Brandon Roelike makes solid contact with the ball, making him a respected hitter in the Saints’ line-up. He and others make it difficult to retire the Saints without giving up runs.

Look to the Elrosa Saints to continue as the powerhouse in the Stearns County League. The team’s offense can score on just about everyone, and their pitching and defense limit runs scored by opponents. The offensive core has experienced hitters like Jackson Peter, .382, Brandon Roelike, .300, Kevin Koehler, .390, and Matt Schmitz, .250, who had 10 or more hits. The addition of Luke Van Beck, .318, added to the prowess, and Will Van Beck, .297, showed his potential with 11 hits. The team scored every way possible and had 12 RBIs from James Koehler. That cadre of hitters helped overcome the missing bats of Cody Eichers and Ethan Vogt. Injuries and illness forced them to miss much of the season shortened by the coronavirus pandemic. As it was, Elrosa outscored opponents 71-55 as they finished 10-4 on the year. The team’s ERA was 3.47, and their pitching staff again has potential to be among the best in the league.

Spring Hill Chargers

The Spring Hill Chargers, probably more than any other team, felt the effects of the coronavirus pandemic last year. Just as the team was beginning to do well in the post season, they had to step out of the season because of COVID-19. This year may be a year of redemption for them. With the Chargers’ emphasis on defense and pitching, opponents have to work to beat the Chargers. The strong defense comes from experienced infielders and talented outfielders. Up the middle, Erik and Jamie Terres are among the area’s best combinations in field and at the plate. Offensively, they combine for over 32 hits and are always a threat to score when on base. The outfield features one of the league’s best centerfielders in Owen Meyer.

Wishing everyone good luck and lots of fun!

The Greenwald Cubs hold the promise of a good season in the potential of their young players. That youth also brings questions and challenges. The team needs to put together complete games. There are times when the team hits well only to give up too many runs. Their pitchers have, at times, kept teams in check, but the offense does not always deliver. They also need to find consistency on offense and some depth on the mound. Kegan Stueve hit well for the team last year, but there were few others who had his consistency. A real bright spot for the team has been the continued improvement of Tyler Hoffman on the mound. He finished among the area leaders for innings pitched and had a respectable ERA. Hopefully, Brett Engelmeyer, Tyler Engelmeyer and Ethan Ettel should do more pitching this season. Defensively, the team has a good outfield built around the play of Tyler Engelmeyer. The infield improved with the combination of Levi Feldewerd, Stueve and Ryan Kraemer. Greenwald will be

GREENWALD CUBS more experienced than last year. Last season, a number of players had their first real taste of amateur ball, and sometimes they were overpowered by the experience of established players. The team will be challenged, but they have the talent to meet those challenges and have a good year. New Munich SilverStreaks

The New Munich SilverStreaks are never out of a game. The team has the players to ignite a rally from any point in the lineup, and the roster comes through with key hits. Will Funk is the player most think of when it comes to New Munich, but is just one on the roster who consistently delivers. Adam Strangler has a proven record of getting on base and driving in runs. Jacob Hinnenkamp has developed into a player who will get hits in clutch, and Ty Reller has more than once had momentum building hits for the SilverStreaks. Reller is a pitcher with the team, continuing a tradition of dominance at that position. Jim Thill remains a durable pitcher and effectively holds batters in check. They are helped by the experience of Nick Strangler behind the plate. Defensively, the team is solid across all positions and rarely fails to support their pitchers or protect the offensive lead. There are teams which can and will defeat New Munich, but every team knows that when they face New Munich, they are facing a quality team.

Spring Hill from page 3 Tony Revermann, Austin Schoenberg and Carter Tschida can throw a lot innings. With their talents, and the experience of catcher Nathan Terres calling games, they will keep the Chargers in games. Reagan Nelson earned three wins in relief last season. O ff e n s i v e l y, Spring Hill can score with power or by manufacturing runs. They score often. All but three of their players scored and three had over 10 runs. With younger players such as Ben Welle, Reagan Nelson and Luke Dehmer gaining experience last year, the Chargers will be challenging all teams they face this year.

Farming Flames

The Farming Flames will be a team to beat in the area, and it will not be easy to do. Within the club, there is an established core of veterans, and younger players are ready to step up and shine. Offensively, the team is multifaceted. In last year’s shortened season, five players – Aaron Eiynck, Cody Fourre, Ethan Navratil, Isaac Nett and Nick Mergen – claimed home runs. Nett consistently gets on base and scores runs. Nett scored 11 runs, and he can credit Navratil, Tylor Schroeder, Fourre, Eiynck and others in the lineup. The Flames are deep and consistent in their hitting. Schroeder proved to be the team’s workhorse on the mound, striking out batters at key moments but generally getting the batters to hit to his defenders. Adam Winkels provides another reliable arm as does Navratil. The Flames started hot last year and lost some close games. This year, they could very well keep winning all year long. PHOTO BY HERMAN LENSING

Pitcher Adam Winkels is one in a trio of moundsmen the Flames can depend on to keep them in games. He was one of four Flames to earn wins last season.

By consensus, the St. Martin Martins baseball squad has the best pitcher and possibly the best pitching staff in the Stearns County League. Built around the pitching of Scott Lieser (.91 ERA, 56 strikeouts, 49.1 innings), the Martins are tough to score

ing that attack are the talents of Jaylyn Arceneau, Kyle Lieser, Bryan Schlangen, Matthew Schlangen and Nathan Schlangen. Kyle Lieser provides the power in that attack, hitting five home runs. With others consistent at getting on base, St. Martin is always a threat to score. The talent is not confined to experienced players. Seniors and juniors come from the Albany and Paynesville programs to contribute to the team’s success. The Martins did at times strike out but overall were always in games. This year, they will be a team that is hard to beat and fun to watch.

Emerson gets batters out (3.9 ERA across 32.1 innings) by having batters hit playable balls or by striking batters out. Dalton Thelen (2.25 ERA) is effective in relief, and Schleicher is a good starter who earned three wins. Offensively, the team has a lineup that makes it difficult for opponents to keep them in check. Cole Schmitz, because of power, (three doubles and three home runs) might be the best known of the lineup. There are others who cause problems for opposing pitchers. Justin Schroeder has a .410 average with 16 hits. Dalton Thelen had 12 hits, and eight Royals finished with at least 10 hits. The club will be missing some players early on because of collegiate play. But when all are assembled, the team will be tough to beat.

The rearranged Victory League format means it will be a little tougher for Avon Lakers to win some games. It also means other teams will have to defeat Avon to record a good season. The Lakers have all the parts for a successful team. Good hitters appear throughout the starting line-up and off the bench. Annually, the Lakers have leaders in batting average and RBI production. Last year, the top hitters were Caleb Curry, .421, and Josh Becker, 432; Carter Holthaus had 14 RBIs, and Cole Fuecker had 11 more. The Lakers also have a strong tradition of good pitchers, which Matt Pichelmann only added to last year. St. Wendel Saints

320-774-1999 301 34th Ave S, Ste 2 • Waite Park, MN

The St. Wendel Saints are hoping to continue their rebound ride of last year as they went from being cellar-dweller to contending for regional berth. They have the players to go further. Player-manager Tyler Huls led by example hitting .364, and Pete Schumer was a .311 hitter. Others who delivered in the eight-game season last year were Jack Opatz, Jake Ethen and Jordan Gombos. Ethen is always a threat to put the ball in play and struck out only three times last year. Where the team will have to improve is hitting throughout the lineup. Too often the Saints had a goahead runner on base only to see the threat die from the lack of key hits. The team’s pitching was built around the arms of Pete Schumer and Jack Opatz. Both threw a lot of innings which kept St. Wendel in the game until the late innings.

watch as misplays are not all that common. The Lakers will have to adjust as some veterans, such as Taylor Holthaus, Jonathan (Putter) Harlander and Will Kleinschmidt, opted to retire. Still, Avon has the depth to absorb those changes, and with the addition of young talent, this baseball squad will be a force in the VLSouth/West.

Freeport Black Sox The Freeport Black Sox should be an improved team this year, even with the quality of competition they face. Freeport plays in the Victory League-South/West division. They will face powerhouses such as Avon and Sobieski. Buckman is also on the schedule. Last year, there were some adjustments as a few new people came into the lineup. That lineup showed potential. Tyler Hemker mixed in well offensively with the proven talents of veterans Carter Sawyer and Jake Braegelmann. Bryan Benson added 12 more hits. The team needs to improve on getting hits with men on base. Braegelmann showed he has the potential to do that. The pitching staff used lot of different arms with Cody Rose, Taylor Erickson and Craig Meyer logging the most innings. Freeport had some nice games at the end of last year. That should serve as a launch for the team this season.

combined to strike out 58 batters in 65.1 innings. Those strikeouts and the relief pitching of Chris Belling helps keep opponents from scoring a lot of runs on the Steves. The offense, led by Mat Meyer, Bo Schmitz and Tony Schmitz, can match whatever runs opponents score. Meyer and Tony Schmitz are proven .300 hitters, and Bo Schmitz hit over .400 last year. They are not the only ones who get on and push runners across the plate. Chris Belling, with a .500 average, and Mat Meyer hit over .300., also drove in runs. The Steves will face quality competition as the Victory League season unwinds, but they have the talent to handle it.

Collin Eckman had six home runs. The area leader board has at least one Ski in almost every offensive column. The offense alone will win games. The Skis also have the pitchers to keep opponents from putting up a lot of runs. Three of their pitchers, Alex Gwost, Tyler Jendro and Dusty Parker, threw over 20 innings last year. Alex Gwost had a microscopic

.70 ERA. And, six of their pitchers had ERAs below 3. The Skis will be favored in almost all their games this year. They could also be a great team to watch from the stands. Victory League fans will see more teams BY HERMAN LENSING | STAFF WRITER

There is a different look to the Victory League format and schedule this season. First, the Foley Lumberjacks joined the league to fill the vacancy created by the departed Aitkin team. Sobieski will play as a Class C team after spending two years playing in Class B. Following the 2020 season, the league has restructured. Instead of four divisions, there will be two. – VL-South/West: Avon, Flensburg, Freeport, Opole, Randall, Sobieski, St. Stephen, St. Wendel, Swanville and Upsala. – VL-North/East: Buckman, Foley, Ft. Ripley, Nisswa, Pierz Brewers, Pierz Bulldogs, Pierz Lakers, Royalton and St. Mathias. Each team will play all teams in their division. In addition, Avon, Freeport, Opole, St. Stephen and St. Wendel will face Buckman, Pierz Brewers, Pierz Bulldogs, Pierz Lakers and Royalton. Foley, Ft. Ripley, Nisswa and St. Mathias will face Flensburg, Randall, Sobieski, Swanville and Upsala. It come out to a 13- or 14-game season. Following the regular season, there will be divisional playoffs to see which teams qualify for the Region 8C tournament. In the first round of playoffs, the seventh seed and 10th seed will face off as will the eighth and ninth seed. The winners advance to an eight-team double elimination playoff to determine the top four seeds from each division. They qualify for the Region 8C tournament. The regular season champion of each division automatically qualifies for Region 8C play.

Good luck to all area teams!

Favored teams still need to win BY HERMAN LENSING | STAFF WRITER

There are new teams in the amateur baseball leagues which will grace the field in 2021. In the Victory League, most see Sobieski as the favored team. The Skis return to Class C play after two years of playing in Class B. Well-rounded in all aspects of the game, the Skis play one of the best games in the area. But, they will not go unchallenged. While Avon is undergoing a bit of change, they are still the Lakers and can compete with anyone. Buckman is another that cannot be overlooked.

Like Avon, the Billygoats are coming off an appearance at state. So too is the other favored team of Ft. Ripley. Randall, which had a nice run to reach state last year, might well be a spoiler, and they have the personnel to be a dominate team. There are others who may just challenge the top runners. Nisswa, St. Stephen, Upsala, Pierz Bulldogs and Freeport were all mentioned as teams not to be taken lightly. The 2020 season also had flashes of promise from St. Mathias, Opole, Pierz Brewers,

Royalton, Pierz Lakers and St. Wendel. Swanville and Flensburg both had upsets, and everyone is waiting to see how well Foley will adapt to the league. In the Stearns County League, almost everyone mentions one team as the team to beat – and for a very traditional reason. The St. Martin Martins have Scott Lieser who is thought to be the best pitcher in the SCL. The team, which went to state, also has hitting defense. However, nobody is conceding a title to the Martins. A few managers said in the SCL in any game, anyone can beat another team. Elrosa is pointed to as a team that could also come to the top and is expected to do just that in the SCLNorth. Last year, the matchup between the Martins and Elrosa at St. Martin might have been the best game of the SCL season. Richmond is expected to give both runs for

their money. The team has the pitchers and hitters to take charge of their games. Farming will also have a say in how the season unfolds. Fans have talked for a few years about the potential of the Flames and how they are the team of

the future. The future could very well be this year. They have the veterans needed to stabilize the team and the youthful talent win the games. Lake Henry came around late in the year, and from the SCL-North, New

Munich is mentioned as a dark horse to come out on top. Meire Grove or Spring Hill cannot be discounted, and Roscoe and Greenwald have the ability to upset teams. In the Resorters League, Sauk Centre, Long Prairie, Alexandria and Osakis should be battling for top spots. That said, it would not do to overlook the traditions Urbank-Parkers Prairie, Ashby and Carlos in putting together good teams. Kensington always has the potential to upset another team. Speculation of who will finish first is a wideopen field. The fun comes from seeing the games The play of Freeport’s Isaac Sawyer (11) and St. Wendel’s Richmond and Farming contests almost always have a bearing on the Stearns County played and who is the best Jack Opatz are among the reasons those teams cannot League-South standings. Defense by Farming’s Tylor Schroeder and base-running by team on that day. be counted out in a Victory League-South/West game. Richmond’s Carter Thelen create exciting plays.

The Sauk Centre Titans will be a team to watch in the Resorters League and the local area. Titans pitchers Dylan Haskamp and Shane Trattles can keep batters off the bases and in the dugout with their strikeouts. Playing behind them is a solid defense that rarely gives opponents second chances. Offensively, Sauk Centre has the hitters who can create long innings and put runners across the plate. Andrew Primus and Haskamp consistently reach base then wait for the bats of Andrew Rousslange, Brian Beuning and Andrew Primus to drive them in. That combination seldom fails to produce runs and a win. Like all teams, the Titans will be rebounding from a year of coronavirus pandemic issues and protocols. They have the talent to do so and should remain a pace setter in the Resorters League.

Amateur Baseball: Resorters League | Page 21

Amateur baseball proved games could be played BY HERMAN LENSING STAFF WRITER

It was amateur baseball that showed games could be viewed by the public during the coronavirus pandemic. Admittedly, COVID-19 brought about a shortened season, limited crowds and a need for reminders to slow the spread of the virus, but the games were played nonetheless. The Stearns County League garnered a bit of statewide attention June 12, 2020, when it started playing games. Games were carried on radio stations, and news organizations from across the state showed up to talk to fans, coaches and managers. There were varying opinions of playing organized sports during the pandemic. One view held it was too soon and resuming play should only come after the pandemic ended. Another view was to play the game but not allow fans. A third view held that the game had to be played as a protest to COVID-19 protocols. Reactions to the protocols varied. Some refused to wear masks, and in at least one case, a person refused to purchase concessions when the servers did wear them. Some fans observed social distancing, leaving games if their decision to do so was not respected. Others said they were not going to come until social distancing requirements were removed. Still, others made it a point to ignore social distancing all together. PHOTO BY HERMAN LENSING

It was not uncommon to see concessions delivered by masked servers during the 2020 baseball season. Ruth Lieser of St. Martin was among those who donned a mask.

Greenwald manager Nick Rademacher (left) visits with columnist Pat Reusse June 12, 2020, when the Cubs played in St. Martin. The June games in the Stearns County League drew attention from across the state.

No matter the opinions related to COVID-19, fans came to see the games being played because they enjoy amateur baseball, something Minnesotans have done for well over a century. “It’s fun to play baseball again,” said Colton Meyer, of Meire Grove, after the June 14, 2020, game with Elrosa. “The sun was shining. The wind was blowing. It was fun to be back. Even with rules, it is still baseball.” At every game, there was some talk of when the protocols would go away. While the COVID-19 protocols did not go away, the games continued to be played on the field. Fans and players adapted. In places concessions were available, people watched with beers and burgers. The protocols made the season different from previous years, but as Meyer said, it was still baseball. There were some great games and some blowouts, great plays and heart-breaking errors. Veterans showed why they had become respected players, and

younger players stepped into roles of team leadership. Diamonds were worked on, regional and state tournaments were held, and champions were crowned. Through it all, COVID-19 was never far from the minds of fans and players. Games were postponed or canceled because of pandemic concerns. Locally, Spring Hill had to pull out of the Region 15C tournament because of positive COVID-19 test results. The state tournament was moved because of concerns of crowd and community safety. In spite of those challenges, the tradition that is Minnesota amateur baseball continued. One of the interesting aspects was that the state games, for the first time, were covered by television broadcasts. The season concluded on Labor Day weekend. From the local leagues, Avon, St. Martin, Lake Henry, Foley, Buckman, Randall, Ft. Ripley and Alexandria played in the state Class C tournament. When the final games were played, fans left the game knowing the season ended. A few wondered if high school, college and other sports could make adaptions and let their games go on too. Amateur baseball, they pointed out, had shown it could be done.

Other Resorters Leagues Alexandria Black Sox Alexandria could have a very good team. Brett Savelkoul, Carter Stockert, Chris Curry, Eric Carlsen, Mitch Thompson and Travis Kruger all had 10 or more hits last year. Their defense and pitching turned in four shutouts in their 9-4-1 season. Ashby A’s The A’s, with a tradition going back to 1890, have generally been a competitive team. That should continue this year. Carlos Cougars Hunter Schoenrock, Isaac Peterson and Blake Radtke

Victory League Schedule

provide offensive punch. Peterson, Radtke, Clarke Comer and Braden Reisdorf provide pitching. Kensington Norseman Kevin Jenks, Devin Nelson and Alan Strom will all provide leadership. Blake Anderson helps the Norseman pitching staff. Long Prairie Long Prairie is in almost every game they play. Most of their games are decided by one or two runs. Michael Heid, Zachery Miller and Mitchell Heid are among the hitters who put the ball in play. Ted Grey and Trent Johnson lead the

pitching squad. Osakis Carter Rost, Drew Fearing and Luke Imdieke have shown they can hit. Imdieke can get the hits needed to drive in runs. Urbank-Parker’s Prairie Bombers The Bombers have a tradition of offensive punch and good defense. They should be effective in Resorters League play. Hunter Arnold, Sam Haley and Hunter Haggenmiller help with the hitting. The pitching of Andrew Johnson, Haggenmill and Levi Arnold is a strength for the team.
