‘BREAKTHROUGH’ SET TO SAVE p11 LIVES WORLDWIDE
Juc trio home in on break to reach GromSearch finals Watchdog in HOME-BREAK advantage helped three Jan Juc teenagers reach the finals of a national surfing event last weekend. Zoe Clarke, Tristan Forras and Mickey Robinson led the local contingent of competitors in the Rip Curl GromSearch at Jan Juc, taking on Australia’s best young surfers. Clarke scored the best result, finishing second in the under-16 girls division. Organisers said Clarke hit the lead during the “tense final before Queensland’s Laura Poncini clinched victory with a wave in the dying seconds. Poncini acknowledged her challenger afterward. “It was close. Zoe has been ripping and she took the lead, she said. “I’m just happy that I got that second wave. Forras and Robinson finished third in the boys under-16 and under-14 divisions respectively. Organisers said boys under-16s winner Jackson Baker, of New South Wales, won with the highest-scoring wave of the event in the closing minutes of his final. He scored 9.67 out of 10 for a series of turns on a long-breaking wave. “My granddad passed away while I was at this event as an 11-year-old and I really wanted to do my best in his honour, so I’m really happy that wave came and I could get the Ripping: Jan Juc’s Zoe Clarke rips into her home break on the way to second place in a national Rip Curl score, Baker said. forum drive
BY CHERIE DONNELLAN RESIDENTS will use a Torquay ward candidates forum next week to establish a council watchdog group, according to an organiser of the event. Jan Juc’s Sue O’Shanassy issued a public invitation to join the new 3228 Residents Association at the October 16 forum. The association would ensure the next Surf Coast council upheld “democracy and transparency, she said. Residents attending the forum would be encouraged to question candidates on their policies and political affiliations during a 30-minute question time. “I will be asking about councillors’ political ties, past or present, and whether they intend to run for further office (state or federal), Ms O’Shanassy said. Jan Juc’s Sid Pope will chair the candidates forum, beginning 8pm at Torquay Senior Citizens Centre. “Candidates will get five minutes each to address the community with their policies, and we’ll be very strict about keeping to that time, Mr Pope said. Mr Pope would serve as president of the residents’ association, which was preparing for incorporation, he said. “I’ll be asking candidates to disclose any campaign contributions prior to the election as well as what skills they’d bring to council.
Centre ‘to house 400’ ADVERTISEMENT
Firms making way for new aged care facility petitioned Surf Coast Shire against “noise and dust emissions and damaged roads from Grossmans Garden Supplies and Economix concrete plant, on the corner of Grossmans and Ghazeepore Rds. Councillors voted at their June meeting to relocate both business-
es by March 2013. Ms Neustroski said the businesses’ move was “really important for the presentation of the (Kithbrooke) village. “We’ve got people continually moving into the village and an aged care facility is an appropriate nearby development.
Ms Neustroski expected the centre to “eventually house up to 400 residents. “We have an ageing population in Torquay and we need to accommodate for that. The aged care centre would service new residents while “providing full support to Kithbrooke Park
occupants, Ms Neustroski said. “While the village is independent living, (Kithbrooke residents) can have quite a good level of aged care service close to home. “As specialised services are required for ageing residents, we’ll be able to provide them greater support once the centre is built. Gulf Western Hi-Tech Premium 20W50 5LT

The design of the centre was yet to be determined but would likely be developed once the businesses vacated, Ms Neustoski said. Former Surf Coast mayor and prominent landowner Keith Grossman confirmed the garden supplies business would move to West Coast Business Park on Surf Coast Hwy near Bunnings Warehouse “around February. He expected Economix to also secure a lot in the business park.

BY CHERIE DONNELLAN AN AGED care centre is set to replace two industrial businesses on Torquay’s Grossmans Rd, according to a retirement village’s development manager. Kithbrooke Park’s Rina Neustroski said the centre would help alleviate strain on “limited aged care facilities in Torquay. The Independent reported in May that 59 Park residents had
