Family open hearts to animal variety

Being part of a pack of wolves usually means they are all wolves. But for the Honer herd, every being has a place, big or small, hairy or scaley.
For the Honers, animals have always been part of the family, even before they moved to a small farm site in rural Stearns
County.
“My parents were always supportive of having animals for my sister and I to care for,” Donna Honer said. “We had rabbits when we lived in town – a lot of rabbits. What this property did was just allow us to share our love for animals on a larger, more diverse scale.”
Honer’s parents, Scott and Toni Honer, though not growing up with a heavy rural background, stressed the importance of responsibility of animal care to both Honer and her sister, Ava. Because the girls had
been showing rabbits for some time before expanding the variety of animals under their care, they knew just how much work it would be to care for more.
Honer noted that because of her parents’ open hearts to animals and willingness to absorb the pets of others, they often took back rabbits they sold if the families did not want the responsibility of caring for the animals they had purchased.

After moving to their small farm site in 2010, the rst large animal purchase was a horse. Both Honer and her sister had longed to have a horse to ride and care for.
“I was a crazy horse girl,” Honer said. “I wanted a horse so bad. The thought behind getting this place was for us to have the space to have more animals and to give us girls a wholesome country living experience.”
The Honer family knew the work and nances that it would take to care for their many pets would be a challenge, especially for young girls.
After the horse came the chickens.
“Chickens are like potato chips: You can’t just have one, you have to have a whole bunch,” Honer said.
Today the Honer farm is home to a horse, a donkey, 14 cows, two goats, an emu, 30 laying hens, 30 quail, seven ducks, 10 turkeys, 12 rabbits, six cats, a dog, a pheasant, a bearded dragon, a Pacman frog, two Red-footed tortoises
and one guinea pig.
The biggest rule for the Honers is all of the animals have to co-exist. They cannot be worried about one ghting with another, especially with so many animals to give individual care to already.
One of the coolest animals the Honers have had at home were resident Vietnamese pot belly pigs that was housed in the basement until they grew heavy enough to withstand Minnesota winters.
“The pigs were super cool, and the one lived to be 8,” Honer said.
“When we put them in the barn with a big straw
pile, they burrowed little dens in the straw and when we cleaned it out in the spring, we saw one of them had stashed all of his corn cobs in his little den. He didn’t even eat them.”
The animals are another element to many of her joyful memories growing up on the farm.
Not long after Honer was old enough, she began working for a neighbor farm family. She milked cows at the organic dairy not more than a half mile down the road from her house.
