The golden hour

Retirement a time to shine for photographer Rook By DIANE LEUKAM Staff Writer

ALEXANDRIA – A large package arrived at the doorstep of Jim Rook’s Alexandria home. It was from an agency in Massachusetts, but in reality, it was just making a full circle back to Rook. Opening it with great care, many things went through his mind as he studied eight large prints, each one as gorgeous as the next, and more than half the size of his dining room table. The prints were of landscape photos he had shot in September 2010 in South Dakota. Using just the right marker, Rook

signed each print before re-packaging them and sending them on to their final destination, the veterans hospital at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. That was in 2016, and last summer, another was purchased for an expansion of the facility. Rook, 67, has loved photography since he was a boy. “My mom was always taking pictures when I was a little kid,” Rook said Jan. 24 from the home he shares with his wife, Susan and his golden retriever, Millie. “I would bug her to use her camera. When I was 10 or 11 she went out to California to see one of my brothers and went to a pawn store and bought me a little 35mm camera. That lasted me until I was in college. I look back and I thought those were good pictures and they weren’t, but the interest was there.” Even as a college student Rook

Jim Rook of Alexandria has pursued a lifelong interest in photography, with more time to devote to his business after his retirement from a career in agriculture-related fields. Rook’s landscape prints grace the walls of the veterans hospital at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., and his photos have appeared in numerous publications.

would have loved to make a career as a wildlife photographer, but he realized that was not going to pay the bills. So, having grown up on a small dairy farm, his love for agriculture led him to South Dakota State University where he majored in dairy nutrition and minored in bio-chemistry. A long career in agriculture ensued,
