BY MICHELLE HERBISON QUEENSCLIFF’S iconic hotel is up for grabs, with its owner confirming this week the building is open to tender. Queenscliff Hotel proprietor Johann Schuetz said he wanted to sell the 1880s hotel and retire after 11 years running its accommodation and fine dining. “I’ve been in hospitality for 25 years and I wish to do other things,” he said. The establishment was formally home to popular restaurant Mietta’s and comprises 15 bedrooms with en suites, three guest lounges, a formal dining room, a conservatory restaurant and a bar. Mr Schuetz said he auctioned the hotel in 2010, attracting offers of up to $4 million, but for personal reasons decided against the sale. Kerleys Coastal Real Estate agent Neil Laws said “preliminary ads” had attracted five “reasonably strong” registrations of interest. Mr Laws said he planned to market the building as more than a hotel. “We’ve had interest from people considering looking at it as a house as well as interest from people in hospitality. Maybe a group of people will look at buying it.” Mr Laws said he planned to target all of Australia’s top chefs to suggest one build a world-class restaurant similar to Mietta’s. Mr Schuetz said after taking over the hotel 11 years ago he spent $60,000 restoring its antique furniture. “It’s a beautiful building and we’ve always had nice people staying here,” he said. The Queenscliff Hotel employs about 10 staff in winter and between 15 and 20 in the warmer months. Geelong joins CFA Fiskville cancer class action

BY NOEL MURPHY ANDREW Conlon is one of some 20 Geelong people looking to lodge a class action against the CFA over alleged exposure of its workers to cancer-causing chemicals at its Fiskville Training Centre. Mr Conlon’s late parents both worked at the centre, where workers were exposed to carcinogens, according to Professor Rob Joy’s report “Fiskville: Understanding the Past to Inform the Future”. They died in the early 1990s, his father of heart disease, his mother of bone cancer. It wasn’t until this year that Mr Conlon and his siblings began to suspect a solid link between their deaths and their jobs with the CFA. “It was always a suspicion but this obviously strengthened when we saw the long list of people we knew well who were affected,” he said. “Myself, a school mate and my two brothers and sister were exposed going to school every day. “I can’t bring back my parents but I would be very angry now if I fell ill and my wife and three children were impacted.” Legal firm Slater and Gordon’s Andrew Baker said Geelong was over-represented on a list of almost 200 people connected to the Fiskville centre who had contacted the lawyers. Mr Baker said about one-third of his Fiskville clients had been diagnosed with cancer while others had a range of complaints including respiratory illnesses or auto-immune diseases. Mr Conlon, a father of three from Point Lonsdale, grew up on a farm next to the CFA centre. His parents worked there during quiet periods on the farm. “Our father was one the pad operators who Professor Joy’s report recognised as some of those most at risk and mum worked in the kitchen,” Mr Conlan said. He said he had little doubt chemical exposure at Fiskville contributed to their deaths.

I’m happy to stand on my record and what council’s achieved over last four years.’’ He said he had no contingency career plans if he didn’t take the job again. “I’m only in it to win it,’’ he said.

BY MICHELLE HERBISON A $48 MILLION project to boost Deakin University Waurn Ponds campus student accommodation by more than 300 beds began construction this week. A spokesperson for Deakin University said the single-occupancy studio apartments would fill a “desperate” need since this year 700 students applied for the 259 available on-campus beds. Deakin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander said the new apartments would support a planned increase in student numbers to 20,000 by 2020. “The project is important for Geelong’s growth as a flourishing and vibrant university town,” she said. Member for Corangamite Darren Cheeseman said Federal Government’s $38 million contribution as part of the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) would keep rental at 20 per cent below market rates. “We know that the lack of rental properties around this part of Victoria push up the prices of accommodation to levels that are out of reach for many of our best and brightest students,” Mr Cheeseman said. Mr Cheeseman said students could live in the new apartments by 2014. “Importantly, the campus incorporates green technology including solar panels and hot water systems, vertical screens for sun control as well as cycle ways which will link to nearby shops,” he said. State Higher Education Minister Peter Hall said the accommodation would support expansion of tertiary opportunities in Geelong. Deakin’s Waurn Ponds campus would soon be home to a new $255 million Epworth teaching hospital and a $102.8 million carbon fibre research facility. “By investing more than $10 million in this project, the Coalition Government is not only acting to address local accommodation shortages for students

MORE than 590,000 Victorians have been assisted by the TAC in its 25 year history, an event marking its silver anniversary heard. The Geelong-based organisation was currently working with 44,000 clients and had paid out more than $1 billion. Former Victorian premier John Cain, instrumental in the formation of the Transport Accident Commission, said the reform had been badly needed. Mr Cain, premier from 1982 to 1990, said the accident compensation industry was in a “chaotic state” in the 1960s and 1970s. “For the first time the TAC concept recognised safety and rehabilitation as key components,” Mr Cain said. “It was taken on as a state responsibility instead of leaving it to insurers, lawyers and the courts. “My lawyer colleagues didn’t like it, but it was worth their ire.” Mr Cain said the central reform was eliminating fault from the compensation system. “It’s not perfect but it’s a great com-

promise. I am proud of the role I played in seeing the scheme work well. “The idea has now been adopted in other jurisdictions. It looks after those in need.” Assistant Treasurer Gordon RichPhillips said the TAC was instrumental in fighting the road toll, lowering it from the 705 in 1987 to its current level of 287. The event was attended by two young Victorian men among the first to receive services through the TAC. Anthony Bartl and Simon van Beest both had car accidents in 1986 as young boys and featured in a video reflecting the TAC’s history. TAC chief Janet Dore said both had overcome many challenges to lead fulfilling lives. “It’s difficult to imagine what sort of support injured Victorians would have if the TAC hadn’t been established.”

Queenscliff poll ‘disappointing’ THREE Borough of Queenscliffe candidates have expressed their disappointment at comments from Mayor Bob Merriman. Peter Russell, Greg Jones and Graham Christie are running in the election on a platform of good governance and transparency. Mr Russell said he had been “intentionally smeared” in the lead up to the October council elections by Cr Merriman. “The true facts are the exact opposite to Mr Merriman’s false accusations,” Mr Russell said. Mr Russell said the comments revolved around his record as a Moorabool Shire councillor, deputy mayor and mayor. “I left Moorabool Shire Council in 2008 at end of my council term with-

out a blemish on my record,” he said. Mr Russell said his local government public service in Moorabool Council from1998 to 2008 was of “immense pride” to him. Mr Russell said he had been accused of lying. “These are personal and unsubstantiated defamatory attacks on me. I do not lie.” Mr Russell said an Ombudsman’s Report in April 2009 into corporate governance in Moorabool Shire was unrelated to any specific councillor. “The outcome of the report was that it did not find evidence of serious wrongdoing within the shire and suggested improvements to local government practice.” Mr Russell said he proposed the resolution formally adopting the Ombudsman’s Report in October

2008. Mr Jones said he did not wish to respond directly to the comments, but the issue reflected the intrusion of bullying into Australian politics at all levels. Cr Merriman said he would rely on the Ombudsman’s Report of the factual situation in which Moorabool council was found to have difficulties with transparency and governance. “Four councillors including Mr Russell initially voted against the proposed changes and it wasn’t until three weeks before an election that they were adopted, and Mr Russell failed to hold his seat.” Mr Christie did not make any comment. Residents sign up to GRRA BY CHERIE DONNELLAN GEELONG’S new residents and ratepayers association is rapidly attracting members, according to the group’s president. Andrew Senia said he expected up to 20 new members would attend not-for-profit GRRA’s third meeting, despite starting just 14 days ago. “We had 13 new members attend our last meeting, with 13 apologies,” he said. The Independent reported two weeks ago the birth of the first-ever city-wide municipal watchdog. Mr Senia said his law firm had been inundated with membership enquiries. “It’s fantastic that so many people are looking to join. Potentially we could have 170,000 members. “We’re realistic of course about not expecting to reach that, but the more people that join, the stronger the voice we’ll have to approach local government and parliament with our issues.” GRRA’s priorities would include “scrutinising” council election candidates about any “political stances, promises about funding and their commitment to transparency within council”, Mr Senia said. The committee would “indirectly help” nonmembers with ensuring residents’ concerns were listened to and supported, he said. Mystery mayoral candidate John Smith has thrown his support behind GRRA. BY NOEL MURPHY FORGET the mayoral race, Geelong needs to focus on its new councillors and it needs to fix its city centre. That’s the campaign pitch by outspoken Brownbill ward hopeful Greg McDonald, a real estate agent with his eyes firmly fixed on the city centre portfolio. “Everyone’s focussed on the mayoral vote but the mayor is just one vote in the council and can’t achieve anything without at least six councillors voting with him,” Mr McDonald said. “It’s the councillors you need, not just the mayor, whoever he or she is. It’s the councillors who do the gruntwork.’’ Mr McDonald said he was openly appalled at the damage sustained by the city as dozens of shops pull down the shutters and exit the central activities area. He blames parking, heavy trucks and city red tape. He says commercial property valuations have plummeted, in some cases by 40 per cent, and council revenue accordingly. “But revenue previously raised from the CBD has to be picked up elsewhere,’’ he said. “And it’s the average ratepayer in Geelong who’s paying for the council inaction in fixing the CBD.’’ Mr McDonald is contesting a six-

He argues no small business wants to set up in the city centre because city shopping has become grudge shopping with parking access and costs the key issues. “It’s just a pain to come into town,’’ McDonald said. “The only reason people come into town is for a specific purpose, not to browse other shops or have a coffee with a friend they meet on the street. “The councillors responsible for the CBD don’t care because there’s no votes there.’’ McDonald wants shop-top living actively encouraged and developers assisted with car parking. He says students and professionals could breathe new life into the city but city hall needed to demonstrate some urgency on the issue. “All this needs is someone one with a passion and I want that city CBD portfolio,’’ he said. “There’s so much can be done and I’m not talking about spending ratepayers’ money. “I’m talking about making it possible for private investment to get in, profit is not a dirty word you know.’’

Cats fans snap up treasures BY NOEL MURPHY HISTORIC Cats football memorabilia is being snapped up by canny fans and collectors with a gold 1931 premiership medal recently sold at auction for $12,000. Bob Troughton’s resplendent solid gold and blue enamel VFL medal was expected to fetch between $5000 and $7500 but surprised Charles Leski Auctions when it demonstrated the hot property Cats treasures have become among traders. Gilt-edged members’ season tickets from the 1880s, rare but in poor condition, have drawn figures as high as $2700 of a base expectation of just $600. More modest bargains can be snaffled for as little as a couple of hundred dollars. Photos dated well back into the 1800s, in the preVFL/AFL days before Geelong were the Cats but a prodigious competitor with a fistful of premiership pennants to their credit. Fancy your own 100-year-old photograph of Geelong’s footballers traipsing about the Blue Mountains in NSW? Football immortal Charles Brownlow with his hands nonchalantly shoved in fob pockets and looking every bit the dapper Victorian gent? Others in the touring Cats entourage make for respectable breed of tourist, dressed in ties, jackets, derbies and casual miner caps. Could have all been yours – for just $225. GEELONG again recorded average to above average rain for September. The average across the urban area, from Lara to Waurn Ponds, was 52mm. Long-term, the average for Geelong is 49.7mm. The wettest suburb was Drumcondra (66.3mm) and the driest was Hamlyn Heights (37.4mm). For the sixth consecutive month average rainfall or above was received across Geelong. The Otways and the Bellarine Peninsula however fell below average for the first time in six months. Despite this, the water catchments are still at 96 per cent of capacity. September was 0.7 of a degree warmer than average in Geelong. Minimums were almost a degree warmer and maximums were about half a degree higher. Daily minimums averaged 8.1 degrees and maximums 17.6. Coldest overnight temperature was 3.5C recorded on the September 26 and the warmest overnight was 13.2C on the 27th. That was also the warmest day when the temperature reached 26.7C. The coldest day was the 29th, with a maximum of 12.7. There were two days of lightning and thunder on September 20 and the 28. Neither of these produced large amounts of rain

Under the weather LINDSAY SMAIL but there was one severe wind storm on the 5th, when 100kph winds struck Pt Wilson and 76kph winds rocked Geelong. Geelong had six strong-wind days with the maximum gust 78 kph on the 7th. The four days from September 5 to 8 all had maximum gusts over 60kph. Avalon recorded 30mm of rain on the 19th, causing local flash flooding in the northern suburbs. Widespread hail was recorded on the 13th, and smaller isolated hail showers were reported in other suburbs. Snow fell at Meredith and on the Otways Ridge on the 29th and Beech Forest had a white carpet about 5cm deep, later augmented by large hail and rain.

Juniors are our future, same as all sports. “We have Newcomb Secondary College and a few St Josephs students coming along. “But it’s an individual sport, so there no chance of team play like footy or cricket, apart from the doubles and quads.” Graeme said despite the individuality of competition, the social aspect of canoeing was what attracted most people. “Sure, where we get onto the water we

do compete, but off the water everyone talks to one another. “I’ve been a member of a few different sporting clubs but I’ve never seen people help each other as they do in our sport. “That’s why people love canoeing.” The club is currently organising a statewide canoe polo tournament, where solo canoeists try to whack a ball into floating nets set up on a river section. “Canoe polo is pretty demanding, and people really get stuck into it,” Graeme said. “It’s been an interesting innovation for the club.” Visit the club website at geelongcanoeclub.org.au for more information.

IF YOU see a passionate paddler out on the Barwon River at any time of day or night, chances are they belong to the Geelong Canoe Club. President Graeme Bowes said canoeists were coming and going seven days a week at all hours. The club’s base in Marnock Rd opposite Balyang Sanctuary becomes a revolving door. “Before we had the clubrooms people would just roll up with canoes on their cars, usually near the rowing clubs, and launch,” Graeme recalled. “Having our own base has made a significant difference. Our membership has built up, we have around 220 now.” The club is fortunate to have one of the best stretches of water anywhere in the state to accommodate its paddlers. “Canoeing Victoria considers Geelong as probably the number one venue,” Graeme confided. “We have everything required here: The water is fairly sheltered, we can easily set up a good course and we can book the river for major events so it is closed to other water users. “The only area we could improve a bit is in shortening the portage area, where division one and two paddlers have to get out and carry their boat to the next section before continuing.” Graeme said the Australian canoe marathon titles were held on the Barwon on a regular basis. “Most people have heard of the Murray Marathon. “It is similar, with entrants seeded according to past results. “The elite canoeists do 24 kilometres, right down to the sub-juniors who do four

A FEW days before Christmas 2011 a young woman was killed on Torquay Road after swerving to avoid black flower pots that had spilled over the edge of a trailer load not properly tied down. I drive down this road five days a week to go to work and to this very day, the flower pots are still sprawled along the median strip. There has been constant road works going on lately and when the accident occurred, the road was closed for investigations. Why weren’t these pots picked up? Do we need someone else to lose their life over the council being too lazy to clean up properly? I would like to ask why I should risk my life being side swiped by oncoming traffic when it would be so easy for the council to set up a road closure for 15 minutes to clean up the mess. I DO NOT wish to respond directly about an article on the Borough of Queenscliff elections (Independent September 28). I will deal with it through the appropriate process and under advisement, as I am certain the people of Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff do not accept such poor leadership. The community deserves better governance as this is the very foundation of a local council. Better governance hinges on transparency, accountability, stewardship of the community’s resources and assets, visionary leadership, good planning and effective implementation. There is no place for bullying at any level of government. As with the recent media regarding Allan Jones, bullying has found its way into Australian politics at all levels. It is snide, cowardly and those who use it should be denied media at every opportunity. It is not news and should be treated with disdain. Those who are unfortunately associated with such people, will surely distance themselves from such cowardice as a matter of honour and respect for the electoral process. I also believe those associated with parties or have agendas critical to our environment, must be made to declare their allegiance, so as to ensure true transparency. Suffice to say that when playing in a team, you represent your community not just your team mates. You have to stand tall together in adversity. In football, I was often the target of snipers; such cowardice by weak opponents never surprised me, however, I never took my eye off the objective for the honour of winning for my community. IN THE coming decade our communities will face more expensive energy and food, increasing economic and financial constraints and a higher probability of extreme weather events. The City of Greater Geelong has recognised these challenges and has voted to engage in a program to meet them. The program, run by the Municipal Association of Victoria and Councils and Communities in Transition (CACIT) is based on the international transition towns model now receiving widespread acceptance as a means of improving local community resilience in the face of growing global energy, economic and financial challenges. It provides councils with support in the creation of community engagement strategies and response plans including an Energy Descent Action Plan. I commend councillors for their decision to stand behind this important initiative but it needs more than just lip service. Energy descent thinking must permeate every level of local government, informing every decision from strategic planning though to service delivery. With the inevitable demise of three of our major industries, Ford, Shell and Alcoa, we will need councillors with the courage and conviction to fully implement the CACIT program. Re-localising the production of goods and services will slow the leakage of financial and social capital from our community to the globalised world. Surrender OCTOBER’S Community Safety Month this year provides Victorians with an opportunity to hand in any unwanted or illegal firearms and weapons without fear of prosecution. Over the next two months as part of a state-wide amnesty, Victoria Police is urging members of the public to voluntarily surrender firearms, knives and any other weapons.No questions asked – we just want them off our streets. In past amnesties we’ve seen machetes, swords, handguns and air rifles handed in. And we’ve seen cases of items being found in back sheds that are no longer needed but which could pose a threat in the wrong hands – like antique firearms. Victorians have until 30 November to present to police any illegal or unwanted weapons and firearms for them to be destroyed. People are encouraged to phone their local police station before bringing items in. All weapons must be wrapped in paper, plastic or cloth and transported to a police station in a safe and secure manner. This is about giving people the opportunity to make the right choice and hand them in, no questions asked, or face the prospect of harsh penalties – up to two years imprisonment for carrying weapons, or up to 10 years for firearms offences. Privacy lock ANOTHER council election and another opportunity for that outfit the Committee for Geelong to get up to its old shenanigans – lest anyone ever forget the Cash for Councillors affair which led to the conviction of David Saunderson for breaches of the Local Government Act. While the Chairman of the Committee has sought to distance himself from the passing on of private information to the Committee’s preferred candidate Ms Uzelac, Executive Director Peter Dorling has been almost shameless in his admission of guilt. I ask the members of the executive of the committee, the broader committee and the people of Geelong: Just when are we going to see some accountability from this outfit? Members of the committee give their information in good faith to the committee administration for a single purpose. When that information is used for other purposes, they have every right to be very angry indeed. When the committee fails to act against the leaker, well they should be furious. Impolite parliament I HAVE at last weaned myself off from watching our federal parliament, in particular the House of Representatives. Peter Slipper was not good as a Speaker but he was far better in the chair than the current one – Anna Burke. Constant talk, a barrage of noise from both sides and constant attempts at belittling the opposition leader seems to be the order of the day, with nil questions answered; the Speaker is ignored when she tries to bring government ministers back to the question and sadly political bias has become routine in the running of question time. It is sad to see our parliament go down such an impolite track: Impolite to us, the Australian people who pay them to govern us competently and to set standards that should enable us to face the world. I dislike the member who sits so prominently on the government bench who constantly interjects with shame! shame! And she is not the only one. Fancy the treasurer standing up in parliament and calling the opposition leader a thug! Even though he has been told not to do so, Mr Swan continues to call Joe Hockey Sloppy Joe. Festival circuit breakthrough BY CHERIE DONNELLAN GEELONG singer-songwriter Sophy Katos compares her music career to the Anglesea Music Festival: “Growing, developing and gaining fans”. The 24 year-old soloist said she was “really excited to break into the festival circuit” and to be a part of a blossoming local festival. “Anglesea Music Festival has that great balance of local musicians and fantastic well-known acts,” Katos told the Independent. “To be a part of that and to be able to play my music in front of such a big audience is great.” Katos dubbed her music “indie pop with elements of soul and rock” and said she loved to be a different “character” on stage. “I’m quite shy in real life, but when I get on stage I love to rock out and have a great time. “I’m an actress as well so I can tap into characters.” Katos reminisced about growing up listening to her parents playing blues music and its influence on her new material. Katos confessed the Motown girls group Sweethearts she performed with in high school had also influenced her new songs. “Their music is infectious,” Katos asserted. “I got a lot of performing experience with them and they taught me not to censor myself, to go on stage and let go. “They really feel the music.” Katos promised festival-goers she would perform songs she hoped to record on an EP soon. “I’ve co-written a song with my guitarist Paul O’Reilly called I Can’t Rip my Heart out Now. “It’s the first song I’ve co-written but it was great

2013. The Great Australian Beer Festival will have more than 100 boutique beers and ciders to taste, a range of gourmet food and quality music acts performing throughout the day. Early bird ticket-buyers have the chance to win a bar fridge stocked with local beer or cider every week until October 19. Festival organiser Michael Ward says the limited tickets are “selling fast” to the inaugural summer event. LOSING WEIGHT WITH MANDY FISHER ith the rise in temperatures in the past week, it makes us aware that the warmer weather is coming. Now is the time to think about how our indulgence over winter may have left tighter clothing and an expanded waistline in its wake. Now we start looking for a suitable weight loss program we can follow to help reduce our girth. There are many weight loss programs around and they all work or they wouldn’t be in the marketplace. Unfortunately that doesn’t mean that they are sustainable or a wise way to lose weight. Many programs are radical, expecting the participant to change or cut out too many food choices and make drastic behavioural changes, only to see the weight return when ceased. We have to examine the necessary criteria for losing weight when looking to follow a specified weight loss program. The criteria should be a program that is a sustainable way of eating for life. Food choices need to be taken from all the food groups. Three healthy meals a day using standard supermarket foods can be made into meals for the whole family (not meal replacements such as shakes or diet pills). Behavioural changes that are minimal and sustainable is the criteria of the Weight Works program.

Mushroom and balsamic chicken Here is one of the Weight Works meals that is a favourite with all the family: INGREDIENTS: 500g chicken drumsticks, skinned, 1 large onion, sliced, 1 x 400g can champignons, 2 tsp prepared garlic, 4 bay leaves, 3/4 cup red wine, 1/2 cup water, 2 tbs cornflour, 2 tsp chicken stock powder, 1/2 cup fructose, 2 tbs balsamic vinegar, 2 tbs worcestershire sauce METHOD: Preheat oven to 180ºC. Spray a casserole dish with cooking spray. Spray a pan with cooking spray and heat. Brown the chicken drumsticks. Layer the onion and champignons over the chicken poking the bay leaves into the layers. Mix the remaining ingredients together in a jug and pour over the top of the chicken. Cover with a lid. Bake for 30 mins, remove the lid and cook a further 30 mins uncovered until the chicken is tender. Serves 4.

BY ERIC BLAIR n all-new Kuga will hit Australian roads after the 2012 Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. It will go on sale early in 2013, perhaps even sooner. Ford Kuga comes to Australia in two specification levels, the midrange Kuga Trend and topline Kuga Titanium. An entry level variant may be added to the range when the allnew model arrives. Both of the Ford Kugas initially being imported to Australia are powered by the company’s five-cylinder Duratec 2.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that develops 147 kW of power, and 320 Nm of torque. Peak torque comes in at only 1600 rpm – and stays at that healthy number till the engine is spinning at 4000 rpm. So the great majority of owners will enjoy the efficiency of full torque virtually all of the time. We were impressed by the smoothness of the engine and it’s willingness to hold onto fuel-efficient high gears for a lot of the time. Ford Kuga Trend and Titanium are fitted with a five-speed automatic transmission matched to an AWD system, the latter using a Haldex in case you want to try them in reasonably serious unsealed surfaces. throughout the normally used zone of the rev range. Magna is offered with a five-speed manual gearbox, but the great majority of the original cars came with a four-speed automatic. Tiptronic-type sequential shifting was first fitted on Magna Sports models from September 1997. An advanced five-speed automatic transmission with sequential shifting is fitted to the sporty variants sold from August 2000 and made its way to the other models over the next couple of years. These big Mitsubishis are spacious in their underbonnet area so servicing is relatively easy. Call on the services of a professional mechanic for safetyrelated items. This once very successful line of cars came to an abrupt end in April 2008 after slow sales of the 380 caused Mitsubishi to pull out of Australian manufacturing. Spare parts for cars up to 10 years old are still carried by Mitsubishi dealers. Prices are generally reasonable and we seldom hear of any real availability problems. Automatic transmission problems were present in the Magna for years, though the troubles are less frequent in newer models. Watch for an automatic that shifts gear when it doesn’t need to, or which suddenly shifts into neutral of its own accord. Look at and feel the front tyres for uneven wear which can indicate front suspension problems. Check the paint and bumper bar around the exhaust tailpipe for an oily film, indicating engine problems. Make sure the brakes pull the car up in a straight line and that ABS, if fitted, sends a pulsing back through the pedal on hard application. Don’t forget to check your mirrors first! Look for signs of damage to seats, carpets and trim, including inside the boot.

BY ERIC BLAIR itsubishi Magna, Verada and 380 are medium large cars competing in the family car market in Australia. These Mitsubishis have a well-deserved reputation for being smooth, quiet and refined and those who can look outside the Commodore/Falcon square just love them. All of these Mitsubishis were built in Adelaide. The first Magnas were very much Australian products, later they became more closely allied to Japanese Mitsubishi models. The Mitsubishi 380 was based on an American Mitsubishi model and was larger and plusher than the Magna. Mitsubishi Verada was the name given to upmarket versions of the Magna and is sometimes regarded as a different model. The big Mitsubishis have reasonably good handling for family cars, with the 380 feeling nice and sharp on the road. Engine performance from the oldstyle four-cylinder 2.6-litre engine is reasonable, but you would never dream of calling it sporty. The later four-cylinder models had a 2.4-litre unit with a much-improved design. Four-cylinder models slowly declined in popularity in the sales race over the years and were finally taken from the Magna range in 1999. A 3.0-litre V6 engine was released in the Mitsubishi Verada in 1991 and the Magna in 1993. It was joined by a 3.5-litre V6 in some upmarket variants in October 1996. The bigger engine gradually spread to the rest of the range. In the latermodel Magna Sports and VR-X, the 3.5 engine has additional power over the standard unit. The Mitsubishi 380’s 3.8-litre engine is a stretched version of the 3.5-litre unit. There is good torque

Cricketers hope for sunny start

Big snapper run extends right around inner bay On the bite BRIAN LONG CORIO Bay’s inner harbour has been the spot for the best snapper captures for the past fortnight. With fish better than 9kg on offer, why fish anywhere else? One of the many anglers to get into the action was Paul Henry, fishing at anchor between the North Shore rocks and the channel. All was quiet on Monday afternoon until just after dark when all rods folded. The result was two fish landed with another two lost, the best weighing 9.1kg. Fishing close by was Daniel Carmichael who also found the snapper biting just on dark, catching three fish in under an hour. In the next hour he landed and released three more quality snapper. The land-based also found snapper available – Adam Hamilton landed a top fish of 8.1kg taken at St Helens, his biggest snapper to date. The same location rewarded

Gerry Knight with a snapper of 6.3kg. North Shore rocks also attracted those seeking snapper. Brendan Shorten fished for seven hours over two nights for a pigeon pair of 4.6 kg snapper, with pilchard the bait of choice. Fishing the Stingaree Bay spoil grounds returned Craig Welsh two nice snapper, both around the 3kg bracket, taken on the drift using soft plastics. The snapper take was not restricted to the inner harbour. The nine-foot bank, quarries and Wilson Spit all saw quality snapper captures. Expect the Clifton Springs area to fire over the next week or so. The vicinity of the wreck of the Anneaura Harrison saw good numbers of rock flathead along with plenty of small salmon. Things went quiet on the top of the tide but when it began to run off, the fish certainly came back on the bite with plenty of salmon and some nice snapper. Pike have been caught from many locations throughout the bay. Best land based locations are North Shore rocks, Point Lillias and the rock groin near the Royal Geelong Yacht Club. Boaties should work between Eastern Beach and Lime-burners, Stingaree Bay spoil grounds or the outer harbour spoils.

Small lures work best with the likes of 15g lasers ideal if you need to cast distances. Otherwise small deep diving bibbed lures are a stand out. Both St Leonards and Portarlington Piers have produced snapper of late and while not in big numbers those prepared to fish after dark have landed specimens to over 4kg. Salmon have also been pushing in close to the piers on a regular basis but most are generally only around the 450gram range. Whiting have been consistently available in good numbers from Queenscliff to St Leonards. Some of the better captures have come to those working between Portarlington and Clifton Springs using either fresh squid or pippies. Squid have worked their way up the bay with many of the better captures around the Clifton Springs area. Small dark coloured jigs work best, ideally at a depth of three metres. This week I found few anglers fishing the surf along the Great Ocean Road, which was a pity as there were great numbers of salmon along all the deep water rock platforms. Freshwater captures came from many of the lakes with Lake Tooliorook and Lake Wendouree producing both trout and redfin.

Vibe lures from the boats sees some outstanding captures of redfin, many around 800g. Lake Burrumbeet like many lakes is full, so some nice redfin have been taken on local smelt but a few anglers who have been casting small minnow pattern lures have seen redfin to 45cms. Lake Learmonth is still producing nice trout, mostly buck fish caught on bait lure or fly. Stuart Bryant fished Deep Lake this week, things started slow with not a fish for the first four hours but that all changed mid afternoon when the fish started to work the surface. By days ends three nice rainbow trout were landed, two better that 2kg, all on lure. Anyone looking for a piscatorially entertaining evening would be well advised to head to the Torquay Angling Club on Friday to hear fisheries expert Paul Hamer speak on the results of the acoustic snapper tagging program under way. Paul is a wealth of knowledge and the evening is a must for all snapper anglers looking for an insight into the life of one of our most sought-after species. Thomson has added association president Grant Dew to its list, the veteran all rounder crucial at the top of the batting order, while captain Brad Grapsas will be keen to get some useful overs out of Dew’s handy off spin. Manifold Heights has dropped down from division one and will be keen to get the winning spirit back. Modewarre comes up from division three for the first time. The club has installed a turf wicket and is keen to show its form over the past few seasons can cut it at the next level. WITH the footballs packed away for another season, cricket returns to local playing fields this weekend. After a long preseason, all clubs and players will be raring to go, hoping for the sometimes unpredictable spring weather to stay fine. Geelong Cricket Club kicks off its campaign on Saturday with a one day match at Ringwood. The Cats have lost some talent over winter, with Liam Buchanan taking a step back from premier cricket to play in the Geelong Cricket Association with Geelong West. Jeremy Hart has also moved on. The young leg spinner has decided to play in South Australia in the hope of gaining a place in the state side there. Geelong Cricket Association also begins its fixture with a round of oneday matches in all grades. The association will this year implement its new points cap, designed to even out the competition and help prevent clubs illegally paying money under the table to players. With the cap set at 48 points, it remains to be seen how much of an initial effect this will have, but as the cap is reduced over the next few seasons, a few clubs may feel the bite and need to look within their junior ranks to find players. Despite that, the gap between top and bottom sides appears to be widening, as the likes of Grovedale, Geelong West and South Barwon have all added to their already impressive squads. South Barwon retained the majority of its squad, adding promising young English batsman Jacob Waterson. The Swans are desperate to ensure their good form of recent seasons can finally translate to some silverware in their trophy cabinet. Geelong City is the team coming up from division two, boasting a good blend of players with division one experience, as well as some quality youngsters ready to test their skills against the top players in the district.
