The City of Holdingford is 10 miles north of Interstate 94, on County Road 9. If you’re coming to us via Interstate 94 please take the Avon Exit. We welcome all visitors, whether you are biking on the Wobegon Trail or coming through by car. It is well worth the visit. Holdingford is home to the longest covered bridge in Minnesota, located just off main street. Stop at the Wobegon Trailhead Park. Its wooden train for the kids to play on and a SooLine railroad car with historic murals are a must see. You can bike or walk further north on one of the most scenic areas of the Wobegon Trail. Beautiful countryside takes you into Morrison County, with views of the Mississippi River Bridge and Blanchard Dam. Back in town, at Veterans Park, we have a campground for tents and motor homes, playground equipment, skateboard ramps, lighted volleyball courts and a softball field. All are ready for young and old alike to burn off any extra energy. Our park shelter can be rented for picnic get-togethers. In the center of town is Holdingford’s Soldier's Shrine, the first and oldest memorial of its kind in the United States. It is dedicated to the Veterans of World War II. Holdingford is proud to have many strong civic organizations that help the city and surrounding communities. Our Chamber of Commerce promotes continued business and expansion to keep main street thriving. The Holdingford Area Historical Society Museum offers visitors a look at memorabilia of times long ago, as the city plans for new improvements and growth for the future. We boast an excellent K-12 school system, outstanding churches, restaurants, assisted living, retail shops and businesses. Our visitors and residents are important to us. H i s t o r y History

Holdingford was named after pioneer Irishman Randolph Holding, who came to the area in 1868. He homesteaded on the west side of a ford area on South Two Rivers, where he started a general store and platted out his vision of the future village.

In 1872, he was appointed first postmaster of “Holding’s Ford” located at his general store. The building still stands as a house today. At about the same time on the east side of South Two Rivers, the village of Wardeville townsite was platted and had five homes.

In 1885, the first St. Mary’s Church was built by Scotch-Irish Catholics on the west side of South Two Rivers, as well as the first school across the road.

The name of the post office was changed to Holding Ford in 1894, and moved to the east side of the river (Wardville) with Valentine Batz as Postmaster.

Two years later, the village of Holding and Wardeville combined to be Holding Ford on Aug. 22, 1896. Also the same year, Union Evangelical Church was started on the east side of the new village. In the early part of the 20th century, the village of Holding Ford

was a very energetic and thriving village as an economic business and social center for the area.

From 1907-09, the Soo Line Railroad was built through Holding Ford, and in 1908 the local newspaper, The Advertizer, started publishing.

1911 saw the beginning of St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, and in 1915, St. Mary’s Church was rebuilt on the east side, as the first church on the west side had burned down.

A concrete bridge built in 1919 over Two Rivers helped advance Holding Ford to become the biggest trading center for miles around. The addition of the Congregational Church, started in 1921, added to the diversity of faith.

After several earlier attempts to change the name of the village, finally in 1930 the name was changed from Holding Ford to Holdingford, distinguishing the difference between the township and the village.

During prohibition, Stearns County became a large producer of moonshine with a majority of the farmers in the area distilling spirits. Stearns County spirits made their way to Minneapolis, St. Paul, Chicago and Canada.

The product was nicknamed “Minnesota 13” after the seed corn it was made from. Many say Holdingford was the unofficial moonshine capital of Minnesota.

To preserve the city’s heritage, Holdingford Area Historical Society members are working with an artist to paint a mural on the south side of their museum, running along County Road 17 through Holdingford. One of the goals of the mural is to ensure the younger generation knows how their city got its start. Historical society members feel it’s important to educate citizens on why Holdingford was established, and gured a mural was one way to accomplish this.

The planned mural will depict a horsedrawn wagon crossing a ford, with a young boy driving the team of horses for the rst time. It will showcase the old mill in the background and cattle grazing in the pasture along the road, depicting scenes from the late 1800s.

The hope is to start work on the mural project in spring of 2023, with a goal of preserving the history of Holdingford for residents and showcasing the city to visitors.

PARKS

VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK

Located on the south end of Main Street, the park features a children's playground, volleyball courts, a skate ramp, and an ice skating rink in the winter. A picnic shelter is available to rent and is the perfect place for a graduation or birthdy party. Camping is available with 8 electric sites with cement pads for RVs. There is a primitive tent area as well. Restrooms and a shower room are available as well as a sewer dump station. Cyril Ebnet Ball Field is attached to the park. If there are no games or practices underway, round up your family and friends and have a game. LAKE WOBEGON TRAIL PARK

Located on the north end of Main Street, the park features a bike maintenance station, heated restrooms, water fountain, and picnic tables. It's a great rest stop for those biking along the Wobegon Trail or a great place to park your vehicle to begin your bike ride!

FISHING AND HUNTING

Fishing is excellent at area lakes. Pelican, Two Rivers, Birch Lakes, Pine and Little Pine Lakes, Ochotto Lake, Mary Lake, Lake Runey and Lower and Upper Spunk Lakes have a variety of fish, including walleye, bass, small mouth bass, sunfish, crappies, bullheads, northern pike and perch.

Public access is available for hunting. Deer, grouse, pheasants and waterfowl are some of the game prevalent in this area.

SKIING AND SNOWMOBILING

Cross country skiing is available along the Lake Wobegon Trail. There is a lot of snowmobile activity in the area. Official trail maps can be found at various locations including the Holdingford Snow-Flyers Club and Jim’s Snowmobile & Marine.

ADDITIONAL RECREATION

More recreational opportunities exist within a short driving distance: St. John’s University offers a variety of activities including hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, nature walks and birding. The university is located 13 miles southeast of Holdingford on Interstate 94.

Two golf courses are available for those wishing to enjoy the greens. Fritz Panek’s golf driving range is a really unique experience. It is located east on County Road 17 two miles then north on County Road 3. Albany Golf Club is 10 miles to the southwest and is open to the public and offers a more traditional course.

Bowling is available in Albany at Albany Bowling Center.

Albany’s North Park offers the area’s disc golf course for those interested in this unique outdoor experience.

HOLDINGFORD SCHOOL DISTRICT

The district hosts many activities for children and adults. They offer open swimming and swimming lessons at the school. They boast 2 pickleball courts and offer summer softball and volleyball. Check out their community education newsletter or check with the school for a full list of activities.

The Lake Wobegon Trail measures 62 miles in Stearns County. The Stearns County segment of the Lake Wobegon Trail extends from the Stearns/Todd County line to St. Joseph and from Albany to the Morrison/Stearns County line. There is an additional eight miles of the Lake Wobegon Trail in Todd County.

If you connect the Lake Wobegon Trail with Morrison County’s connecting Soo Line Trail and the Central Lakes Trail, which meets the Lake Wobegon Trail in Osakis, you have the LONGEST PAVED RAIL TRAIL in the country – over 120 miles long.

The trail is open to bicycling, snowmobiling without studs, walking and rollerblading. The trail was built on two abandoned railroad corridors –the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and the Soo Line.

HELPING HANDS OUTREACH:

Helping Hands outreach is a non-profit community-supported organization located in Holdingford and St. Stephen that helps older adults and adults with disabilities remain in their home and community. Helping Hands volunteers provide transportation, light housekeeping and chore services. Our professional health educators and trained volunteers provide health and wellness classes, exercise groups and support for family caregivers. Helping Hands also supports weekly dining and monthly Lunch & Learn programs in both communities. We rely on the generosity of volunteers and donations to sustain our programs. HOLDINGFORD CITY CENTER: The Holdingford City Center is located at 420 Main Street. The offices of the clerk and mayor are located here along with the Fire Department. The Holdingford Area Food Shelf, managed by the local Lioness Club, is at the City Center. Helping Hands Outreach has senior dining every Tuesday at noon in the dining hall. The center is available for rental on weekdays and weekends. The center includes a large meeting area, a commercial kitchen and two handicapped accessible bathrooms. LIBRARY: Not far from Holdingford, the Albany Public Library, located at 400 Railroad Ave., is a 3,000 sq. ft. spacious building. It is one of thirty-one libraries that make up the Great River Regional Library. With your free library card, you can check out books, videos, cassettes, compact disks, books-on-tape and popular magazines. Using the varied reference resources, your questions will be answered, plus a public Internet station is available for your use. Daily deliveries bring requested items to patrons within several days and children’s programs are presented several times a year.

KASM 1150 AM is a privately owned radio station. KASM has been serving Central Minnesota since 1950 and provides the area with news, weather, farm reports, sports, community information and music that includes polka, country and sounds from the big band era. KASM’s signal extends to the North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Canadian borders. KASM’s sister station is KDDG 105.5 FM and plays your favorite oldies.

POST OFFICE: Holdingford has a firstclass post office. The Holdingford Post Office has all mail services available, with Express Mail overnight delivery to most major market cities and First Class Mail overnight delivery to Minneapolis-St. Paul. It is located at 105 Plymouth Street.

American Legion Auxiliary

The auxiliary is made up of women who are wives, sisters, children and grandchildren of veterans. Poppy day is held in May with all donations going back to the veterans. Proceeds are used for the ice cream social, Christmas gifts and decorations. Meat raffles are also held during the winter to raise money for school and community support. Holdingford Chamber of Commerce

The purpose of the chamber is to cooperatively advertise and promote continued business or business expansion for the sake of the local community.

The Historical Society takes an active part in local community events, sharing the stories and history of our area. The documentary on the prohibition days in the area, "Minnesota 13 from Grain to Glass," has created a boost in interest on local moonshining and how it helped the survival of family farms. The Historical Society sells DVDs of the documentary as a fundraiser. The Welna building restoration (which houses the museum), the boxcar mural at the Lake Wobegon Bike Trail Head, a video taken of the Milbrandt excavation and posted at the Holdingford Historical Society's YouTube site (as well as other videos posted there), a restored local millstone and a large petrified wood piece are all works of the Historical Society. The society is in the process of raising funds for the creation of a mural depicting Randolph Holding, the origin of the name of Holdingford. The Holdingford Area Historical Society Museum is open by appointment or during special Holdingford events. The Holdingford Sno-Flyers was officially established in 1968. The Sno-Flyers was organized by a group of people who had a love of the winter outdoors. The Club belongs to state and federal snowmobiling organizations that are crucial for maintaining laws that protect snowmobiling and other outdoor recreation. The Sno-Flyers has about 30 members and holds an annual membership meeting the third Saturday of October at 8 p.m. at the Sno-Flyers Clubhouse. The club is a non-profit charitable organization founded in 1982 by a group of parents for the purpose of supporting their children in athletic programs at Holdingford Schools. CentraCare – Albany Clinic offers area residents primary care services in a high-quality, cost-effective and caring manner. Our family medicine physicians and advanced practice providers care for patients of all ages. Onsite lab, imaging, physical therapy, ultrasound and diabetes education are offered at the clinic. Specialists also provide consultation for OB/GYN, orthopedics and podiatry.

The skilled and experienced healthcare team of CentraCare – Albany Clinic continues to offer primary care, urgent care, lab, imaging, physical therapy, diabetes education and ultrasound. In addition, visiting specialists offer obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics and podiatry. A new facility was built in 2019.

The physicians are board certified in Family Medicine and offer primary care for all ages. They are Libby Brever, MD; Nathan Brever, MD; and Brittany Nagel, DO. They are joined by Physician Assistants Jennifer Gannon, PA-C and Easton Popma, PA-C. The clinic provides a team-based care model where patients are a part of a team with skilled health professionals that work together to deliver more personalized, coordinated care and accessibility. The clinic hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Family Medicine physicians and advanced practice providers also see patients with urgent care needs on Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m. Physician Assistant William Green, provides urgent care for all ages Monday through Thursday from noon to 8 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some symptoms appropriate for urgent care include upper respiratory infection, urinary tract infections, minor burns, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, acute sprains and strains.

A certified diabetes educator and dietician works with patients as needed to create a personalized wellness plan that educates, motivates and empowers the patient with diabetes. It is designed to help patients find the tools they need to make positive changes in their behavior and lifestyles.

Physical Therapy is offered Monday through Friday in conjunction with therapists from St. Cloud Hospital’s Rehabilitation Services.
