Stearns County League - North Many predicted Elrosa would be with the leaders in the Stearns County League. Very few foresaw who would be leading them. When injuries and illness pulled the bats of Ethan Vogt and Cody Eichers from the line-up, Kevin and James Kuefler put the bat on the ball and themselves on the bases. Younger players such as Jackson Peter and Will Van Beck made their presence known. Peter, with 20 hits, batted .465 and is among the better batters in the area. The addition of former Sauk Centre Titan Luke Van Beck brought 10 hits to the team and Matt
Schmitz had 11 more The offense is multi-dimensional, being able to keep slapping out hits or using small ball play to score. Elrosa might not have the power they had in their line-up in the past, but they get into position to score runs. The Saints had 21 steals this year. The pitching staff also made a transition and learned to depend on Payton Van Beck and Peter. Austin Imdieke was reliable and the team still has the arm of veteran hurler Aaron Vogt. The team had five pitchers with at least 10 innings. Payton Van Beck’s 1.09 era across 33 innings is among the area’s best.

MEIRE GROVE GROVERS Meire Grove can hit. They did so all year long, even in their playoff loss to Spring Hill. The Grovers had 88 hits in 10 games, and hit throughout the line-up. Tanner Klaphake finished the season leading the team with 15 hits; he had six in one game. His .536 average is among the best of the teams profiled in this review. Others consistently putting the bat on the ball were Alex Welle, who had 12 hits, and Jordan Klaphake with 10 hits. The team’s power hitting came from Colton Meyer, who had three of the team’s six home runs. The Grovers also benefitted from the speed of Ryan Olmscheid and the experience Josh Roelike brought to the team. pitching staff, led by Matt Imdieke, Jacob Imdieke and Ben Klaphake, generally kept teams in check. Matt Imdieke finished with 39.1 innings and struck out 27 batters. The defense played well behind their pitchers. When the offense, defense and pitching came together, the Grovers were hard to beat and were in most of the game they played.

Stearns County League - South Farming has the ability to hit well and often. That leads to runs and victories when it comes to play. Led by the hitting of Isaac Nett (.447) and Ethan Navratil (.423), the Flames are always a threat to start a rally. Taylor Fourre and Cody Fourre are equally effective in getting on base and then getting home to score runs. Farming has not had a lot of power shots, but their speed has produced 18 doubles (Nett, Taylor Fourre and Adam Winkles each had three) and 12 steals. Getting to second leads to runs. In the team’s nine games, seven different players scored at least six runs. Nett led the team with 11 runs and had 12 RBI. Defensively sound, the Flames rarely make mistakes behind the pitchers. The mound duties are led by Winkles and Tylor Schroeder.
Both threw over 20 innings in the shortened regular season. Navratil also saw mound duty and threw 13 innings in the regular season. All of them have done well protecting leads or keeping games close and giving the Flames a chance to win. Winning is something they have done often this year. When PHOTO BY HERMAN LENSING region play begins, they will again be a team to Will Mergen and other Flames are adept at moving around the bases and taking chances to score runs. beat. Look to Richmond as one of the teams to beat in the upcoming Region 15C playoffs. The Royals have a solid offence, hitting .313 as a team, and can hit the long ball. Cole Schmitz led the team with three home runs in their 10 games. Dalton Thelen, Trent Gertken and Mason Primus had two home runs as the team pushed out 15 round trippers. That power is just part of an offense that has two batters, Schmitz and Justin Schroeder, with more than 15 hits. A third batter with more than 10 hits is Thelen, and Trent Gertken and Chase Aleshire both drove in 10 or more runs. Logan Aleshire is among those who benefit from those as he, Schmitz and Thelen all have scored more than 10 runs. With that kind of scoring, Richmond pitchers have usually pitched with a lead and protected it. Eli Emerson and DJ Schleicher have kept control of games and combined to strike out 45 of the 72 batters Royals pitchers have struck out. Thelen and Austin Larson have also put in time on the mound. Good defense, with fast, strong-armed outfielders and quick infielders have backed up the pitching efforts. The Royals come into Region 15C having shown they can play well in all areas of the game. Don’t be surprised if they are one of the four teams reaching the state tournament.

ST. MARTIN MARTINS The pitching of St. Martin has been great this year. When Scott Lieser, Ben Schroeder or Bryan Schlangen are on the mound, teams find it hard to score. Lieser, a former minor league pitcher, has a 1.15 ERA across 31.1 innings, striking out 43 batters and walking only five. With an ability to locate pitches he keeps batters off balance and allowed only four runs. Schroeder’s 1.62 ERA comes after 16.2 innings and, like Lieser, he has allowed four runs this year and walked only five. Schlangen, who has appeared in relief, pitched 21 innings and allowed five runs with four walks. All three have earned wins this year and Jaylyn Arceneau has had good innings in relief. UPSALA BLUE JAYS
The Upsala Blue Jays have high hopes for their appearance in the 2020 Region 8C tournament. They are not without merit. The team is hitting a .310 clip and their pitchers have seldom allowed a game to get away from them. Three .400-plus hitters are a part of the Blue Jays’ line-up. Brock Cichon brings a .500 average into regions with 10 hits, three walks and d having scored nine runs. Matt Swanson hits at a .410 clip and usually with runners head of him. He has 12 RBI. Justin Cichon leads the team in hits with 12 and with
nine runs scored. Stearns County League South from pg. 7 LAKE HENRY LAKERS Lake Henry started slow but caught fire at the end of the season to keep post-season hopes alive. The Lakers pounded out a 10-0 victory over Greenwald and then held on for a 6-5 victory over New Munich in the playoffs. That qualified them for the SCL-Central Valley play-in game to determine the final team in the eight-team Region 15C tournament. He made his 17 hits count, scoring 11 runs and driving in another six. Actually, the team hit well all year long with Carter Wessel, Levi Bast, Mathew Quade and Matthew Lieser joining Kampsen in the 10-or-more hit club. They did have problems keeping other teams from scoring until late

Pete Schumer was able to pitch deep into games, sometimes e a r n i n g complete- game wins for the Saints. He had three of the team’s five wins this season.
No team showed as much improvement over the previous year than did the St. Wendel Saints. Granted it was short season, but the Saints went from an 0-12 season in 2019 to coming within one win of a regional appearance. Much of the improvement came from the defense that made plays and, more importantly, did not have as many errors. With the defense playing better behind them, the starting pitchers were able to go deeper into ball games. Pete Schumer was the Saints’ primary pitcher, pitching complete games and earning three wins. His 32 innings led the team. He was backed up by Jack Opatz, who threw 26.2 innings and earned two wins. Offensively, opponents began to notice the young Saints were not always overpowered by amateur pitchers.

The Avon Lakers dropped their seasonopening game, but from that point on were unbeatable, earning them sole possession of first place in the Victory League-South as they head into Region 8C competition. As with any good baseball team, the Lakers combined a potent group of hitters with stingy pitching to go 7-1. Josh Becker hit .536 to lead Avon in that statistic over eight games. He also led the game in RBI with 12. 2.314 ERA while striking out 10. Over six innings, Putter Harlander give up no runs and struck out six. Another six-inning pitcher is Jon Bauer (3.00 ERA). In four games the Lakers scored in double digits – 13-3 vs. Opole, 11-8 vs. St. Stephen, 12-6 vs. Freeport and 18-1 vs. St. Wendel. The Lakers allowed just one or fewer runs in four games. The shortened season was a challenge. “It was a different year, but the same mentality: win baseball games,” Lakers manager Reed Voit said after his team beat St. Stephen for the division title July 25 at Avon. The Lakers face Ft. Ripley in the opening game of the Region 8C tournament Saturday, Aug. 8, in an evening game.

FREEPORT BLACK SOX Uneven play hurt the Black Sox at key moments of the season, ending it before the post-season began. The team did have some bright spots in their play. Pitching was a bright point of the team this year. In wins and losses, the mounds-men generally kept control of the game, giving the Black Sox a chance win. Taylor Erickson, Cody Rose and veteran Craig Meyer were particularly strong assets to the team’s pitching. All threw more than 20 innings and Rose and Meyer had ERAs below 2.00. Bryce Stalboerger and, late in the year, Carter Neuenschwander proved their worth as pitchers. The offense also had bright spots. Carter Sawyer’s .381 led the team average, but Bryan Benson’s 12 hits was the team’s top mark in that department. Those two and Jake Braegelmann all had two doubles. Tyler Hemker showed a lot of potential his first year out. Inserted into the leadoff spot, he finished with a .413 on base percentage, was second in hits with 11 and led the team in runs scored. The Black Sox season ended when the
VL-South regular season concluded. In those games they more than once played better than the record indicates. Cody Rose was one of three Freeport pitchers to throw at least 20 innings this year. He was also an area leader in ERA.

keeps opponents from reaching the bases. Riley Hartwig (23 innings) and Nick Krippner (17 innings) both have ERAs below 2.00 and Jack Schelonka had a 2.45 ERA in 14.2 innings. Hartwig also struck out 32 batters. None of the pitchers have allowed 10 runs as they kept games close and protected leads. That pitching will be needed, as some of the teams entering the Region 8C tournament are good hitting teams. The Steves should be a match for them. r 5 7 1 7 4 1 25

Blake Guggenberger, they have a core of players who can help them reach state. Bo Schmitz hits in the .400s and he has already had 12 hits and scored 10 runs. He also has power, with two home runs. Guggenberger’s 11 hits included three doubles. Belling will bring a .556 average to the plate and also hit two home runs. his five hits. Matt Kummett and Lane Girtz each had nine hits. Led by that quartet, Buckman scored often and outscored opponents 53-37 in VL play. Holding the opposition at bay were the arms of Tautges, Andrew Winscher and Aaron Weber. That trio allowed a combined 18 runs and were among the reasons Buckman pitchers recorded 75 strikes. The short season resulted in not many games being played. It is possible the Billygoats are just hitting their stride as they enter regionals. sf 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 3

Victory League - East
ROYALTON RIVERDOGS
Royalton, playing in the VL-East against Buckman and a trio of Pierz teams, faced a number of tough games this year. The hitting of Ethan Walcheski, .360 with nine hits, led the team. Adam Olson came in with a .300 average. The hitting was not consistent throughout the line-up and the Riverdogs had problems putting runners across the plate. Nathan Psyck was again the go-to pitcher for Royalton pitching 23.1 innings. Zach Leibold also made appearances

and put in 17.1 innings. Royalton did win one game, a 6-2 contest over the Pierz Bulldogs, but showed they are a better team than their 1-7 record. PIERZ BREWERS
The Pierz Brewers are the No. 1 seed of the VLEast as they head into the Region 8C tournament. They have the hitting and pitching to do well in the tournament and it will be no surprise if they advance to the state tournament. The pitching staff is anchored by the arms of Cody Kimman and Pete Schommer. Kimman is hard to score on. He doesn’t strike out that many, but few reach base against him. In his 20.1 innings, only 20 batters reached base. His 0.89 ERA is among area’s lowest. Pete Schommer is another pitcher the Brewers are not afraid to give the ball to. He has struck out 20 in 21.2 innings. While the pitchers and defense keep opponents from scoring, the Brew-

ify for Region 8C play. Most of that record came from the pitching staff. Beside Weiss, Preston Rocheleau, Reggie Litke and Carter Petron had ERAs below 3.00. The staff had a 1.82 ERA and combined to strike out 99 batters. Rocheleau stuck out 32 of them in 27.1 innings. Offensively, the team also had a leader in Weiss, who finished with a .500 average and 12 hits. Alex Haapajoki, Mitch Woitalla, Paul Herman and Rocheleau were others with 10-plus hits. The team also drew 40 base on balls and usually had a runner on base. Those runners and the pitching kept the Lakers competitive all year. They did not qualify for regions, but they played like they should have – and defeated those who did reach regions from the VL-East.
