Feed and forage testing helps producers maintain animal nutrition and, therefore, animal production. If an animal’s diet is de cient in nutrients, the diet needs to be changed, and Dairyland Laboratories services provide an almost immediate way to test a feed sample. “If a producer sends a feed sample on the day it arrives, they will have a report in hand that day,” Kieser said. “We pride ourselves on getting reports out the same day they arrive at the lab.” Kieser said those same-day reports are for near infrared analysis reports, but if more chemistry is needed, those samples are sent to their main lab location in Arcadia, Wisconsin. When the samples arrive at the lab in Sauk Rapids, they are sorted by test type and by customer. That information is then entered into a web-based data system so every-

tion that their sample has arrived and is in process,” Kieser said. “This is also a bene t because they’ll also get noti ed immediately when the results are released.” Once the ID number has been assigned to the sample, a representative

sample is prepared and the wet weight is taken. “The moisture is removed from the sample so that nutrient analysis is done on the dry portion,” Lorentz said. Next, the sample is poured into a special canister with ne screens on the bottom that facilitate drying and to ensure none of the sample is lost. The canister is placed into a high velocity low temperature oven for up to 1.5 hours to remove moisture. Once the drying is complete, a dry weight is recorded, and the sample is ground down to a particle size of 1 mm. Uniform particle sizes are needed for the analysis.
Producers may know that cover crops benefit the soil and agricultural operations, but do they know the benefits of each species? Each month a different cover crop species will be highlighted to provide producers with information needed to successfully grow cover crops or alternative forages on their operation.
Sudangrass is a great alternative forage that can be planted later into the summer growing season. This grass species has rapid emergence and growth, which makes it suitable for short-term pasture, dry hay or used as green chop. This warm-season grass has higher ideal growing temperatures between 60 and 85 degrees and will perform best under these optimum temperatures. As a forage, sudangrass is excellent in all systems. When grazing sudangrass, the plant should be allowed a minimum growth of 18 inches and a recovery period of three to four weeks. As a hay and haylage, sudangrass is excellent due to slender culms and higher dry matter yields of up to 5 tons an acre. Sudangrass has high levels of crude protein and digestible nutrients but is 15% to 20% lower in available energy when compared to corn silage. Prussic acid poisoning can occur if there is excessive nitrogen fertilization that has occurred or if animals are grazed before 10 days after a frost has occurred. As a cover crop, sudangrass is great at suppressing weeds due to high amounts of biomass. Another soil health benefit of sudangrass is the extensive fibrous root system. The roots will work toward breaking up soil compaction and renovate soil. It is not recommended to interseed sudangrass into any standing crop, but the plant can be used in a variety of cover crop and forage mixes at the end of the cash crop season. This plant should be sowed at a depth between .75 to 2 inches deep. Seeding rates will vary depending on the intended use and if the grass is planted in a monoculture but range from 20 to 40 pounds an acre. Planting should take place between June 1 and Aug. 1 for optimal growth.
