Endless opportunities

Midwest Machinery Co. hiring an array of positions

With 30 locations across Minnesota and western Wisconsin, Midwest Machinery Co. is looking for new employees.

“People have more geography to move around without the hassle of starting over with a new company,” said Ashley Mueller, a human resources manager for the company. “There are opportunities for leadership development if somebody wants to grow.”

Midwest Machinery is hiring in a broad spectrum of areas, from equipment sales to technicians and mechanics, parts sales and management openings.

Mueller said the company’s employees know their customers, and no matter which location they are a part of, Midwest Machinery has a smalltown, personal feel.

“You’re not just a number,” she said. “A lot of our employees can rattle off customer’s names and families and are knowledgeable about the equipment a customer has so they can help.”

Midwest Machinery acquired six SEMA Equipment and seven Frontier Ag & Turf stores in January 2022. Mueller said that acquisition provided employees of the acquired companies the same benefits package as those at Midwest Machinery and lessened the out-of-pocket costs for those at the acquired companies. Benefits include medical, dental and vision insurance as well as a 401(k) plan, company-paid life insurance and short-term disability insurance with the opportunity to purchase long-term coverage. There is also a tool allowance for mechanics.

Employees can apply to join the leadership development program. The company selects 10 people a year to join the program, and they meet once a month for two years as a group to hear from different corporate-level managers. They may spend the day with the corporate sales manager or the human resources director to learn about positions throughout the company.

“It gives them a little insight into the whole spectrum of what is involved,” Mueller said. “It’s pretty neat that our corporate-level folks take time out of their schedules to grow and invest in our current employees who want to advance.”

Regardless of whether an employee joins the leadership track or is happy in their existing position, Mueller said they are looking for the same skills when it comes to new employees.

Some needed skills employees need to exemplify are being pleasant with customers and providing problem-solving solutions while also reaching out to get an answer when they do not have one, Mueller said.

When it comes to sales associates, Mueller said the company leaders look for hands-on experience or exposure to agriculture. Exposure does not necessarily mean a candidate grew up on a farm but does mean a person is knowledgeable of farm equipment and has a good grasp of the agriculture industry.

Most of the company’s technicians have gone through some schooling, either a two-year mechanic program, a John Deere program or an equivalent diesel program.

Midwest Machinery also offers internship programs for students. If the student is hired following an internship with the company, Mueller said they may be eligible for 100% educational reimbursement including the cost of tuition, books, registration fees, on-campus housing and meals.

Life on the farm Staying in tune as a couple and a family

Ryan Pallow remembers the days his 88-year-old grandfather, his dad and he worked in the fields of Pallow Family Farms Inc.

Today, he looks across the field to see the tradition continue, but now with his own father behind the wheel of the combine and his son, Rylan, hauling the grain cart as he runs the semi.

“It does bring a huge sense of pride,” Ryan said.

Pallow Family Farms Inc. is in its third generation of leadership and Ryan and his wife, Brittney, said the strength of family and strong communication is at the heart of their success.

Ryan farms 1,600 acres of corn, soybean and alfalfa and 80 head of beef cattle with his family and his parents, Ron and Jan Pallow.

Brittney works off the farm full-time but grew up on a farm, and the couple said her understanding of farm life helps in the day-today operations.

“There’s a whole lot less stress because of that,” Ryan said.

The couple also makes a point to talk each day about what is coming up and end each night talking through the day’s challenges and successes.

Having that time to talk through things, Ryan said, is key to maintaining mental wellness on a busy farm.

For Brittney, it’s a way to stay in the rhythm of the seasons. Depending on the farm cycle, she knows she’ll be solo parenting their four kids or bringing meals to the field.

“Depending on what season it is, I know what to expect,” Brittney said.

Ryan and Brittney work hard to stay in tune with one another when there is no time for downtime.

She recalls a day during spring planting just after Brooke, their now 2-yearold, was born. She said the day was stressful, and even though Ryan was in

the middle of planting, he picked up on her cues and took the day off to be in the house with her.

“We kind of know each other, and if something needs attention, we can put that on pause to get that taken care of,” she said.

Brittney said Ryan’s parents are a big help too.

Jan, Ryan’s mother, loves spending time with the grandkids and takes the time to create adventures. She will often load the Suburban with supper and all the kids and take it out to the field.

“We get that family time even when it is busy,” Brittney said. “It’s nice to have her encouraging us to take that time.”

The couple’s children include Rylan, 15, Rebecca, 11, Brantley, 8, and Brooke, 2. Jan does all the bookwork on the farm and runs parts. Ron works on the farm daily spring through fall and jokes he “retires” in the winter months.

Ryan and Brittney’s kids help on the farm as they are able. Rylan helps with day-to-day operations. He picks rocks in the spring with the skid loader, makes hay all summer, picks up bales, and sorts and beds the cattle. In the fall, he serves as the main grain cart man and handles all the odd jobs in between.

Rebecca is just getting started on the farm and helps bed the cattle, picks up the bales in the summer, and,

though she’s not driving the tractor yet, she cleans and sweeps the shop and pushes up feed daily for the animals.

Ryan said Rylan and he discuss processes on the farm and he does the same with his parents, using their experience and expertise to help him make his own decisions for how to move forward. Rylan, he said, may bring up different ways to do things and Ryan often listens and lets him try. It’s the same way it has been, and still is, with his own parents as he approaches new technology and new ways of doing things.

“My parents have been around; I’ve farmed with them my entire life,” Ryan said. “It’s just a dayto-day thing. I don’t know any other way.”

He bounces ideas off of Rylan as well as his parents, getting a feel for whether they have tried a particular process before.

“It usually takes a lot of discussion and a lot of back and forth, and it usually ends up with somebody saying, “Fine. We’ll try it,” Ryan said.

It can be tough to balance, but the family said they try to honor one another’s input.

As the couple looks forward to the future, they said the kids know there is a place for them on the farm if they want it, but they do not want to pressure the kids into it or put together any plans now as the kids are still learning.

“Farming, you have to love it because it’s very demanding,” Ryan said. “If your heart’s not in it and you don’t love it, it’s going to be a miserable life.”

For now, while the kids are still young, it is a way for the family to have access to the land and the freedom that comes with it, with kids running around the property, playing on four-wheelers and exploring the river on the land. Rylan also deer hunts on the property.

“It’s the atmosphere,” Ryan said. “The kids learn life cycles. They learn ups and downs of life and they can just run and play.”

Through

“Just having somebody to talk to who knows kind of what you’re going through is a huge part of it,” Ryan said.

Geil to present at the Central Minnesota Farm Show

As farmers implement technology to automate processes on the farm and become more efficient, those same technologies are opening producers to ransomware and cyber security attacks.

Andrew Geil, principal security analyst at Compeer Financial, will discuss vulnerabilities and possible solutions when he speaks at this year’s Central Minnesota Farm Show Feb. 28 through March 1 at the River’s Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud.

“As farmers are getting more and more involved in technology, it becomes a bigger issue,” Geil said.

Geil said hackers can attack heating and ventilation systems, feed control systems, irrigation systems, freezers and power system control technology. Additionally, anything stored on a computer or in the cloud is at risk including tax records, business records and information about suppliers and clients.

Geil said farmers should walk away from the discussion with action steps they can take home and implement.

“The main threat to the ag industry is organized crime and ransomware gangs,” he said.

In September 2021, Geil said the Federal Bureau of Investigation took note of chatter

targeting the food and ag sectors. Then, grain cooperatives in the Midwest were struck by ransomware attacks.

Hackers access the networks, use credentials and install ransomware.

“Even a simple computer in a small office gets taken down by ransomware and can cripple your business for days,” Geil said.

Geil said Compeer Financial considers itself as a financial partner, providing a service to its clients by providing information about protection.

“We have specialists in our company who focus on cybersecurity,” he said. “It’s helpful for us to provide that information so (our clients) can fortify their businesses. In a lot of cases, it’s simply education and awareness.”

Geil will talk not only about the risk facing clients but also stories of how the company’s clients have been impacted and what farmers can do to protect themselves.

Geil will walk through a framework of how hackers map out an attack against a business and will discuss technique and procedures used to breach an organization. Then, Geil will discuss how farmers and ag sector businesses can mitigate those attacks.

Helping grow education

For 25 years, the Central Minnesota Farm Show has been working to provide scholarship dollars for students interested in studying agriculture.

“The future of farming is in our young people, so we wanted to find ways we could use the resources and the benefits of the farm show to attract young people and support them and encourage them to be part of the agricultural industry,” said Bernie Quist, a farm show committee volunteer.

To date, the organization has funded $92,000 in scholarships since it began awarding dollars in 1998.

The CMFS committee began by providing a few $500 scholarships. The goal grew to supply five $1,000 scholarships, and one year, the show was able to fund as many as 10.

Today, Quist said the effort is focused on raising specific dollars earmarked for scholarships. The farm show representatives often garner matching grants from businesses, organizations and attendees. Those matching grants can be used to encourage others to donate to the scholarship effort. The annual goal is to award four to six scholarships each year.

In the past, as many as 70 students have applied for the scholarship. Students living in central Minnesota who are pursuing education in an agriculture-related field are eligible to receive the funds. Scholarships can also be

agriculture industry while also understanding not all kids have the opportunity to participate in farm experiences. They also consider academic participation, GPA, leadership roles and overall involvement.

“The application tries to help us understand their interest in agriculture and what has been their passion for it,” she said.

The organization tries to send a CMFS volunteer to each high school scholarship awards program to meet the student recipient and present the scholarship award.

“I really think that makes an impact for the student recipient … and hopefully inspires future applicants,” Quist said.

In addition to scholarships, Quist said the CMFS is a way for students to take an early step into networking. The students attending the annual CMFS are often FFA members who are volunteering on-site. Quist said those members help prepare for the show and put things away but also spend time talking with the vendors and learning about the various companies, organizations and careers that make up the agriculture industry.

awarded to students who are pursuing degrees in higher education. The scholarship dollars are split between high school and college applicants.

“We try to focus on the character of the person not just the achievements,” Quist said. “We try to discern their passion for agriculture.”

Quist said the committee looks at how students have volunteered or participated in the

“They get a chance to talk with the vendors or farmers who are coming to the show, and it makes great conversation,” Quist said.

94 years of experience

Harms Manufacturing still makes things like they used to

For 94 years, Harms Manufacturing has been making equipment for the agriculture industry. As the company launches its newest land roller drum, they are sticking to the same engineering concepts they have had since the beginning.

“At Harms Manufacturing, we’re still making things like they used to,” said Jerod Nelson, vice president.

The company prides itself on building solid, strong and heavy equipment. As new product is brought to market, Nelson said it is put through rigorous testing to make sure it is up to par. The company makes everything from 1/2-ton to 20-ton hay wagons, bale racks, land rollers and dump rock wagons. They have land rollers all across the United States including Florida, Virginia and Oregon.

Their newest land roller hit the market in January 2022 and features a 30inch drum, up from the initial 24-inch model. The new product is heavier and allows farmers to create a denser soil pack.

“It will help stop soil erosion, create a firmer seed bed, better germination ,” Nelson said.

Harms is also entering a prototype process this spring for the creation of a combined bale rack and wagon. Nelson said it is too soon to know when that will come to market because the equipment be submitted to numerous tests and trials before its release.

For Nelson, the design process for equipment is unique.

“You can go in so many different directions with it if you want,” he said. “We focus on what’s going to be efficient but what’s also going to be economical for the average farmer, we try to get equipment in their hands that they don’t have to mortgage their farm for.”

As the company aims to bring new products to market, Nelson said the

process is thoughtful and well planned and focuses only on those ventures that make the product better and more cost-efficient.

The original design of the Harms wagon, crafted by Hank Harms in 1929, has changed very little through three generations of leadership and decades of business.

“There are new materials and technology, but the engineering has remained the same,” Nelson said. “It shows integrity … We stand behind our product.”

Whether customers are looking for help with planting, harvest, getting hay bales off a field or picking rocks, Nelson said the company offers solutions and equipment for every situation.

In addition to the large-scale work, the company also provides custom work, fashioning small parts, welding, working on the lathe and crafting intricate pieces to exact specifications provided by the customer. Sometimes, customers come in with an idea and they work together with the crew to create the solution.

The shop has made everything from a bell tower carillon to parts that help someone build a new contraption.

In its early years, Harms began as a blacksmith shop in Bertha that attracted customers from as far away as their horses would carry them. Today, customers still come from more than 100 miles away.

Golf carts not just for the greens

Winters Recreation serves the agricultural community

For years, customers have been visiting Winters Recreation, of Sauk Centre, in search of all-terrain vehicles to aid on their farms or haul gear in the field.

“It seems like there are more and more every year,” said Dan Dickinson, a sales representative at Winters Recreation. “It’s everything from fish farmers to manure pumpers, irrigation guys and grain farmers.”

Farmers, who move between multiple locations, may throw a golf-cart style vehicle on a small trailer and haul it to the next job for ease of convenience. The carts are also handy

on solar farms, allowing people to drive in between the rows where a pickup cannot, Dickinson said.

“Some guys are looking to do a little bit of everything,” Dickinson said. “Some guys are picking up sticks in the yard, hauling seed from one building to the other, even getting the mail or traveling in between buildings.”

Winters Recreation carries a number of options to fit the needs of

Dickinson said the Polaris Pro XD is considered a heavy-duty vehicle and is part of the company’s commercial line. The vehicle is finished with heavier tires, heavier shocks and more power and clearance. It has a payload capacity of 2,000 pounds and a towing capacity of 2,500 pounds. The seats are Kevlar-backed and built to last.

“They’re built more for durability than they are for comfort,” he said. “They’re definitely made for wear and tear.”

Understanding how a customer intends to use a vehicle is the first step.

spend time learning about each customer and their needs for equipment.

Dickinson said in some cases, farmers working in minnow ponds may want no doors for ease of access while other customers are concerned with pulling around hoses for manure pumpers. Also, depending on the application, a gas or electric vehicle may be more appropriate; the company carries both. Electric vehicles tend to be quieter and are more in demand for farmers driving through large dairy farms or hog barns.

No matter the use, Dickinson said there is a product that fits the needs of each and every person working in the agriculture industry. It is just a matter of identifying the right piece of equipment for the job.

Considering carbon markets

Stanek to discuss programs during Central Minnesota Farm Show

As consumers demand a higher level of environmental transparency, carbon markets are helping to offset the impact of the agricultural sector.

Bryan Stanek, managing director of new markets for Compeer Financial, will explain carbon markets at this year’s Central Minnesota Farm Show Feb. 28 to March 1 at the River’s Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud.

Stanek will discuss programs available to incentivize farmers.

“The carbon markets are a commerce exchange emerging to help offset the carbon footprint of companies setting goals to do so,” Stanek said. “Consumers are demanding a higher level of environmental social governance.”

Stanek will talk to farmers about ways they can be incentivized to sequester more carbon by utilizing cover crops, avoiding manual tillage, reducing fuel consumption and increasing the precision of fertilizer applications.

“There are opportunities for farmers to look at,” he said.

And, many of those opportunities, which need new or adjusted agronomic practices, can come with financial incentive to the farmer.

“Those are things companies are willing to pay for to meet their environmental social governance goals,” Stanek said.

Stanek said that while agriculture can make an impact on carbon sequestration, there are lots of other contributors to the carbon cycle. But, he said he sees value in farmers doing what they can especially if the cost of the solution can be offset.

“Farmers are stewards of their land and resources; they do a very good job today,” Stanek said. “But as an option, carbon markets give them an alternate revenue source.”

There are several areas of federal funding that provide incentives for farmers to make change.

Stanek said the U.S. Department of Agriculture Partnership for Climate-Smart Commodities is a $3 billion program aimed at developing new climate-smart practices. More than 141 programs were awarded grants. Many of these will occur in the Midwest to influence

farmers to improve their agronomic practices; each program has dollars attached.

Though not all the details are available, the USDA does have a list of awards on its website, and Stanek will review known options.

“Farmers (will) want to educate themselves over the next year of what’s going to emerge from those programs,” Stanek said. “You’re going to have $3 billion dollars of direct influence over commodity production in this nation to incentivize a climate-smart practice.”

The dollars for improvement do not stop there. Additionally, Stanek said the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 offers funding for energy and climate programs including smart technologies on farms.

Another bill signed as part of the last fiscal package contains the Climate Solutions Act, Stanek said.

“That (empowers) the USDA to be more involved with the carbon verifiers,” he said. “It will be the first time we see government influence, insight and involvement in the carbon market verification process.”

Stanek encourages farmers to take an active role in learning about the incentives available to make change on their farms. If farmers can make changes, Stanek said they may be able to use those carbon markets to back their business plans.

“There’s opportunity no matter where you look; there’s risk no matter where you look,” he said. “Farmers should choose what works for them through education and looking through their current practices and how they farm today.”

•Oil mist •Diesel fumes

•Printing powder •Plastic dust

Air King industrial air cleaners are a valuable tool for capturing most airborne nuisance particulate. Our self-contained filtration units continuously pull contaminated air through multiple stages of highly efficient micro-glass filters. The filtered air is then re-circulated back into the working environment without the need for duct work. This results in a cleaner, healthier atmosphere for employees, while saving you money by keeping heated or air-conditioned air inside your facility.
