Monson, Norton share their passion for woodworking through toys BY AMY KYLLO | STAFF WRITER
KELLOGG — Stepping into the toy-making shop at LARK Toys is like entering a modern, branch office of Santa’s workshop. The smell of sawdust fills the air, and instead of two elves, Tim Monson and Cameron Norton work craft out of wood.
The two rooms of the shop are neat yet feel comfortably lived in. On one wall hangs patterns for the toys. Stacks of pine lumber lie on the floor, and sprinkled throughout the workshop are toys on a shelf,
in a corner or standing on a work counter being assembled, providing a festive feel. Monson and Norton work together to make all the inhouse-made wooden toys sold at LARK Toys in Kellogg. “It’s a labor of love,” Monson said. “Just to be able to do something like this every day ... is amazing. ... There’s many different jobs I could have done throughout the years. I couldn’t leave (LARK

They make wooden blocks, puzzles, push toys, little toys which include animals, vehicles, tractors, airplanes, trains, toy sets and the long-standing pull toys. “Everything that gets cut out here is by hand, and everything that gets put together is by hand,” Monson said.

“That’s special because there’s not much like that in the world anymore.” Monson started making toys when he 21. He learned woodworking from a man he worked for refinishing furniture. It was Monson’s sister-in-law who heard about the job at LARK Toys. “The first day I was blown away,” Monson said. “By the second day, I was just fascinated, and 36 years later, I’m still fascinated.” Monson’s counterpart Norton has been a toymaker at LARK Toys for almost two years. Monson said he hopes to see Norton take over the reins of

the toymaking. Norton said he found his fascination for woodworking while doing projects with his dad. He said he remembers getting a little toolbox when he was a child and he enjoyed building things more than playing with them. Norton grew up on a dairy farm. Before becoming a toymaker, he worked in carpentry, framing houses after he completed high school. Then, he returned to the dairy farm until his family sold their milking herd and switched to crops and beef cattle. He still works on the farm when he is not working at LARK Toys.
Cameron Norton works on putting together a unicorn Nov. 16 in the toy workshop at LARK Toys in Kellogg. Norton has taken his woodworking hobby and turned it into a career of making toys.
“My wife used to joke around how it’d be perfect for me to work down here,” Norton said. Now that the joke has become reality, Norton said getting to turn his hobby into his job is why he does the work. “This is what I used to do,” Norton said. “Somebody would ask me to make a toy (and) that’s what I would mess around all night long doing.” Norton’s fellow toy maker Monson helped craft the LARK Toy store’s multi-colored, handcarved, wooden carousel earlier in his career. Monson helped with assembly, gluing together
the carousel animals before they were carved. “I didn’t know how to glue up a carousel animal,” he said. “Not a clue. Now you can just Google everything, and there it is. But we didn’t have that opportunity back then.” In the toyshop, each week, Monson and Norton make one to two sets of 24 toys. They decide which toys to make by checking inventory. Once the supply of a specific toy dwindles to six or less, it is time to make more.

After being sheered, the fiber goes through a multi-step process before reaching customers. First it is washed and dehaired. Otto knows how to do this, but sends most of her fiber to a fiber mill. However, she often saves the baby fleeces to do herself. ly “I like to hand dehair the really soft baby fleeces because it’s just a treat for me to work with that,” she sai said. id. Once the fiber is washed and dehaired, if yarn is going to be multi-colored, the fiber is dyed at this point. If the yarn is going to be one color, the fiber is dyed after it is woven. The next step is for the fiber to be carded to align the fibers in one direction. When Otto does the carding, she incorporates colors of fiber together that will eventually become multi-colored skeins. After the fiber is carded, Otto uses her spinning wheel to spin it into yarn or leaves it as batts. Once it is woven into yarn, the fiber is washed again. Otto is undecided on what she will do in the future, but she wants goats and fiber art to be part of her continuing story. She said she has learned, hard work, patience and interpersonal skills through her business. “You have to work at something for a while before seeing a direct reward from that,” she said. “It’s not like you’re going to do a hard job and you’re going to see the payoff right away.” (Right) One of Audra Otto’s knitted scarves wraps on a dress form Nov. 1 in her home near Harmony. A retailer who sells Otto’s fiber products said that highlighting Otto’s work in their store has boosted business.

Welcome to Solar Connection. Services Install for businesses, homes and farms
Testimonial Solar Panels for the Passive House: John & Nancy After years of searching for the perfect home that fits their needs or would be excited to renovate, John and Nancy decided to build! Around that same time, they attended the Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center’s presentation about the Passive House movement – an exceptionally rigorous building standard that results in a home which, using the latest technologies, has the smallest carbon footprint currently possible. The concept hit home. John says he doesn’t consider himself an “environmentalist” per se; he just believes in living within his means. “We believe in energy conservation. We believe in protecting our valuable non-renewable resources. But we’re also big believers in electricity and living the lifestyle we’ve come to know within reason, but just to do it more efficiently and more economically.”...
