DOING IT RIGHT IN REAL ESTATE GEELONG real estate agent Leon Gleeson fondly remembers calling senior agents “uncle” when he started out in the business. Mr Gleeson says real estate in Geelong has changed dramatically since he entered the scene 50 years ago. The experienced agent recently celebrated his 50-year anniversary in real estate with about 40 industry members at The Wool Exchange restaurant. Catching up with old friends was the feature of the night, he said. Mr Gleeson says despite still “working flat chat” but is now thinking of playing more golf. His 50 years have involved him working in all aspects of the real estate business from book-keeper and rent collector to property manager, auctioneer and salesman. Mr Gleeson said he always had a flair for auctioneering and treated it as an “art”. He worked for Russell Cuthbertson for about 30 years before becoming a partner in the business for about 15 years. Since selling to CJ Keane about five years ago, Mr Gleeson has been working for himself on real estate and managing owners’ corporates. Mr Gleeson spent many years working with both Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) and the salesmen’s association. Mr Gleeson said he had seen many changes in Geelong and the real estate industry over his 50 years. “A number of years ago, the agents around town all knew each other, respected each other and worked with each other. In the last few years they’re all franchised and nobody knows each other anymore.” Being completely honest with both clients and customers is the key to real estate suc-

cess, Mr Gleeson said. “If you are always fair to the tenants and purchasers they end up coming back to you as vendors and landlords themselves and it goes on and on. If you’ve done it all for 50 years and you’re still in business, you’ve done something right”.

The company’s Baywater Estate will feature exclusive bay frontage lots with cliff-top views across Port Phillip Bay and easy access to the beach and boat harbour below. Development Manager Richard Bisinella said Baywater Estate was the first residential-zoned land to come on the market at Curlewis. “The large, bay-frontage lots in the new estate offer a rare opportunity for people to build that spectacular cliff-top home they’ve always dreamed of.” Baywater Estate is the fourth residential estate now available in the Jetty Road growth corridor near Drysdale.
