The admiration and respect for one another is evident. After all, they have known each other since Pederson was very young, growing up with his parents, Steve and JoAnn Pederson, and his older sister, Valencia. “Before his time, my dad and his grandpa farmed across the line fence,” Pooch said. “We’d do things for each other all theWhentime.”Pederson is asked if he is a farmer at heart, the answer is a smile and a simple “Yup!”Pederson treasures the years he and his dad were always together on the 200-acre farm. AJ was homeschooled, taught by his dad in what he calls a basic, everyday farm life. “In the springtime, I’d

Then, it was back outside. They had one hobby they particularly enjoyed working on together.“We used to work on and make remote control model airplanes; he was an airplane mechanic,” Pederson said. When Steve was just 50 years old, he died from cancer. For Pederson, 11 at the time, life was different. In seventh grade, he started school at West Central Area Schools in Barrett, where is will be a sophomore this fall. His favorite subjects are anything to do with agriculture and history. He enjoys being a member of FFA and plans to work on projects in the coming years. For now, it’s his 4-H project that has drawn attention. It’s a project he worked on in the Poochs’ shed since last October, finishing shortly before the fair began. He completely restored a Case 770 and, for his efforts, was awarded the Grand Champion Purple Ribbon for being outstanding in all standards, and qualifying for the State Fair. The project stems from a love for tractors shared by the two. Pooch is a self-proclaimed tractor hoarder, with a collection of 38 Case tractors that run, along with four more that need work. He seeks out unique tractors and has restored four of them himself. He studies every detail to make sure restorations are authentic.Pooch owns the 1969-built 770, and covered the cost of restoration, offering tips and tricks to Pederson through the process. Pederson chose to work on this tractor because there weren’t many like it. The restored tractor sat in the 4-H building on the fairgrounds, alongside a book put together by Pederson documenting his work tearing the tractor completely down to the bare bones and rebuilding it, one part at a time. “The biggest challenge was torquing down the headbolts and taking off the fenders,” Pederson said. “Those were probably the hardest jobs of restoring this.”

On rainy days and days we couldn’t be in the field, we’d do some school work.”

Turning a page in the book, he stopped at a photo. “That’s the new fuel pump I put on; that was actually after I had the headbolts torqued down and was working on putting back the injectors and all that stuff,” he said. Pooch was there for support the whole way. He pays attention to every detail of these machines, some

It was time to start the engine, and Pooch was ready with the video camera. “On the second try it started right up,” Pooch said. “There’s a frame of him and he’s smiling. Everyone liked that “NeverPedersonvideo!”smiled.adull moment,” he said. “We don’t have a YouTube channel yet.”The two discussed several more tractors in the collection, like a 1070 Case demonstrator tractor that was built the day after the 770. It was the first run of the model that was built, painted black with a tan cab. There is what Pooch calls an “odd duck” tractor from Montana, a rare 400-hp Case 4994, that Pederson plans to use for fieldwork. Then, there is the 930 that Pederson runs in tractor pulls, something he started last year at the fair and has enjoyed immensely. Pooch proudly told the story of how Pederson’s tractor pulling began after he asked if he could drive in the pull last summer. “I started out at 8500 (pounds) so he understood how the tractor was driven, then he drove the 9500 and of course the very first time he took first,” Pooch said. “After that, the worst he did was second all year; it’s not so much out there for a trophy, it’s the joy of doing it.”

In the industrial building on the fairgrounds were two more Pooch tractors. A small Case SC was purchased for $200; it did not run, but Pooch later learned it just had some wires crossed. Now, it is his pulling tractor. A larger, more unusual-looking Case Diesel 400 High Crop is a tractor that almost appears to be on stilts. It is set to be the next tractor for Pederson to restore beginning in the winter. “I don’t think this one is going to be as hard as the other one,” he said. There could be another major restoration project in Pederson’s future. Pooch would like to see him enter the FFA Delo Tractor Restoration Competition. It is a very intense version of the restoration of the 770 he just completed. If the project were to win at the state level, it would be on to the national level. “You have to document every little thing you did, every nut and bolt you bought, every little crack you welded, every little detail,” Pooch said. “So, not only are you restoring the tractor, you are writing a documentary of what you did.”

Just over 21 years ago, my parents were blessed with a fun-loving, wild and witty brown-haired, brown-eyed girl. As an innocent young lass, you could find me, Grace Jeurissen, swinging between the cows in our tie stall barn just outside of Shakopee. My favorite spot in the barn was right by my favorite cows’ stall. First was Sugar, a moderately framed black Holstein that was a good 8 years old when she moved on to higher headquarters. Next was Rose, a massive Brown Swiss that started the flame in my heart for the big brown bossies. After Rose came Faline, and then we uprooted the herd and moved them to their new home in little Lester Prairie. My family now milks 110 head of Holsteins and a few crossbred cattle that still give me plenty to stay entertained on the weekends when I travel from my home here in Sauk Centre back to the farm.It was the family farm that sparked my love of country living, which is part of the reason I enjoy my job with Star Publications as a rural reporter. I share a lot in common with the people we meet at trade shows and out on interviews. My post-secondary education consists of an Agribusiness Associates from Ridegwater in Willmar, where I was exposed to agriculture on a new level. I took courses in crops, dairy, beef and agribusiness. I feel well versed on the farming side of Country Acres, which makes interviewing much easier. Now I don’t want to forget about the other side of Country Acres that relates to other aspects of country life. Stories about people’s unique ventures happen to be some of my favorite stories to write because I learn something new eachMytime.most vivid memory since starting with Country Acres has been watching a hummingbird land on my hand shortly following an interview. It’s these memorable experiences that make meeting all kinds of people so much fun. It sure sounds like I do a lot of “fun-having” for my job but let me assure you, I do work, too. I want to shed light on how well-prepared I feel walking into my position as editor of Country Acres. Diane Leukam has been more than helpful in my transition from farm girl to writer. She has taken me under her wing and shown me the tiny details that make Country Acres a central Minnesota gem. Her guidance has made me confident that, even after she starts a new adventure elsewhere, the work she has done will not be forgotten and will live strongly within the pages of Country Acres. I still have a couple months left to work with Diane, so we will still be seeing more of her stories in the next few issues.Icannot thank her enough for being open-minded to my ideas and guiding me through the logistics of Country Acres. As I transition into the editor position, here are some things I request of our readers.–Stories don’t grow on trees. We are always looking for our next story and the best way to find them is through getting requests from our readers.

– The best way to get something into the paper is by giving us a call. I would love to chat about your ideas. – Please keep your eyes peeled for unique stories and opportunities. We can’t be in all 10 counties at once, as much as we wish we could. This has been a great start to my future with Country Acres and I want to continue keeping the tradition alive while adding in my own “touch of Grace.”Cheers to the next adventure Country Acres takes me on and to the vibrant people within its pages. A decade of

A decade has come and gone here at Country Acres. Our first issue was July 1, 2012, and we’ve been growing ever since. People love reading our in-depth, downhome features and other content that reveals what their family, friends and neighbors are up to – and even the strangers they’ve never met. After reading their stories, they no longer feel like strangers. That’s how I feel about you. It’s as though I know you, even though most of us have never met. And, for those of you I have met, it has been a joy. It is bittersweet writing this column, as it closes the “Editor of Country Acres” chapter in my book. I will be retiring from my work at Star Publications in October and, as I phase out of the various parts of this work, others are filling in beautifully as we rearrange and make adjustments. Therefore, let me introduce you to Grace Jeurissen, the new editor of Country Acres. Since early February, it has been my pleasure working with Grace, whose byline you have seen on many stories by now. It became evident very early on that she would be a natural fit for this publication. As she greets you in her first column below, it is with great confidence that I leave her at the helm of Country Acres. She loves farming and people, and she truly gets what living in the country is all about. I sincerely hope she finds her work as rewarding as I have over the years. She will not have time to write every story, of course, but there really is no feeling like that drive back to the office after a great interview. It’s exhilarating –and difficult to explain. I guess, basically, it makes you remember there are so many interesting and genuinely good people out there. You guys make that happen. Speaking of making things happen, our advertiser are at the heart of it all. Publishing anything is an expensive business and, from the very beginning, our advertisers have stood unwaveringly by our side. I pulled up that first issue and as I looked through it, I counted about 50 advertisers that, to this day, still grace the pages of nearly every issue. That is no accident. They also know our readers care about this paper and absorb it cover to cover. From our end, we sincerely appreciate and value every advertiser, doing our best to create an effective, quality product that in turns benefits their businesses.

Less than a year into Country Acres, my first column as editor was called “Growing up on the farm.” Here are a couple excerpts: “As a kid, I sometimes envied ‘city’ kids their ability to run around town on their bikes, play sports and just hang out after school. Little did I know at the time that we were the lucky ones!” And: “Looking back, I miss those days of work, play and having time to spare. Most nights after milking, Dad would be at the kitchen table playing cards, scrabble, cribbage or some other game with whoever wanted to play. Mom and Dad were always there. Life wasn’t always easy, it wasn’t always perfect, but it was simple.” My guess is that country life is still like that for some, not as much for others. The 60s and 70s were different times, but country people generally remain the same. Thank you for being you. You have made my life richer, and I hope Country Acres can continue to do the same for you. Take it away, Grace!

What does leadership mean to you? Leadership is the act of encouraging people to do the best they can at the task at hand. A good leader is someone who people enjoy being around but still respect their decisions.

Salutes...Salutes... TYLER SIIRA

What is the greatest benefit you have received from being involved in FFA? The greatest benefit I have received from being in FFA is probably being able to talk to other farm kids and learn about the way they do things and see how it’s different from how we do it on our farm.

What do you enjoy most about FFA? I enjoy working with the other members of our chapter because they are a very friendly and talkative group that has good ideas and can get stuff done.

Tell us about some of the things you’ve done this year in FFA: This year I participated in the general livestock judging contest at the region and state level. I have also participated in the fruit sales fundraiser. Name one current issue you believe will impact agriculture in the future. I think the majority of the nation’s urban population has a very inaccurate view of farms and how they work. I think a lot of people just see mega farms with their brand-new equipment and think that’s how all farms work. Really most family farms are using equipment that is from the 80s and have off farm income in order to stay afloat with the increasing cost of inputs. How would you encourage an inactive FFA member to become more involved? I would try to tell them that the organization has so much to offer and there are so many different ways to be involved in your own way.

What other hobbies and interests do you have outside of FFA? I am involved in 4-H, track and field, alpine ski racing and mountain biking. I also enjoy working on the farm, I have a few head of cattle and sheep and help manage our animals. I also help with doing maintenance on our tractors and equipment and use equipment year-round on the farm. 320-251-5090 |  New Address: 32640 Co. Rd. 133, St. Joseph

Making models started as a personal project for Zenner – he thought it would be fun to have a Peterbilt semi made of wood, so he built one. Then, a few friends thought they needed one too, so Zenner built another, followed by a few more requests, and a few more.

RAYMOND – It starts at the wheels and, like a skyscraper, he builds from the ground up. For sometimes 65 hours a week, Aaron Zenner builds what farmers’ dreams are made of, anything from a Peterbilt semi with an accompanying cattle pot trailer, to a Case International Quadtrac. “I grew up enjoying using my hands to work on things,” Zenner said. “This has provided me a great place to focus on the little details.”

An array of finished projects waits for their forever homes in Aaron Zenner’s basement. The semi on top of the large Peterbilt model is the one that started this adventure for Zenner. Since 2016, he has been building wooden equipment replicas as a hobby, that is until January, when he turned it into a full-time occupation. Since his first project, he has built 35 Peterbilt semis among an array of other equipment, and has invested in a CNC machine, new sanders and saws. He thought this would be a fun thing to try and because of the caliber of his talent, many people are interested. He only takes requests twice per year and the spots fill up quickly. “It’s not cheap to make these, but they’re worth it because of the amount Zenner from page 10 Zenner page 12 of detail I add,” Zenner said. “I spend an average of 32 hours on each model of equipment, give or take.” Zenner has been around farm equipment his whole life. He grew up on a dairy near Lake Henry and went to college at Ridgewater for Farm Operations and Management. After school, he worked on a farm doing a lot of custom crop work running choppers and semis. While in college, Zenner liked to spend some of his free time painting his favorite cars and farm equipment.

This is a Case International Quadtrac built by Aaron Zenner of Raymond.

Aaron Zenner has a map with pins marking where he has shipped models to around the United States. He is sending a few to Texas and Germany in the coming months.

His artistic ability was so profound, many of his friends were impressed and asked for paintings of their own. His workspace is now decorated with his past paintings, a reminder of how far he has come in his“I’veability.moved on to bigger, more challenging things,” Zenner said of his past and present artwork. “This is far more challenging and it entails a great deal of sketching, measuring and math.” 13

These are paintings Aaron Zenner did before his carving career took off. He made five paintings that he sold to friends while in college.

The first customer of Zenner’s wanted a silage truck. That person now has six of Zenner’s models in his office. His first customer is proof of the satisfaction people receive from having a smaller version of their favorite equipment in their homes and offices. Three to four hours is the amount of time it takes for him to sketch and plan out his next project. This year, he is planning for around 62 models. Customers order the piece of equipment they want, and Zenner considers it a privilege of putting the project together. Depending on the wood, time and extent of detail, the price changes. “If everyone can have one, it loses its uniqueness and value; these aren’t like mass-produced toy tractors from the store,” he said. Some of Zenner’s time in the shop is spent making the tiniest details on his models. He will sometimes need 300 segments of toothpicks cut up into Zenner Zenner

miniscule pieces to be placed as the lug nuts and bolts on a model. “Some of the work can be tedious, but it makes the model so much better,” he Theresaid.are different models that have moving booms, wheels and threepoint attachments. The last pieces to be put on the models are the tiny details like the mirrors, lights and railings. He uses different types of wood to achieve the natural color of the tractor, some of which are redheart, yellowheart, padauk and purpleheart that he purchases from a supplier in Ohio. This helps make his models truly one of a Otherkind. than a few part-time carvers, Zenner thinks he might be the only one in the U.S. selling wooden agricultural equipment models on this level. He has met a man from Ireland who does carving like him, and Zenner admires

Starbuck,

Before starting a project, Aaron Zenner draws and makes measurements to achieve the utmost accuracy for each model. This part of the process takes him three to four hours. his work. This job has given him the opportunity to meet people from all over the country. He recently visited Texas to take measurements of a cotton harvester he is making for the farm. The cotton picker is something Zenner has never done, which provides a new challenge. “I’ve done a lot of different equipment,” Zenner said. “When I make a tractor or semi again, chances are it won’t be exactly the same as the last one.”Each piece of equipment he makes is uniquely its own. Whether certain details get improved or certain requests are made, each is its own masterpiece. Considering the amount of time it Zenner from page 13 takes for him to whittle away the fine details of each piece, he is excited to see them completed and on his work bench. “I like to just admire them for a bit after I’m finished,” Zenner said. He has shipped equipment as far as Ireland and will be shipping one to Germany soon. After creating his Facebook page in 2018, the business really took off. Zenner still helps in the spring and fall working on the farm where he was previously employed. He says somedays he misses working on the farm full-time, but when he is in his wood shop, all the worries in the world carve away. “Nothing beats seeing the excitement on my customers’ faces when I deliver their models,” Zenner said. “Some orders are surprises and the reactions of people receiving the gift are unbeatable.”

CLARISSA – Bob Freeman Jr. has been interested in photography since he was a little boy. At the age of 12, he picked up his first Instamatic, he moved on to a Polaroid and, Freeman’s photography a call from the wild BY SARAH COLBURN STAFF WRITER by his early 20s, he had purchased his first quality camera, a Pentax“I’veSpotmatic.alwaysbeen drawn to wild places and wild things,” Freeman said. “My dad would take me out to the island we owned on Sauk Lake. We would lie down and wait for things to come. It just really stimulated my young mind and I became hooked on nature.” Freeman and his wife, Clare, have traveled the country in search of picture-perfect vistas. They’ve been to Utah, Arizona, Montana, Colorado, Nevada, Wyoming, Texas, North Dakota and Mexico, just to name a few. Though Bob sometimes ventures alone, most often he and Clare travel together. The couple has been married 36 years and Bob said he still likes to look at the world through Clare’s eyes. They can be found hiking miles into the woods to find a place of solace, where there are no other humans milling about, only the natural world surrounding them. “We get in there and we find solitude in remote places,” he said. “If believe in God, all the distractions are removed. Clare jokes that he always has to go around the next bend and can’t ever hike far enough; he always needs to go a little farther. He’s braved the elements to get his shots, 40 degrees, 30mph winds, and has hiked a plateau in the Beartooth Mountains, coming back Freeman page 21 to the car soaked and shivering. He has encountered grizzly bears in the wild, a Pine Marten in Glacier National Park with a squirrel in its mouth, the moment two cardinals exchanged a seed, a Green Heron in San Blas, Mexico.

Freeman from page 21

PHOTOS SUBMITTED (above) This photo was taken while on a trip to Alaska. The settling of the mist around the sea stacks of the Kenai Fjords intrigued photographer Bob Freeman Jr. (right) Birds, like this Cedar Waxwing, are common subjects of Bob Freeman Jr.'s photographs.

Freeman works silently and hidden from nature, often creating blinds and waiting patiently for nature to come to him, just as his dad taught him as a little kid. He’ll pop up a blind and send out a bird call –and simply wait. “No one else in the world knows you’re doing that,” he said. “It’s a very private thing.”

While Freeman has always had a love of nature, he’s had to fit his photography in through the years. He farmed briefly early in life until a back surgery set him on a new path of sales. He then spent nearly two decades with the National Federation of Independent Business. He did political research for National Write Your Congressman. He officially retired in 2014, leaving more time for his passions. His upbringing, he said, is what drives him to this “Myday. parents really made it easy for me,” he said. “I was raised in Sauk Centre in a four-acre resort on a lake.” To this day, he said, he never knows when one of those special photography moments will show up. When he sets out with intent for the day to take photos, Freeman dons comfortable hiking clothes and a trusty hat to protect his head. He always wears something with an array of pockets large enough to fit his lenses and lens caps. He often carries a tripod on his ventures to help in low-light conditions. “I rejoice in the search for beauty,” he said. “It is the natural revelation of God’s beauty that causes one to worship. Beauty is elusive; it can be bold or subtle, but it’s all around us and a photographer has to have vision in order to find that.”

Looking for natural and unique geometric patterns in nature is part of photographing plants, landscapes and Bobwildlife.Freeman Jr. travels the country with his wife, clare, and captures stunning photos of nature.

What do you have to do to prepare your animal for the state fair? We feed and water the animals daily, walk them and clip them to look their best. Were there any critiques the judge at your county fair gave you to improve on? Try to clean her up and take off some condition through her head and neck area.

Do you have any goals for the state fair, or something that you want to try? My goals are for my heifer to win her class and place in the top 10 in showmanship for my age group. Tell us about your best experience while showing livestock through 4-H: Last year at the state fair, I showed my Hampshire breeding gilt. She was Champion Hampshire Breeding Gilt, fourth Overall Purebred Breeding Gilt and fifth Overall Breeding Gilt. Also, I was Reserve Champion Showman in my age group. Who has been your 4-H Mentor in your project area and why? Tim and Megan Schrupp and Chad Bohn – they have given me opportunities to work with them at bigger shows and have taught me things that I can do to make my animals look better, such as using the right clipper blade and applying the proper fitting adhesives before the show.

What livestock project are you taking to the state fair this year? I have been showing dairy for 11 years. This year, I will be taking my Brown Swiss Winter Senior Yearling named Vir Kar J Tequila Topeka. She was the Overall Junior Supreme Champion heifer at the Meeker County Fair.

What are you looking forward to about the State Fair Livestock Encampment? It’s a lot of fun meeting and interacting with new people, including 4-Hers from other counties.
