A note from the editor

Spring is in the air….

O

ver the years, I’ve tossed back and forth between all seasons as to which one is my most favorite. And, as always, it comes back to Spring. I feel like the sky is bluer than blue. The air is crisp and full of fragrance from all the blooming flowers. The image I have in my head is literally of me skipping through a flower field and taking in all that nature has to offer. It’s shocking how wide we can actually open our eyes when given the freedom to just enjoy all the little things that life has to offer. We often get so inundated with work and life’s obstacles that we fail to recognize all that is good in the world. And, for me, Spring screams open doors for a plethora of opportunities to enjoy all that derives from both mother nature and that of mankind. This season, take the time to disconnect and truly reconnect with others. Limit your time with devices and electronics. Enjoy your favorite beverage in your backyard. An outdoor space that should not only be one you create through inspiration and imagination, but one that you actually long to be in. And, just maybe, it becomes the space you disconnect and reconnect to those that mean most to you. Happy Gardening.

Spring

MARCH Grow like a Pro. It’s totally time for tomatoes.

Start with herbs. Whether it’s in pots or in the garden, now is the time to prepare the soil. Check out Star Note 215 - Growing Herbs in the Desert, for a selection of popular varieties successfully grown here.

An early start ensures a good crop since many varieties will not set fruit in the heat of summer. Plant different types for a continuous supply as harvest dates vary. Some good choices are Early Girl, Patio, Cherry, Roma, Celebrity, Heatwave and Better Boy.

APRIL Plant Warm Season Vegetables!

Melons, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Peppers, Beans and Squash should be planted now. Some folks plant them earlier but these vegetables establish more quickly when the soil is a little warmer.

MAY

Reset your irrigation controller.

Trees and shrubs should be 3 days a week. Best time to water is in the early morning before sunrise.

Don’t forget to feed your plants.

Your evergreen and desert shrubs will need these nutrients through the summer to keep them healthy and hardy. Dr Q’s Tree Shrub & Vine or Desert Plant & Cactus foods are specially formulated for our soils and water. Also, start fertilizing your lawns now to revive them after the cold weather.

Control Insects! Brighten up your landscape

with annual and perennial flowers. Many varieties of colorful bedding plants and 1 gallon color for the warm season are available now!

Refresh your potted plants.

Add new potting soil or transplant overgrown house and patio plants into larger containers with fresh soil. Use a long, slow outdoor watering to leach buildup of fertilizer and other salts from the soil.

Always use the most environmentally safe method possible. For stubborn pests or severe infestations, use Bayer Multi Insect Killer or Rose & Flower Insect Killer for fast control. These products are waterproof and kid/pet safe once spray has dried. For vegetable and herb gardens, use safe products like Whitney Farms Insecticidal Soap for aphids, and BT Worm Killer for worms and caterpillars.

Prepare your Lawn for Summer.

Gardening Calendar Be Proactive.

Use a Pre-emergent like Amaze in your flower beds, or Bonide Crabgrass & Weed Preventer on your lawn to prevent weed seeds from growing. If you have weeds already actively growing, use a contact or translocator herbicide to kill them before they spread any further.

Apply Cedar Mulch

to the surface of your vegetable gardens and flowerbeds as well as around trees and shrubs. Keeps the soil cool, repels insects, and insulates roots.

Be picky about your fertilizer.

Dr Q’s are fortified with all the micro nutrients missing in our Desert soils. Without this balance many of the nutrients will not be available to the plants. Renew mulches as necessary.

Check your irrigation!

Thoroughly inspect your irrigation system for breaks, leaks and improperly working emitters and sprinklers. Shrubs and trees need watering two days a week now, and lawns need three days a week.

Fertilize your Container plants.

Apply a mild fertilizer like Dr. Q’s Houseplant Tonic (10-5-1). Use oversized pots to surround your plant containers and keep them from overheating. Watch water needs carefully and adjust as temperatures rise.

Prune desert plants

Lightly to reduce stress from overgrown foliage and seed pods. Be careful not to expose tender trunks and branches to full sun if they have been well-shaded previously.

ONE WHO PLANTS A GARDEN, PLANTS HAPPINESS

SUSTAINABILITY IN YOUR LANDSCAPE BY CRYSTAL GWALTNEY

I

f you’re trying to reduce the size of your carbon footprint, or if you just want to save money and time in your landscape, there are plenty of ways to do both of those things. Here are just 5 easy things you can do to move toward a more sustainable garden or landscape.

1. Take care of what your already have

• Start with your largest investment, your trees. If you don’t know what you have, bring in a sample to any Star Nursery and we’ll help you identify it and give you some advice to keep it as healthy as possible. • Healthy plants are inexpensive to keep up vs sick plants that will end up being a financial drain involving lots of labor, chemicals, and disappointment. A little prevention goes a long way.

2. Add diversity in planting

• Plan on something for all season that will show interesting color, texture or flowers. • Think about wildlife food and habitat. If you’re looking to create a haven for pollinators or birds, you’ll want to opt for plants that produce flowers or berries. • Lose less plants to disease or insect infestation. When you plant a monoculture (only one type of plant), you risk losing your entire landscape in the event of a pest infestation. • Create balance for natural predators.

3. Go easy on the chemicals

• Even organic solutions to a pest problem can create an imbalance in an ecosystem and make a small problem into a larger, more expensive problem. • Always try to take the least toxic approach first, wait for a response and then reevaluate and see if further intervention is necessary. • Be prepared to make a tough decision. If you have a pest infestation, I may be more beneficial to remove the plant(s) entirely and replace it instead of babysitting them with chemicals.

4. Reach for groundcovers that aren’t grass or rocks

• There are plenty of less thirsty options that can give you the same, if not better effect. • Save money and time on fertilizing and mowing with plants like Australian Racer (Myoporium parviflolium) or Dwarf Periwinkle (Vinca minor). • Reduce heat island effect that a lot of people end up with when converting their lawns to xeriscape.

5. Use shade to your advantage

• Think twice about where you’ll be placing your shade tree in you yard. A well-placed tree could shade your house and reduce heat loads on your walls, saving you on energy costs during the hottest months of the year. Plant a deciduous tree in that same sweet spot and you could reap the warming rewards from the sun in the winter months.

pringtime in the desert is usually brought to life with the blooming of the Texas Mountain Laurel, in purple and the Cassias (Sennas) in bright yellow. These two plants are among the first bloomers and a sure sign that spring has arrived! The Texas Mountain Laurel can be grown as a large shrub or a small tree. It is an evergreen plant, with bright glossy green leaves. The clusters of purple flowers that appear, have a distinct aroma of grape Kool-Aid or grape bubble gum. The Cassias (or Sennas as known to some) include the Green Cassia, Feathery Cassia and Sickle Leaf Cassia. These desert shrubs are hardy to 15°F-20°F depending on the variety. The

Peach Prunus Persica

bright yellow blooms are quite showy. Not to be out done, a couple of trees will also be blooming early. The Flowering Plum, a small tree, will be decorated with pink flowers right before the purple leaves emerge. The Flowering Pears (Aristocrat, Bradford, and Chanticleer) are the ornamental type, not bearing fruit, will be covered in white flowers. Fruit trees are also prolific bloomers. Different varieties will have different flowers. Some are simple and delicate looking, where others are full and vividly colorful. There will be the whites of apple trees, pale pinks of apricots, and the darker pinks of some of the peaches. Redbud Trees (Eastern, Mexican, and Western) will be showing their delicate magenta blooms too. They will

flower before leaves appear. Gaining in popularity, these trees prefer some afternoon shade in our climate, best planted with north or east exposure. A few other plants that will be amongst the first to show off will be the Valentine Bush, in bright red tubular flowers, and the Bush Morning Glory, a mounding silvery-gray leaved bush that will be covered in white flowers. The Creeping Rosemary will be adding hints of blue with its flowers. Don’t forget the Gopher Plant, with its spiky gray-green foliage and yellow clusters of flowers. The Indian Hawthorns (Pink Lady, Pinkie, and White) will

Lavender Lavandula

display their colors usually through the end of April to mid-May. The deciduous lilacs, spiraea and forsythia exhibit their colors about the same time, but may vary by climate zone. Varieties of lavender push up their purple spikes early and last all season. As it starts to warm up a little more, and the days get a little longer, the wildflowers will start popping. These will include the Parry’s Penstemon (pink), Firecracker Penstemon (Red), Globe Mallow (peachy-salmon), and the Desert Marigold (yellow). A few more plants that will be blooming soon: lavender, irises, sages, cacti, ocotillos, Palo Verde trees, plus many more. All of this early spring color is an added benefit of living the desert!

Current Vibe: Living Coral By: Crystal Gwaltney

We know, it’s everywhere and we love it too! The color authority, Pantone, has spoken and we couldn’t be more excited for this year’s color, “Living Coral”. Here are three easy ways to incorporate this warm, bright hue into your landscape or garden! 1. Coral Autumn Sage (Salvia greggii “Coral”) This desert adapted beauty grows to about 3’x3’ and can take full sun. It’s the perfect addition to any desert landscape. Bonus: it’s a hummingbird magnet. You’re welcome. 2. Coral Firecracker Fountain (Russelia equisetiformis) Growing to 4’x4’, this shrub delivers a shower of tube-shaped flowers for most of the year. Pair this with the deep purple of Purple Heart (Tradescantia pallida ‘Purpurea’) or the electric green of Angelina Sedum (Sedum rupestre ‘Angelina’). 3. Double Coral Drift Rose (Rosa ‘Drift Double Coral’) For the rose lovers out there, or the undiscovered rose lovers, this one couldn’t get any easier. This low-growing and compact rose bush features clusters of tiny blooms. It’s a great option to fill in a foreground area or put it in a container for a fuss free patio addition. Ladybugs

A Beneficial Insect In your Garden.

Ladybugs are also known as lady beetles or even ladybird beetles. In European countries they are referred to as “ladybirds.” Adult lady beetles are round beetles measuring no more than 3/8” in length. They can be red, orange, or black in color with or without spots. Their larvae are said to look somewhat like an alligator in its shape with tiny spiked projections and orange striping on its blue or black body. Ladybug eggs are yellowish or whitish, oval-shaped and laying in clusters. Ladybugs, or lady beetles, are considered a beneficial bug which helps rid an area of cropdamaging aphids, mealybugs and other destructive insect pests. The adult ladybugs feed on these insects. They also lay their eggs among the aphids or other prey so the emerging larvae can feed on the insects upon hatching. The only time they are considered to be “pests” to people is in the fall when the weather gets cooler, and the Asian lady beetles enter homes and other buildings in large numbers in search of a warm place to overwinter. Vacuuming these beetles

and discarding the bag may be the most effective method of removing these insects from your home. Remember, we don’t want to remove them from fields, orchards or gardens since they are so beneficial. Many species of ladybugs are found throughout the United States, although one, the Asian lady beetle, was more recently introduced into the United States. Ladybugs are generally found in agricultural fields, orchards and gardens where their favorite foods, aphids, insects and mealybugs can be found. In the Fall, ladybugs will gather in large numbers in places where they will spend the winter - usually under rocks, leaves, old fallen trees and any other location sheltered from the weather. They will sometimes aggregate on the outside of a house in the warmth. If Ladybugs venture into homes, they may appear to be somewhat of a pest to homeowners, but do not harm them, since they are so beneficial. Take them outside when you find them inside of your home. You may want to seal or caulk cracks and around windows to prevent them from entering your home.

We're Mad About Mint! 7 Uses For Fresh Mint

1.

Attracts good bugs, while repelling the bad ones! Peppermint and spearmint are natural repellents for bad bugs in your garden such as, cabbage moths, ants, and mosquitoes. Due to the abundant production of pollen and nectar, they encourage visits from beneficial insects like the honeybee.

2.

Calm an upset stomach. A good cup of peppermint tea has been known to alleviate indigestion, abdominal cramping and gas.

3.

Soothe a sunburn. Make a strong cup of

peppermint tea, chill it in the refrigerator for a few hours and apply it to affected area with a cotton ball.

4.

Boost the flavor of food and

beverages. Mint can be added to cocktails, flavored water, or tea for a refreshing twist. Mint also adds great flavor to roasted vegetables and deserts, like mint chocolate chip cookies!

5.

An amazing companion to

a variety of garden plants and vegetables due to its pest repelling nature. Keep the following plants safe from harmful insects by growing mint nearby: Beets, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Lettuce, Onion, Peas, Roses, Squash, and Tomatoes.

6.

Great for container gardening. Mint plants are zealous growers and can be unruly once planted. Limiting mint growth to a container is a
