Through commencement speech, Kopel sees completion Senior class president hopes to provide a student voice BY EVAN MICHEALSON STAFF WRITER

FOLEY – Despite the abnormality of the current situation students reside in, Peyton Kopel will undergo an exciting endeavor when an uncertain commencement celebration arrives. Kopel, Foley High School’s senior class president, will speak during the ceremony, a moment she was not sure she was going to get. Luckily, despite the wide range of possibilities in how graduation could be hosted, much of the event details remained static. It was a relief to find out she would use her voice to speak on behalf of her class. “When I was told that I was going to give a speech, regardless of how commencement was being held, I felt happiness knowing that, in some way, graduation would be normal,” Kopel said. This unusual, challenging ceremony is a culmination of a rollicking high school career for Kopel, who made a name for herself as both a perennial student-athlete for the Falcons girls tennis program and an involved student representative. When the buoyant Kopel reached high school, she em-

braced it, joining the National Honor Society, Minnesota Honor Society, student council, Penn Street Singers, Gender Sexuality Alliance and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Through these diversified experiences, the multi-faceted Kopel found progress. “Each of these organizations helped me grow into the strong and determined person I am today,” Kopel said. All of these clubs and activities were precursors for yet another embarkment for Kopel, who sought a challenge as she ventured into her final year at Foley High School: becoming senior class president, a goal she managed to achieve. “I wanted to become class president because I felt that it would be a great task and challenge to represent the entire class of 2020, and, if you know me, I always love a good challenge,” she said. Girls tennis teammates Jayden Kloss and Alicia Schumer serve as vice president and secretary, respectively, while senior class leadership is rounded out by treasurer Austin Scott and historians Jack Chmielewski and Connor Thorsten. A fellow tennis player and Foley’s MHS president, Bai-

ley Gapinski will also speak at commencement. The role of student president has offered Kopel a crystal-clear glimpse into the perspectives of her classmates. In serving in a representative role while participating in a vast array of activities, she found her fellow seniors aimed to leave their mark through definitive end-ofschool events to celebrate their wondrous milestone. “Our class was looking forward to so many things, but especially our senior prom, spring sports, graduation and the senior lock-in,” Kopel said. However, their vision was altered, as a physical prom proved infeasible, with the district instead hosting a social media-driven scavenger hunt in its stead. The spring sports season was canceled in its entirety. Commencement will take place in a different format than originally planned. With Foley Public Schools providing distance learning education through the rest of the academic year, Kopel realizes that while everyone is experiencing COVID-19’s ramifications, they are witnessing it from an entirely-unique lens. “Our class is all going through our own different version of this experience,” Kopel

said. “Being away from our friends, teachers and staff has really been impacting the senior class as a whole.” Kopel has communicated with district administration about giving the senior class closure. She said through the communication of the school’s class officers, the seniors’ voices as a whole were heard. And that voice, according to soon-to-be-graduating Kopel, is one of resonating strength and resilience. “Our class will be able to finish strongly this year, because we are currently persevering through unimaginable times,” she said. “Knowing this, who knows what we will be able to conquer in the future?” But before Kopel and her classmates take that impactful step into the future, she is preparing a speech, one she believes comes in a moment of unity. “Although this isn’t the end we had imagined or that we wanted, there is a sense of joy knowing that we are so close to achieving the end of our high school journey,” Kopel said. “I am excited to speak to my class knowing that we have all gone through this experience together.”
