Elrosa will be challenged this year in the SCL-North, but the team also has the people to stay with the league leaders. The team has consistent hitting with two of the top power hitters in the league in its lineup in Cody Eichers (five home runs, .750 slugging percentage, 18 RBI) and Ethan Vogt (six home runs, 18 RBI, .576 slugging). Hitters Matt Schmitz (.305 ave, 12 runs, 15 RBI) and Kevin Kuefler (.311 ave, 15 runs) are effective at getting on base, getting around the bases and driving in runs. Also putting PHOTO BY HERMAN LENSING the ball in play regularly Jackson Peter has the speed to beat out infield hits, and are Brandon Roelike (10 the ability to come through in the clutch. He scored 15 hits), Brady Weller (13 runs for the Saints last year. hits) and Jackson Peter (17 hits). SPRING HILL CHARGERS The Chargers won 12 games last year and could improve on that this year. Built around a veteran corps of infielders and hitters, Spring Hill is very capable of doing well in the Stearns County League this year. A quartet of Terreses always has the Chargers putting someone on base. Jamie Terres’ .410 average and .489 on base percentage led the team as did his 25 hits. Others stinging the ball were Brent Terres (12 hits), Eric Schoenberg and Owen Meyer (13 hits each), Eric Terres (17 hits) and Nathan Terres (19 hits). The offense is where the Chargers hope to improve. The team saw more than one late-game victory slip away because of strikeouts, or just failing to push runs across the plate. Producing more runs will take pressure off the pitching staff, a staff built around Anthony Revermann, Carter Tschida and Reagan Nelson. Revermann was impressive with over 80 innings and a 1.80 ERA. Tschida finished with a 2.613 ERA and Nelson a 1.421 ERA. Veteran Jordan Welle will also be coming to the mound for the Chargers, bringing experience and durability. Tschida was drafted by Lake Henry for state play last year. Defensively, the Chargers have a strong infield with Jamie and Eric Terres up the middle and Schoenberg at third base. Owen

Meyer has emerged as a very reliable centerfielder. The talents of the veterans at Spring Hill are proven. If the potential of players such as Tschida, Nelson, Jordan Orbeck and Ben Welle come through, the Chargers will be a team that cannot be overlooked. Elrosa from pg. 2 are expected to see more action this year The team should also benefit from the additions of Abe Peter, Riley Lenarz, Gavin Kampsen and Luke Van Beck. Luke Van Beck played with the statebound Sauk Centre Titans last, but is a product of the Elrosa Little League and Legion programs. The Saints have been a powerhouse for a few years, and if their talent gels, they will be at it again in 2020.

When Farming topped Lake Henry for the Region 15C crown last year, many felt they were seeing a team that could dominate the SCL for the next few years. That is not an unwarranted prediction. The Flames seemed to improve each week last year as they blended proven, experienced talent with promising, productive younger players. The team reached state and played in three games before state runner-up Buckman stopped them in the quarterfinals. The team will miss the talents of Brad Mergen, a veteran pitcher and .349 hitter this year, but he is not the only offensive threat the team has. Isaac Nett, .460, and Ethan Navratil, .418, both had over 20 hits last year and were among the best hitters in local area. Taylor Fourre, was also a member of the 20 plus hit club. Those hits not only came often, but were productive as Mergen, Navratil and Fourre all had 10 or more RBIs. Nett is particularly effective at getting on and around the bases, having scored 21 runs in 22 games last season. The Flames have the depth of pitchers to play the many games in a season. Before the season ended, eight different Flames pitchers had come to the mound. Mergen was the workhorse with 58.2 innings and a 4-4 record. Both Tylor Schroeder (38.0 IP, 3-3, with three saves) and Adam Winkels (30.0 IP, 1-1) showed their
durability and that they, too, can hold teams and produce wins. The Flames finished 12-10 last year with most of their losses coming in the early season. This year they very well could surpass last year’s record and be the team to beat all year long. Relying on veteran leadership and some talented young players, the Roscoe Rangers head into the 2020 season with high hopes. The team struggled in a 3-12 season last year, but still managed to top region-bound Spring Hill in the regular season and won a 10-8 contest with Greenwald in the single elimination playoffs. The Rangers have usually had good team defense and now mix the talent of younger players with the experience of veterans such as Brent Heinen and Russ Leyendecker. Jordan Schleper showed his adaptability in moving to third base. His leadership in the infield was appreciated. “Our biggest challenge will be timely hitting, and mixing in some of the young talent we have coming up,” said manager Lee Schleper. The at bats of Chris Vanderbeek (.344, 11 hits) and Jordan Schleper (.367, 22 hits) and the 12 hits by Brent Heinen and Russell Leyendecker enabled the

ST. MARTIN MARTINS St. Martin has a problem most teams would love to have. It has to find ways to get enough playing time for all team members – and it has a number of good players it can bring to a game. Offensively the team has is led by the consistent hitting of Kyle Lieser and Matthew Schlangen. Lieser is simply one of the most productive offensive players in the area with a .415 batting average and .717 on base percentage. His 22 hits included eight homeruns and drove in 17 runs. Schlangen, constantly found ways to get on base, .491 on base percentage, and scored as the bats of Lieser and Nathan Schlangen, 13RBI came through. The pitcher everyone wanted was Scott Lieser. Counting his games when drafted by Farming, he finished with eight wins and a 0.66 ERA. Scott Schlangen, 1.00 ERA, was drafted by New Munich. He struck out 21 batters in 27 innings. Bryan Schlangen, drafted by Lake Henry, had 21 strikeouts in 26.2 in nings. Kyle Lieser pitched in 16 innings, was drafted by Farming, and had a 1.69 ERA. Also returning to the mound is Jaylyn Arceneau. Ryan Nett has announced his retirement, but the team should benefit from the re turn of Ben Schroeder, who struck out 37 in 42 innings in 2018. The talent is not confined to seasoned veterans. High schoolers Tanner Arceneau, Avery Schmitz and Ryan Messer are year older and could very well be impact player; and Derek Koll, who joined the team this year, is a versatile player who’s speed and baseball smarts, will help the team. The Martins were good last year and came within a run of going to state. This year they will again be a

This year, that may change as Zack Mackedanz and Spence Evans have shown promise and potential. Schleper sees further potential in Bennett Evans, Max Athmann and Austin Pauls, who are presently underclassmen in high school and have played well in youth levels. “Bennett is a big kid who can play infield and pitch. Max is a catcher and infielder and Austin is an outfielder,” Schleper said. “Of course, they are young, but all three have great potential.” Evans will be join-

The team also has the reliable experience of Brent Heinen to help from the mound. Roscoe, playing in the SCL-South, will be challenged to win games, but they have players who can win games and may well surprise people this year.

RICHMOND ROYALS
Depth of talent will help the Royals to another successful SCL season. The Royals have that depth in all areas; with the battery of pitchers, DJ Schleicher and Eli Emerson, and catcher Cole Schmitz returning, Richmond has a strong start to their defense. Emerson, drafted by Farming for state play last year, has a proven record of keeping batters off base. A workhorse pitcher with great control and command of his pitches, he struck out 60 batters in 55.1 innings last year. Schleicher earned five wins for the Royals, pitching 47.1 innings. In addition, Brady Klehr, Blaine Athmann, Austin Larson and Dalton Thelen all contributed from the mound. This year, Luke Jokela returns to the mound for the Royals. The team benefits from the experience and game knowledge of Schmitz. Schmitz not only helps in calling pitches, but is also an effective hitter, picking up 16 hits and driving in 18 runs last season. Schmitz was only part of a team that had eight players with at least 10 hits in 15 games. The Royals hit consistently, averaging over 10 hits a game, and hit hard with 29 doubles and 11 home runs. The offense puts runs on the board and the pitching and defense can protect the lead. Any team looking for a measuring stick of their abilities in the Victory League will have to face the Avon Lakers. The team comes loaded with a wealth of experience and a history of winning games. With the at bats of Caleb Curry (.433) and Taylor Holthaus (.347) in the lineup, the Lakers are usually poised to score runs. Curry scored 20 runs last year and Holthaus drove in 25 runs. They are not the only offensive punches the Lakers sent to the plate. Carter Holthaus, Cody Stich, Josh Becker, Matt Meyer and Riley Voit all had at least 15 hits before the season ended. The team had a respectable .267 average and had 45 extra-base hits. That offense gives the pitching staff a margin of runs to work with – and the staff is good at protecting a lead. Matt Pichelmann, Putter Harlander, Will Kleinschmidt and Cody Stich have shown many times that they know how to get batters out and not give up runs. Adam Harlander’s return could also make a difference for the team. The Lakers have a solid team already. If Adam Harlander and Riley Voit return to form, and potential newcomers Bjorn Hanson and Cole Fuecker come around, they will be formidable. The problem for manager Reed Voit may not be how to put a winning team on the field, but who should be playing on the field.

Last year was a really tough year for St. Wendel. The team’s youth and enthusiasm didn’t always compensate for the experience other teams brought to games. This year, the team as a group is a bit more experienced, but still young. Most of the players are still in or only one or two years from playing in high school. What the team does have is some versatile players. Jordan Gombos, Pete Schumer and Jacob

FREEPORT BLACK SOX The Black Sox bring experience and know how to win. Most of the players are in their mid-20s and know what to expect when coming between the lines. The position players are back. Carter and Brandon Sawyer help ignite the team with their offensive and defensive play. Bryan Nelson, Nate Mettenburg, Dylan Carlson, Trevor Sawyer, Jake Braegelmann and Alex Martinez have all shown they can get on base. All of them, as well as Trevor Sawyer, had 10 or more hits last season. Braegelmann was one of the area’s best for getting on base as he also had 13 walks. The team will lose the experience of TJ Frericks and Mitch Reller; both were key pitchers in the lineup. The pitching staff still has depth with Taylor Erickson, Craig Meyer, Martinez and Cody Rose taking to the mound. In four of their Victory League wins last year, they allowed only one run and it did not give up a home run to power-hitting Nisswa in a 5-4 loss. The experience of the veteran players is a plus and only part of the reason the team should do well. Erickson showed potential
for another strong season. Newcomers Carter Neuenschwander, a pitcher/outfielder, and infielder Tyler Hemker should help with the defense. The Black Sox did have did have some rough games last year, but also showed they can win and should continue to do so. Ike Sawyer’s chasing down ground balls at the shortstop position is one of strengths of the Black Sox defense this season. He also scored eight runs and drove in seven more last season.

St. Wendel from pg. 10 Wolter can, and do, play multiple positions, enabling them to stay in the lineup. Wolter, a .306 hitter, led the team with 11 hits last year. Gombos not only had hits, but reached base in almost evert way. Schumer hit five doubles and led the team in RBIs. Gombos, Jake Ethen and Schumer are the core of the pitching staff. Ethen, a 2020 graduate from Holdingford, pitched 16 innings last year and had a 1.13 ERA with 16 strikeouts. Few of the other Saints pitchers were that effective. Experienced batters learned to wait for a pitch before hitting. The Saints should be bolstered by the additions of Alex Dalbec, a new
player who shows promise as a solid hitter; Charlie Slivnik, who played with St. Stephen and Matt Catlin, who is also an experienced player. St. Wendel will again take to the field, but this year they may very well surprise teams expecting an easy win. With a combination of pitching and offensive depth, Lake Henry will again be a Stearns County League power. The pitching staff, led by Jason Kampsen, has four pitchers who had 20 or more innings last year, and they were effective. Kampsen’s 49.2 innings resulted in opponents scoring only 18 runs and striking out 15 times. His 2.54 ERA was no small part of the Lakers’ 11-7 season. Grant Ludwig (three wins and two saves) and Carter Wessel (2-1) each had at least 30 innings. Aaron Savelkoul (22 IP) was 3-0 on the year. One reason, from the impressive showing by the Lakers, is a solid defense that rarely makes mistakes. The Lakers’ offense is consistent and their players drive in runs when the chance presents itself. Almost every player on

the team had an RBI, with Matt Quade (five home runs) and Jason Kampsen (22 hits) pushing the team across to 16 RBIs. The top batting average came from Josh Kampsen with .357, but Shaye Olmscheid (21 hits) and Nick Dingman (20 hits) also gave opponents reason to worry. The Lakers don’t sit idly on bases when they get on; the team had 30 steals and 14 sacrifices. With pitching staff that can shut out opponents, and an offense that knows how to score enough runs to win, the Lakers are never out of a game. change the look of the team, but there is talent coming up with younger players. Most of the players from Region 8C last year have returned, and St. Stephen will again be tough to defeat. The pitching staff of Nick Krippner (2.68 ERA, three wins), Riley Hartwig (42.2 IP), and Chris Belling (three wins, 41 strikeouts, 2.52 ERA) all earned wins last year and kept opponents’ runs down. Helping bolster the mound staff are Bo Schmitz and Jake Schelonka. Both are expected to do a bit more pitching this year. Offensively, the Steves are hard to keep off the bases. Bo Schmitz (30 hits, .405 ave) and Mat Meyer (18 hits, .462 OBP) both reach base plenty of times. Tony Schmitz developed into a player to whom opponents had to pitch carefully with runners on, as he drove in 17 with his 21 hits (eight doubles, three home runs). Steves had at least 10 hits. The team has extra-base power, but with 20 steals, they showed the Steves will do what it takes to get into scoring position. SOBIESKI SKIS Something that will be certain in the Victory League is that Sobieski will again be a strong team. The Skis are a wellknown and respected team in Victory League. over seven runs a game shows they know how to get those hitters around the diamond. Joey Hanowski led the team in hitting .407 last year. He was just one of many players that hit often for the Skis. Ten Skis had at least 10 hits, and Collin Eckman, Hanowski, Scott Litchy and Tyler Jendro all had over 20 hits. They were, for the most part, run-producing hits. home runs and Jendro had five home runs. The offense gave plenty of support to a solid and deep pitching corps. Thomas Miller, (53 IP, 2.72 ERA, 3-2) was the workhorse pitcher for the team. Tyler Jendro (31.2 IP, .57 ERA, 36 strikeouts, 5-0) is the pitcher most considered when discussing the Skis. Those two are solid, but Parker, Jake Kapphahn and Scott Litchy all pitched 15 or more innings. Most of those names are familiar, but this year some others may move into more prominent roles with the Skis. Sobieski has a tradition of throwing strikes, playing good defense and getting hits. In the first game of the season last year, Randall showed they had the potential to play with good teams. The team started the season by upsetting Sobieski. The Cubs have a tradition of playing well, and fans have come to expect that of the team. Offensively, Cody Meyer, Rick Drew and Kyle Peterschick showed that the Cubs can put runners on base and bring them around. Drew has a knack for getting on base regularly and finished with 14 walks, among the best in the area. When the Cubs take to the field, Brett Strack and Meyer can often be found on the mound. Both had over 30 innings last year. Along with Peterschick (25.1 IP) and Drew (22.2 IP), the team struck out 110 opponents. UPSALA BLUE JAYS
It’s hard to keep the Blue Jays from scoring runs. Last season, there were only two teams who shut them out, and two of their six losses came in regionals. The team’s offense is led by the consistent hitting of Brock Cichon, Justin Cichon, Justin Lampert and Matt Swanson. All of them had over 20 hits and five others had over 10 hits. Those hits usually came when the Blue Jays needed them most. Swanson, with five doubles, pushed across 15 runs. Justin Lampert’s hits included five home runs

John Fuchs pitched in 42 innings last year for the Upsala Blue Jays, striking out 30 and taking home five wins.

and produced 14 RBIs. Not to be overlooked is timely hitting by Eric Lampert (13 RBIs), Brandon Welinski (11 RBIs) and Brock Cichon (10 RBIs). One reason for them having those totals is Upsala’s base running. The team had 15 steals last season, with Welinski picking up five of them. The Blue Jay pitching staff not only proved itself last year, but was also respected. Both Eric Lampert and Swanson were drafted for state play last season. Swanson, pitching for Buckman, earned a win at state. bi 0 8 11 10 0 1 0 13 4 9 14 1 0 15 9 0 5 0 100

Solid hitting with strong defense behind a good pitching staff are the reasons the Rebels are a force in the Victory League. The team hits often as Bill Sather, Brad Waytashek, Zach Heidmann and Logan Kalis consistently put the bat on the ball for run-producing hits. Sather, Kalis, Nick Jelacie and Heidmann each had at least 12 RBIs last season. There is power in those bats as the team produced 32 doubles and 12 home runs. Speed on the bases resulted in 23 steals and the ability to outscore opponents 133-64 last season. From the mound, the experience of Brett Kramer, Kalis and Ethan Branum have effectively limited the number of runs by opponents, allowing the Rebels to post big-margin wins, or rally for late-game victories. Konnor Wicklund has not only played well on the field, but has helped with offense in the St. Mathias lineup.
St. Mathias features good hitters in Konnor and Hunter Wicklund. Dave Benson, Nate Eschenbacher also came through with hits last season.
NISSWA LIGHTNING It’s not hard to see why Nisswa is a powerful team in the VL-North. The team is an offensive power house. With the bats of Drew Boland (.386), Jason Roepke (.479), Jeremiah Piepkorn (.435) and Adam Hardy (.418) in the lineup, the team simply outscores opponents. These are not cheap hits. The team had 53 doubles and 31 home runs last year. The Lightning’s pitching staff, built around the talents of Tyler Wittwer, Nate DeChaine and Nick Cundy, has proven effective at stopping others from outscoring them and is backed by a good defense. The Lightning can never be counted out of a game.

PIERZ LAKERS Never count the Pierz Lakers out of a game. The team has talent in hitting and pitching to play well against Victory League opponents and usually does so. Luke Girtz and Preston Rocheleau both had 18 hits last year and Reese Kapsner and Brad Meyer were consistent enough to have 15 hits; Chad Weiss continued his solid career with 19 hits. That offense, which more than once put 10 or more runs across the plate, supported a pitching staff that earned nine wins last year. The team had four pitchers – Kapsner, Reggie Litke, Meyer, Rocheleau and Weiss – who were drafted for post-season play last year. Weiss, who was 4-0 in the VL season and then won two more post-league contests, is the best known of the Lakers. The others

ROYALTON RIVERDOGS A fast outfield could very well mean runs for the Royalton Riverdogs. Speed is the team’s biggest asset. Ryan Snyder, Austin Zapzalka, Brady Brezinka and Michael Petron all patrol the outfield, and none of them lack in the speed department. That helps players get on base and around the diamond. Snyder and Petron both had over 10 hits last year. Their hitting was only part of the offensive attack for the Riverdogs. Nate Psyck is proven at hitting with 17 hits in 2019, and Cole Jendro provided a bit of power. Psyck will return to the mound. He logged in 72.2 innings, striking out 66 batters. Adam Olson and Zack Liebold, both new to the team, will get their chances on the mound against the talents of the Victory League. The team will have to find a way to replace some of the hits by Jendro, as he will miss some games this year. combination of players who can make up that difference. Besides Psyck, Ethan Walcheski will bring his catching abilities to the plate. While only a senior in high school, he is in his third year with the Riverdogs. Liebold may also see some action in the infield. The Riverdogs will have tough games in most of their Victory League outings this year. They also have the talent to meet those challenges. Almost unbeatable in the Victory League last year, the Billygoats did well in the state tournament showcase, reaching the semi-finals before falling to eventual state champion Jordan. There are good reasons as to why the team will remain a tough one to beat. With Lane Girtz, Matt Kummet, Matt Tautges and Joe Kahl, the Billygoats showed they can get on base, as each had at least 30 hits; Travis Kahl finished with 28 hits. That quintet all reached double digits in runs scored and RBIs, and the team showed power with nine home runs. Buckman is also blessed with speed, collecting 45 doubles and 32 steals. That speed and power led to runs, as most of their wins were by the 10 or more runs. In addition, veterans Shawn Lanners, Jeremy Monson and Travis and Joe Kahl have done well for the team. Buckman can never be counted out if games are close. A reason for this is the pitching staff. Led by Shawn Lanners, Jeremy Monson and Tautges, Buckman’s pitchers have all kept opponents from getting on or scoring a lot of runs. In many of their wins, the Billygoats allowed two or fewer runs. Their pitchers recorded 180 strikeouts in their 26 games. The Billygoats have a tradition of wins, and that legacy should continue this year. Brewers fans have every reason to think the team is better than its 1-12 finish last year. The team has some solid hitters in Eric Boser, who had 15 hits on the year, Maverick Kowalczyk, Ryan Stuckmayer, Jesse Marshik and Mike Poser. Poser (30.1 IP) and Calvin Kruschke (22.1 IP) did the bulk of the pitching. Rylee Rauch, Cody Kimman and Simon Gruber also pitched at least nine innings last year.

PIERZ BULLDOGS Like their mascot, the Bulldogs can be tenacious when they get their teeth into a win. The team’s potential for a strong season this year showed last year as they got hot in the post season and won a game in the Region 8C tournament. Led by the hitting of Austin Dickman, Ryan Foreman, Logan Meyer and Craig Luberts, the Bulldogs put runners on the bases and drove in those who had reached base. Foreman’s performance (24 hits) resulted in 10 RBIs, and both Dylan Kummet and Charles Boser had 13 runs. The durability of Dickman (62 IP) and the efforts of Joe Strauch (27 IP), Logan Meyer (24 IP) and Jonah Prokott (28 IP) assisted in the Bulldogs in making a showing in Region 8C. (.450) and reaches base over 50% of the time he comes to plate. He not only scores, but his at bats drove in 30 runs last season. Almost one-third of his hits were for extra bases. Another player with 40 hits was Derek Holm. His ability to get on base, his speed and his 20 steals, often have him in scoring position. With the bats of Brian Beuning (30 hits), Dylan Haskamp (23 hits), Jake Haskamp (29 hits) and Shane Trattles (20 hits), Sauk Centre can keep its offense rolling. The Titans finished last season with 256 hits and 15 home runs. No batter had more than five home runs. Trattles and Dylan Haskamp give the Titans one of the best starting combinations in the area. They can shut down opposing batters with their combined 200 strikeouts (109 for Haskamp and 91 for Trattles) across 166.1 innings (91.1 for Trattles and 75 for Haskamp). They are hard to score on and both finished last season with an ERA below 3.00. The lowest ERA on the team came from Brian Beuning, who pitched 23.0 innings with 36 strikeouts and a .78 ERA. Sauk Centre’s experienced talent will be blended with some promising youthful players, Jake Haskamp and Jacob Zollman among them. They will bring youth, energy and speed to the lineup. Bryan Zollman has announced his retirement as a player, but will

CARLOS COUGARS Carlos looks to rebound from a tough season last year. The team has a good start, as they have a full roster from which to select their nine starters. A big concern for the team is filling the centerfield position, but they have candidates to choose from. The team has depth in pitching with Brady Burgau and Hunter Schoenrock at the mound along with the experience of Noah Hittle, Isaac Peterson and Landon Olson. There could well be a few others who help keep opponents in check. Schoenrock showed a lot of potential last year and could be a factor in the team’s success. Offensively, the team should be improved with
the addition of Blake Radke and Austin Johnson. Both could also contribute to the pitching staff. Peterson, besides athletic skills, brings energy and enthusiasm to the game. That talent, blended with experienced players, and the Cougars could be a team to follow this year. KENSINGTON NORSEMEN Kensington experienced growing pains of sorts last year as they struggled to earn wins. They were young with about half the team being new to amateur baseball. This season, they could be improved as some veterans have rejoined the team. Eric Elbe, Kevin Jenks, Eric Paulzine, Caden Fernholz and Alan Strom will all provide leadership. Elbe has proven his pitch can and should be a plus for the
Norsemen pitching staff. Kensington Opponent W/LScore Alexandria L 1-11 Carlos W 5-4 Sauk Centre L 0-1 Long Prairie L 0-10 Ashby L 8-9 Osakis L 0-10 Millerville L 9-11 Ashby L 10-11 Urbank-Parkers Prairie L 0-11 Osakis L 3-12 Sauk Centre L 0-1 Carlos-Playoffs W 9-0 Park Rapids-16C L 0-5
MILLERVILLE MILLERS Few teams shut out Millerville last year. That is a definite plus for the team, and they can score runs. A big reason for that is the ability of Kevin Campbell to reach base and get home. However, the runs didn’t always translate to wins, one reason being the Millers’ lack of experience and depth in the pitching staff. The team will again be young this year, with the oldest player at 27 years old. Campbell and Dan Schaffer come to the mound for the Millers, bringing experience and durability. There are oth-
ers who pitch as needed. The team also has a promising player, Kannen Lund, who should see more playing time this year. Amateur means playing for love The term “amateur baseball” is a pretty correct one for the game played throughout the state on weekends, and some mid-week nights. The roots of the word “amateur” have nothing to do with meaning unpaid, uneven or non-polished. It means to do something out of love. That’s why the term “amateur baseball” is a more comfortable fit than town ball. The people involved in the game are there because they like being there. Few of the players are playing because of the hope to be discovered. They are doing it, generally, because they love hitting, pitching, running and fielding. Fans are there to see people they know or work with, or to support friends doing something they love to do. Growing up in central Minnesota summer meant baseball. To some degree, the pace of the game blended perfectly with the values and lifestyles of a local Sunday afternoon. At a time when most of these teams started, most of the area was populated by church-going people. In the Catholic culture, most communities had two Masses, which ended just in time for a dinner with family or at friends. That meal ended in time for a long afternoon, which was supposed be void of manual labor, but could be filled in with a ball game. The ball games usually got done in time to start evening chores, and chores generally concluded in time to listen to the Sunday wrap of ball games on the radio. The games themselves have served as sources of town pride – and occasionally depression, been used as life lessons and fueled countless retellings of unique plays, big moments and family memories. Some are true, some misplaced, but all reflect elements of what people like about amateur ball: community pride, home-grown success and the chance to see the game played up close. Over the years, there have been theories that illustrate why the game has remained popular in those communities. There might be a number or reasons for the longevity, but two big ones have to be parochialism and symbiosis. The parochialism is, usually, very easily manifested and seen as fans and family members come out to support the team simply because it is composed of, as one person said, “our boys.” The symbiotic relationship is one that not everyone understands or sees. Many have some connection to agriculture, but not all are farmers. Over the last 30 years, a number of parks have improved and are a source of pride to these communities. This year, amateur baseball is starting before Major League Baseball does. If you can get to a game, chances are there will be at least one memorable play, hit or string of events during one of those games. What you see will become a part of your family stories about a special moment of that day. That’s why people are playing and watching amateur baseball; it is something they love to do.
