Quantity over quality on family time, Dwayne tells GC HE PLAYED alongside Cats legend Gary Ablett Snr, and now he calls the play as a sports commentator on radio and pay TV. But away from the spotlight Dwayne Russell is a committed family man who met wife Lisa at 16 and volunteers as a “roadie for his son’s band. He invited the summer edition of Geelong Coast Magazine (GC) into his family life, split between homes in Highton and Fairhaven. “I believe in quantity time rather than quality time, Russell tells GC. “I prefer spending long periods of time with my kids rather than cram in a super-duper three hours then not see them for four days. Bursting with local content over 92 high-quality gloss pages, GC Magazine is out now at newsagents.

Eyes on crime set to monitor Port in 360 By MICHELLE HERBISON PORTARLINGTON’S main street will receive four CCTV cameras worth $26,000 by Easter, according to the town’s ward councillor. Cr Lindsay Ellis said the cameras would be mounted on the street’s lampposts to record public behaviour in 360 degrees. “It should cover the whole of the main shopping strip, Cr Ellis said. “There’s been a fair bit of graffiti going on but it’s just for added security. Cr Ellis said police would access recorded footage but not monitor the cameras live.

Council would provide the $26,000 for installation and 12 months of operation but business owners might have to cover costs after the first year, he said. “It would work out to $2.50 per shopkeeper per week. While I haven’t had discussions with all shopkeepers, a couple of people are delighted. “But (the cameras) are not to replace the shopkeepers’ own security systems. Cr Ellis said the cameras would also offer the “added bonus of free wifi access in the street. Portarlington Business Development Association president John Rae said the

cameras plan had “absolutely delighted traders. “There have been bus shelters being smashed recently and a fair bit of graffiti, so that will be identified immediately on this system, he said. “My big excitement about all this is the street itself will become wifi. We will have tourists come into town who’ll be able to just sit in the main street and use the wifi. Mr Rae said the cameras would also cover laneways between the street and rear car parks. “That will make people feel more secure about parking their car at the back.

Mr Rae said his group was “very pleased Cr Ellis had acted promptly on the plans. Geelong Police Area Commander Inspector Gary Thompson said officers would use the cameras for “follow-up purposes to “support investigations. “They’ll monitor public order and behavioural issues. It’s part of a crime preventative approach plus to provide assistance to investigations, Insp Thompson said. “CCTV has worked well in the Geelong central activities area but they won’t be monitored at Portarlington. That can be looked at in the future.
