Ice addict jailed for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;king hitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on boy, 15 A 20-YEAR-OLD ice addict with ADHD, a â&#x20AC;&#x153;borderline IQâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;countlessâ&#x20AC;? prior convictions has been jailed for a king hit that left a 15-year-old with $15,000 worth of dental repairs. Michael Strojan, formerly of 3 Elliot Crt, Whittington, pleaded guilty to various offences including recklessly causing injury, burglary, assault with a weapon and dangerous driving. Strojan sat hunched and chewing gum behind his lawyer, wearing tracksuit pants, a T-shirt and runners, next to his girlfriend with bright pink hair and ripped white jeans.

Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable David Vanderpol said Strojan punched the boy without provocation near McDonaldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, in Ryrie St, Geelong, at 3.45pm on 20 August. The boy and his friend were waiting at traffic lights when Strojan attacked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The co-accused yelled out â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;What are you guys staring at?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; to which they replied â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Nothingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. The accused stared the victim in the face and punched him to the right side of his mouth,â&#x20AC;? Snr Const Vanderpol told the court. The victim said in a statement: â&#x20AC;&#x153;As a result of being king hit for no apparent reason I am uncomfortable returning to

Strojan fled police trying to intercept his vehicle about 5pm on 2 December, hitting speeds over 100km/h in a 50km/h zone on Western Beach Rd. The vehicle was unregistered, fitted with a false South Australian number plate and Strojan had â&#x20AC;&#x153;never held a licenceâ&#x20AC;?, the court heard. Magistrate Michael Coghlan said youth justice had â&#x20AC;&#x153;apparently not been successfulâ&#x20AC;? for Strojan previously. Mr Coghlan sentenced Strojan to 15 monthsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; jail with eight months nonparole.

City heart lab ‘makes a difference’ GEELONG’S new cardiac catheterisation laboratory is already making a “real difference” for local heart disease victims, according to Victoria’s Health Minister. David Davis officially opened the upgraded laboratory this week, saying it gave heart specialists access to the “latest technology”. The upgrade allowed more patients to receive the “best of care close to home”, he said. “The technology in this cath lab ensures faster patient turnaround, less exposure to radiation and higher-quality images to diagnose and treat patients.” Barwon Health houses the laboratory in Kardinia House, part of the Geelong Hospital complex. Heart disease killed over 7000 Victorians last year.

MP offices left in posts probe By NOEL MURPHY CORANGAMITE MP Darren Cheeseman has gone to ground as an inquiry into fake pro-Labor online comments leaves politicians and their staffers as potential sources after clearing parliamentary staff. The posts, under several aliases, related to Barwon and Colac Area health services, both of which suffered Gillard Government funding cuts before the money was restored last week. Mr Cheeseman, whose seat is the most marginal seat in Australia, failed to respond to numerous requests for comment on the posts

investigation despite last month telling the Independent he had “a lot of bollocks”. Department of Parliamentary Service (DPS) declined to say if its inquiry had interviewed Mr Cheeseman or his staff. The department released a statement saying it had completed a “preliminary inquiry” into comments on the Colac Herald’s website from a computer on the parliamentary computing network. “DPS can confirm that the computer user who made the comments was not a DPS staff member,” the statement said. “DPS is considering the mat-

ter further and will not provide any additional comments on this issue at this point in time.” Liberal Senator Michael Ronaldson, who raised the matter in parliament last month said the posts came from either “a public servant’s computer or from a computer or computers in an MP’s office”. “As the investigation to date has exonerated any public servants and investigation is still ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further,” he said. The Liberals’ candidate for Corangamite, Sarah Henderson, declined to comment.

Faggs oppose Masters By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A PROPOSED Masters home improvement store at Corio has attracted eight objections, including from a company associated with Mayor Keith Fagg. Masters’ planning permit application compelled the mayor, part of the Fagg’s Mitre 10 family, to declare a conflict of interest. A submission from The Faggs Geelong said the development was “opportunistic”, outside strategic planning policies and within a 500-metre buffer around MC Herd abattoir. MC Herd objected on the grounds the development could jeopardise its operations. A report to council said MC Herd

Corio bid ‘opportunistic’ submitted it was a substantial employer with a large investment on the site and no plans to relocate. “MC Herd is concerned the proposal does not jeopardise the existing operations and continued use of its land for an abattoir,” the report said. “The submission opposes the rezoning and permit unless issues surrounding access, security and land-use conflict are addressed.” The Faggs Geelong and other objectors claimed the development was an “out-of-centre” proposal without justification under council’s retail strategy. Objectors were concerned about its

impact on existing home-maker centres and stores in the area. The Faggs Geelong submission claimed Masters was different to Bunnings or Mitre 10 because it was a general homewares and whitegoods store, more like “a giant Big W”. Objectors also raised concerns the proposal would harm the area’s general amenity and increase traffic pressure for residents. A Corangamite Catchment Management Authority submission said part of the land was subject to flooding and required a flood hazard analysis. Council resolved to ask Planning Minister Matthew Guy to appoint an

independent panel to consider the development, which also included four retail stores. Council planning portfolio holder Rod Macdonald, said consideration of the development would also take in adjoining land at 240 Bacchus Marsh Rd, slated for an office and commercial park. “The (Masters) site is well-positioned for commercial development, benefiting from its exposure to Bacchus Marsh Rd and proximity to the Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct,” he said. The proposal would also utilise land “not being used to its potential at a key entrance to Geelong” while providing jobs for the Corio area, Cr Macdonald said.

Head knocks could force retirement, says Cats coach By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN CONCERN over brain injuries from concussions could finish an AFL player’s career, Geelong Cats assistant coach Dale Amos has conceded. But Amos said he believed clubs would be able to manage the medical concerns to save players’ careers. “I’d like to hope that we are in a position where clubs can manipulate the way through the situation, where they manage it as well as they possibly can so it doesn’t come to that,” he said. “But there’s every possibility that it may happen. Whatever precautions can be put in play, whatever test it is, whatever treatment we need to provide, whatever lay-off is required for players to be looked after, that’s what will be done.” Fears of the long-term effects of concussion were renewed when former Geelong, Sydney and Carlton Brownlow Medallist Greg Williams this week revealed his struggles with a degenerative brain condition, affecting his memory and moods. Williams blamed a career filled with head knocks before singling out Cats captain Joel Selwood as a likely future victim of the condition because of the way he played. Medical studies have indicated

a link between repeated concussions and brain degeneration. Amos said the Cats’ medical staff utilised “world’s-best practice” when dealing with head injuries. “We trust what they do and trust they’re accessing the people within the industry and outside who have experience on those matters. “We have consulted very closely with the players and our medical staff are very thorough in the process they go through.” Amos said the process for dealing with head injury was strict. “You just can’t cheat the system anymore. The tests are in place, the medical staff go above and beyond what is required to tick the player off and ensuring the players are in a fit state to perform. “Clubs are heavily invested in player welfare and making sure that comes first in all situations. There’s no compromise and there’s no shortcuts, with head injury in particular.” Amos said the club was unable to change the way Selwood played. “We all admire Joel and we certainly don’t want that to go out of the way he plays the game. “He’s captain of our footy club for a reason, he leads by example.”

Doctors attack Avalon air show focus on arm sales DOCTORS have attacked Avalon’s international air show over weapons sales. The show started this week with a four-day trade fair in military and civilian aircraft and systems. Visitors from around the world attended, with the air show promoting its trade days as a “leading gateway” to important defence aviation markets in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

But Medical Association for the Prevention of War president Dr Jenny Grounds said a “long history of corruption and bribery in the sales of weapons” assisted civil war and instability around the globe. “It’s a huge business, the military industry a complex, huge multinational business and, like anywhere there’s lots of money to be made, a certain amount of corruption is hard to avoid altogether,” Dr Grounds said.

The Independent does not suggest any impropriety at the Avalon show. The medical association said $1738 billion was spent last year on weapons world-wide – more than 10 times the $139 billion the United Nations was seeking for its Millennium Development goals on education, health and the environment. Association Victorian president Margaret Beavis said Avalon had “developed a focus on selling weapons and armaments”.

A MAGISTRATE has handed a six-month prison sentence to a Corio methylamphetamine trafficker. Christopher Chambers, 23, of Moreland Ave, Corio, pleaded guilty in Geelong Magistrates’ Court this week to trafficking and using methylamphetamine, handling stolen goods and possessing ammunition. Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable David Vanderpol said officers searched Chambers’ residence after September’s Operation Railbird identified phone calls and text messages between him and a neighbour. Travis Kelly was arrested on October 1 with one ounce of methylamphetamines. “Police located inside a ... safe one set of micro scales, zip lock bags, drug-related notes and two glass smoking pipes. Drug-related papers and notes referring “overtly to drug trafficking” were found in drawers, Snr Const Vanderpol said. Police arrested Chambers after finding a stolen Yamaha R1 motorbike and a shotgun shell and cartridge. Defence lawyer Duncan Ferguson said Chambers “went straight to ice” to deal with “serious depression” after both parents’ suicides. Magistrate Michael Coghlan was unsatisfied Chambers would rehabilitate himself, imposing a six-month prison sentence. He postponed a bail application.

Geelong Taxi Network boss Peter Valentine said the State Government had â&#x20AC;&#x153;approved in principleâ&#x20AC;? plans for large taxis to travel directly to homes from central Geelong on Friday and Saturday nights. A marshalling service would co-ordinate groups to fill the cabs, Mr Valentine said. The Independent reported in June that Geelong

Taxi Network and council were discussing the plans. The program would aim to decrease misbehaviour at bus ranks, Mr Valentine said. City of Greater Geelong central Geelong and waterfront manager Steve Bentley said council was waiting for Geelong Taxi Network to determine the viability of a shared-ride system. Council would have to â&#x20AC;&#x153;consider the necessityâ&#x20AC;? of its existing Night Rider service from central Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nightclub precinct if the shared-ride taxi system was to proceed, he said.

veying parents of 7000 underfives in eastern Australia over three years. Lead researcher Professor Robyn Jorgensen said the study showed young children participating in early-years swimming achieved a wider range of skills earlier. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many of these skills are

those that help young children into the transition into formal learning contexts such as preschool or school.â&#x20AC;? Leopold Swim Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Rebecca Andrewartha said she had noticed that children undertaking swimming lessons appeared to have better co-ordination and motor skills.

Parks blamed over dive in wreck visits VISITOR numbers to Ocean Grove’s HMAS Canberra have “dropped off” due to Parks Victoria’s failure to rebuild the dive site’s reputation after a three-month closure more than a year ago, according to a local diving operator. Dive Victoria’s Jason Salter said Parks Victoria had failed to “put enough effort” into promoting the $10 million site to visitors. “Parks has done such a poor job of managing the site. We carried lots of people when it first opened but those numbers have dropped off more than they should have because of

lack of promotion and support for the project.” The previous State Government scuttled the former Navy ship in October 2009 to create an artificial reef and dive attraction. The Independent reported in October 2011 Mr Salter’s calls for Parks to reopen the site after safety concerns forced its closure. “I informed Parks about a section that had dislodged then two days later I told them it had fallen into the sea and was safe,” Mr Salter said. “There was no need for it to be closed – this is just a typical reaction of the Govern-

ment trying to cover its arse.” Geelong Otway Tourism’s Roger Grant agreed the ship’s attraction had “lost momentum”, requiring further promotion. “State Government is the legal entity responsible for the ship, so if divers are injured or worse they’re accountable. They would rather see the wreck as safe as possible but it has been a shame it did have that break in continuity.” Mr Grant said in 2011 the vessel had “shifted a bit further” than expected, requiring closure and an investigation to deem it safe. Geelong Otway Tourism

would boost the HMAS Canberra’s marketing within the dive industry, he said. “We’ve engaged photographers out there to take some time-lapse still and moving footage. People will be amazed at the growth of sea-life around the wreck since its sinking.” A Parks Victoria spokesperson said the department planned “further promotions” for the site this year. “The closure of the site two years ago was unfortunate but absolutely necessary in the interests of public safety. We work actively with operators to promote their businesses wherever possible.”

Edwards Point Wildlife Reserve president Karin Shepherd will lead the St Leonards walk, enlightening participants with some history and features of the area. “It’s a beautiful spot and it’s a bit different to other walks because it’s the only coastal woodland left on the Bellarine Peninsula,” she explained. The Eastern Park walk is on Tuesday, with walkers to meet at Geelong Botanical Gardens’ entrance. The St Leonards walk at Edwards Point Wildlife Reserve, Beach Rd, is on Thursday, with walkers to meet at Beach Rd’s car park. Registrations for both walks open 10am for a 10.15am start and finishing about 11.15am.

A SOCIAL media site’s fears a container of Geelong history and memorabilia was about to be auctioned off was a false alarm, according to an organisation managing the items. Facebook site Geelong had posted fears the items, believed to have been donated to the city’s museum association, would be dumped if not sold. Almost 40 people posted their outrage at the prospect of losing more Geelong history. Glenn Richards posted: “Surely there is something we could collectively do to prevent losing these precious items”. Jenny Hawkins and others offered to attend the auction on 2 March at North Geelong’s former Mill Markets premises to buy back the items. But Geelong Museum Association president Bec Gurrie said the page had issued a false alarm. “We moved all our materials from Mill

Markets to Osborne House years ago, so there’s no foundation to this,” she said. “I am aware of the Facebook post but it was made without any authorisation from our association. “The auction of collectibles and antiques is connected only to Mill Markets, not to Geelong Museum Association. “We are still a going concern and have been operating from Osborne House, open on Tuesdays and Thursdays. “In fact, we’re preparing for a major exhibition starting this weekend, celebrating the centenary of the first Royal Australian Naval College, which opened at Osborne House in 1913.” The celebrations include unveiling a commemorative plaque, a Royal Australian Navy Band and Geelong Memorial Brass Band performance and an exhibition of artefacts and memorabilia. The exhibition will be open 10am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday.

Rainbow in lifeline win A “GENEROUS benefactor” has extended a financial lifeline to a Geelong charity providing horse-riding experiences to disabled children, according to its president. Rainbow Riders’ Juliet Williams said the “short-term reprieve had allowed the charity to resume this week after failing to win a funding appeal to Community Services Minister Mary Wooldridge. Ms Wooldridge had rejected the bid for a “one-off sum of $23,000” to match community donations, Ms Williams said. “We are all aware of the work that lies ahead to develop a far more robust business model,” she said. “We now have a reasonable timeframe to continue discussions with … stakeholders to make this happen.”

Rubbish return on rates

I WRITE regarding councillor Andy Richards’ comments on hard rubbish collection (Letters, 22 February). I have been a resident of Point Lonsdale for 53 years. At the moment I pay approximately $1000 in rates a year to Geelong. We paid for our own roads to be built here and for my $1000 rates council sweeps the gutters approximately twice a year. I receive nothing else, only a voucher to take a car boot-load to the tip. Come on, Mr Mayor, what about a hard rubbish collection or a voucher for one or two trailer loads a year. AS RALPH Huisman wrote in the Independent (Letters, 15 February) people are free to reference Nazis. But the recent attacks on myself were shameless and despicable. My opinion was unfairly compared with the Nazis’ mind control and I had every right to be offended. Mr Huisman’s statement that “any reference to Nazis should not necessitate an automatic apology to the Jewish community” was misguided to say the least. Michael Spencer’s 18 January letter, which had caused my offence, was not just a simple reference to Nazis but a comparison between a concerned citizen and a murderous regime and I simply stated I was personally offended and requested a personal apology. English lesson TEACHERS have very little freedom in what they teach and must stick to the curriculum but who chooses it? A few years ago someone decided that spelling was unimportant and could be ignored. We can see the results. English is a marvellous living language with words taken from other times and places. For example, ‘blitz’ came from ‘blitzkreig’, German for ‘lightning war’. In India the government tried to stamp out English as the official language only to find any other was bound to offend somebody. The prospect put paid to that. English is still there. Scenes from a maul I WAS horrified after reading in last week’s Independent about the poor defenceless cat almost ripped apart by two savage German shepherd guard dogs. The owner was fined $6000 after admitting that “perhaps” the gate had been left open. These dogs had been bought after a 2010 breakin as part of a “security plan”. I challenge anyone to justify the mauling of a defenceless cat on its property as part of dogs protecting their master’s house. Mr Lilley would not have intentionally allowed his dogs to maul the cat but failing to ensure the gates were securely shut has done irreparable damage. The owner of the cat will be forever traumatised, haunted by the image of her beloved pet being ripped apart, its tortured yowls of unimaginable agony echoing in her ears. Dog owners must be more vigilant in ensuring their pets are kept within their properties, not just for the dogs’ safety but for other animals and people as well. How many more innocent animals, babies, children and adults have to suffer because of dog owners’ complacency? Let’s hope this poor cat’s horrific, undeserved death serves as a wake-up call for owners to keep their dogs on their properties. Suzanne Bridson Herne Hill

Stories of identity REFLECTING on their Jewish identity with a sombre theme amid “ghastly” recent family events inspired a new album by Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier. Their Stories of Ghosts plays on Old Testament themes from the perspective of the “devout Jewish atheist” partners in life and music. “Willy and I both grew up in Jewish households. Willy is the son of holocaust survivors but there was not a lot of religion in their house or in my house either,” Conway explained. “What’s interesting about being Jewish is you can certainly identify with the community and not believe in God.” The couple chose 10 of the 18 songs they wrote for the new album to create a strong theme. “We got rid of everything that was a side issue,” Conway recounted. “It’s a sombre record. There’s a lot of turmoil going on in our personal lives and we’ve had some fairly ghastly family events.” Zygier told Jon Faine on ABC 774 radio recently that he was the uncle of “Prisoner

X”, Ben Zygier, the Australian who died in an Israeli prison in 2010 and whose story attracted recent media attention. Zygier and Conway have performed and recorded together since meeting in 1991 when she employed him as a guitarist. Eight records and three children later they continue to enjoy a “full, wholesome partnership”, Conway revealed. “We’re in each other’s pockets and it’s not a problem for either of us. We both feel stimulated by the other musically and we both enjoy each other’s company. “We like similar things and our admiration for songwriters like Paul Simon, Randy Newman, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan is probably apparent in our stuff - and they all happen to be Jewish,” she mused. Having three teenage daughters opened Conway’s eyes to new technologies, she laughed. “We’ve been taking requests on Facebook so if people are interested in hearing a particular song they can write to us. Project showcases flooring THE HOME owner revisited history in the building process, following olden trends of 12-foot high ceilings, large cornices and a hand-made floor featuring gorgeous medallions, stars and a Grecian border. Cork and Parquetry Specialists owner Chris Stringer says the flooring project took twice as long as a typical floorboards installation, not to mention plenty of manpower. “Sometimes to get the right look and effect you need to do it by hand. A lot of people think a machine does everything but in the past they did everything by hand. It’s a lot of intricate work.” Belmont-based Chris is a master of the “old crafts”, creating unique floor designs for clients in Geelong, Melbourne and interstate. He also teaches olden flooring techniques to layers and sanders through the Australian Timber Floor Association. “We get requests from around Australia because there aren’t a lot of people prepared to do the hand-scraping of floors, wire brushing and the older finishes with oils and waxes,” Chris explains. Rylock Windows’ Murray Riccardi says most aluminium windows and doors have some unfinished edges from which corrosion can “crawl” under painted surfaces but the problem is absent with anodised finishes. Murray says natural anodised windows should be seriously considered for beachside locations. Other ways of dramatically reducing the risk of corrosion damage are also available. “An important thing is to rinse off regularly using a garden hose, at least every three months and more often if your home is close to the sea or any other salty or corrosive atmosphere,” Murray says. “Proper washing should be done on a regular basis, say every six months in a suburban or residential area and every three in a seaside or industrial area where air contains pollutants. Swimming lessons save lives GEELONG Aquatic Centre is on a mission to save lives through its adult learn-to-swim classes. The centre’s Geoff Gill says a recent national report highlights the alarming number of adult drowning deaths. “The number of adults who drown is far higher than it should be because there are still a significant percentage of mature age people who can’t swim,” Geoff explains. “Many older people never had the chance to learn, and in our region, surrounded by water, it’s important that a person can at least save themselves should the need arise. “If you fall off a boat in Corio bay it’s at least 200 or 300 metres to safety and lots of adults can’t do it. “Swimming 25 metres in a pool isn’t much good and having a pool in the backyard doesn’t help much either if you get caught in a rip in the surf.” Geoff says some older children leave primary school swim lessons without achieving the required level of skill – swimming at least 400 metres unaided. “We have an increasing number of adults wanting to learn to swim and that includes younger teenagers. Not only does it give people a vital survival skill, it’s a healthy pastime and has benefits for

By ERIC BLAIR THE SMALL-MEDIUM Peugeot 206 signalled a new era for the French marque in Australia when it was launched here in September 1999. It was the beginning of a strong comeback, principally because it was favourably priced and lifted the public image of Peugeot away from that of being a somewhat upmarket, perhaps even unapproachable, brand. Peugeot 206 rides and handles like a quality car that’s a full-size larger than its 3.8-metre length would suggest. In the late 1990s the French cars dynamics were well ahead of those of the typical Asian machine of the era with its style and polish. Many were sold to Australians who enjoy driving, not to mention those who love all things French. It rode and handled like a quality car and its dynamics were well ahead of those of the typical Asian cars of the time. The styling of the baby Peugeot broke new ground, with big bold curves and sweeping angles. In particular look at the asymmetrical shape of the body and at the bold lines of the C-pillars. So successful was the shape of the little car that the designers eventually carried the styling theme to the rest of the Peugeot range. In its home country the Peugeot 206 is used by many as a family car so has excellent space efficiency. There’s reasonable accommodation for four people and a fair amount of luggage. The 206’s interior has been designed to provide a variety of passenger/luggage combinations by folding different seats as required. Engines in the Peugeot 206 begin with a 1.4-litre unit, only sold from March 2002 and used in the lower cost variants. The 1.4 has better performance than you might expect in a car of this size, but try it for yourself, preferably with a reasonable number of people on board before settling for its lower price. Far more common is a

Check that the roof mechanism on a 206CC works smoothly and that there are no unexpected noises during its operation. During the test drive be sure there are no wind noises from the roof when it’s closed. Engines are generally smooth so be suspicious of one that’s on the rocky side, particularly when first started from cold.

IndySport Indy Sport Cats aiming to go out on high WITH one round remaining in the Victorian Premier Cricket season, Geelong finds itself 11th on the table and out of finals contention, barring a miracle. The Cats hopes remained dashed despite a spirited outright victory last game against St Kilda. Marc Carson led the way with seven wickets for the match, while Jake Reed took five. Hayden Butterworth and Meyrick Buchanan both continued their fine seasons with the willow, scoring valuable runs. To be fair to the Cats, they are a young squad after some veterans moved on in recent years and, while their lack of experience has showed out at times, they have proved their best is competitive against the strongest sides in the competition. They will hope to go out on a high with a big win over bottom-placed Northcote.

In Geelong Cricket Association, the final six in division one looks set in stone after the two games that could have had an impact panned out as expected. St Joseph’s was seventh place going into this final round but when Grovedale made a mammoth 7/329 on the back of a Gareth Yelland century, Joeys’ hopes of an upset win looked all but gone. The Tigers’ firepower with the ball will ensure

that another disappointing season for St Joseph’s is wrapped up by tomorrow night. Across town, Leopold was in sixth but took its destiny in its own hands to also make a big score, piling on 6/285 against Geelong City, with Ben O’Brien scoring a fine century of his own. The only interest now will be in which order the top six teams finish tomorrow evening. In division two, eighth-placed Torquay appears to be out of contention after giving up 291 to bottom side Alexander Thomson. Seventh-placed Waurn Ponds has given itself a good chance of remaining in the hunt, dismissing Guild St Mary’s for just 187 before cruising to 2/82 at stumps. However, it will all be for nought if fifthplaced St Albans Breakwater and sixth-placed

Newcomb & District can win their games and hold their spots. The Dinos are in a dominant position despite only scoring 161 runs, having Manifold Heights 6/30 in reply, and should record a win. The Saints look a little less certain, resuming at 4/34 chasing Marshall’s 174. This will be the ultimate test of their lower order and if they succeed then they can honestly say they have earned their right to contest the finals. In division three, Inverleigh was the only side capable of sneaking into the top six if it could manufacture an outright result. But Teesdale put paid to that idea, scoring 315 runs, Ben Firman starring with 153. The top-six can use this week as a training run, safe in the knowledge their quest for the ultimate prize is still alive.

ANGLERS were spoilt for choice in both fresh and saltwater over the past week. Lake Purrumbete produced plenty of quality trout, especially on the troll. Fish nudging better than 4kg were taken, with the area between Hoses and Shag rocks best when lures were trolled at 9m with downriggers. Lake Bullen Merri also rewarded trolling anglers with trout but generally smaller. Tassie Devils in the gold colours and deep-diving minnow pattern lures worked well. Lake Tooliorook also produced brown and rainbow trout, with trolling again the best method but closer to shore. Paul Harris fished the Barwon River just downstream of Inverleigh where he caught good numbers of redfin on an Atomic Shad in the clear red colour. He caught over a dozen reddies, his best 920g. James Leach trolled the Barwon River in his kayak upstream of the ring road, catching and releasing over 20 fish. Most were small but he kept two around 800g. The redfin should fire over the next few days from Shannon Ave downstream to Breakwater after Tuesday’s rain. Terry Milligan fished Queen’s Park where carp were biting, especially late in the evenings. Terry distributed plenty of berley early and returned at 6pm to catch fish as fast as he put a bread bait out, landing nine to more than 8kg by nightfall. Snapper catches from the shore inside Corio Bay increase over the week. Most were 30cm to 38cm and a welcome sight at St Helens, North Shore rocks and Cunningham Pier. Daniel Blackmore fished the Stingaree Bay spoil grounds where he found reasonable numbers of pinky snapper. Many were undersize but Daniel’s persistence paid off with a bag-limit catch of fish to

Nathan Holt fished soft plastics on the outer-harbour spoils on Saturday and Sunday’s high tides, returning both days with a nice catch if snapper, pike, flathead and squid. Nathan said the best fishing was on the outer-edge of the spoils.

Whiting were caught from Bird Rock to the quarries, in generally in less than 3.5m. Pippies were the bait, with most whiting averaging 33cms. The same area also produced reasonable numbers of garfish for anglers using berley. Stan Reese trolled diving minnow-pattern lures for snapper from the sandbar near Point Henry head-

ing down toward Point Wilson. The fishing wasn’t red hot but Stan still managed to land three snapper to 3.6kg along with a nice bag of flathead reaching 66cm. Anglers chasing whiting between St Leonards and Queenscliff gave mixed reports. Many boats were on the water, with most catching about a dozen fish on pippies and squid. Damian Knot fished Swan Bay where he caught the best flathead I saw. His 3.4kg fish was one of six he landed on Monday morning. Damian used bluebait suspended under a small float but said berley was essential to bring the fish to the boat. Swan Bay also produced good numbers of garfish and leatherjacket during the week. Salmon remained a viable option in The Rip area. Trolling small white occy lures will catch fish but casting small soft plastics into the surface action always produces the best results. Drifting the area between Queenscliff and Swan Bay’s entrance retuned some nice flathead, with either squid or bluebait getting results. However, anglers using soft plastics have been the clear winners recently. Kingfish become more plentiful, with the best captures reported from anglers fishing offshore. Collendina to Black Rock was the best area, with jigging light jigs generally around 100g returning the best results. Surf anglers enjoyed some hot salmon action on the rock platforms between Eastern View and Wye River, particularly two hours either side of high tide. Lure was the only way to go, with small metal baitfish-profile lures around 30g the perfect size. This weekend’s afternoon tides should be perfect for the salmon off the rocks at destinations such as Cinema Point, Wye River or Sheoaks if the water is clean.
