Leaving school as leaders Schumann, Piepgras to speak at Foley High School commencement BY EVAN MICHEALSON | STAFF WRITER

FOLEY – Tessa Schumann and Ellie Piepgras both know a great deal about leadership. As active as any senior high school students can be, the duo were both captains on the Foley High School swim and dive team, are senior class officers in the school’s student council and maintain an astounding academic reputation as members of the Foley chapter of the Minnesota Honor Society, of which Schumann is president. And now, they are wrapping up their long-winding high school journey as the two seniors speakers at Foley High School’s upcoming commencement ceremony June 5. “Tessa and I have been friends since the third grade and we instantly clicked,” Piepgras said. “We’ve grown up and have always had each other. It’s a great experience to know we’ve grown up together and have the opportunity to speak with each other.” The driven students were notified of this opportunity after a senior class officer meeting in April, when principal Shayne Kusler pulled them aside and asked if they would like to speak at commencement. They agreed without hesitation. “That’s just how we are,” Schumann said. “If we get asked something, we do it.” As if it were a class project, Schumann and Piepgras have been working in harmony to brainstorm

what each of their speeches would address. There is not shortage of inspiration for the high schoolers, who are among a senior class that has experienced a wider range of highs and lows than most graduating groups before them. “Obviously, COVID-19 is the main thing right now,” Schumann said. “It’s inspiring to see after so much time apart how everyone has come back together as a class. It’s like we’ve never had time apart. We’re stronger as a class now than we were before.” With Schumann and Piepgras leading student government as class president and vice president, respectively, Foley’s student leaders looked to their fellow seniors for insight as much as possible in finding a way to give their class the ending they deserve. Piepgras acknowledges that without stepping into a senior officer role, she would have never gained these perspectives. “A lot of what they (senior officers) do is go around and ask them what they think, and I bring that back the group and offer input with different areas,” Piepgras said. “I want to help everyone out the best way I can and make sure everyone can get the best deal out of something.” In the past, leading a student body would have had its challenges, but in a far more predictable fashion. With the district transitioning learning formats multiple

Both of the students’ speeches will delve into the importance of memories, as Foley High School’s seniors have enjoyed many positive moments throughout their schooling, from building friendships in elementary school to maintaining these blossoming relationships in high school. These pieces of the past play an important role in Schumann and Piepgras’s brainstorming. “It makes it more personal and it’s fun to write the speeches with someone you’ve shared so

many memories with, because you can reflect on the memories you’ve shared with each other and the class,” Schumann said. However, graduation is not just a time for reflection and the recollection of memories; it signals the beginning of something new. Schumann will double-major in biology and psychology at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, hoping to find a career in genetic counseling, while Piepgras will attend the University of Minnesota as a biochemistry major. So, as two accomplished yet respectful Foley High School students prepare to take the stage to address their friends and loved ones, it will be a moment of triumph, the completion of a critical component of their lives. “With any chapter coming to an end, there’s many people to say goodbye to and so many people that you’ll try and stay in touch with,” Piepgras said. “For the most part, it’s gratefulness and joy, and pride for myself and my class, that we made it this far. We made it.”

CONGRATULATIONS!
