The Independent reported last year that the newspaper dumped 24 production staff, with Mr Buttner citing cost-cutting and increased efficiencies.

He said pre-press functions would move to Leader Newspapers’ office at Blackburn.

The move followed News Limited announcing that subediting for weekly newspapers Geelong News and Echo would shift to Melbourne.

Roy Morgan Research figures showed the newspaper’s Saturday readership dropped from 109,000 at March 2011 to 84,000 at March 2012.

Monday to Friday readership fell from 85,000 to 54,000 during the same period.

Saturday circulation has declined from more than 50,000 to 42,000, with Monday to Friday falling to 23,660, according to media and advertising authority B&T.

BY JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG Advertiser staff face relocation to Melbourne as part of a News Limited “one city, one newsroom” strategy, the company’s boss revealed on Wednesday.

Kim Williams admitted a variety of positions would become redundant while announcing sweeping changes to the media giant’s operations.

Mr Williams told Geelong Advertiser staff in a televised address that the one city, one newsroom plan would include daily, Sunday and community products.

A new Victorian division would house all statebased operations, “uniting the skills and expertise of the metropolitan, regional and community operations”.

“The changes will provide streamlined operations in management, editorial, advertising sales and marketing across print and digital products.

“The new operating model is designed to empower staff to work smarter and faster.

“We will up-skill our central functions and eliminate wasteful duplication.”

Mr Williams said he was as yet unable to say how many positions would become redundant.

The changes included integration of a digital strategy across all News Limited platforms, he said.

A Geelong Advertiser source told the Independent on Wednesday that the paper’s managers and editors would discuss what the changes meant for Geelong on Thursday before telling staff on Friday.

An Advertiser employee, who declined to be identified, said staff were confused about their future.

BY JOHN VAN KLAVEREN LITTLE Creatures’ plans for its Geelong brewery remain intact despite liquor giant Lion launching a takeover bid.

Marketing manager Miles Hull said Lion had given Little Creatures’ board an undertaking to complete the Geelong development.

Little Creatures plans to build a brewery and dining hall on a former Valley Mill site in South Geelong.

Beverages announced last week that Lion had offered $381.6 million for the company, with its board recommending acceptance.

Mr Hull said the takeover was subject to shareholder approval in September, with the transition of ownership in October.

“Lion has included an undertaking to Little Creatures that it’s committed to Geelong,” he said.

“Lion indicated it was enthusiastic about our plans for Geelong.

“There is a little uncertainty in operations but we’re encouraged

by Lion’s enthusiasm. We’ll have

to wait to see but we’re heartened

by Lion’s indications.”

Mr Hull said the Geelong development would become the “centrepiece of the future” for Little Creatures.

“Our Fremantle brewery is at capacity and has no potential for further growth, so we can’t supply the level of demand without Geelong. We need Geelong to drive growth in the eastern seaboard markets.

“There's a great deal of community interest and engagement in what we are doing.”

Ablett’s tragic daughter in court for assault:

‘Devil made me do it’

BY MICHELLE HERBISON THE DEVIL made Gary Ablett senior’s daughter assault a woman in Melbourne, a Geelong court heard this week.

“Because I believe in Jesus. It’s Lucifer,” Natasha Ablett told Geelong police as she explained the unprovoked attack, Geelong Magistrates Court heard.

Ablett, of Highton, pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful assault in June and July last year.

Police Prosecutor Senior Constable Jennifer Horgan told the court Ablett assaulted a woman at Melbourne’s Southern Cross railway station.

Ablett punched the woman in the head and face while yelling “That’s my bag, give me my bag,” the court heard.

“As the victim cowered and put her hands up to defend herself, the accused grabbed hold of the victim’s left arm and continued punching and yelling at the victim,” Snr Const Horgan said.

The victim’s husband pulled Ablett away from the victim and police arrived, the court heard.

Snr Const Horgan said the incident left the woman’s head and neck swollen and bruised. She also experienced psychiatric and sleep problems.

Ablett also assaulted staff at a community rehabilitation facility when

they “didn’t give me all my cigarettes and money”, the court heard.

Ablett’s defence lawyer, Shane Balkin, said she “continued to be quite unwell”, heard voices and had strong religious beliefs.

Mr Balkin said Ablett had fortnightly injections to treat schizophrenia.

She had told her lawyer and health workers she “wouldn’t mind going to jail,” Mr Balkin told the court.

“That would appear to be a cry for secure, permanent and ordered housing,” he said.

“She has been homeless for several months in the sense that she hasn’t had a permanent place of residence. This

continues to be an issue.”

Mr Balkin said Ablett also wanted to return to a Ballarat mental health centre.

Ms Ablett’s case worker at Corio Community Health, Samantha Broughton, told the court from the witness box that Ablett’s desire to be jailed showed “how unwell she really is”.

“Natasha has been unwell for the whole six weeks I’ve known her,” Ms Broughton said.

Ablett had been admitted to mental health service Geelong’s Swanston Centre “a few more than 10” times since 1998, she said.

Magistrate Ron Saines fined Ablett $500.

A GEELONG charity foundation will hand out $550,000 to 39 “diverse” projects and programs across the region in 2012, its chair has announced.

Val Lawrence said Geelong Community Foundation would allocation $50,000 more than last year thanks to the generosity of its donors in “challenging economic times”.

Maree Hansen said the state funding for a wheelchair-accessible vehicle to carry 13-year-old grandson Harry was conditional on the family raising the rest of the money required by the end of June.

Charity foundation I Give A Buck had raised $14,000 for the car but donations were “slow”, Ms Hansen said.

The family was $5000 short of its target.

“Ideally we need $55,000 to a buy a brand-new car but even raising $30,000 (for a secondhand van) would be a great effort,” Ms Hansen said.

Harry was born with multiple disabilities including cerebral palsy and needed 24-hour care, she said.

Ms Hansen, Harry’s primary carer, described him as a “joy”.

“He laughs and has fun with life. He’s a mad (Geelong) Cats fan.”

I Give A Buck’s Liat Harrower said Harry’s appeal was “languishing”.

“Normally we only actively run an appeal for seven or eight weeks but we’ve run Harry’s for longer, hoping someone will pull through with a large donation.”

Ms Harrower said the foundation was accepting donations at igiveabuck.org.au.

BY JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A GEELONG abattoir running MRI tests on job applicants’ lower backs could be accused of discrimination, a Geelong lawyer has revealed.

Slater and Gordon’s Danny Connor said MC Herd rejected at least one candidate’s application based on an inconclusive MRI test.

Mr Connor said the pre-employment tests could discriminate against older workers without any injury or medical condition.

He said the testing was an abuse of the medical system, using expensive and intrusive procedures.

“Employers are using it to cull employees,” Mr Connor said.

“One applicant who was a plasterer for many years with no injuries was told he was a good candidate but had to go through a pre-employment medical.

“He was sent to a local clinic and subjected to an MRI of the lower back.

The result said he had a degenerative process in his back, simply the product of his age.

“However, on hearing the news he panicked and thought he had a serious injury whereas he just has the back you would expect of a man in his 40s.

Mr Connor said employers could stop bending and lifting through occupational health and safety procedures if they wanted to eliminate injury risks.

“Using a variety of pre-employment tools makes sense from a business perspective but there is a grey line around some tests and their interpretation.”

MC Herd’s job application form states that applicants must undergo a medical examination including an MRI of the lower back.

“The MRI is a screening test used to support a diagnosis where it shows a potential weakness and its findings may not be consistent with clinical features,” the form says.

“If that occurs, it is company policy not to submit any person to the type of work mentioned in the position description.”

MC Herd managing director Frank Herd was unavailable for comment.

“I grew up in Hamilton on a farm and one day a Tiger Moth plane landed in our top paddock. The plane owner took me on a flight around my farm.”

Mr Bywaters will showcase his replica Tiger Moth at Geelong Gallery’s House and Home exhibition, opening Saturday.

Four photographs of biplanes featuring in suburban settings accompany the model.

“The biplane itself has a lovely seductive, romantic and quite nostalgic feel about it,” Mr Bywaters explained.

“I wanted the photographs to be like windows into scenes of the plane, like memories.”

He spent more than 18 months to build the plywood and paper mache model, whose wingspan and length both measured four metres.

Leading economist on Geelong:

Amber ail for local economy

BY JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AMBER warning lights are flashing on Geelong’s economy, a new report has revealed.

Report co-author and economist Peter Brain said Geelong lagged behind many Australian regions in several key economic indicators.

Geelong was a classic case of a region missing the benefits of the mining boom, he said.

National Economics prepared the State of the Regions report for Australian Local Government Association.

The report said Geelong underutilised its most competitive enterprises - potential medical infrastructure and education and training facilities.

Business income declined 8.5 per cent between 2010 and 2012, compounding a 3.8 per cent drop between 2007 and 2010.

Non-residential and engineering construction fell 17 and 16 per cent respectively in 2012.

Dr Brain said Geelong rode out the global financial crisis but had been “deteriorating” since.

Unemployment increased a further one per cent and more working-age residents were accessing social security, he said.

“Geelong is not doing as well as it was. It’s a clear case of being adversely affected by the mining boom.

“Geelong is not getting the huge input other regions are getting from the mining boom.

“Gross regional product was running at 2.2 per cent a year but that’s halved to 1.3 per cent.

“The underlying economic base is declining. The quality of jobs available and level of housing affordability is decreasing.”

Dr Brain said housing affordability was at a “trigger point” of 40 per cent.

“Beyond that you will be getting housing shortages because people can’t get good jobs to support mortgages.”

But the Deakin University architecture student and stroke victim said an extraodinary piece of equipment had given her renewed hope.

The Victorian-first SaeboFlex custom-fitted orthotic device has also excited therapists at North Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s McKellar Centre.

The Independentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2012 charity golf day for the centre helped buy the specialised equipment.

The equipment was previously unavailable in Victoria, forcing McKellar staff to borrow it from facilities in New South Wales.

Dennisse suffered an aneurism â&#x20AC;&#x153;out of the blueâ&#x20AC;? a year ago, leading to a stroke and robbing her of almost a year of life.

She spent four weeks in hospital, followed by months of intense rehabilitation and therapy.

Occupational therapist Debbie Verikios said the equipment was helping rehabilitate stroke, cerebral palsy and road trauma victims. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In these situations itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a brain injury that affects messages to the arm and hand,â&#x20AC;? Ms Verikios said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sometimes the hand is too weak to function or muscles may

be so contracted that people canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t open their hand up. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The SaeboFlex allows greater arm and hand function. Even if it has been years since the injury, this equipment still improves function immediately.â&#x20AC;?

Dennisse said SaeboFlex helped her so much she was buying one with the help of Deakin University. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It allows me to be independent and do my own therapy regularly at home. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It also has emotional benefits because I feel better about the future, it gives me hope.â&#x20AC;?

Dennisse said she had been scared at the prospect of tackling an approaching study unit in model making. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was dreading trying to make models for my course and do the fine ruling my course needs without this equipment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;After using it I can do things I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do before. I had improved function after just two weeks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s retraining the pathways to the brain. I can now pick up a drink bottle by myself. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any long-term goals. I just want to be able to do the little things that we otherwise take for granted.â&#x20AC;?

Samaritan for homeless men

BY MICHELLE HERBISON VOLUNTEERS for a new dropin shelter for homeless men are preparing for the centre’s first tenants.

Samaritan House’s Josephine Barnes hoped to open the facility “toward the beginning of July” pending volunteer numbers.

About 16 volunteers “from a variety of backgrounds” visited the house on Monday and 24 on Wednesday to discuss house procedures, she said.

Ms Barnes said Samaritan House, in an undisclosed Newcomb location, would begin providing shelter to between four and six homeless men a night.

She hoped renovations would expand the house to accommodate 20 “guests” by March.

“We’re hoping to make it as homely as possible,” Ms Barnes said.

“Because it’s not funded we’ll be dependent on volunteers, so we want to have as many of them as we can.”

Ms Barnes said Samaritan House would be Geelong’s only crisis housing centre after the closure of similar facilities under St Vincent de Paul and The Salvation Army.

“It’s a new initiative in the area by really concerned people who want to try and help people get off the streets for a respite,” she said.

“We’ll offer a hot shower and a nice comfy bed, a chance to wash their clothes and have a bit of a break from the streets.”

PLANS for Point Wilson to be Victoria’s second container port have empowered opposition to a proposed transport hub for farmland between Lara and Little River, according to objectors.

Little River Rural Action Group’s Patrick O’Halloran said the Point Wilson port would make the transport “intermodal” a better fit for the group’s preferred site of Avalon Airport.

The Independent revealed earlier this month that a Western Transport Strategy had recommended developing the port at Point Wilson rather than Westernport’s Hastings.

A COUNCIL “low carbon growth plan” has helped Geelong tap into $550,000 of Gillard Government funding, the region’s federal MPs have announced.

They said the Government would provide the money as part of an arrangement to pay equal shares of funding for projects included in the plan.

The combined $1.1 million would pay for a new air-conditioning system at National Wool Museum and upgrades to electrical infrastructure at council’s Slashdown and Waterworld.

Corio MP Richard Marles said improving energy efficiency was central to the Government’s clean energy plan “to boost productivity…and move Australia toward a low-carbon future.”

NO MAJOR MOTO-X HERE The community got active last weekend to protest at the recent actions of Motorcycling Australia and the Geelong Motocross Club on the Barrabool motocross track.

More than 60 locals took to the paddocks with tractors, dogs and horses to protest against recently increased activity on the Barrabool motocross site.

“Some families have lived here for generations”, spokesperson Lyn George said. “We’ve put up with huge inconvenience for years, but enough is enough.

The event last weekend was enormous and horrendous for residents and the environment. Motorcycling Australia and the Geelong Motocross Club are ramping up activity and causing havoc”.

She called on the Surf Coast Shire to “deal with the current planning permit application well, by putting reasonable conditions on permits” and on Motorcycling Australia to “come to the table with a reasonable noise management plan”. “This community has been incredibly tolerant but Motorcycling Australia needs to act responsibly and not take advantage of that”, she said. The community also looks to the City of Greater Geelong for support. “It’s not good enough for the City to shift its motocross problem onto Barrabool and walk away”, she said. “The City contributed to the problem by supporting the relocation of the Geelong club and development of the site. It now needs to show some leadership in fixing it”.

Ms George said that the damage caused to the Barrabool Hills “has to be seen to be believed”. “The block is steep and the soil is unstable in places. It’s been ridden on with impunity, and apart from the horrible scar on the Hills the potential for erosion is huge”.

The National Broadband Network is already making a difference to education around Australia

BOYS will be boys, even when they’re men in the kitchen, as a SpringDale Neighbourhood Centre group can attest.

The Thursday morning men’s kitchen group is a raucous, rollicking, fun-filled four hours.

Oh, and some food gets cooked along the way.

Egg, bacon and mushroom pasta followed by chocolate self-saucing pudding was on the menu when Join the Club visited.

“If it looks disorganised, don’t worry about it – this is one of our better days,” quipped one of the 11 kitchen hands.

“We’re here for the camaraderie as well as cooking something nutritious,” another offered.

“We tend to be a little politically incorrect. It gets a bit rowdy but the food gets cooked.

“We do have recipes but we don’t always follow them. As we always say, we don’t make mistakes, we do variations.”

The cooking consisted mainly of one member mixing the pudding and another draining the pasta while the remainder offered advice and support.

“We do actually share jobs out but we tend to work it out as we go along,” said one of the “supervisors”.

“Someone has to buy the ingredients during the week then someone else takes the aprons and tea towels to wash.

“But we’re not as good at washing up after the session.”

Nothing new there.

The men’s kitchen concept has become so popular the centre now has three groups and a waiting list.

“The blokes on the waiting list have to wait for one of us to die before they can get in,” a cook joked.

The men agree they once had little time for cooking during busy working lives.

“But now we really enjoy it. It’s the boys getting together and our wives certainly don’t discourage it.

“My wife always said she was forever slaving over a hot stove, so I had to find out whether it was true.”

Ironically, proceedings pause for morning tea.

No wonder a 45-minute preparation time takes four hours but, as the men happily point out, that includes eating the fruits of their labours.

City ‘surprise’ at permit fast-track

BY CHERIE DONNELLAN STATE Government plans for a fast-tracked permit application service have surprised Geelong’s council, according to a councillor.

Planning Minister Matthew Guy said new legislation would give “straightforward, low-impact planning applications a simpler and faster planning permit process”.

But planning portfolio holder Rod Macdonald said council was “in the dark” about the new process.

“We know nothing more than what was said in the minister’s press release,” Cr Macdonald said.

Mr Guy said the existing process for all applications was “inefficient and costly”.

“Simple planning processes are being undermined by complexity.”

The system would cover applications for minor subdivisions in urban areas, building fences or pergolas and developments in flood-risk areas.

Mr Guy said the system could reduce assessment time from an average of 62 business days to 10.

Tax on the mind KEVIN V Russell’s letter in last week’s Independent said Geelong accountant Anne Lockwood might have an axe to grind and that she was wrong about the impact of the carbon tax on small business.

Most people are scared. No one knows what impact this ill-conceived tax will have on our community.

Mr Russell stated that every country in the OECD had or would introduce carbon trading schemes.

Surely he knows why. It’s one step closer to one global government the world over.

IT’S SAD to see Alan Barron has convinced another reader (Letters, June 15).

My research suggests he is wrong, has proven nothing and that Earth is warming.

Has Goshen Watts read Richard Muller’s research?

Mr Muller does not yet say global warming is manmade but spent two years finding out whether mainstream climate scientists were wrong, concluding they were right about temperatures rising rapidly.

He was a climate skeptic partly funded by denier group Charles Koch Foundation. Mr Muller stated that after his research he could no longer be a sceptic.

Goshen Watts also confused climate with weather.

Weather changes but climate change is long-term.

Also, 2005 can never be used as a base year for such an argument because it is far too recent.

Track to passion STOP the politics over McAdam Park – what about the passion (Independent, March 8)?

My husband rode motorbikes all his life. When

he died of cancer in 2008 Sporting Motor Cycle Club established an annual “quiet achiever” award for someone who looked after the track because they wanted it to remain a great venue.

The battle over McAdam Park has a long history but not as long as the site. Sporting Motor Cycle Club has been custodian of McAdam Park since 1962 and has looked after it well.

Former site owner Clive McAdam simply wished members continue using his land as long as possible.

In 2006 members and hundreds of others donated tiles to the track’s Big Picture Wall to help the club preserve a place for riding. We were also voting for history, which could be lost without the club.

The site was secured when Motorcycling Australia took it over in 2009 but trying to accommodate the different needs of three clubs on one site has seen events cancelled and morale plunge.

Motorcycling Australia is largely responsible for this. Its arrogance and disregard for others and unwillingness to work with them for the good of motorcycling in the region is disgraceful.

One day no one might be left to receive a quiet achiever award.

Legend in waiting UNFORTUNATELY, 2012 was not Gary Ablett senior’s year to be elevated to Legend status in the AFL’s Hall of Fame.

It wasn’t for a lack of applications and recommendations. Football fans know he ranks as the most talented, dynamic player the game has seen.

He will never be forgotten for his 1989 final series when he kicked 27 goals in four matches, including nine in the grand final’s losing side.

What more can you say? Actually, plenty more, like 248 games, 1030 goals, seven times All Australian including captain in 1995, 11 state games for 43 goals, Coleman Medallist three times, Geelong hall of fame member and best and fairest in 1984 and team of the century member for both the Cats and the VFL/AFL. In 2014 he will celebrate 25 years since his record-breaking 1989 finals series.

We will have to wait for this true champion to be elevated to the status of football’s 25th legend.

BY CHERIE DONNELLAN EVEN lead guitarist Josh Crawley seems surprised about the appeal of Graveway Train’s combination of horror-themed country-style music.

“It was a bit of a joke at first but I guess a lot of people like zombies and vampires,” Crawley laughed.

“We seem to attract everyone, though. Punk fans, goth fans, hippy fans, hillbilly fans – it’s a great mix and I love it.”

Graveyard Train will bring its unique musical styling to Geelong this month to release new album Hollow.

Crawley said the band’s previous albums were all about “mummies and werewolves” but the new album was less outlandish.

“In this album we sing more so about natural horrors in day-today life. There are still strong country stylings, though.”

Crawley reminisced about the foundations of the quirky sextet in a North Melbourne record bar where the members listened to the same country blues records.

“I came from a bluegrass background, so I had the country style already but the other guys came from punk bands, so when we came together it was about finding that blend.”

“We’re pretty much always on tour, so we get a lot of chances to spend time together and write.

With six guys, the ideas can get blown up a bit.”

Uno was the band’s favourite downtime game while touring, Crawley revealed.

“It just calms everyone down.

Actually, no, everyone goes psycho,” he laughed.

Graveyard Train organised an international tour in its early days after reading encouraging comments on the band’s YouTube videos.

“We figured there must be

some sort of fans so we just booked it,” Crawley said.

“We did all the work ourselves.

We all chipped in to book shows, get contracts and talk to radio shows, all that.”

Crawley was looking forward to playing in Geelong again.

“Last time we played we had a lunatic who tried to sing every song with us,” he laughed.

“It was hilarious. I hope that guy comes down again.

“We have really dedicated fans in Geelong.”

Graveyard Train plays at The Bended Elbow next Thursday.

2. Heat a lightly greased non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Place teaspoonfuls of mixture in frying pan. Each pikelet should be about 4cm in diameter (2 teaspoonfuls of mixture). Cook for 2 minutes, in batches, allowing plenty of room for spreading. When bubbles appear on the surface, carefully turn. Cook for a further minute until golden.

Remove and set aside to cool.

3. To make raspberry cream, fold crushed raspberries and icing sugar through cream. Serve raspberry cream with pikelets.

Party time for GC mag eelong’s new glossy lifestyle magazine has officially launched into life on the city’s waterfront.

Advertisers mingled with models, story subjects, contributors and staff at the Geelong Coastal Magazine (GC) launch at City Quarter, on The Pier, last week.

The 88-page debut edition arrived in local news agencies and sub-agents last week.

GC, a sister publication to the Geelong Independent, will be published quarterly.

BY ERIC BLAIR he BMW 6 Series marks the getting together of performance and frugality with the added bonus of comfort and luxury. A marriage made in heaven, perhaps.

Our most recent test drive was in the two-door convertible model and it’s the subject of this report.

The 6 Series convertibles are comfortable open-top cruisers if you push the correct button and full-on sports machines if you go for other electronic selections.

The 2012 model is longer, wider and lower than ever before.

We love the fact that it maintains BMW’s long tradition of having a perfect 50/50 weight distribution. You wouldn’t call this big convertible nimble on twisting roads, but it clings to the road with a determination that has to be felt to be believed.

The BMW’s styling is sleek and bold, possibly even aggressive, in its theme.

The aluminium bonnet has a crease running in a V shape back from the BMW badge to the windscreen.

BMW’s designers tell us it mimics the bow wave of a powerboat.

We have been known to raise an eyebrow at a description like that, but cruising around our home area on the Gold Coast there really were times when the big Beemer felt like a powerboat on a smooth river as it powered its way along.

A neat feature is the glass rear window which powers up and down independently of the roof.

Raise it and it reduces wind buffeting, particularly for those travelling in the back seats.

Drop it and the open-air feeling is further enhanced.

Trout released for school holiday angling On the bite BRIAN LONG RAINBOW trout were liberated into a number of local fishing lakes over the past week in preparation for school holidays.

Lara Secondary College students helped release 800 into North Geelong’s Seagull Lake under the guidance of teacher and renowned angler Brenton Hodges.

A further 500 were released into Highton’s St Augustines Lake, while 200 went into each of the lakes at Bannockburn and Lethbridge.

Powerbait, worms and corn will be good baits at each location.

Deep Lake improved, with Powerbait again accounting for the best captures. However, Damian Forbes caught three fish around 1.5kg and lost three others on an Atomic Shad lure in the Muddy Prawn colour.

Ballarat’s Lake Burrumbeet remained discoloured but reports continued filtering through of nice trout captures, the best result on blue bait or glassies.

High water levels resulted in outstanding captures at West Barwon Reservoir. Fred Jacobs worked the surface off the right hand corner of the main wall to land two brown trout around 900g before changing to a shallow-running Rapala for a beauty just over 2kg.

Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, the lake of 1000 casts, produced two brown trout over 3.5kg.

Both were taken on lure from the southern end of the lake where a handful of big redfin were also landed, the biggest over 2kg.

Salmon captures remained confined mostly to deeper rock platforms rather than the normal beach locations. Wye River, Sheoaks and Grey River produced good fishing but Cinema Point was best, with lure out-fishing bait.

Last weekend I fished Fairhaven Beach where good numbers of fish around 1kg were available when the water cleared.

Troy Bennet fished Stony Creek on the high tide for plenty of salmon around 800g. Troy also caught two around 1.5kg, with all his fish falling to small laser lures.

Queenscliff Pier also produced salmon. The run up to high tide was the go, with both metal and soft plastic lures

working.

Anglers who fished after dark at Queenscliff and St Leonards found reasonable numbers of squid. Small, dark coloured jigs were best.

Whiting captures were slower, although bag-limit catches were still taken. Fred McMahon managed his bag twice without too many moves to locate fish.

Cold, blustery weather kept the majority of snapper anglers off the water but the hardy few who put in the late nights on the bay were rewarded with quality fish. Most of the best fish were around 6kg mark and taken on fresh garfish or pilchard.

This weekend the evening tides should be perfect for snapper on the mud directly out from the silos piers, in Stingaree Bay or just off Yarra St. Soft plastics anglers found a variety of fish, with Queenscliff’s cut producing silver

trevally over 1kg on curl tail grubs.

Geelong’s waterfront was slow but a few average pinky snapper were landed along with some nice trevalla, again on Turtleback worms.

Salmon should be one of your best target options in offshore wind this weekend. Fish Fairhaven or Eastern View beaches or the rocks between Lorne and Apollo Bay. Freshwater anglers should look to Lake Bullen Merri where good numbers of trout averaging 1kg can be taken from the shore. Powerbait has been best but small suspending lures have also accounted for their fair share of fish.

Eagles eye final place NEWTOWN and St Mary’s play Geelong Football League’s game of the day at Elderslie Reserve on Saturday.

Newtown is finally living up to big pre-season raps and sits fifth on the ladder, while St Mary’s trails by four points in sixth spot.

This game is vitally important because a win for the Eagles would just about tie up a finals spot, while the Saints will battle to make up the eight point break that a loss would give.

The Eagles have settled into a competitive outfit with the likes of Sandy Robinson, Matt McMahon and Lewis Hyland providing plenty of drive around the ground. Full-forward Jay Bett is marking everything that comes his way and Ryan Gamble is getting into things.

It’s hard to read St Mary’s form over the past three weeks. A victory over the highly rated South Barwon was followed by a loss to St Joseph’s and then last week’s surprise defeat to lowly St Alban’s.

BFL Bellarine Football League throws up three very good games this weekend.

Torquay is proving to be a very good side and sits second on the ladder. The Tigers can further enhance their credentials if they beat Amateurs at Queens Park.

With its back to the wall, Ammos will come out firing.

Down at Ocean Grove the Grubbers host Modewarre in what will be an entertaining game between two sides destined to play finals.

Local Footy FRANK MASON In an upset, the Warriors will take the points.

Drysdale is nipping at the heels of the top five. On Saturday it will be in another close game when it travels down to Anglesea.

The Roos have been disappointing this year and would dearly love to win some respect by stringing some victories together.

GDFL North Geelong and Werribee Centrals take Geelong and District Football League centre stage this weekend in the game of the day at Galvin Park.

Werribee shocked many last weekend when it drew with top placed Thomson, while North Geelong had a solid victory over Belmont Lions.

Victory for the Centurions would see them leapfrog North Geelong on the ladder to take fifth spot.

The Magpies looked sluggish over the past month after an excellent start to the year but maybe they’re regaining mojo.
