FFA KIDS FEED CLASSMATES, EXPLORE AG CAREERS PHOTOS SUBMITTED
Students Daniel Walz (front, from left) and Sam Harren; (Back) Alex Fussy and Jacob Hawn pick corn from the school fields. The corn is grown in addition to the school’s other produce and is used to provide two to four corn lunches during the school year. Approximately 65 to 70 dozen ears need to be harvested and husked per meal.
BY SARAH COLBURN STAFF WRITER
HOLDINGFORD – The Holdingford FFA organization is not only giving students opportunities to explore farm careers firsthand, their work also supports the local school lunch program. Students in the FFA, in conjunction with those in the school’s agriculture classes, operate multiple gardens on the school grounds. Horticulture students and those doing independent studies do the planting in the green-
house and they start early- and late-season crops in the high tunnel. Students, including FFA members, not only care for the seeds and get the plants into the ground, they tend to them during the summer months and harvest the crops each fall. The efforts, John Roberts, advisor of the Holdingford FFA said, send fresh produce straight to the school kitchen. In one summer, the program produces enough cucumbers to create 100 to 130 gallons of pickles that are used for school lunches. The program garners 2,100 to 2,500 pounds of produce a year.
“The students see the amount of work that goes into everything,” Roberts said. “They see the whole cycle from start to finish, the produce didn’t just come from the grocery store’s produce aisle. Roberts’ FFA organization takes the effort a step further and he works with students who raise steers for butchering to contribute to the school’s lunch program. The Holdingford FFA is 46 members strong this year, and Roberts said the students working on their Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) projects have a wide variety of focus.
Bethany Gerads of Albany: Bethany Gerads, tired from a day of school followed by her evening job, picked up the phone at 8 p.m. She was just about ready for sleep, but talked about how her FFA experience has given her a true appreciation for the amount of work that goes into food production. She’s raising two steers that will be butchered this fall to provide meat for the school lunch program. She bought the animals at the livestock sales barn in Albany as bottle-fed calves back in June of 2020. She bottle-fed them, raised them up and now, through her SAE project, is tracking their growth, health and the amount of feed she gives them. She’s able to produce a rate of grain and feed conversion for her steers. Gerads takes pride in her work, knowing
that soon, it will feed her classmates. “It took a lot of determination, but it’s worth it,” she said. “It’s cool because the meat served at the school is locally grown and farm to table.” In the summer, Gerads helps with the garden at the school. She also works with her dad’s beef cattle. She cleans pens, feeds animals, helps vaccinate and implant. She also does fieldwork, cutting and raking hay, running the chisel plow and hauling bales. “It’s shown more of the work that goes into it,” she said. Before her involvement with FFA, she milked cows and fed calves and helped with chores, but the experience, she said, has made her more involved and aware of what’s going on around her.

from page 9 “Without her mentorship, I would most likely not have even considered the State Degree, let alone the American Degree,” Pundsack said. To obtain an America Degree through FFA, a student must first complete a State Degree. At the chapter level, students can complete the Discovery, Greenhand and Chapter FFA Degrees. The first three achievements are relatively easy, especially if a student is enrolled in agriculture classes and participates in FFA chapter activities. Earning a State Degree is a higher distinction and requires more work. A student must meet the qualifications of the former degrees and also have made satisfactory progress on their SAE. The American Degree brings the highest honor awarded to FFA members who have demonstrated the highest level of commitment to FFA and made significant accomplishments in their SAE. Welle worked on her family’s dairy farm near Melrose to complete her SAE requirements, served the chapter as an officer for three years and served as a regional officer for a year. “I loved FFA,” Welle said. “FFA FFA was my whole life in high school. ol. I stayed so busy with it.” One of Welle’s favorite activities vities was safety day, when the FFA chapapter brought a presentation to local al fourth graders about farm safety. Welle graduated high school in 2019 and is currently a teller at Central Minnesota Credit Union in Paynesville. She is hoping to return to college at the University of Madison-Wisconsin this fall. Pundsack’s SAE was a combi-nation of entrepreneurial beef and nd placement in dairy. “Since I have been in sixth grade, rade, I’ve been raising and selling dairy steers and also started a small beef herd that I help manage with my dad,” Pundsack said. “I also own about 20% of those animals.” Pundsack has also worked partt time at a nearby dairy farm since he was a freshman. “I worked with Dan Atkinson and my uncle, Kurt Pundsack, on the Atkinson Acres dairy farm,” Pundsack said. He said his family was a big help as he worked to achieve his goals, too. “My family has helped out with chores when I couldn’t do them or when I needed help with bigger projects like cleaning and bedding, dehorning and castrating and loading up cattle,” Pundsack said. “Now, my younger

siblings ha havee started taking some oownn ership and even started raising their own steers.” Pundsack is currently attending the University of Wisconsin–Madison studying mechanical engineering. “I don’t have concrete future plans,” Pundsack said. “I would very much like to get back into agriculture in some way.” After being recognized virtually at the national convention, Welle and Pundsack received their formal certificates in the mail and a chain to hang on their FFA jackets.
Julia Welle received her FFA American Degree in October 2020 after completing the rigorous application and achievement process. Welle graduated from Melrose High School and FFA in 2019.
