Elrosa went through some adjustment pains last year, but showed they have the players to be a good team. With Payton Van Beck, the club has a young but proven pitcher who can keep batters off base. Drafted by Spring Hill for post-league play, he was a factor in that club’s regional and state run. He struck out 63 batters in 69 innings. Veteran Ethan Vogt again proved durable, leading the team with 46.2 innings. Offensively, Kevin Kuefler, .385; Jackson Peter, .346, and Derek Wiener, .311 had good years. They often got on base, but there were not always hits to drive them in.

Defensively, Elrosa has a good corps of outfielders, and shortstop Matt Schmitz holds his own in that position. The defense rarely hurts itself during games. The Saints showed last year they could take on and play with good teams. This year, they may well come out on top of a few more of those contests.

Payton Van Beck emerged as one of the strong, steady pitchers for Elrosa and in the SCL last year. He struck out 48 for Elrosa and finished with over 60 strikeouts after being drafted.

Greenwald will have a new manager this year as Doug Welle returns to the Cubs’ dugout. Welle inherits a team with some solid potential in proven players at good key positions. Joining Welle in the coaching duties are Dan Hopfer and Chuck Winter, who played and managed the team in the past years. Pitcher Tyler Hoffman has shown durability and competitiveness during his career; and catcher Tyler Thomas is experienced at that position. Infielder Kegan Stueve and outfielder Tyler Engelmeyer are both assets to the offense. The Cubs have hitters, but need them to come through with runners on base. Engelmeyer, Ryan Kraemer and Thomas were all at 10 or more hits last season. Showing a lot of promise for the team are Ethan Ettel, utility player and pitcher, and Brett Engelmeyer, pitcher/ infielder. With both hav-

Another showing offensive potential is Henry Braun, who hit .333 in limited play last season and played well in the Legion program. Greenwald showed potential against some quality teams last year, staying with Lake Henry, Meire Grove and Spring Hill. This year, with maturity of their talent, Greenwald may surprise a few fans. Swing in and see us after the game
New Munich could set the pace on SCL-North diamonds this year. They have proven veterans with the experience to win joined by a contingent of talented, young players who want to win. The mixture is found throughout the line-up. The SilverStreaks had 13 players with at least 10 hits last year. Ty Reller’s 21 hits led the team; and Adam Stangler, Will Funk and Carter Birr all had at least 13 hits. With that group getting on base, the bats of Logan Funk, Caden Sand and Nick Stangler drove in runs. The SilverStreaks outscored opponents 109-88 last year, and it wasn’t only because of offense. Reller is one of the top pitchers in the league with a 2.52 ERA across 78.2 innings. His 83 strikeouts are among the best in the area. The team for years has counted on the arm of Jim Thull to help out, and has good relief in Nolan Stang and Will Funk. Defensively, the team is solid and has players who are fun to watch at any position. Those elements all started to blend last year, and should continue toward a good season this year. Roscoe has the elements to have a good team. Russell Leyendecker set the tone for the team with his hitting, .377, and pitching, 36 ip, and others
picked up on his example. Devon Savage hit at .438, joining Leyendecker as a 20+ hitter. Savage, a versatile player, played well in the infield and outfield. Jordan Schleper, a solid first baseman, also hit over .300. He and Brandon Schleper also share mound duties. The hope is that Josh Mackedanz, who missed last year with a broken wrist, will return to form and help the pitching staff. Those veterans are expected to lead what is essentially a young team. The Rangers have 12 players between the eighth and 12th grade on the roster. Some of them, such has Max Athmann, Jaxson Leyendecker and Austin Pauls, already have starting experience with the team. There is also talent with newcomers Parker Brezinka, Ryan Thomas, Mitch Athmann and Charlie Stang.

St. Martin is a fun team to watch, and people have learned to watch to the end of the game. With a solid defense built around catcher/outfielders Bryan Schlangen and Zach Moritz, outfielder Matthew Schlangen and shortstop Kyle Lieser, the team rarely gives up a lot of runs. Last season, no team scored more than four runs on them. That was in no small part due to their pitching staff. Led by Scott Lieser, the Martins pitchers allowed 43 runs in 22 games; seven of those wins were shutouts. Scott Lieser was the pitcher of the year in the SCL with a 0.56 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 95.2 innings. That said, the rest of the staff, too, is solid. Ben Schroeder, 50 strikeouts in 57 innings, Bryan Schlangen, 28 strikeouts in 29.2 innings, and Kyle Lieser, 14 innings 21 strikeouts, all do well in spot starts and relief. Where the Martins will have to improve is their offense. The team, overall, is young and sometimes started five or six high schoolers. With some playing time, they should do better this year. Kyle Lieser, Tanner Arceneau and Bryan Schlangen are always a threat to get on. Playing small ball moves them around for runs. In the state tournament, the Martins earned a 1-0 win without the benefit of a hit. The young Martins learned a lot in amateur play last year. Outfielder Nolan Rueter, infielders Brady Goebel and Ryan Messer and outfielder Avery Schmitz all show grow-

The Royals ended their 2021 season in the state tournament. They should again be a team to reckon with in the Stearns County League. The team has proven veterans with catcher-first baseman Cole Schmitz, first baseman-dh Justin Schroeder and pitcher DJ Schleicher being a solid core around which the team is built. Offensively, the Royals can score on most teams they play. Chase Aleshire (.316, 25 hits), Brady Klehr (.393, 11 hits) and Dalton Thelen (.339, 21 hits) are often on base for the bats of Schmitz and Mason Primus to deliver RBI hits. Richmond has the power to produce runs, shown by their 15 home runs, five by Chase Aleshire. They also got into position to score with 17 steals, seven by Thelen. Keeping Richmond in games are the pitching talents of Schleicher, 2.40 ERA; Klehr, 2.20

Tate Lange not only fields the first base position, but is a productive hitter for the Bears. His .467 average translated into 14 hits and seven runs last year.
Being young and talented is a double-edged dilemma for Opole. On the one hand, some of those youngsters have proven they have the ability and potential to play against VL opponents. Drew Lange started
at second much of the year and played well. Dierks Opatz showed promise offensively. Dominic Hoikka and Hunter Boeckermann both showed they can play outfield.

St. Stephen Steves
St. Stephen may be an emerging power in the VLSouth/West. They have the players needed to challenge Avon, Randall, Upsala and Sobieski. The offense has power in the bats of Mathew Meyer and Tony Schmitz. Meyer, who had 40 hits last year, slammed out 12 doubles and 11 home runs. Schmitz has only continued to improve over the years and counted five home r u n s among his 22 hits. They are just part of a team which collected 239 hits last year and had six players with 20-plus hits. Some of those are familiar, and respected by the Steves’ opponents. Jake Schelonka followed Meyer’s .430 average with a .406 average. Bo Schmitz and Jake Guggenberger both hit over .300, and the team hit for a .295 average. Scoring runs is not a problem for the Steves. The team’s pitching can protect most leads its offense creates. Chris Belling, Nick Krippner, Derek Durant, Schelonka and Landon Lunser were fairly balanced while doing the bulk of the pitching. They did give up hits, but also struck out over 160 batters. The Steves, whose season ended in state, showed they are ready to take the next step. Who is SCLʼs all-time home run leader? BY HERMAN LENSING STAFF WRITER
Last season, at a Stearns County League game, a question was asked that stopped conversation and started guessing. Which person had hit the most home runs in their Stearns County League career? That was quickly followed by: What was the number? Has anyone ever hit over 100 in a career? It can be said at least one player has hit 100 home runs in SCL games during his career. There might be more. Finding a definite answer can be challenging. Some records have been lost, or some games never reported. All that can be found is the minimum number of documented home runs hit by any one player. Still, looking through a number of documented home runs hit in regular-season, playoff, regional and state games (including those hit as a draftee), one player stands out: Jeff Schmitz, a left-handed hitter who played with St. Martin from 1981-2000; and 2001-07 at Lake Henry. A 1983 graduate at Albany Area High
School and a member of the 1986-88 St. Cloud State University baseball team, Schmitz was always known as a consistent and powerful hitter. Available information shows he had at least 103 home runs playing for Stearns County League teams. “My natural swing produced fly balls, and I liked to swing aggressively,” Schmitz said. “I like to hit in St. Martin, Richmond and Roscoe because the wind tends to blow out.” Others with more than 75 known home runs are: 89-Jon Dold, Richmond; 81Marc Schmitz, Roscoe; 80Pat Illies, Elrosa and Lake Henry (drafted for New Munich); and 78-Pat Nathe, New Munich. Those players, and most but not all in the top 25, played much of their careers when metal bats were allowed. Metal bats came in the 1973 season and were part of the amateur game until 2001. Any check of available records shows there was a surge in home runs in those years. “Metal bats don’t break. So, you can hit the ball off the handle or the end of the bat and still get a positive

Jeff Schmitz, pictured in 2004, hit over 100 home runs in Stearns County League games. The hardhitting outfielder played with St. Martin from 19812000 and the Lake Henry Lakers 2001-2007 during his 27-year career.
result,” Schmitz said. “Metal bats are lightweight, so you can generate great bat speed. Increased bat speed equals increased exit velocity. Increased exit velocity equals more home runs. Also, ground balls are getting through the infield faster, resulting in more hits.” That was also the observation of Dold. Dold played with Richmond from 198992 and from 1995 to 2007 and is an alumnus of Rocori and St. John’s University. He played in the minor leagues with the Cincinnati Reds organization and the Minneapolis Loons. In 1998, he led the local area with 25 home runs in one year. “Metal bats really got ridiculously good at the end,” PHOTO BY HERMAN LENSING Dold said. “There were Jon Dold waits for his pitch in a 2005 region game against many homeruns should’ve New Munich, at New Munch. crease home runs, but they didn’t detract from two other factors that contribute to being a consistent home run hitter. First, the batter has to be a good hitter. There are, to be sure, hitters with an earned reputation for either making an out, or hitting it out. Their names are rarely found among the home run leaders. All of them in the SCL’s top 10, and most in the top 25, were usually in the top five of the batting order and were the batters no opponent wanted to see up with the game on the line. That wasn’t an accident. Good hitters work at their ability to hit. “My brothers and I spent a lot of hours in the backyard playing ball using tennis balls,” Schmitz said. “When I was older, I worked on a tee extensively.”
Dold made sure to get to the Royals’ weekly batting practice. If he missed one, he would hit a plastic ball into a net in his basement. The other element is that those batters were usually part of good hitting teams. Not all of their teammates had their power, but most did put the bat on the ball. “I was lucky to play with great power hitters like Corky Adams, Tim Lieser, the Athmanns, Greg Drontle and Todd Steil,” Dold said. “It made it easier because they (opponents) had to concentrate on that whole middle of the lineup.” Schmitz, too, credited talented teammates with helping his numbers. It only helped that opponents had to pitch to him. “When a lineup is deep, you don’t see anyone getting pitched around,” Schmitz said. “A deep, productive lineup also means more atbats.” There were other ways the metal bat brought about an increase in home runs. Pitchers tended to be less aggressive in attacking the strike zone, resulting in more walks, more pitches and more pitching changes. “Instead of most of your at-bats coming against the opponent’s top pitcher, a lot of your at bats were coming against the opponent’s relief pitchers who typically were less skilled than the team’s ace pitcher,” said Schmitz said. The switch to wood bats brought back a need to focus on some basic elements of hitting, even for power hitters. Good hitters learned what adjustments had to be made. “Only swing at pitches you could hit off the barrel, run out balls that used to go out of the park,” Dold said. “Try different woods. I liked ash and birch the best, but most (batters) liked maple.”

All that said, there were some pitchers who always made it difficult for sluggers to get hits. Schmitz never had great success off of Lake Henry’s Lynn Hemmesch; Dold found problems hitting Aaron and Ethan Vogt of Elrosa; Brent Heinen at Roscoe and Ken Arceneau of St. Martin. Family tradition may also have played role in the hitters; more than one player on the list has a brother, father or cousin on the home run list. In Schmitz’s case, his father, Bob, and brotherin-law, Pat Jaeger, are on the list. Like any part of baseball, home runs can create memories. For Schmitz, it was during Lake Henry’s first game of the 2001 state tournament. He and Ryan Wuertz opened the game slamming back-toback home runs. For Dold, it was also at state with his home run in the 1998 contest against Cannon Falls. “It helped us win our first state tournament game in my career,” Dold said. “I also had one in Greenwald that really carried out toward the grain silos.” Like Schmitz and Dold, something all the SCL home run leaders have in common is when they played. Twice in SCL history there have been surges in home run production across the league. The metal bats era is a given. The other came 15to-25 years before anyone played with a metal bat. By that time, almost every baseball team did something that changed the game – and increased home runs. Stories of games being played on open fields, aka cow pastures, have become part of some teams’ lore – but they were true. As time went on, fields became more established and playing surfaces more uniform. Still, until the mid-1950s, there were not a lot of home runs. In the late 1950s, for about five years, home runs kept increasing. Local parks took a cue from major leagues, minor leagues and parks in larger communities and put up home run fences. More than one old timer has told of players hitting a ball 380, 400 feet or deeper only to see the outfielder (already standing deep) catch the fly – or at least hold the batter to a double. From the mid-1950s to the mid-60s, home runs by teams increases from three to five a year for a team, to eight to ten. Triples, however, nosedived. Last year, Colton Meyer and Alex Welle of Meire Grove; Chase Aleshire, Richmond; Jason Kampsen, Lake Henry; and Ethan Navratil, Farming, had people commenting about their home run hitting in the SCL. Their names, and stories of their power hitting, will become part of SCL lore and memories.

The Lightning have numerous players who can hit, with Kody Ruedisili, Tory Miller and Jeremiah Piepkorn putting the ball in play regularly. Sam Peterson and Aaron Jenkins deliver with men on base. The team has power in its line-up, hitting 23 home runs and 26 doubles in its 14 games last season. Ruedisili had seven home runs and pitched well, striking out 36 in 21.2 innings. Brett Jenkins and Eric Bolt pitch well and can strike out batters. Nisswa has a rep-
utation of putting runs across the plate and this year, they should do so again. Nobody underestimates the Lumberjacks or, if they do, it is at their own peril. Foley’s pitching staff has earned a reputation of being tough to score on. Leading that staff is Drew Beier, who allowed only six runs in 40.2 innings. Ryan Chmielewski allowed only 15 runs in 30.2 innings, and Alec Dietl and Alex Foss both allowed only eight runs in a combined 31.1 innings. The Lumberjacks’ staff holds opponents in check while the offense, led by the bat of Luis Massa, 32 hits, .508 average; and Drew Beier, 19 hits, .422 average; put runs across the plate. Massa, Beier and Mitch Keeler all had at least 10 RBI, and six batters had at least 10 runs. Playing in the VL-North/East division puts Foley against some of the best VL teams. They have the players to compete.
Drew Beier (facing camera) and Luis Massa provide a strong 1-2 offensive punch for the Lumber Jacks. The duo combined for 51 hits and 37 runs last season.

Led by Chad Weiss, Preston Rocheleau and Carter Preston, they struck out 163 batters last year. The team’s pitching showed its quality in two close games with the state-bound Avon. Offensively, Weiss with .364 average and 24 hits, leads a team of proven hitters. Others who can reach base are Pete Herman, 19 hits, Paul Herman, 20 hits and Petron, 19 hits. The Brewers finished the regular season winning four consecutive games, but then went cold in the playoffs. Royalton maybe a team some under rate. They can also be a team that can, and will, upset opponents. They have the elements to be a competitive team. With the bats of Cole Jendro, 17 hits; Nate Psyche, 13 hits, and Grayson Suska, 16 hits, coming to the plate the team is always a threat to score. The offense should only be helped by addition of Tyler Jendro, who played with the Sobieski Skis. The Riverdogs use defense and pitching to keep opponents off base. Pitcher Nate Psyck logged 73 innings last year; and Zach Liebold pitched 45 innings while combining to strike out 100 batters. The staff will be helped by the addition of Tyler Jendro. That the team gets runners on is not doubted. When the team hits with runners on, most teams find them tough to beat. The VL-North/East has good quality teams, and this year Royalton may be among them.

Look for the Sauk Centre Titans to be in the thick of the Restorers League race. They have the experience and talent to lead the league and have a strong season. Player manager Andrew Rousslange, in his fifth season, knows the talents of infielder/pitcher Brian Beuning, outfielder Derek Holm, catcher Jake Haskamp and pitcher Shane Trattles in the field and at the plate. Jake and Dylan Haskamp are proven get-onbase batters, both hitting over .400; Rousslange, Beuning, Holm and Andrew Primus all hit near or above the .350 mark. They not only hit often, but also when it counted; the Titans had 151 team RBI last year, 17 coming from home runs. The Titans saw a lot of potential in the play of Jared Gesell at first base and pitcher Matthew Warring. Brad Czech retires at Sobieski
BY HERMAN LENSING STAFF WRITER
2021 Class C champion Sobieski has a different look this season. Thirteen-year manager Brad Czech announced his retirement following the Skis’ title run. He has been at the helm since 2009. “Before the 2021 season even started, I was about 95% sure that it was going to be my last year,” he said. “I took a day in October to call each one of the players to let them know that I was going to be retiring. We spent hours telling story after story about so many of the fun moments we’ve had at the ballpark over the years.” Highlighted memories were Class C state championships in 2014 and last year. Sobieski has 22 state trips, 11 with Czech managing. Czech, a Sobieski native, always wanted to play for the town team. Baseball was part of the summer Sunday culture. “When I was a kid, Sundays consisted of going to church in the morning, then to the ballpark for our little league baseball practice, then staying and watching the Skis games in the afternoon,” he said. “The ballpark was just a fun place to be. I certainly wanted to play for the Skis when I grew up. I think many kids around our area felt the same way.”

Brad Czech (top) joined the celebration pile Sept. 6, 2021, after Sobieski won the state Class C championship. It was the second state title for the Skis in Czech’s 13 years of managing.
Through the mid1960s to the 80s, there were two Sobieski teams, the Skis and the Poles. The names reflected the community’s Polish heritage. “People used to joke that there were 200 people that lived in town, but when the Skis played the Poles, there would be twice that many at the ballpark,” Czech said. Czech started playing amateur ball at 17 years old. That was when the Skis weren’t always the favored team.
“Sometimes people don’t remember that,” he said. “When I started in 1995, we had about a .500 record, we didn’t have that many players, our field wasn’t in great shape and our team checkbook was $1,000 in the hole.” The team eventually became a Victory League power. It is a team that mixes fundamentals and has the ability to learn and adapt. In one regard, the Skis are not typical of many dynasty-type teams. It relies on small ball for its wins.
“Ask anyone around the state, they know that’s how we play baseball. We do it because it works for us,” said Czech. “It helps us win big games.” With two state championships and two runner-up trophies under Czech, the Skis have won big games. Their smallball attack is known about as well as their pitching. “In 2014, (pitcher) Tyler Jendro (winning six games) set state tournament pitching records that might never be broken,” he said. “Last year, every single pitch of our six games was thrown by a draftee. I don’t think that will ever be repeated either.” The Skis will not be defending their Class C title this year. They have been classified as a Class B team for next year. Czech, while not managing, plans to stay with the team, helping raise funds and with ballpark improvements. Additionally, he coaches JV baseball at Little Falls and helps with his son’s youth program. “I’ll still be at the ballpark quite a bit,” he said. “A lot of what you remember is what happens off the field with the guys. You become one big family with the guys in the dugout, and the stories about the good old days usually get better as time goes on.” For Czech, those are already good memories, and he will help others create their own.
Other Resorters Leagues Kensington Norsemen Kensington’s late-season surge showed that this year could be a strong one for the club. The team won three games in region play and has the returning players for a good year. Infielders Alan Strom, Kevin Jenks, Joe Snaza and Eric Paulzine have all shown they can play their positions. In the outfield, the talents of Eric Elbe, Teigen Mortiz and Devin Nelson have proven their worth. The pitching staff benefits from the experience of Caden Fernholz behind the plate. Those talents are augmented by the play of Isaiah Sykora, Gaven Jacobson, Tanner Bennet, Hunter Schoenrock and Trappier Botz. All of them have shown potential to be big contributors this year. Those veterans provide offensive production and continuity for the team. Snaza, Isaiah Sykora and Jenks have been consistent leaders offensively. Offensively and defensively, they understand their roles and what needs to be done to win games. They should be helped with incoming talents of Dane Anderson, Jack Courrier and Anthony Sykora. If the Norsemen’s pitching improves, they will be tough with established veterans in Elbe, Mortiz, Snaza
and Schoenrock; hopefully, the young arms of Blake and Trent Koloski, Austin Ballhagen and Cole Bruss can give quality innings. Long Prairie Predators Long Prairie has the talent to compete and win in the Resorters League. With the hitting of Mitchell Heid in the line-up, the team can get runners on base. Pitchers Brady Johnson, Ted Gray, Trent Johnson and Zachery Miller have given good innings. Long Prairie has done well when they score big; six times last year, they plated 10 or more runs in a victory. Osakis Hawks With consistent play, the Hawks could be a factor in the Resorters League final standings. Players such a Luke Imdieke, Colton Fortenberry and Matt Kruse give the basis of a good offense. Derek Waldvogel, Hunter Infanger and Lane Berberich provide pitching. Urbank-Parkers Prairie Bombers The Bombers are a team no one in the Resorters League takes lightly. The team, with Alex Koep, Hunter Arnold and Jacob Thoennes, has consistent offense. That offense has shown it can manufacture runs. The team also has the talents of Koep, Levi Arnold and Hunter Haggenmiller available to keep opponents in check.

Alexandria Black Sox The Alexandria Black Sox emerged as one of the top teams in the area. They did well in the regular season, went unbeaten in the Region 16C tournament and won four games at state. Their only state loss was to eventual champion Sobieski. The Black Sox have a solid offense led by Mitch Thompson and Eric Carlsen. Both hit over .400 last year. The pitching of Blake and Carter Stockert keeps them in games. Those elements should again make the Black Sox a strong and favored Ashby A’s The A’s struggled last year trying to stay with teams. The team has problems plating runs, but did have a 12run game against Kensington. They also threw a scare into Long Prairie, scoring eight in a one-run loss. Carlos Cougars The Cougars were challenged in most games they played last season. The team’s highlights included a onerun win over Kensington and a shutout over Osakis.
