The Dudleys agreed there are many bene ts to what they do.
“This is a family thing,” Erin said. “The kids would come out and help.”
Jake agreed.
“They would come out and drink sap from the trees or the boiler,” he said.
Now, their daughter, Dilynn, helps with advertising for the Dudley Syrup Company via social media. She gets the word out on Instagram and Facebook about where they will be selling their products. Usually, those places are events in Big Lake, Otsego, Princeton and Elk River.
Aside from its sweetness, the Dudleys’ syrup is popular because of the color. Unlike many others, the Dudleys tap silver maples.
“A year ago, I wanted to take the title of Silver Maple Tapper,” Jake said. “We only tap silvers because no one really wants to tap silvers, but our syrup wins contests. Last year in 2022, we won the People’s Choice Award in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin.”
The Dudleys also sell
bourbon- and whiskeyavored syrup.
“The whiskey or bourbon barrels come from 11 Wells Distillery in St. Paul,” Jake said.
Jake will call and ask for a barrel which is freshemptied; then, instead of bottling the syrup immediately, it is put in the barrel and aged for several months.
Other trees on his acreage have not gone unnoticed.
“I’ve also made birch syrup,” Jake said. “The rst year I ended up with about 66 gallons, but it takes 120:1. That takes a lot of sap.”
Birch syrup has a unique avor, according to the Dudleys. Erin said the avor is similar to molasses while Jake said it is a mix of fruit with a note of teriyaki.
The rewards for Jake
are many.
“What’s rewarding is that this comes out of a tree, and there’s nothing better than wild food,” he said.
Erin agreed.
“We didn’t coin this saying, but for us, ‘Money does grow on trees.’”
