Quantity over quality on family time, Dwayne tells GC HE PLAYED alongside Cats legend Gary Ablett Snr, and now he calls the play as a sports commentator on radio and pay TV. But away from the spotlight Dwayne Russell is a committed family man who met wife Lisa at 16 and volunteers as a “roadie for his son’s band. He invited the summer edition of Geelong Coast Magazine (GC) into his family life, split between homes in Highton and Fairhaven. “I believe in quantity time rather than quality time, Russell tells GC. “I prefer spending long periods of time with my kids rather than cram in a super-duper three hours then not see them for four days. Bursting with local content over 92 high-quality gloss pages, GC Magazine is out now at newsagents.

Parents’ anger over campus indecision By CHERIE DONNELLAN COUNCIL’S indecision on Christian College plans for a Surf Coast campus has forced parents wanting to enrol children to reconsider their education arrangements. Sharyn McKinnis, who has two daughters at the college, said she sold her Ocean Acres “dream home and moved to Geelong after waiting four years for council to approve the campus, controversially proposed for Spring Creek. “When we first enrolled our daughter at the college, the idea was that by the time she started or perhaps finished her
first year there would be a Torquay campus, Ms McKinnis said. “As it came closer to her starting school it became obvious the school wasn’t going to be able to build. “It’s quite disappointing. We had to leave our dream home, but Christian College is such a good school that we didn’t want to leave it. The college bought land at 248 Great Ocean Road in 2007 after council earmarked it as a future growth area. Council then tore up two plans to open the land for development amid a fierce community backlash. Planning Minister Matthew Guy

last week slammed council for repeatedly failing to decide whether the college could develop its land. Ms McKinnis said the value of a new school “outweighed environmental concern about its impact on Spring Creek. “There are so many children that have to bus into Geelong every day and Torquay’s such a growing community – there’s absolutely not enough education options for the number of children Torquay has now. Torquay’s Sandra Bradbury said the failure to develop a Christian College campus in Torquay was costly for her family in terms of money and her chil-
dren’s time. Annual bus passes with existing government support cost $600 to $700 for each of her two primary school-aged children who had to spend two hours travelling to and from Christian College in Geelong each day. Ms Bradbury said she considered the college’s curriculum and “ethos superior to other local primary school options. Ms Bradbury believed council had “misled the school and its parents about the campus plan’s prospects. “I don’t think it’s fair the community should be disadvantaged while council makes us wait for an answer.
