For example, each year after the Kiddie Parade, its participants traditionally visit Family Fun Night.
One part of that community celebration tradition will change after this year’s event is completed.
Event chair Char Monroe has announced she will be stepping down after many years of organizing kid-friendly activities. She has been working with Karen Eherenman and Tiffany Neis on a transition plan.
Eherenman is a Foley Elementary School early childhood family education and early childhood special education teacher. Neis is an elementary school teacher.
“I couldn’t think of two better people to take over an event that’s been designed for kids,” Monroe said.
The trio sat around Monroe’s dining room
During that meeting, Monroe’s mantra of “be prepared” was evident as she showed off an emergency envelope filled with Band-Aids and a small packet of Kleenex, two items she always has available during the event.
And when it came to reviewing the nittygritty details of what is going in this year’s kid goodie bags, Monroe did not miss a beat when she breezed through pricing options for the different types of treats.
“It is time for me to get out,” Monroe said. “But deep down, I really don’t want to give it up. I’m going to be 77 years old, and it’s time for me to slow down. Tiffany is so qualified and so is Karen.”
Monroe said she started working with Family Fun Night in the 1990s, when daughter, Gina, was crowned Miss Foley.

Editor’s note: Benton County News editor Jakob Kounkel contributed to this article.
The Foley Civic Group, which organizes Foley Fun Days each summer, did something different this year with two community recognition honors.
The area’s citizen of the year and parade grand marshal selections were combined.
During the June 21 parade, resident Joe Kaproth will be recognized with both titles, said Juanita Beauchamp, a member of the Foley Civic Group.
When Kaproth accepted the Foley citizen of the year award, he was surprised, humbled and honored.
In a brief and impromptu acceptance speech offered May 18, Kaproth mentioned there are many Foley natives who are just as, if not more, deserving of the award.
He was honored at a Foley Area Chamber of Commerce event at Falcon National Bank in Foley.
Kaproth has lived in Foley for nearly his entire life. He has served on the city’s fire department for 38 years, 10 of which were as assistant fire chief and 10 as chief.
He is also a member of American Legion Post 298, serving as post commander.
Kaproth has stepped forward as a community volunteer in various ways, especially for CARE and St. John’s Catholic Church.
While the award puts a microscope on the past year of Kaproth’s life in Foley and the many ways he contributed to the betterment of the city and its people, it is also a reflection of his lifetime commitment to the community he loves.
“This man’s heart
and soul is embedded in our wonderful, rural community,” said Sharon Kipka, a lifelong Foley resident, who nominated Kaproth for the award. “During the past year, Kaproth has given hours and hours of volunteer services …, celebrating love of country, community and commitment to his fellow citizens.”
With a nod to community service, Kipka said Kaproth takes the lead on veteran memorial tours during Memorial Day for Foley Public Schools students – a volunteer effort that epitomizes his commitment to community.
“We look at community involvement in the past and now,” Beauchamp said, referring to the criteria used by the Foley Civic Group when it selects its parade grand marshal.
“We also look at the parade theme.”
The “Denim & Diamonds”
themed parade begins promptly at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 21. The start time is new this year, Beauchamp said, adding that parade units will start lining up at 5 that night. The parade theme describes casual and formal wear
worn together in an ostentatious way, similar to a costume that celebrates the best of both clothing worlds.
Jeans and gemstone jewelry, sequins and upscale pieces combine to give people a comfortable and creative option for dressing up.
Fashion shows and galas often use denim and diamonds as a theme, offering an alternative to typical formal wear that can become boring.
“I would say we have 60 parade applications right now,” Beauchamp said. “We have nine bands plus Foley.”

Foley Lions Club members know an allhands-on-deck effort is required with Foley Fun Days booth staffing.
The popular hamburger shack requires multiple people working the four daily shifts.
“Most of our Lions work at least one shift,” said Lynn Pagel, a longtime stand organizer and committee member. “We start scheduling shifts a month before Fun Days. Some members work five or six shifts.”
It takes several hours to set up the stand, Pagel said. It is stored in a farm building owned by a Foley Lions Club member and brought in the day before the community celebration. It is then cleaned and organized.
“A four-person committee manages the logistics,” Pagel said.
Food and beverages are ordered weeks before and delivered the first morning of the festival.
The stand is currently getting an update with a new refrigeration unit and storage bins for pop and water.
Pagel said Lion Donna Woolard has worked at the food booth for 25 years. Pagel has been involved 21 years.
“We have always served burgers from Grand Champion Meats,” Pagel
said. “Dutch Maid Bakery in Sauk Rapids provides the buns. A burger with pepperjack cheese and our special sautéed onions is a favorite.”
Hamburger sales and beer proceeds support a number of Foley community programs.
“The stand provides funding for five graduating senior scholarships, lunch and supper for local law enforcement and the fire department, the school milk program, reading incentives, the marching band, the bike rodeo and local food shelf,” Pagel said. “Throughout the year, we also do other fundraising.”
Pagel said in past years, the hamburger
and beer stand used to be the community service organization’s main fundraising activity.
“It was very important to make enough to cover five $1,000 scholarships,” she said.
The Foley Lions Club was founded in 1958 and has 37 members.
When Foley Fun Days wraps up, members take inventory of booth supplies to see what is needed for next year’s celebration.
“We keep track of how many hamburgers are cooked and how many buns, pickles and onions are used so we can plan for next year,” Pagel said. “During the event, many people come daily and order burgers.”
Prospective princesses recently received the royal treatment at a first-ofits-kind community education event.
The Foley Ambassador Program teamed up with Foley Community Education to sponsor a princess camp May 17.
Guests attending the event were invited to wear their favorite dress.
“What little girl doesn’t want to be a princess?” said Amanda Lewandowski, ambassador coordinator.
Lewandowski said current royalty and this year’s candidates attended the event to promote future interest in the ambassador program.
She credited community education director Alyssa Stewart with the idea.
“Our program promotes volunteer work in the community,” Lewandowski said. “When the public sees our girls, someone may think of someone they know who may want to apply to be a royalty candidate.”
Stewart said she wanted to organize an event that would give the community the opportunity to learn more about the program. She used a princess camp in a Wisconsin school district as an event model.
“Foley Community Education helps advertise Foley Fun Days,” Stewart said, referring to local ties to the summer event and the community. “We partner
with Foley Police Chief Katie McMillin, running registration for the bike safety rodeo, and we host the Foley Ambassador Program at our high school auditorium.”
Lewandowski said candidates’ involvement in the event at the Foley Intermediate School cafeteria built communication and community event participation skills before coronation of new ambassadors Saturday, June 17.
“The candidates were required to interact with the young girls who signed up,” Lewandowski said. “It showed that volunteering can be fun and worthwhile.”
When the Foley Ambassador Program begins its preparations for a new year, Lewandowski said a key goal is giving prospective candidates a good taste of what it is like to become a program ambassador.
“We try to do a little bit of everything in a short time,” she said. “This provides feedback as to if they want to make a full-year commitment to the program. We really stress volunteering and community.”
Princess camp page 7
During the princess camp, Lewandowski said she witnessed happy young girls who were enjoying activities such as making a royal treat, sash making, coloring, games, story time and a photo booth.
“The parents who stayed with their girls looked as if they were enjoying themselves as well,” Lewandowski
said. “After the event, we all felt it went over very well and look forward to next year.”
Stewart agreed and is excited for next year’s camp.
“We received positive feedback from parents and participants,” she said.
Two Brandons are better than one when it comes to Foley Fun Days 5K sponsorship innovation.
Brandon Voit and Brandon Tschida with Falcon National Bank are excited about a new race addition.
A Kid K starting at 5:45 p.m. has been added to the June 19 event for all children too young to complete in the regular race that starts at 6 p.m. in front of the Mille Lacs Vet Clinic on 310 Dewey St. in Foley.
Voit is market president and a business banker in the Foley branch. Tschida is a credit analyst.
The financial duo are active distance runners and are members of the 5K planning committee.
“This year, we wanted to see what we could do to get more involvement and more registrants,” Voit said.
Voit is participating in his third Foley Fun Days. His initial thoughts about adding a kids event began formulating after he visited or participated in a number of different 5K events with something similar.
“We went back and forth
(in committee) about whether or not to charge for it, and the only reason we’re asking $10 per participant is to cover the cost of the T-Shirts,” Voit said. “A small fee is common.”
Falcon National Bank employees get involved with the community, Voit said. He runs 5Ks and half marathons, and was naturally intrigued with helping after he started working in Foley 2.5 years ago.
“I was asked if I would chair the event, and I knew one thing I wanted to do right away was change it up a little bit,” Voit said. “We’ll have goodie bags for all the Kid K runners and a pair of sunglasses.”
Other bag items will include a coupon for a kids pizza and an ice cream cone from area businesses, snacks, candies and other goodies.
“The kids won’t be timed,” Voit said. “The route for their 10-minute race is less than a half mile, from the start line down to Norman Avenue North and back. It’s a nice, straight shot, so any parents who don’t want to go with their kids can easily see them and keep an eye on them without getting worried.”
When Tschida started
working at Falcon National Bank 6.5 years ago, he signed up for the 5K committee right away, he said.
“This year will be my seventh 5K,” Tschisa said. “When I was younger, I loved running and still do it to this day. I just love seeing everyone having a good time, especially the faster runners at the finish.”
Tschida ran when he was a Foley High School student. He said the running community is not similar to other sports. It is competitive but in a different way.
“You build friendships when you are running a race,” he said. “A lot of times you help each other out by pacing and just trying to get your best running time.”
Watching community members and customers run in the Foley Fun Days 5K is important, Tschida said.
“As a runner, it’s fantastic to hear people cheer you on,” he said. “For me, it provides a great boost. It’s great to have this event be part of the community.”
Race day registration begins at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 19. Participants needed to register by June 5 to be guaranteed a T-shirt.
The race course is a flat, fast loop on pavement that winds through the streets of Foley.
Race timing for the event will be provided by St. Cloudbased recreation management company Pickle Events.
Medals will be awarded for top male and female in
each category. The top three overall male and top three overall female participants will be recognized and awarded additional prizes. To register online, visit runsignup.com/Race/MN/ Foley/FoleyFunDays5K. Registration forms are also available at the bank.
