. It's important to keep to a routine during this time, which will pass. When will my child sleep through the night? How can I help make this happen? It's a very difficult question. At 12 months, some mums are happy if their child feeds and goes back to sleep quickly. Some babies can sleep through from six months or even sooner, some take longer, there is no fixed rule.

six months, if the child is underweight the doctor may want the baby to have the extra feed.

At nine months the amount of sleep can drop between 13 to 14 hours with two naps.

How do I transition my child from cot to bed?

This reduces to about 13 or 13.5 hours for children aged 12 to 18 months. Two naps continue until around 15 to 18 months.

I don't like to move a baby from a cot to a bed until they're 2.5 years or 3 years old. Before this, their brain is not formed enough to keep an instruction for 12 hours. However, if the child is getting out the cot you can transition them for safety. When you transition, you have to give strict instructions not to get out. The older they are, the easier it is for them to understand. Parents have to be firm in their instructions. Discipline is required to keep them in their bed. Also, a lot of parents move their child to a bed because they need the cot for their next child. This is not a good reason to transition a child to a bed. When do children stop napping? It varies. I believe children need a daily nap or a rest up until when they start kindergarten. Even when they are in kindergarten they still need some naps . But it depends on each individual child. How much sleep does my child need?

There are many issues that may affect sleep, such as snoring, colds, teething, reflux, sleep associations and many more. We always rule out medical issues before sleep training your baby.

There is no hard and fast rule. Sleep varies from child to child.

It is definitely not advisable for newborn babies to sleep through the night as their stomach is the size of a pea so they need to eat more often two to three hourly.

For newborns it's about 17 hours, dropping down to 15 hours. By four months sleep can drop down to 15 hours, including three to four naps.

While babies can sleep through from

The amounts that follow are for a 24-hour period and include naps and the night sleep.

Those aged six months need around 14 to 15 hours with two to three naps.

Sat 8 Dec 11am - 2pm A visit from Santa! Free face painting and family entertainment. The ďŹ rst 20 children to visit Santa will receive a $10 centre gift card

From 18 months to 4 years of age, they will go from having 13 hours to 11.5 hours a day. Around the age of 3, toddlers often stop their nap during the day. Kids aged 5 to 9 years need about 10 or 11 hours a day. From the ages of 10 to 15 years, kids need about 9 to 9.5 hours and most definitely don't get that. How do I know if my child is getting enough sleep? If they aren't sleeping enough, they start to have tantrums. You will also see a change in their moods. It's important to remember that very active children hide their tired signs very well. They are the ones that need the most sleep. The very active children you've got to watch because they need more sleep than the others. Get them to bed at 6.30pm.

kids to bed until 8.30pm or 9pm. It's too hard for the children and they get used to it. Make sure you plan and get them to sleep earlier. This means pre-prepared dinners or giving them your leftovers from the night before. What is the best way to deal with my child's bedtime at daylight savings? For some children, especially older children, it will make no difference. You'll just go forward or back an hour. For sensitive children and those who are highly strung, a week or 10 days before daylight saving start moving their bedtime by 10 minutes for a couple of days, then 10 minutes for another couple of days. This means when the clocks change you are on the right time. For those children who aren't so sensitive, you can move it 15 minutes and 15 minutes. It's not difficult. It's good to move it slowly.

What is the best time to send a child to bed?

My child keeps having nightmares. What should I do?

The best time for kids aged 5 years and under is 6.30pm, or half an hour either side, because of their biological clock. The majority of kids are ready for bed between 7pm and 8pm. Even a 10 year-old should be getting into bed and reading and relaxing at this time.

There are nightmares and night terrors.

How can I make my child go to bed earlier?

With a nightmare, you can wake the child and bring them out of it. It's important not to put the TV on an hour before bedtime. For kids who have nightmares, read them a nice book before bedtime and talk about nice things they've done in the day.

Just routine. The thing that is difficult is a lot of parents work and they don't pick their kids up until 6pm, so it's difficult to get the kids to bed at 6.30pm or 7pm. A lot of parents don't get their

Night terrors are horrible things to go through. It's best to leave them alone, but be there so they don't hurt themselves. Just don't touch them and don't wake them.

just for kids A CITY

Children can pretend to be a firefighter in the mini city.

By Melissa Grant IMAGINE a mini city where kids can learn what it's like to be a doctor, firefighter or weather presenter and use the money they earn to purchase products and services. It sounds fanciful, but the concept will soon become a reality in Melbourne. KidzMondo is opening a miniature city for kids in 2020 at Box Hill Institute's Lilydale campus. It will boast replicas of airports, banks, factories, theatres, shops, police stations, media outlets and supermarkets in a 7000sqm building.

their own currency, enjoy beauty treatments and learn how to make pizza.

Children can le ar n to be a pilo t at the KidzMon do mini city.

Institute, said KidzMondo provided a setting where children could experiment through play and real hands-on activities.

It will be the first miniature replica city in Australia to be established by KidzMondo, which has centres in Beirut, Istanbul and Doha.

"They will work together and learn from each other and because they are having fun they will retain what they are doing," he said.

The 'edutainment' centres' aim to inspire kids aged 4-14 years through educational and engaging activities to prepare them for the world of adulthood. KidzMondo Australia CEO Norman Gray said the facility would help better prepare children for life after school. "There is a limit to what you can do in a formal classroom setting," he explained.

Children will be able to take care of patients as a doctor or nurse, save lives as a fireman and get behind the wheel as a race car driver.

"Kids learn best through doing things, and when you're in a school setting and there is a whole bunch of theory to be passed off."

They will even be able to trade in

Mr Gray, the former CEO of Box Hill

The KidzMondo city will feature real-world facilities, including banks.

the facility without an alarm going off. "They are secure there ... (and) the building is all designed as kids safe. They can do their own thing," Mr Gray said. Each child will typically spend between four and five hours exploring the centre.

The KidzMondo centre will feature 80 different activities. Each area will have a facilitator to supervise and provide children with theoretical background about the activity being undertaken.

More than 250,000 students are expected to visit KidzMondo Melbourne in its first year of operation, with the centre to be popular destination for school excursions.

Parents can watch through glass windows, but are encouraged to drop their child off or wait in the parents lounge.

Mr Gray said the centre would provide worksheets for teachers to use before and after the visit to maximise the facility's educational value.

Each child will be fitted with a security bracelet that tracks them in the centre, which will have more than 400 security cameras that are constantly monitored.

Entry to the centre is expected to cost $37, with discounted prices for school excursions.

Also, children won't be able to leave

KidzMondo also plans to rollout another centres in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth in the next five years.

Nesting 2.0: Preparing older siblings for a new baby

LAUREN GARDINER, a Melbourne mum of three and author of a new story book for soon to-be-big brothers and sisters called 'baby + me', believes that sharing the pregnancy and nesting experience with your children can help prepare them for the significant changes a new baby can bring. Pregnant again? Mum of three and author Lauren Gardiner with her new book baby + me. Picture: Rob Carew

Congratulations! Hospital bag packed - tick. Car seat installed - tick. Netflix shows selected for late night breastfeeding sessions - tick. You've got this, right? But hang on ... what about your older child or children? Introducing a new baby into a family is possibly the biggest thing to have ever happened to your older child. Debbie Isaac, a Melbourne-based occupational therapist with many years' experience and three grown-up kids of her own, says that children can experience a range of feelings. Jealousy, surprise, frustration and bewilderment are common emotions in the early days of a new arrival. Some children feel "absolute shock", Ms Isaac says. "Children have seen the big tummy but have difficult reconciling that with the end product (the newborn baby)." Preparing children for a new baby can help them cope. Ms Isaac suggests providing information and sticking with routines. Equally important is letting the child know that they are loved and special. But preparations need not be expensive or elaborate. Nicole Avery, a mum of five, the author of the book "Planning with Kids" and also a popular blog of the same name, suggests involving kids in planning for the baby's arrival. "In my own experience, some activities are more engaging than others, depending on the child's personality, interest level and age," she said. "Sharing picture books and pretend play with a doll were helpful in my second pregnancy. "In my third pregnancy, both boys (then four and five) loved making a shopping list of baby items. Nappies were a real curiosity ... probably because it played to their interest in poo and wee!" Here are Lauren's top ideas for sharing the pregnancy and nesting with your children: 1. The talk! Even if you're not showing it can be hard to hide a pregnancy. People will soon notice that you're opting for orange juice and avoiding the cheese platter.

Make the message relatable (for example, refer to another child with a new baby they know). Alternatively, use an ultrasound picture. And if all else fails - point to your tummy! Parents should also sensitively manage other people's messages about the baby as they may upset your older children.

With three boys and one girl, in her fifth pregnancy Nicole's response to comments about a preferred gender was "we are just happy with a healthy baby".All the hype about the new baby can also be overwhelming for your older children.

Some people might talk about the baby like there's absolutely no one else in your life (such as that toddler clinging to your leg). Here, change the conversation to include the other children. 2. Books, books, books! There are some fantastic picture books about new babies. The author will have spent countless hours thinking from the child's perspective and crafted the story to help children with the adjustment (trust me - I know because it's what I've spent the last 16 months doing). As well as being a fun and intimate experience for adult and child, sharing a book can prompt further discussion. 3. Let your body be a guide! Your body is simultaneously growing a baby and preparing for labour and readying the milk supply - WOW! Your body can also help prepare your older children for a new baby - so try to embrace it and let them embrace it too (literally).By letting your older child touch your belly and feel a kick, you're nurturing the beginnings of a very special relationship. 4. All in for nesting! Your older children can help with preparations for the new arrival. In Nicole's book, "Planning with Kids", she suggests older siblings can help with setting up the baby's bassinet, making meals in advance, washing baby clothes and looking at baby photos. These activities provide an opportunity to talk about the baby - its size, its routine, its capabilities and some of the demands and disruptions for the family (eg night waking). Having your children help with these tasks also shows them they can have a role to play (rather than simply telling them). 5. Baby projects! If your kids are into art, they could complete an art project for the new baby - such as a drawing for the nursery wall or a handmade card. Grandparents can get in on the act here too. My mum helped my boys create a beautiful welcome home banner for our third child, which now has a place amongst our most treasured keepsakes. 6. Sharing memories! We love to look back on photos of our children when they were little, including ultrasound photos and tell stories about those times. Share these with your children and discuss how the baby is just like they were and how they are different now. And does it get easier? "Yes," says Nicole. "When you do have a few, once you put in the work for the first one or two it flows on to the others. The older ones lead the process with the younger ones." So there's good news for those planning an entire basketball team like Nicole! www.caseycardiniakids.com.au

KEEPING UP WITH THE By Melissa Meehan IF you haven't heard of Jarrad, Michael and Reid Duggan-Tierney you may have been living under a rock. You might also know them as the Real Dads of Melbourne - an instafamous family with more than 91,000 followers on Instagram.

"We take a lot of that and give to charity - whether it be someone less fortunate or we will give it to our chosen charity," Jarrad said. "We don't want him to be entitled, we weren't brought up like that." Michael says that toys these days are pretty disposable and want to raise Reid to grow up with that in mind.

Jarrad and Michael are one of approximately 6,800 same sex couples with a child in Australia.

And even the gifts they keep - they roll them out slowly over the months following Christmas, so it's not over the top.

And while their family dynamic is different to most, they share the same struggles navigating parenthood and finding the balance of routine, playtime, homework and a busy social life.

"The unreliability of Australia Post actually works really well for us," Michael jokes.

The social media influencers are gearing up for Christmas, and like many parents of inner Melbourne kids try to find a balance when it comes to gifts for eight-year-old Reid.

"It means that Reid gets presents dribble in right through January because we've got family interstate." As they prepare to put up their Christmas tree, the Duggan-Tierney's are looking forward to reminiscing about years gone past.

"Kids get a lot throughout the year," Jarrad said.

Each year since Reid was born they've bought a special ornament.

"And we think Reid gets a lot during the year so he knows at Christmas time that he doesn't get that much."

"When we put up the tree we talk about the memories of where we purchased it and how old Reid was," Jarrad says.

Unlike many, the Duggan-Tierney's are lucky enough to have brands sending them things to promote online - especially at Christmas, and it's important for them that because of it, Reid doesn't become entitled.

"We've got heaps of other decorations on the tree, including eight years of home-made decorations, but every year we buy a special glass one and put the date underneath."

Real Dads of Melbourne WE TRY TO

capture the highlights JARRAD and Michael DugganTierney didn't set out to become insta-famous. What started out as a way for family members living interstate to see their son Reid grow up quickly grew into a 91,000-person following.

Reid has been involved in every choice, too, - even as a baby Jarrad and Michael would hold him up to the decorations and get him to choose a favourite. "When we are on holidays throughout the year we will hunt for decorations to remind us of our experience and holidays," Michael said. "This year we went to Disneyland and bought an ornament of Mickey and Minnie Mouse kissing which is quite

significant for us because we got engaged this year. So that will be our 2018 bauble. "Reid chose that one out of the wedding themed ornaments and we love it." While they're not sure where they will spend Christmas this year, they are still receiving tenders from loved ones, it's going to be special. Follow the Real Dads of Melbourne on Instagram.

"I think we became interesting during the time of the same sex marriage debate - some people had never seen a modern family actually functioning and people were only getting information, not the tactile image of a family who loved each other," Jarrad said. "We are just a typical family." The pair, and eight-year-old Reid, who was born via surrogacy, share photos and videos receiving thousands of likes and comments every day.

The most popular? Definitely Reid. "People always say we love Reid," Jarrad said. "We try to capture the highlights, but there is a lot we don't share. And now that he's eight I ask permission to post, and sometimes he says no." It's very different to the cute baby in the pram all those years ago - now he's worried whether it was his best dancing. "He's always been very comfortable with himself and is very comfortable in his own skin," Michael says. "He's not just like that at home with me taking sneaky footage, he's like that at school and with friends. He's known for being an extrovert." - Melissa Meehan

your life It’s

AS a mum, it's often difficult not to feel frustrated or stressed out.

Busy schedules and a child's testing behaviour can make you feel like you're in a survival mode of sorts. When the frustration and stress leads to yelling at your child, you're likely to feel even worse than you did to begin with. It's a situation Heather Lindsay knows well. As the founder of Blissed Out Mums, Heather has helped more than 2500 mums overcome the guilt to become calmer and more patient parents. The registered nurse became a motherhood coach after battling postnatal depression in the weeks after the birth of her second child. "I became a single mum when I was 28 weeks pregnant. It was a traumatic experience," she explained.

"When my daughter was born, I ended up seeing a GP, went on antidepressants and saw a psychologist. "After six weeks it wasn't working anymore. As a single mum with two kids I was like 'I don't have time for this. I don't have time to go over the past'." So Heather turned to life coaching. "My life did a complete 180. I was happy again. My kids were thriving. Life was the way I wanted it to be." However, Heather had noticed there

were many other women who weren't happy with the mums they had become.

Feeling inspired to bring life coaching to other mums, Heather undertook training in life coaching and mental health. She started Blissed Out Mums, a parenting service that helps mothers via online programs and workshops. Women can also get one-on-one help. "I've found the biggest things mums don't like is that they are always feeling frustrated, they're stressed out, yelling and taking it out on their children," Heather explained. "They end up feeling so guilty they don't enjoy the time with their children, or going to work." So how do you stop yelling at the kids? These are Heather's top tips for being a calmer mum: Breathe: When a child is yelling or screaming our body enters a stress response and we don't think clearly. If we do some deep breathing it helps push the stress response into a relaxation response. If you take 18 seconds to do that before you respond to your child, chances are you won't yell. Expectations: It's important to take a step back and look objectively at our kids' behaviour. All behaviour is communication - they're trying to tell us something, they just don't know how to.

12404105-SN50-18

Fill your kids tummies this summer season with our wholesome ingredients from Berwick Bulk Foods! zero waste, teach your children a sustainable and fun way to shop!

You need to support them emotionally and fix the cause of the problem. Self-care: A lot of the time if we're stressed about our laundry and relationships, we don't have patience for our children. Self-care is important - we can't parent from an empty cup. Sitting down even for a few minutes a day and doing something for yourself is important Be open: I'm a big advocate for open communication with children. It helps if you say 'Mum is really sorry but she is really cranky today, I didn't need to yell at you'. It helps build that secure attachment. Look at the big picture: When your children move out or when they are reading your eulogy at your funeral, how do you want them to remember you? You don't want them to remember being taken places or being given toys - you want them to remember the connection they had with their mum. If you can look at the big parenting picture and beyond the day to day struggles it helps guide your own behaviour and be the mum you want to be. Heather says it's also important to remember that nobody is a perfect parent.

Heather Lindsay, the founder of Blissed Out Mums.

As a single mum to three kids, aged 7, 4 and 22 months, she admits there's even times when she gets irritated. "There are still some days I get frustrated and cranky, but it's about knowing what different things to turn to," she said. "One of the biggest lessons I learnt when I became a single mum was that if I didn't look after myself my children suffered and there was nobody else to pick up the pieces.

In the Swim

Kingswim

dives into Clyde North

KINGSWIM will open its new centre at Clyde North in January. Kingswim Business and Strategy Manager Craig Dowsing says the team is excited to provide local kids with the necessary skills to survive and thrive in the water. "The City of Casey has been one of Victoria's fastest growing areas since the 1980s and the population is set to rise another 200,000 to 500,000 over the next 25 years," he said. "Despite such a large population and demand for services, local parents are still having to drive considerable distances to access swimming lessons and of the centres available, may face limited options." The new Kingswim centre at Clyde North will provide 200 scheduled swimming classes each week, potentially providing those hundreds of children with a vital life skill. Once complete, the new facility will include a purpose built, state-of-the art 20m x 6 lane learn to swim indoor pool. The pool will be heated to 32 degrees to ensure little ones can enjoy their swimming all year around. Mr Dowsing said the need to learn to swim had never been greater.

However, the survey also revealed younger demographics had a much higher swimming ability, which correlated to the swimming lessons they received as children. Close to half of 18-24-year-olds said they had swimming lessons through three or more channels (at home/at a swim school/at primary school), with 84% believing they received adequate swimming lessons as a child. This demonstrates how crucial it is for children to receive professional swimming lessons in addition to anything taught at home. "It's our mission to ensure every child has access to swimming lessons and the chance to develop the confidence and ability to stay safe in the water and we can't wait to provide kids in the Casey Cardinia area that chance," Mr Dowsing said. Kingswim Clyde North will be located within the Ramlegh Springs on Clyde Estate on Tuckers Road, Clyde North. Registrations are now open, with places expected to fill quickly. Local parents are encouraged to visit kingswim.com.au/clyde-north or call 5945 3265 to enrol their child.

It only takes 20

seconds

for a toddler to drown

ALMOST 20 children under the age of four drowned last year - the majority of them in swimming pools. And all it takes for 20 seconds for a toddler to drown. While that number was down on the previous year, Kidsafe Victoria general manager Jason Chambers says it is an issue that needs to be addressed. "Drowning continues to be one of the leading causes of accidental death for Australian children under five years of age," he said. "While safety barriers can be effective in reducing the risk of backyard pool drowning incidents, evidence suggests that a large number of drowning deaths are the result of barriers that are faulty, or non-compliant with Australian standards." Senator and Minister for Sport Bridget McKenzie said: "We are a nation of water lovers and thanks to decades of campaigning we have brought our drowning rates down - but we need to

Teaching critical survival AT Paul Sadler Swimland, learn to swim classes are offered to children as young as 4 months old. The programs are based on teaching survival skills at every level and equipping swimmers with the skills they need to be safer in the water. With statistics showing drowning still the leading cause of accidental death of children aged under 5 years, teaching children skills to swim safer is incredibly important. It's particularly important when, according to the American Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, participation in formal swimming lessons was associated with an 88% reduction in the risk of drowning. Australia is a nation surrounded by open water and being in and around the water is a significant part of our favourite past times. It's therefore important for children to be prepared with skills to help them swim safer. At Paul Sadler Swimland, the babies program (Swordy Tots) runs from 4 months to approximately 3 years and offers classes for free to 4 and 5 month old babies. These classes are a great,

fun way to introduce babies to the water. They are full of fun activities that focus on water awareness, mobility, safety and survival.

move the dial even further. "I urge all Australians to watch their children around water, swim at patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags, to wear life jackets when on boats and watercraft, avoid alcohol around water and to teach their children about swimming and water safety." While pool and spa barriers play an important role in reducing the risk of childhood drowning, Kidsafe is reminding all parents to keep an eye on kids around the water. Common issues with pool barriers include: ■ Gates and doors that don't self-latch or self-close ■ Climbable objects near the barrier, such as pot plants, chairs, pool pumps near the pool barrier which could allow a child to climb over the fence ■ Excess space under the fence, and; ■ Misuse (propping the pool gate open) For more information, visit www. kidsafevic.com.au

skills

From around 3 years the program provides great opportunities for children to develop life-saving water safety and survival skills and become competent swimmers in a tension free, fun and exciting environment. All of the levels within the entire program are designed to build safer swimmers both in swimming pools and the open water. The transition from swimming pools to open water is considerable - with 1km in the pool being the equivalent to around 100m in the open water. Hence, the reasons our programs encourage and teach all our swimmers to reach their Swordy 1km medal. With centres in Narre Warren and Carrum Downs, as well as across Melbourne, now is the time to get your kids into swimming lessons and have a safer Summer. Call Narre Warren on 8790 5540 or Carrum Downs on 9782 9444 to book in your free trial class.

Paul Sadler Swimland programs are based on teaching survival skills at every level.

Life tyle

Life on the road: Emma, Cam and Flynn.

The family have so far visited some incredible sites.

Young family sharing the parenting load and life on the road By Danielle Galvin

"Cam always said to me that he w wanted to be a "stay at home Dad" as m much as I wanted to be a "stay at home M Mum".

EMMA Barr and her husband Cam are embarking on the adventure of a lifetime with their one-year-old son, leaving behind life in the big city to travel the country in a van, their very own tiny home on wheels.

"About three years ago we knew we w were going to start planning on having a family which is when we actively s started taking steps that would enable u to equally share the parenting roles." us

But the pair aren't taking it easy on the road with young Flynn, they're also committed to growing their online empire and business venture, all the while taking in the sights of outback Australia. "We have no time restrictions on how long we will be gone for," Emma explains. "I believe it will be more the fact that we have grown out of the van, however, I believe we will spend at least a year going around Australia." It's taken a lot of planning for the Sydney family, as well as a bit of nerve, to get the idea off the ground and make it a reality, as well as being picky when it comes to what to pack for life on the road. "We have actively been de-cluttering for over a year before we moved into the van and in the two months prior reduced our wardrobes to fit in a carry on suitcase each," she said. "It was all about figuring out what we really needed and what we would actually use." Before they became parents, Emma was a real estate agent and Cam was working in travel, but both had a yearning to enjoy a different lifestyle. When Flynn was born, Emma knew

a general plan to make sure the week runs smoothly and they prioritise family time. "Generally during the week I will work from 8am - 12pm either at a cafe or a co-working space," she said. "So together we will get Flynn up and have breakfast together before I head off to work. "Then we swap over at lunch and C Cam is able to go for a run and then h head to work or training in the a afternoons. "We still try to have dinner together a a family and spend quality time as t together.

The new mobile home they're travelling Australia in.

"This being said every week is d different for us and we are very flexible w with what happens just making sure we e equally get our "me time"."

she wanted to put her skills to good use.. "I always wanted to become a mother and Flynn is one of my greatestt achievements," she said. "But, when I became a mum, I needed something to challenge that entrepreneurial side of my brain. "Creating this business has made me a better mum and I want to help other women looking for a way to pursue new careers, without taking them away from their kids." Emma runs a digital marketing firm, iLEADS.com.au, all the while, they're showing Flynn a new way of life. It means they consider themselves to be completely equal parents. There's no primary caregiver when it comes to their son, which explains their 50-50 parenting approach. "This is something that we always wanted to be able to do as parents," she said.

Another important factor for the pair i ensuring they both get some time is a alone. Young Flynn has settled in to the nomadic way of life. It's this commitment to share the parenting roles 50-50 that's made all the difference for the young family.

"The biggest thing that I believe it has done is given us complete understanding for what the other person has been through, especially during a tough day," she said.

Cam, a dive instructor, has flexibility in terms of when he works.

"We know the exhaustion and need for some time along and are very respectful of that.

"His work has always been massively supportive of our family life," Emma said.

"Cam loves running so will often go for a run and a swim by himself and I love to read a book or go for a walk.

"We do make sure we plan our weeks out so that we are working around the business and his diving."

"It makes us better parents and people when we are able to recharge ourselves with some me time!"

There's no such thing as a typical day, but the family have come up with

Emergency Departments MOST Australians will avoid a hospital emergency department over the Christmas and New Year's break if they can - particularly for minor accidents or injuries, or if their child is unwell. So, what do you do if your local GP is closed and you need to see a doctor? Families of south east Melbourne will welcome the news that they do have an alternative to overcrowded emergency departments - with no out-of-pocket cost for Medicare card holders. Our Medical Home Cranbourne is open until 10pm every day of the year, including Christmas Day and New Year's Day. What's more, Our Medical Home Cranbourne operates a walk-in service, so no appointment is necessary to see one of their bulk billing GPs. More kids

being hospitalised for

dental problems A growing number of Victorian children are requiring hospitalisation to treat preventable dental problems, new data shows. More than 2900 children aged 0-17 years required a general anaesthetic to have more than 10,194 teeth extracted as well as thousands of fillings in 2017/18. This included over 2200 children aged 0-9 years, a figure 13 per cent higher than the 12 months previous, and 39 per cent higher than in 2013/14. The alarming data was obtained by the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (ADAVB) under Freedom of Information laws. ADAVB President and public dentist Dr Kevin Morris said the statistics were deeply concerning. "Children aged 0-9 age years fared the worst, making up the majority (76 per cent) of cases, and accounting for an average of four teeth extracted per child," he said. "Some children as young as 2-3 years old are having all their baby

teeth removed, leaving them without any teeth for years before their adult teeth come through." Dr Morris said baby teeth were very important as they enabled children to chew food and speak properly, and reserved spaces in gum tissue for future adult teeth. "You can only imagine the devastating impact these extractions have on their health and nutrition, and their social and emotional well-being," he said. Tooth decay is entirely preventable, with excess added sugar consumption a major contributing factor. Regular and early dental appointments are also important to help prevent dental disease. "We know that if children are being seen more often by a dentist then these problems can be addressed earlier and even prevented through supporting families with healthy messages," Dr Morris said. More than 2.5 million Victorians are eligible for public dental care, but less than 400,000 receive treatment each year.

A trusted and elite orthodontics practice ELITE Orthodontics, in Narre Warren South, offers a full range of orthodontic services for both children and adults. In fact, Elite Orthodontics even offers a family discount - so if you need to book the kids in, why not make an appointment for yourself as well to see how you can achieve the smile you've always wanted. Traditional metal braces, clear/ invisible braces and Invisalign treatments are all available with no referral needed. Committed to providing patients with a high level of specialist care from the moment they walk in the door, the team also ensures that patients are provided with step by step oral hygiene instructions once braces are placed, to ensure the teeth and mouth stay healthy throughout the process.

Education

Preparing your child for primary school By Melissa Grant

Tips for the first day

STARTING school is a momentous occasion in a child's life. It's a major milestone for children and their parents, and one that's filled with a mix of emotions. To help make the transition as smooth as possible, there are many things mums and dads can do to prepare their child. Emeritus Professor Bob Perry is an education expert in transitions, having developed a guide featuring multiple case studies experienced by parents, teachers and kids during the transition to school. Prof Perry says while beginning primary school can be a challenge, most children find it enjoyable."Children of that age want to grow up - they see excitement in growing up and they want school to be different. So we shouldn't worry that it is different as the kids want it that way," he explains. The move from kindergarten to primary school, he says, is all more about a child's social and emotional development, rather than academic. Here, Prof Perry shares his top tips to help a child prepare for primary school. TALK: Start talking to your children about school. This includes talking about the school itself, what it was like when you went to school, what's changed since you went to school and what it will be like for your child to go to school. Ask your child about what's concerning them and what are they looking forward to? Like most people, children will bottle things up unless they are specifically asked about them. For example, the child may be particularly worried about the playground sometimes playgrounds can be a bit daunting. MANAGING EXPECTATIONS: The key is being honest, even if you didn't particularly like school. Parents can talk about some of the positive things that did happen when they were at school. Be honest about it, but make sure you know what will happen when they go to school. For example, I know some parents who talk about children lining up before going into classroom - this doesn't happen at some schools anymore. If child sees that doesn't happen then the parent loses some credibility with the child. It's important for parents to talk to the principal or teacher about what happens in that particular school. Another thing is many children wish they'd known before their first day is that everyone wears a school uniform. We often make a big deal about getting

their uniform but forget to tell them everyone will be dressed the same. LUNCH BOXES: Buy a lunch box and check your child can open it. There seems to be a tendency to buy the latest superhero lunchbox or whatever the trend is, but the critical thing is that your child can actually open it. Talk to your child about having lunch at school and be sure to tell them that you don't eat everything at once! Also make sure you can pack lunches that don't require wrap or foil, so that the kids don't have trouble unwrapping their food. TOILETS: Going to public toilets is critical for both boys and girls. School toilets are different to home toilets and preschool toilets. While school toilets have improved a great deal, they aren't as sparkling clean as the toilet at home or at kindy. And, for the first time, kids will have to make a choice about whether they go to the boys toilets or girls toilets - they need to know about that. For boys it is important they know that there are different ways of going to toilet other than standing over a bowl. These are the practical things.

important to take your child with you as you want them to feel a sense of belonging. You need to know the teacher, so you don't have to get on the phone and start introducing yourself if there's a problem. AFTER SCHOOL CARE: This is something that tends to be forgotten. After school care is another transition that can be challenging. Certainly at prep level you go there to play, but you have to get there. For some kids that means walking across the playground, but for others it will involve getting a bus. The child needs to be prepared for that. They need to go and visit the after school care place. Sometimes it's not a bad idea for kids to go to vacation care for a couple of days to get used to that transition. However this only works if the actual after school place they will be going to offers vacation care.

PLAYGROUND PRACTICE: Take your child to big public spaces. Take them to the park and let them play on the playground equipment. Schools have playgrounds that are bigger than they are used to with more people in them and less adults per child. The children need to have experience around these things. While you are there take them to the toilet!

SPECIAL NEEDS: Often with children who have special needs, there will have been a very extensive transition to school program. This is generally instigated by the parent or kindy teacher. Providing the child is identified as having special needs, there is usually meetings between school representatives, principals, the teacher, kindy teacher and therapists of various sorts. They work out an individual plan for these children. Parents need to make sure this happens. If they know child has additional needs, the school has to be aware about it before they can do anything about it.

MEET AND GREET: Before the school year begins, every parent should take their child to the school to meet the principal and the potential teacher. It's

WHAT TO DO AT HOME: Don't organise a big party to celebrate starting school in first week. Your child will be too tired - it's a big change. Like many people,

■ Make sure your child knows who will take them to school and pick them up on the first day ■ Help your child to organise their clothes, hat, shoes and socks the night before ■ Help your child to pack their school bag with a snack, drink, lunch and a hat ■ Place a spare pair of underpants and a change of clothes in a plastic bag. Let your child know these clothes are in their bag in case of any accidents at school ■ Put sunscreen on your child in the morning if it's needed ■ Show your child where you will meet them at the end of the school day ■ At the end of the day talk to your child about what happened at school ■ Source: Department of Education and Training Victoria

kids are nott necessarily be kid il going i tto b ready to talk about their day as soon as they walk in the door or get in the car. Sometimes there needs to be tricks played to get the kids talking. Sometimes it's worth parents just talking with teacher at end of the day and asking them how things are going. At least that gives the parent a way in by saying 'Ms So and So said you enjoyed doing such and such today, would you like doing more of that at home?' It's all about communicating when you know more about what's going on. Sometimes the child won't want to talk and that's OK. However, if they spend the first six months not wanting to talk you may want to have a yarn to the teacher about it. WHAT IF MY CHILD COMES HOME UPSET: Before your child comes home upset, you need to know the teacher so you don't have to get on the phone and start introducing yourself. You want to get straight down to the business and say 'we have a problem'. It is a problem that everyone - the teacher, parent, school and child will have to work out together. It's possible your child will come home and throw their bag down and say 'I'm not going back there' because of an incident. The parent needs to get straight onto the teacher. The big problem is if a parent tries to solve problem themselves as they only know part of the story.

Making the move to high school BEGINNING high school is another major milestone in a child's educational journey.

they were allowed to do and what they weren't allowed to do, and so on. But they want to boundaries."

Emeritus Professor Bob Perry says this transition is much the same as the move from kindergarten to prep, with the only main difference being that the child is more independent.

"I've done work around both transitions, and all the children said the most important thing was to have friends and to know what was going to happen.

Prof Perry says older children tend to be a bit more focused on academic issues and can have qualms about having multiple teachers.

"The critical thing about transitions in general are relationships. That is,

"Usually kids at both levels want to know what is going to happen - what

"They can be a bit concerned about going from one teacher to a number of teachers, and finding their way around

the school between periods. "However, these days many primary schools give the experience of multiple teachers. But most grade six students are worried about the size of the place as the high school will be bigger than the primary school. "Older kids will also talk about things like drugs as concerns as they have, mainly it's the sort of same deal." SUMMER 2018/2019 31

THERE are many pleasures that reward being a school principal. In his 29 years as founding principal of Berwick Lodge Primary School, Henry Grossek has been fortunate to have enjoyed countless such occasions. Each year, the school's graduation celebration is a clear highlight. "That's the time when I experience that unquantifiable satisfaction of congratulating our departing Year 6 students on their successes at our primary school, seeing them grow up into increasingly independent and confident young people, ready for the next chapter in their journey to adulthood." Welcoming Prep students during November, with the Prep transition program in full swing, is a sheer delight. "There's very little that could be more rewarding for teachers and school principals than to witness the growth and development of children into adulthood," Mr Grossek said. "There's so much more - every Monday morning at our school assembly, children speak of all the wonderful achievements that they and their colleagues have enjoyed in the week before." Mr Grossek said there has been many outstanding achievements by students over the years - ranging from robotics to the arts to community work and citizenship. "Right now we are chuffed to have been acknowledged for our endeavours in the natural environment and learning. "We are so proud to have been awarded the top Victorian Schools Garden Award, the Kevin Heinze Perpetual School Garden Award for 2018." Why not come and enjoy?"

While literacy and numeracy are a focus, the school's academic programs are enhanced by authentic learning experiences such as gardening, sports, science, digital technologies, social studies, Auslan, student leadership activities and interest-based clubs. The Performing Arts program is extremely popular and provides numerous opportunities to invite the community into the school and for students to go out into the community. There are also two school concerts each year which are well attended by students' families. Teaching and learning in Performing Arts is a multi-sensory, social, wholechild focused experience for students. This kind of learning can greatly improve students' ability to achieve within and outside of the classroom. The number of students learning musical instruments and joining the school Choir and Ukulele Club is also on the rise. The school now has such a confident group of performers that they regularly perform for elderly residents and children in early learning centres. "This enables students to experience not only the excitement of performing but also the joy of brightening up other people's day," Parent and Community Liaison Debbie Dodd said. The Choir and Ukulele Club also gives students the excitement of performing and allows children to grow in confidence.

Taking the stress out of

early learning There are some incredible benefits to childcare or kinder, but choosing the right one can be daunting.

signs of wanting to socialise with others, such as your child readily approaches or talks to other children or adults during visits to the park, then that is a sign they are ready for preschool. Early signs of resilience such as the ability to independently get up from a fall and continue playing also indicate readiness for kindergarten along with the ability to share with siblings, and take turns. What are some of the known benefits to early learning? David Worland, CEO Early Learning Association Australia.

There is overwhelming evidence of the positive outcomes of two years of preschool.

WHEN the time approaches, it can be stressful for parents returning to work and looking for childcare options for their young child. For some of us, childcare is a necessity.

For children, two years of quality early learning can assist those who are behind in their learning to catch up to their peers and start school ready together. Also, children who have attended regular, quality early learning are more likely to go on to further education, to be employed, to earn more and have improved health outcomes.

While for others, there's no deadline. Either way, making the right choice and handing over your child to an educator or choosing the right preschool isn't easy. That's why Danielle Galvin spoke to David Worland, CEO of the Early Learning Association of Australia, to get some practical tips for parents to make the transition as smooth as possible and how to choose the right place to nurture your child's development and learning. What are some of the signs parents should look out for which could indicate their child might be ready for more, i.e. being bored or acting up at home? As a parent, there a number of signs that will tell you that your child is ready for kindergarten. They may show signs of boredom at home or start to develop specific interests in different areas. Observe if your child can sit and remain engaged with an activity for reasonable periods of time. If your child is showing

There are also benefits for families, communities and the nation including: ■ More parents enter the workforce, increasing Australia's productivity. ■ Improvement to Australia's declining school performance in international benchmark testing. ■ The national costs of education, justice and health are reduced resulting in overall savings. ■ Increased net GDP for Australia of up to $30 billion cumulative to 2050 (Price Waterhouse Coopers, 2014).

brain is developed before the age of 5. Research highlights that the two years before school are optimal for learning essential skills for life. In their 2016 report entitled Preschool - Two Years are Better Than One: Developing a universal preschool program for Australian 3 year-olds - evidence, policy and implementation, the Mitchell Institute's Stacey Fox and Myra Geddes noted that between the ages of three and five years, foundation skills critical for learning are established. Ages three to five years are considered the sweet spot for reducing disadvantage and enhancing readiness for school, setting a child up for life. What are some basic tips for parents, to know how to choose the right childcare centre? It can be a difficult, overwhelming decision! Start with some research about centres in your local area. Jump online and check out centre websites, look for statements about their learning philosophy or approach. Go to the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority website www. acecqa.gov.au and click on the link (from the home page) to the National Registers where you can search on a centre to find some key details about its service offerings and National Quality Standard Ratings. Then organise to visit the centre, talk to the staff and during your visit take note of how staff interact with the children. Does it matter how many days a child attends?

Is there an age at which a child should be attending childcare or kindergarten? Is there research that shows a specific age is beneficial or does it differ from child to child?

Any time spent in quality early learning is beneficial but research generally points to 15 hours a week as being the minimum recommended period.

The science behind brain development shows that 90% of a child's

Are there any questions that a parent should definitely ask, when doing a

tour of a pre-school, childcare, kindergarten? Make sure you ask about fees and request services to explain to you how the Child Care Subsidy works. Ask the service about how they communicate with parents i.e. some might have a book where they note the day's activities and messages while others might use an online portal platform like Storypark. Ask about place availability, wait lists and commencement dates. If your child has any additional physical or intellectual needs then be sure to ask the service how they will cater for those needs. It's really important too to understand the services education and care philosophy. Ask them about their performance against the National Quality Standards. What are some basic tips for easing your child into a childcare environment? Try to regularly talk to your child about going to kindergarten or childcare and use a positive tone - talk about making new friends, the great play equipment and how exciting it will be. Ask your child how they are feeling about it and when the day arrives, be organised by having your child's bag ready with lunch packed (if required as some services provide meals), sunhat etc. It's also important to support your child with conversations about their learning and friendship experiences. Any other tips for parents? As well as preparing your child, prepare yourself for a time of change by focusing on the positives for your child and family. Kindergarten and childcare is a major first step toward independence for your child and also opens up opportunities for parents such as returning to work, study, or taking on other interests.

Education to have a communal piano for the students to openly use, on their own, and with their friends. Therefore the idea of a 'yard piano' was born."

Hillcrest WELCOMES yard piano

Students test out the new yard piano at Hillcrest.

ONE day in 2003, an English student called Doug Pearman couldn't get his newly purchased second hand piano into his home in Sheffield. He was left with no other option but to leave it out on the street. As an experiment, he left a sign on the piano, encouraging passers-by to play. This was the start of an international craze where pianos are decorated and placed in public areas all over the

world, and more recently adorned with the "Play Me, I'm Yours" slogan. Street pianos have become a wonderful source of creativity, community connection and inspiration for busy places such as hall foyers, city streets, train stations and airport waiting areas. They provide an opportunity for the performing and creative arts to be enjoyed and shared by all members of the community, regardless of ability.

BERWICK GRAMMAR CENTRAL to the Growing Good Man Project at Berwick Grammar School is a renewed emphasis on the development of Learning Literacies.

whole school approach to the development of literacy was an essential part of building the school and improving VCE results.

This is gaining expression in various forms, importantly in the school's CARE programs which have a specific focus on equipping young men with the capacity to express themselves and their concerns through emotional literacy.

"I have been extremely impressed with the way our boys have embraced reading as a key factor in improving their own academic performance," Dr Middleton said.

However, one approach that has been most heartening has been the manner in which boys and staff have adopted the DEAR program every Friday.

When Hillcrest Secondary music coordinator Kara-Lee Walker came across the piano concept, she decided it would be wonderful to replicate it in the schoolyard. "Although many students often come to the Performing Arts Theatre to practice at lunchtimes, often this experience is limited to the same group," she explained. "All people have some level of appreciation for music, therefore I decided it would be a great opportunity man.' Reading fills our minds and inspires us to keep reading and learning." Dr Middleton urges parents engage with their boys by asking them what they are reading, reading together and talking about what they're reading. "Maybe even institute a DEAR program at home," he said. "Put down those iPhones and iPads

Street pianos are characterised by their colourful artwork. Art Teacher Ysabelle Ruddle was more than willing to coordinate the artwork on the yard piano, which everyone agreed should reflect aspects of the Hillcrest community. The result was a montage of everything 'Hillcrest' such as the semirural property including wetlands, housing development, horses and the biblical foundation with the scripture "make a joyful noise to the Lord" Psalm 98:4. Hillcrest students say the yard piano is an inspiring addition to the school. "The yard piano is a great new addition to this school and improving musical talent in all students at this school," Mitchell Gatehouse said. Fellow student Sean Carruthers said: "I'd say it's a nice feature to the school and definitely adds more colour to the school. It will hopefully inspire other people to play piano and will allow for new activities around the schoolyard." The school thanks students who assisted with the piano's paintwork and those who performed for the official opening ceremony on Monday 8 October. and turn the TV or YouTube off. With four magical worlds to explore, Gumbuya World delivers the ultimate family holiday in a single day. And all in one great value ticket! Gumbuya's state-of-the-art water park Oasis Springs is the perfect way to cool down as the thermometer rises. Take the plunge on epic water slides, get deliriously drenched on the aquatic jungle gym Typhoon Island, or soak up the rays on a relaxing drift along the 180 metre Lazy River. With the water heated to a perfect 26 degrees, every day is awesome aquatic fun. Or you can journey into the beautiful natural wilderness to meet all kinds of amazing animals on the Wildlife Trail. More than 50 species call Gumbuya World home - from kangaroos, koalas and dingoes to the mind-boggling creepy-crawlies who dwell in the Critter Cave. For an unforgettable experience, why not book an Animal Close Encounter to go inside the enclosures and get one-on-one with these incredible creatures. Anyone game to pat a python? There are also heaps of awesome rides for thrill-seekers young and old to spin out on at Oz Adventure and Outback Explorers. Whether you're flying sky-high on the Giant Tree Swing, enjoying the bumper car chaos of the Desert Derby or delighting in Berry Twirl (a super-sweet spin on everyone's favourite Teacups ride), there's fun to suit every speed. www.caseycardiniakids.com.au

And if you think Gumbuya World is magical by day, you should see it after dark! On Friday 14 December, you can join the festivities at Gumbuya World's hit pool party under the stars, Oasis Nights. Chill out with a relaxing twilight session to wind down your week while the kids go wild on the water slides and explore the wonders of Oasis Springs in the golden sunset. There's a licensed bar, delicious dinner options and live entertainment to help you groove through the night. With so much to do, there's no end to the family fun on offer at Gumbuya World. reality bites

What I wish I knew before having a baby Jade Zahra with husband Kain, daughter Trew and son Balin. Picture: Belmen Photography

"It's not talked about enough," she said. "I didn't recognise the symptoms and I'm actually a midwife.

By Melissa Grant IN the months after having her first child, Jade Zahra would go to the effort of putting on a full face of makeup even if she didn't plan to leave the house. Looking back, Jade realises applying foundation and lipstick was her putting on a facade to give the impression she was coping. The truth was that she cried everyday for six months following the birth of her daughter in January 2014 and had developed a strong fear of dying. She had a sense of hyper-vigilance and never wanted to let her newborn out of her sight - even to have a shower or go to the toilet. "I knew I was experiencing something, but didn't identify it was beyond the normal new parent emotions," Jade explained. "At about about six months it was like a cloud lifted - I started having more good days than bad. The real obvious change in me made me realise

Jael By Melissa Grant JAEL Wena was born to perform - and has just sung for a worldwide television audience in the millions. The Melbourne schoolgirl represented Australia at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, a renowned event with competitors from 20 countries aged between 9 and 14. Jael, who wrote her first song before she started school, screamed with excitement when she learned she'd been chosen to perform in the competition in Belarus. "I couldn't believe it," the 12-year-old said. "Me and my family were screaming because we were so excited." 44 SUMMER 2018/2019

something was definitely wrong." A story about a baby in the media was actually what prompted Jade to get help. The story made her become emotional and extremely anxious, so she phoned the national hotline for Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia (PANDA), an organisation which supports parents suffering from antenatal and postnatal anxiety, depression or psychosis. "When I finally did pick up the phone and call them it was a very personalised approached," Jade said. "They were amazing. They talked to me for an hour. They talked to me about safety, confidence and gave me strategies on calming myself in that particular moment. "They also followed up my call by sending me an email listing resources in my local area." Not long after that phone call, Jade signed up to be a community champion for PANDA to help spread the word about perinatal anxiety.

"At the time when I was experiencing what I was experiencing I wasn't the clinical case of depression and was caring for the baby well." When Jade had her son in 2015, it became even more obvious she had experienced perinatal anxiety as she didn't suffer any of the symptoms she did after having her first. And, having spoken to a counsellor at PANDA, she was more aware of what symptoms to look out for and how to address them. It's vital information she wish she'd known before becoming a mum - and that's why she's passionate about spreading the word about PANDA. "There were people at the time who said to me 'do you have postnatal depression?' and I looked at them stupid like 'no, I'm not depressed'," she said. "I wish I had known that there was a difference between perinatal anxiety and perinatal depression - you can have one or you can have both." The theme of this year's PANDA Week, held in November, was 'I Wish I Knew' - a theme which resonates deeply

with Jade as she went undiagnosed because there was so much she didn't know about perinatal anxiety. Raising awareness about perinatal anxiety and depression is a major part of PANDA's work - they want parents to recognise the signs so they can get support. Perinatal anxiety and depression is common, affecting one in five new or expecting mums and one in 10 new or expecting dads. Signs and symptoms of perinatal depression and anxiety vary but may include the following: Feeling sad, low, or crying for no obvious reason; persistent worry often focused on fears for the health or wellbeing of the baby; being nervous, 'on edge', or panicky; being easily annoyed or irritated; withdrawing from friends and family; abrupt mood swings; and thoughts of death, suicide or harming the baby. For more information, visit www. panda.org.au If you need help, call the PANDA hotline (Mon to Fri, 9am - 7.30pm AEST) on 1300 726 306. a super talent Jael performed a song called Ch Champion, a tune she describes as po positive and encouraging. The oldest of four children, Jael grew up around music and was singing and wr writing her own songs at just four years of age. By age nine, she was recording songs in the studio owned by her father, a talented musician who emigrated from the Congo nearly two decades ago. "My dad plays piano - he's been teaching me a bit," she said. "He also has his own studio - he records a lot of songs, people come to his studio and they would have a song written and he would produce the song." Jael - who has been described as having an 'extraordinary voice' - says Tori Kelly and Guy Sebastian are her favourite artists but loves performing a wide variety of genres. She is a master school student at the David Jaanz School of Singing in South Melbourne and is taught by the celebrity singing coach himself.

Before being selected to perform at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018 (JESC), Jael won the top award at the Fast Track Talent Showcase three years in a row. Director of Blink TV and Australia's Head of Delegation for Eurovision, Paul Clarke said Jael's voice was a showstopper. "When we first heard Jael's voice it literally stopped the office - how can someone so young have such a brilliant and mature voice? That happens a lot with the greats, and Jael is definitely capable of really great things," he said. The Junior Eurovision Song Contest was held at Minsk Arena on November 26 as this magazine went to press. Jael's parents travelled with her to Belarus, while her brother and sisters watched the competition on ABC ME. To find out how Jael fared, head to www.caseycardiniakids.com.au Australia's 2018 Junior Eurovision Song Contest representative Jael Wena. www.caseycardiniakids.com.au

reality bites Casey and District Multiple Birth Association vice president Tara Keegel and her twins Lucas and Jett. Picture: Stewart Chambers

SUPPORT FOR

multiple birth families

By Melissa Grant PARENTING twins or triplets (or more) is vastly different than raising a single child. Just ask Pakenham mum Tara Keegel. Tara and husband Daniel have an seven-year-old son, Declan, plus five-year-old twin boys Jett and Lucas. Tara is also the vice president of the Casey and District Multiple Birth Association (CDMBA), a group which provides vital support to parents who welcome more than one child into the world at once. "It's very different raising a singleton compared to multiples," Tara explained. "There are lots of things with multiples like jealousy and sleep issues that you have to deal with. "It's good for parents to be able to speak to other parents in the same boat, parents who have been there and done that. "It's that struggle and knowing it's OK to feel that you might not be doing it right." Tara has been on the CDMBA committee since Jett and Lucas were eight months old. In that time, she has seen the struggles parents of multiples face including a lack of support, settling issues and extreme sibling rivalry. www.caseycardiniakids.com.au

"Sibling rivalry is massive, but twin rivalry and jealousy has its own level," she said. The risk of prematurity and health problems are also higher in multiple births, and parents can be at greater risk of developing postnatal depression. Tara, whose twins were born at 29 weeks, also said the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) journey was quite challenging. She said parents involved in the association loved the support and opportunity to make new friends. "People with twins can often feel like they don't have the time to get out and meet people. "We have family-friendly events that allow parents to get out and meet others. "The big thing families find is by having multiples around them their kids aren't seen as 'the twins'. They can be themselves." The association runs three weekly playgroups at Chisholm TAFE where early education students lend helping a hand so mums can enjoy a hot coffee.

On top of that, the association has a private Facebook group where members can get support and distributes a monthly newsletter with parenting tips. There are currently 129 families who are members of the CDMBA, which covers a huge area from Dandenong to Phillip Island to Gippsland. Most families have twins, however there are 10 sets of triplets involved with the association. The group, which is affiliated with the Australian Multiple Birth Association, has been supporting families for the past 31 years - and it just keeps growing. "The growing population of multiples out this way is just unbelievable and it's only going to get bigger," Tara said. Contrary to popular belief, this isn't necessarily due to more people accessing fertility treatment. "The biggest thing parents of multiples get asked all the time is 'were they IVF'?" Tara said.

There is also a Young Bubs Playgroup for parents of children who haven't started walking yet.

"There are actually a lot of twins who were conceived naturally and not through IVF."

The association hosts regular information sessions on topics such as sleep, settling and school preparation that are specifically tailored for multiple birth parents.

Another misconception, according to Tara, is that having twins equals twice the trouble. "Yes having multiple births increases your workload, but a lot of people say SUMMER 2018/2019 45

it's double the trouble," she said. "We always say instead of double the trouble, it's double the love." Natasha

having a ball on screen Berwick teen Natasha Pearson stars in Mustangs FC, a comedy drama which will soon air its second season on ABC ME.

By Melissa Grant NATASHA Pearson is kicking goals in her pursuit of a career in the performing arts.

It's the first television role for Natasha, who has featured in a string of ameatuer theatre productions. The St Margaret's School student said she was surprised by how seamless the transition was from stage to screen.

The Berwick teen stars in Mustangs FC, a television show on ABC ME that follows the friendships, challenges and triumphs of an all-girls soccer team.

"I thought going into it would be very daunting and I was quite scared going into season 1, not having done any acting work before," she said.

Natasha plays Michaela who is a player with the Wildcats, the Mustangs' biggest rivals.

"But it was so amazing on set - I've made so many friends. "It doesn't feel like work at all."

And baby..

Days on set are generally long for Natasha, with filming beginning just after 5am on location (usually in Melbourne's Bayside area) and wrapping up at 5.30pm.

in both acting and musical theatre.

During filming Natasha is generally on set three days a week, which means the Year 11 student has to work hard to juggle her acting work with VCE studies.

The next big role for Natasha is in Les Miserables, a production presented by the Young Australian Broadway Chorus at the National Theatre in January.

She knows the juggle may get even more difficult next year but plans to keep acting.

Natasha would love to study performing arts once she finishes secondary school, but is keeping an open mind.

"I'm hoping I can still do acting and what I love during Year 12 because I don't want to give it up, but I know I have to make sacrifices," she said. Being on Mustangs FC has been an extraordinary experience for Natasha, who has studied theatre, dance and singing through Stage School Australia's Young Australian Broadway Chorus for about 10 years.

Now she battles the balance between having an eight-year-old with attitude and a one-year-old who takes any nappy-free opportunity to relieve himself wherever he likes.

She has spent the last decade bearing children.

"It's really nice to have a big family historically that's what people did and I just love it."

And has just given birth to her six child, a son, Ares. And after having that many children it's no surprise she has a few stories to tell. Her oldest child, eight-year-old daughter Alyssandra and third child, son Evangelos share a birthday - three years apart.

"My dad was losing it, he's from Sudan and was saying that even when he was born he got delivered in a hospital," she laughs.

It's something Alyssandra isn't too pleased about but Evangelos thinks it's wonderful and is already planning all the parties they can share.

"So we sent him upstairs to make sure none of the other kids woke up and came downstairs."

By the time Natalie's parents arrived the ambulance was directing her husband to warm towels in preparation for a home birth. 46 SUMMER 2018/2019

Natalie and her husband stopped trying after baby number four, and decided to let it happen.

"If I was younger I'd probably keep having kids, they are beautiful and crazy," she said.

It's a feeling mum of six Natalie Batsakis knows all too well.

"I thought I can't go anywhere now."

"But once we got to four, I thought it's not that stressful - I've got things under control."

She realised she was pregnant with Ares in the week leading up to her 40th birthday.

IN a day and age when the average Aussie family boasts two children and a dog - a family of eight turns heads.

"I thought I had heaps of time - I called my parents and told them I was having contractions and I went downstairs to put my thongs on and get read and felt the urge to push," she said.

The second season of Mustangs FC will soon air on ABC Me.

The 17-year-old says Whelan Browne is living her dream of having a career

By Melissa Meehan

Three-year-old Philip, number four, was born on the bathroom floor at home 10 minutes after the ambulance arrived.

"I'm going to send my auditions of to NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) and VCA (Victorian College of the Arts) but who knows - I could be working, who knows. It's all a bit unknown," Natasha said.

Natasha has even got to meet her idol Christie Whelan Browne, who plays her mum in the comedy drama.

Baby Ares with Emmanuelle (left) and Alyssandra.

makes six

"I would love to do musical theatre as a career, but I also love acting as well so it would be good to do both," she said.

Within 10 minutes of the ambulance arriving Philip was born. "It was pretty scary actually, they don't have all the monitors like they do in the hospital and when I didn't hear him cry at the start I just panicked, but everything was OK." Natalie says that by baby number four, it isn't a bad thing to go into labour at home. "It's not like it's your first baby and you don't know what you are doing," she said. "That said, I think that was too quick

- it's a lot of stress on the body." And Ares was also keen to meet his brothers and sisters, bursting into the world just 20 minutes after Natalie arrived at hospital.

Who is who: Alyssandra aged 8 Emmanuelle aged 7 Evangelos aged 5 Philip aged 3; and Elysion aged 1. Ares, newborn

6

"My obstetrician reminded me that women who have birthed so many children can go from 1cm-10cm in 2-3 strong contractions," she said. "Thankfully we made it and baby Ares arrived safely and is healthy and well." Having a large family was always on the cards for Natalie who was one of two kids. She always thought two wasn't enough growing up and knew she would have at least three kids. "But I don't like odd numbers, so four seemed like a good number," she said.

Alexia an early surprise

A Alexia Hanna recovering in hospital shortly after her early arrival.

By Melissa Grant

had ruptured, so she was taken to Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

WHEN Lisa Hanna was pregnant with daughter Alexia, she joined a Facebook group for mums due in the same month.

Lisa's obstetrician met her at the hospital, where she was started on some steroids as doctors were convinced she would deliver her baby by the weekend.

Before long, Lisa noticed many women in the group were going into labour early - one gave birth at 23 weeks and six days.

Mina booked a flight to Sydney for 6am the following day.

from what she had read on the pregnancy group she had joined on Facebook. "I think I jinxed myself," she said. "I was on a Facebook group for babies being born in November. My daughter was the 19th premmie born in that group.

Working at a travel doctor clinic, Lisa often mentioned to the nurses at her workplace how many women on the Facebook group were having premature births, not thinking she would follow suit.

However, the couple's daughter Alexia - was born at 3.34am via an emergency c-section, weighing 1.89kg.

"The earliest was born at 23 weeks and 6 days. I keep telling my midwife all these women were having premmies!"

"Until he (the obstetrician) said 'she's out she's fine', that's when I took my next breath," Lisa said.

Lisa, who now lives in Berwick, said she had no idea what having a premature baby entailed.

Like many first time mums, Lisa thought she would go over her due date and told husband Mina not to worry about leaving her in Sydney to begin a new job in their hometown of Melbourne.

"I didn't get to hold her. The nurses whisked her away."

"The physical and mental strain on a parent - it's a full-time job," she said.

After a delayed flight and bad traffic, Mina arrived at 10am.

"You're going back to the hospital everyday . For three weeks I was there from 8am to 6pm everyday.

"I said to him 'I'll probably go over so don't stress," she said. "He started in the first week of October, on a Monday. That Wednesday I come home from work and I didn't feel right." When she began bleeding, Lisa called an ambulance. At 34 weeks' pregnant her placenta www.caseycardiniakids.com.au

"He was the first to see her. He spent a bit of time with her," Lisa said. "When I was able enough they put me in a wheelchair and they took me to see her. "It was a bit traumatising ... they (premature babies) have monitors on, oxygen on and a little beanie." Before Alexia's birth, Lisa didn't know much about premature babies apart

"You have to be there for your kid even though you can't do much." While Alexia was still in hospital, Lisa discovered the Life's Little Treasures Foundation, a charity dedicated to supporting the families of babies born sick or prior to 37 weeks gestation. The charity holds an annual Walk for Prems each October, with families taking part to support the 48,000

premature or sick babies born in Australia every year. "We were still in hospital, so I thought I want to do it (the walk) next year," Lisa said. "It (premature birth) is a scary situation no matter how good the outcome is." Alexia celebrated her 1st birthday on 12 October and is meeting all her milestones. "You don't know she's a premmie baby - she just looks a bit smaller," Lisa said. "She's a happy baby. She's already naughty. She's catching up really well and is developmentally fine." Lisa is so grateful for the support she received and wants to pay it forward to other parents who find themselves in a similar - and sometimes worse situation. She volunteers for Life's Little Treasures Foundation and takes part in the annual walk, which takes place in multiple locations in October each year. This year the Hannas raised $1115 for the walk, which they did at Albert Park Lake on 28 October. SUMMER 2018/2019 47

Trying for a baby, A ROLLERCOASTER RIDE By Melissa Grant IT'S Okay To Feel Crazy Trying to Have a Baby. This is certainly an apt title for Dalya Shaw's debut book, which recounts her rollercoaster journey of trying to conceive. Predominantly written in diary form, the book is a raw account of Dalya's eight-year in vitro fertilisation (IVF) journey.

It shows how the desire to have a baby can become an obsession that becomes physically, emotionally and mentally draining.

control over your happy/sad emotions. I have felt at times like I am completely losing my marbles, like I am seriously crazy," Dalya says in her book.

It's a story that many women battling infertility issues will identify with.

There are so many ups and downs in this book, and the rollercoaster ride continues even when you think it's over.

Importantly, the story shows women that they are not alone in feeling crazy while trying to have a baby. "I cannot believe the impact this IVF business has had on me. I know it's major thing we're doing here but it is still really strange to have absolutely no
