Haug Kubota expands its reach into agricultural and construction markets
The company, known for its quality machinery, adds expert staff
BY SARAH COLBURN Staff Writer
The Haug Kubota dealership in Willmar is pictured with its line-up of Kubota equipment. Haug Kubota in Willmar is expanding its reach into the agricultural and construction markets. The company is growing as Kubota provides new products for the industry. “People buy from people, especially in our business,” said Brian Lingle, the general manager for Haug Kubota. “Building that relationship with those decision makers is just as, if not more important than, the product itself.” The company has added to its local team and has staff who are experts in the turf industry, agriculture industry and construction industry. The team works together to support, and follow-up, with its customers whether they’re looking for tractors, construction equipment, turf products, utility vehicles, construction tools or hay tools. They also specialize in providing equipment for crop production, livestock, ag-based businesses, seed, fertilizer, ethanol plants and co-ops as well as commercial mowing and land management companies, municipalities and school districts. They’re knowledgeable about the product line and can help customers who come in with an idea of what they want to buy and those just doing their research. The team listens, asks questions about the job they’re trying to accomplish and often times, he said, may suggest a different product that could work better to meet their goals. “They’re dedicated salesmen that call on that industry and understand that industry,” Lingle said. ”We make sure we’re meeting their needs and they’re satisfied with what they acquire.” Additionally, Haug Kubota of Willmar carries the Land Pride line of products. This line provides attachments and implements for the power units including blades, bucket options and tillers, among other things. The Land Pride products bring more versatility to the line, Lingle said. In addition to sales, the company, which has been a Kubota dealer since 1986, offers parts, service, financing, insurance and extended warranties. The service department can also handle warranty work. Additionally, staff can help residential customers looking for equipment to use on their personal property. They provide everything from mowers to snow blowing equipment and can also assist those looking for their own excavator, track loader or skid steer. As the company grows, it continues to hire on new staff. “Whether they’re working on sales, parts or service, we all work together as a team,” Lingle said. He looks for employee candidates with strong work ethic, a positive attitude and strong people skills, things he said he isn’t able to teach. With those qualifications, he said, the company provides training for the available positions. “It’s a great place to work,” he said. “We want people who Kubota RTV utility vehicles sit at the ready for work or play have a good sense of energy when customers come through at the Haug Kubota dealership in Willmar. the door.”

Farmers, lenders work in tandem In Topic on the Hour, Peterson to discuss agricultural financial tools BY SARAH COLBURN Staff Writer
Whether it is the rising cost of chemicals and fertilizers, the impact of higher fuel prices or the impact of COVID-19 on the supply chain and the implications for farmers, they are facing many challenges. Ben Peterson, Ag banker at Kensington Bank, is scheduled to present at this year’s Central Minnesota Farm show, discussing the importance of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency and how to utilize its programs, including the Beginner Farmer program. The company has been involved in the Central Minnesota Farm Show as presenters in the past. In 2019, Nancy Mathiason of Kensington Insurance Agency presented a talk on farm insurance for the show. In order to provide needed services for farmers, financial institutions provide funding for putting in crops, buying, raising and growing livestock, purchasing real estate, renting cropland and buying the large-scale equipment needed to run an agricultural business. The relationship between borrower and lender is paramount. “It goes back to mission and values, being that financial partner, having that relationship, developing and keeping that trust,” said Lisa Peterson, senior vice president of lending at Kensington Bank. Ag lenders industry-wide will work one-on-one with farmers, depending on the complexity of their operation. Some farms have more diversification which can add to the complexity, while crop farmers may have to take into account the costs of renting farm land. Oftentimes, she said, the lender along with their farm business managers will sit in on monthly meetings that include the farmer, their feed vendors or a cooperative, to check in and discuss how to make the business more productive. “It’s quite a team depending on the operation and the needs,” Peterson said. Most farmers, she said, need an operating line with the bank in order to operate and having a strong partnership with a local banker who can also serve as a resource for not only capital, but information that keeps the operation moving forward. During times of expansion, she said, the relationship with the banking team comes to the forefront as farmers look to grow their business. “You work with them very closely and have access to their private, personal information,” Peterson said. “Those relationships are so huge – developing those relationships and being that partner.”
Rachel Swenson manned the Kensington Bank booth at the Central Minnesota Farm Show in 2020.
Lisa Peterson is the senior vice president of lending at Kensington Bank. ALL PHOTOS SUBMITTED Peterson said lenders also work with young people looking to join the farming industry. As farms become larger, it can be challenging for young people to get a footing. “If they don’t have a generational family farm, it’s very hard for them to get into the business, to purchase land or purchase livestock,” she said. For lenders, she said it’s important to keep that customer base and be a partner to incoming generations. “[Lenders can be] a part of that legacy or beginning,” she said. They can provide financial opportunities for young people and can also be the liaison between the potential farmer and the USDA’s Farm Service Agency. “By allowing that individual to have access to those funds to get into the business and hopefully, long- term, have that be a viable operation,” she said.
As farms consolidate and grow larger, she said providing ongoing support to farm families and smaller dairy farmers is equally as important. Lenders can be creative in their structure of agricultural lending, and understanding what it takes to put in crops, care for them, harvest them, raise an animal or run a dairy, is important. “It’s again, the mission of a community bank,” she said. “You want to serve the people in your community.” Between working with crop and livestock operators, lenders work with producers of all sizes and types, with crop farmers who may have 500 acres or those with several thousand. Their work extends to all layers of agri-business, from implement dealers to seed sales. “Lenders and farmers/producers work in tandem,” Peterson said. As the two-day 2022 Central Minnesota Farm Show progresses, Kensington Bank’s Ben Peterson will be one of at least 13 scheduled presenters. In addition to the USDA’s Beginner Farmer program mentioned above, he will be discussing a variety of financing options for land purchases. He will explain the various financial tools available to farmers. His presentation is slated for noon on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

Dairyland Supply: Your go-to short line farm equipment dealer BY SARAH COLBURN Staff Writer
Dairyland Supply has been working for nearly 50 years to put the needs of local farmers first. “No matter what part they’re looking for, we do the best we can to find it, order it, we do the best we can to keep their operation running smoothly,” said LaShana Tschida, who’s in the parts sales department at the company. “If it wasn’t for the farmers, we wouldn’t have a business here. The farmers are number one.” From broken manure pumps and spreaders to TMR mixers, Tschida said the staff at Dairyland Supply understand all the complications and spiraling costs that come with downed equipment and time away from the farm. The company carries an extensive inventory of parts that they keep on-hand to fix some of the most common problems, and some uncommon ones, too. Their parts staff has more than 45 years of combined experience in helping customers find exactly the right part. “We work hard to find the parts and if we don’t have them on hand, we get them here as quickly as we can,” she said. Dairyland Supply carries PTO parts, sprockets and hubs, drive belts, Timken bearings, STIHL Power Tools, bulk chain and Digi-Star scale parts, as well as parts for the various equipment lines they sell. They carry brands on-hand including Artex, Houle, Kuhn and Kuhn Knight, Nuhn, Supreme, Penta, Hagedorn, Ritchie, Polydome, Jamesway, Valmetal, Balzer, Fair Mfg., Roto-Mix and more. One of the lines they provide is Vermeer, and Tschida wants customers to know that in 2019, Vermeer Corporation purchased Schuler Manufacturing and has retained the company’s manufacturing facility in Iowa, continuing to create American-made machines. The equipment is made at the same factory and the quality has been upgraded to Vermeer’s standards, Tschida said.

Combined, they have more than 45 years of experience helping customers find the right parts. PHOTOS SUBMITTED Vermeer is a manufacturer of high-quality feeding solutions and Dairyland Supply carries its TMR mixers. In addition to offering a full line of parts and equipment at Dairyland Supply, the local business also offers service, both on site at the shop and on the farm, saving customers time. They have a TMR service truck and can send a technician out to local farms to repair breakdowns. Dairyland Supply, located in Sauk Centre, has been creating relationships with farmers, and growing with them for almost 50 years. Over the decades, the company has kept up with changes in technology and efficiency, providing farmers with new and used equipment that makes farming easier and more productive. The company offers everything from feed handling and animal care equipment to material handling (manure and forage). They offer products and equipment for cow comfort, watering, and new barn products and expansions including everything from free stalls to curtain ventilation systems. Dairyland Supply is your go-to short line farm equipment dealer.

Farmers protect investment with crop insurance BY SARAH COLBURN Staff Writer
When it comes to crop insurance, the goal for farmers is to protect their investment. “Everybody’s situation is different,” said Steve Leiser, owner of Bag to Bin Crop Insurance in Eagle Bend. “Crop insurance is used to protect farmers from a loss. It’s just like when you buy house insurance and the house burns down, you want to cover that loss. That’s what crop insurance is doing too – it doesn’t make farmers a huge profit at the end of the year because it’s helping them cover their cost – it’s there to protect the investment, the investment they put into that ground.” With multi-peril crop insurance, each grower’s policy is based on their specific history of yields. The farmer can choose the level of coverage they want, from 50 to 80 percent. If, for example, a farmer chooses a coverage level that protects 70 percent of what they’re averaged, if they’ve produced 150 bushels of corn per acre per year over the last decade, they’ll get an insurance payment to cover the difference in profit they would have made if they produce anything under 105 bushels. According to Leiser, most farmers choose a coverage level of between 70 and 80 percent. When farmers figure out the cost for the premium and divide it by the acres of land they have, the cost per acre for the insurance protects the far greater investment of product and labor going into that acre. As a farm insurance specialist, Steve Leiser knows that finding the proper level Once farmers visit with their agent and their main insurance of coverage is important, and that every farmer needs to talk with their agent policy is configured, there are a number of things farmers can choose annually to fit their situation for that particular year. Farm show pays dividends
Bieringer’s decades as vendor, promoter of CMFS BY SARAH COLBURN Staff Writer
Full-scale milking equipment, a silo loader, a manure pump – John Bieringer has disassembled it, assembled it, and squeezed it all – just barely sometimes – through the doors of the Central Minnesota Farm Show, testing the size and space limits of the facility in an effort to give farmers hands-on access to technology. For more than four decades, Bieringer has been a force behind the large-scale farm technology installations at the farm show, beginning in the 1970s when he brought large-scale equipment to Crossroads Mall in St. Cloud for what was then called the Central Minnesota Electric Show. The only year he missed the farm show, from the early 1970s to the year he sold Dairyland Supply in 2017, was the year he had a liver transplant and was physically unable to go. “It was a way for us to expand our business geographically, to draw in more customers and show things, instead of just from a brochure,” he said. “There were no videos or internet back then and advertising was limited. We reached people we would have never been able to reach.” For Bieringer, it was about building relationships and getting to know the farmers in the region. When he first began, he said, the farmers would bring along their spouses and kids. They’d make a day out of it, venturing through the mall to see the farm show and then heading for lunch and shopping. In the later years, he’d see those kids accompanying their parents to the show, in anticipation that they’d one day take over the farm. Then, he saw those kids grow into adults and shepherd children of their own to the show. He got to truly know families, sometimes three generations deep, because of his work at the show. “It was always fun to see and help them through the transition and modernization of their farming business,” he said. “There were customers who made it a point to come by the booth every year just to say ‘hi.’” In the early 1970s, the products he brought to the show were some of the first to provide electrification of chores that had previously been done just by hand. “It was all about things you could do with electricity,” he said. He set up pieces of equipment in the hallways of the mall and people would come by and ask questions – farmers and the general public. He once had a guy ask him about a manure pump, wondering what kind of snowblower that was. “It was a good show back then … a day out for them besides looking at equipment,” he said. “It was a good day to get away from the farm and enjoy.” Through the years, the equipment Bieringer brought to the show became more mechanized as farms and dairies grew. He began to bring TMR equipment and examples of milking parlors.
John Bieringer missed only one year (when he needed a liver transplant) of the Central Minnesota Farm Show from the early 1970s through 2017. Now, he is enjoying retirement and focusing on his faith, sharing what he considers a miracle with others. PHOTOS SUBMITTED
“The equipment got so much bigger we ended up renting a larger space to bring in some of those larger pieces,” he said. “It was good to come inside on a winter day and kick the tires and see the features and benefits of it.” The show, organized by the St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce, paid dividends for Bieringer. While he expanded his relationships with farmers, he also grew to rely more and more on his staff and crew. He was a member of the chamber and served as vice chair and then chair of the Central Minnesota Farm Show committee, helping organize the event for area farmers. In 2007, Bieringer got sick with a liver disease that was tied back to a disease from his childhood. He spent February and March, when he would have been doing farm show stuff, as well as April and most of May, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, seeking care and awaiting a transplant.
In the later years, he’d see those kids accompanying their parents to the show, in anticipation that they’d one day take over the farm. Then, he saw those kids grow into adults and shepherd children of their own to the show. He got to truly know families, sometimes three generations deep, because of his work at the show.
He underwent test after test and radiation and then on April 8, 2008 – he said he gave his life to Jesus Christ. He purchased his funeral plots and picked out his pall bearers. “I needed to make my life right with the Lord,” he said. He hadn’t been a regular church-goer, left the church in the 70s or the early 80s. A good friend came to visit him, thinking it may be one of their last days together. They had a frank talk about faith and what it means to believe in Jesus. “It got to my soul and I recognized I was a sinner who needed help,” Bieringer said. “Whether my life was going to be saved on this Earth or not, that was one thing, but I didn’t want to spend an eternity in Hell.” BIERINGER | continued on page 20

BIERINGER | from page 17 While his staff took over the business and Bieringer tended to his health and his faith, he said he never once had to think about what was happening in the office and at the farm show – he knew everything was taken care of. “If it wouldn’t have been for people who knew I was having a transplant, my customers wouldn’t have known I wasn’t there for 6 to 8 months,” he said. “I never had a stress or a worry of how my business was taken care of.” Eleven days after Bieringer handed over his life to the Lord, he received news that a liver was on its way. He received a donor liver from an 84-year-old man. He turned his life around. He became a follower, he took classes, he studied the Bible, he joined a church and he shared his faith and the series of events that happened immediately following his decision to follow Christ, something he said that in sharing the details of it becomes undeniable to others that he received a miracle. “Him saving my life here on this Earth and having my life saved for eternity, gives you a wonderful, wonderful peace,” he said. “It just reaffirms my faith in God, that He has a purpose for me here.”

Farm show by the half century - Kroll takes dedication to the next step BY SARAH COLBURN Staff Writer
For more than 50 years, Ginny Kroll has been working at the Central Minnesota Farm Show. She first started at the show in 1965, the year she was hired by the St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce. The chamber took over management of the annual agricultural event shortly after she joined the team. “We had an ag committee and the board of directors said ‘Let’s do it,” she said. “It was our way of supporting the agriculture industry, the agri-business industry.” For five decades, Kroll never missed a show; even the year she fell on the ice and needed rehabilitation and a walker, she showed up and participated. Now, Kroll has been retired for a handful of years, but she still volunteers at the annual gathering. The only thing that’s stopped her for half a century is the year COVID-19 restrictions shut down the event. In the early years, Kroll estimates between 50 and 75 volunteers helped with the show and today it’s more than 100. “I don’t miss all the work but I really do miss the volunteers,” Kroll said. “The Chamber has a really great group of volunteers; they all have their areas they’re great in.” Through the years, Kroll even roped her brother and her sister-in-law into volunteering. When Laura Wagner began as the special events coordinator for the chamber she sat down
with Kroll, who had already retired, to learn about the ins and outs of the show. “I tried to pick her brain,” Wagner said. “Just her knowledge of the farming community itself and the different exhibitors, the general flow, how to handle volunteers, the best way to set things up, she was just so knowledgeable.” When Kroll first started, there were roughly 50 vendors or exhibitors who made up the show. Once the St. Cloud Civic Center opened, the show moved there and grew exponentially. Today, it’s made up of more than 350 exhibitors. “The industry has changed, the equipment has gotten a lot bigger, it’s more computerized, the farming industry has changed, the agriculture industry has changed,” Kroll said. She remembers when the first pieces of big equipment came into the show and, with the move to what was then the civic center, she said it opened the opportunity for all kinds of vendors to bring in equipment. “We were in seventh heaven when that opened; then, we knew we could grow so big, there was nothing too big that we could not get in there,” she said. In fact, just moving into the space takes an entire day. The exhibitors include everyone from implement and seed dealers to bankers, car dealerships, dairy princesses giving away ice cream, and products made from hemp to agricultural associations and organizations. Exhibitors come from across Minnesota, Wisconsin and Canada. The show now

includes seminars which were added during Kroll’s time with the event. For this year, there are seminars practically on the hour every hour for each of the two days. One thing has always remained the same: Admission to the show is free and it’s a commitment the chamber has made for decades. To pull it off, volunteers do everything from taping off the floors where the machinery and exhibitor booths go to assisting with equipment, supplying food for the hospitality room, doing surveys and guiding speakers. Though Kroll did a variety of things each year, for her, one of the most memorable was visiting with exhibitors to find out what the show was doing well and where it could improve. “(It was a chance for) me to go and talk to every individual vendor, thank them for being an exhibitor and find out how the show went and what changes needed to be made,” she said. “The

Midwest Machinery expands, remains true to hometowns
Central MN Farm Edition | February 19-22, 2022 • 29
We are proud to support the Central MN Farms! Central Bi-Products is a full-service rendering company that operates out of three locations to produce safe, sustainable feed ingredients
BY SARAH COLBURN Staff Writer
Midwest Machinery Co has nearly doubled its number of locations and its number of employees as of the first week of 2022. The Central Minnesota company acquired two different dealerships this year and with it, on-boarded 13 new storefronts and 350 to 400 new employees. “It’s more inventory, services, more knowledgeable employees we have for our customers,” said Kate Samuelson, HR assistant/recruiter at Midwest Machinery Co. The acquisition propels the company to a spot as a top competitor in the market, she said. Midwest Machinery Co is an agriculture and construction equipment services dealer specializing in self-propelled forage harvester sales. It’s also a full-service John Deere dealership. The company offers new and used equipment financing through John Deere Financial. Now with 30 locations through Minnesota and Wisconsin, and a little more than 700 employees, the company is dedicated to staying true to its family owned and operated roots. “We’re true to the hometown,” Samuelson said. “You walk in, we know your name, we know what equipment you have. (We’re) being that resource for what our customers need.” To keep its The Central Minnesota company acquired two commitment to different dealerships this year and with it, on- hometowns, the boarded 13 new storefronts and 350 to 400 new company has retained employees. the employees in each location as it has made its acquisitions. And, its leadership has placed an emphasis on communication. Upper-level management, Samuelson said, has been doing a lot of site visits, getting to know the new employees and learning how each location functions. “We’re not walking in day one and saying, ‘this is how we run,’” she said. “It’s a continued adventure to get to know who they are and what they do best and how that fits in with what our successes are and what their successes have been.” The new venture will allow employees to have growth within the company as more support positions become available. The company has also been able to offer medical plans to employees where they can choose their individual coverage level with pricing as low as free in some cases. Hiring and retaining skilled employees has always been a challenge in the high-demand industry of mechanics and service technicians. Midwest Machinery Co has partnerships with high schools and colleges to entice students into the career field. They have internships available and welcome students with training, experience or schooling in diesel-power engines, power sports, small engines and medium and heavy truck work. “Our partnerships are very important because there’s such a lack of students going into these programs,” Samuelson said. As the pandemic shut down other companies, Midwest Machinery Co continued to operate as an essential business. “The farming world didn’t get shut down,” Samuelson said. “Seeds still had to get in the ground, harvest still had to happen. It’s really an industry that doesn’t stop.”

From farming to helping farmers Schuerman comes full circle BY SARAH COLBURN Staff Writer
J.D. Schuerman grew up on a farm outside of Danvers. He rode his bike into town, played baseball, trapped gophers and shot hoops with the neighborhood kids. He built BMX bike jumps, and in the summer, he was busy with farm life. His mornings consisted of picking rock, baling hay and straw, cultivating in the tractor. Growing up, he had a choice of two radio stations as he made his way up and down the rows. Today Schuerman, the only sibling who doesn’t farm, is still involved in agriculture, just in a different way. He serves as a risk advisor with Advance Trading and he works with farmers, helping them market their grain and manage the risk associated with the process. He’s spoken in the past about risk at the Central Minnesota Farm Show. “(It’s a) full circle thing for me,” he said. As he works with clients, he can talk about their realities. He understands what it’s like to spray, he remembers plowing the fields in high school and helping with the sugar beet harvest late into the night. His dad grew corn and soybeans and was an early pioneer into sugar beets. Though he said he had a knack for breaking things on the farm – not fixing them – he fondly recalls running corn, doing tillage work and running the defoliator for the beets. He still goes back and helps with harvest when he can. “Harvest was always fun,” he said.“There was an energy in the air during harvest time.” For Schuerman, planning for the risk and reward of that harvest is how he spends his time. He discusses put options and call options with his clients. “It’s a learning curve,” he said. “I really coach guys.” He spends a lot of time up front, sitting down with his customers, providing education. J.D. Schuerman grew up on a farm outside “I never enter a trade without them understanding,” he said. of Danvers and now serves as a risk advisor, What he focuses on is providing a floor for their grain. The process, he said, is not helping farmers market their grain and very intuitive but he knows it well. He often encourages his clients to work with him manage the risk associated with the process. for a year to understand the tools and how they can benefit from them. PHOTOS SUBMITTED “You can go to bed at night knowing you’ve managed the risk in your operation,” he said. SCHUERMAN |continued on page 31

Old Glory, country style
Courtesy Metro Creative Connection BY SARAH COLBURN Staff Writer
The American and Minnesota State Flag fly on a cloudy, windy day on a farm South of St. Cloud.
For many farmers and other country people, patriotism is near and dear to their hearts. Driving through the countryside, the American flag can often be seen waving in the breeze and lit up at night on family farms, hobby farms and country acreage around the region. That stands to reason, as many farmers are veterans – or at minimum, they know some who are. According to the 2017 Census of Agriculture, the number of farmers who have served in the United State military was 370,619. “The flag, to tons of people, is their sign of freedom; so many people have fought for this flag in the military, and families have carried that through,” said Tim Coil of Coil's Flags, Flagpoles and Custom Embroidery. Coil has worked with many farmers and others in the country over the years in his shop. They all have their own reasons for wanting Old Glory to fly in their yard. One farmer from Princeton put his reasons quite simply, saying, “It’s the right thing to do.” Coil has his own reasons for patriotism and works with flags day in and day out. Though he never served in the military, he has always been very patriotic. He feels it is important to pay honor and respect to those who have. He honors the veterans in his family with images of them in uniform displayed on the back of his truck. His father, Vernon Coil, was a WWII veteran, his father-in-law, Louie Dahlmeier, served in the Korean War and his oldest brother, Terry Coil, was in Vietnam. He has his father’s uniform on display in his store. “People need to be patriotic; people need to be nice to each other and being nice to each other is part of being a patriotic person,” he said. “This is drifting away from us, especially in today’s time, people need to be more patriotic and help one another.” He loves seeing flags flying all around. “It shows me that people care about their freedom,” he said.
A newly installed flag is raised near fuel barrels on a farm east of Rice. He has connections to the country in addition to his occupation. “I grew up on a farm and I was always proud of that,” he said. “Even though it was a lot of work, it taught me about what hard work is and the results are great and satisfying.” Whether it’s farmers or veterans – or both, Coil feels they work hard to fight for the American flag and show what it represents. “It’s neat to see all these veterans out there,” he said. “This is the flag they fought for when they were in the military; words can’t really express the true feeling of when these things go up in the air.”

The American flag is flown on a farm near Princeton.
The first American flag design was approved by Congress on June 14, 1777. It had 13 stripes, which represented the original 13 colonies of the United States. A new flag flies on a farm near Watkins. ALL PHOTOS SUBMITTED
