And then there is Sauk Lake, one of the best bass lakes in Minnesota. Every year trophy-sized bass are caught on

At a Glance

• Big Sauk Lake is a dynamite lake for anglers. It is the Sauk Centre area’s largest lake, beginning in Sauk Centre and running 10 miles north. The Sauk River Dam is located just off Main Street north of downtown and serves as a popular fishing destination for anglers.

• Fairy Lake Chain – Located four-and-a-half miles northwest of Sauk Centre, this chain of lakes consists of Fairy Lake, Lily Lake and Long Lake. This chain serves as a popular spot for water sports, and includes the area’s nicest beach for swimming. The fishing is good on these lakes as well.

Sauk Lake, which is home to an everyother-year bass fishing tournament. But bass isn’t the only species this large body of water produces. The lake is also a good panfish lake with a good crappie and sunfish bite. The crappies are especially strong in the winter months, and Sauk Lake is a popular spot for anglers to plant their ice shacks. The walleye bite has also improved thanks to a stocking effort several years ago. And there are plenty of trophy northern swimming along the channels. It is not uncommon for an angler to pull a 15- to 20-pound fish out of the Sauk Lake waters. There are several resorts on Sauk Lake that are clean, affordable and friendly. So if you are planning a vacation where you’d like to have the best of recreation and angling, Sauk Centre is the place to be.

• Guernsey Lake Chain – Another hot spot for anglers, this chain is six miles north of Sauk Centre and consists of Guernsey Lake, Long Bridge Lake, Long Lake, Juergens Lake and McCormick Lake.

Plan Your Vacation in Sauk Centre! Not many small towns can offer such a variety of options for lake enthusiasts. If you are planning a vacation where you’d like to have the best of recreation and angling, Sauk Centre is the place to be.

Sinclair Lewis ABOUT

Sinclair Lewis’ Nobel Prize Works Main Street (1920) Babbitt (1922) A r r ow s m i t h ( 1 9 2 5 ) Elmer Gantry (1927) D o d swo r t h ( 1 9 2 9 )

Five Interesting Facts

By Neely Simpson, Writer 1.) Thirteen-year-old runaway: When he was 13, Sinclair Lewis ran away from home with hopes of joining the Spanish-American War as a drummer boy. His plans were foiled when his father caught him at the train station and made him come home. 2.) Plot Dealer: While a student at Yale, Lewis met Jack London who had come to lecture on socialism. Gifted at devising creative plots, Lewis sold 14 short story ideas to London in 1910 for the price of $70. One of those plots became London’s unfinished novel, “The Assassination Bureau, Ltd.”

Sinclair Lewis Writers’ Conference Now one of the longest-running writers’ conferences in the country, the Sinclair Lewis Writers’ Conference will again focus on inspiring and informing writers of all ages and experience levels. The conference is on Saturday Oct. 3, 2020 at the Sauk Centre High School Auditorium. This year’s keynote speaker is Don Shelby, who will help us celebrate the 30th anniversary of this notable conference! For conference details, go to sinclairlewiswritersconference.org. About the conference, Will Weaver said “I think the Sinclair Lewis Writers’ Conference in Sauk Centre is one of the best values going in the Midwest. It allows aspiring writers to plug in for a day with well-known authors and fellow book lovers. You’ll learn a lot, and it’s downright fun.” www.sinclairlewisfoundation.com

3.) Two-time Spouse of Successful Career Women: Sinclair Lewis was married twice and divorced twice. In 1914 he married Grace Livingston Hegger, an editor for “Vogue Magazine.” The two met in an elevator in the New York office building in which they both worked. At the time, Lewis was working for Stokes Publishing Company, which had its offices a few floors below the Vogue offices. The couple had one son together, Wells Lewis. However, they separated in 1925 and divorced in 1928. In May of 1928, Lewis married well-known journalist, Dorothy Thompson, who led the Berlin bureau of the New York Post. She was staunchly anti-Hitler and has the distinction of being the first American journalist expelled from Germany, an order given by Hitler himself. In 1939, she appeared on the cover of “Time” magazine, which named her one of the two most influential women in America, the other being Eleanor Roosevelt. Lewis and Thompson had one son together, Michael Lewis, but the two divorced in 1942. 4.) Father of a Decorated War Hero: Lewis’s son, Wells Lewis, who was named after H.G. Wells, was killed in action during World War II. After graduating from Harvard - where during his senior year he wrote a well-received novel titled, “They Still Say No” - Wells Lewis enlisted in the Army a year before the U.S. entered World War II. He served in active combat in Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy before coming under the command of Major General John Dahlquist in France, where he served as Dahlquist’s personal aide. During his military service, he achieved the rank of first lieutenant and earned both a silver star and a bronze star. On Oct. 29, 1944, just south of Paris, he was shot by a sniper and died instantly, collapsing into the arms of Major General Dahlquist. 5.) Declined the Pulitzer, Accepted the Nobel: In 1930 Sinclair Lewis was the first American to win a Nobel Prize for literature. The Prize was given to him for the five noteworthy novels he wrote during the 1920s, “Main Street,” “Babbitt,” “Arrowsmith,” “Elmer Gantry,” and “Dodsworth.” In 1926, Lewis’s novel, “Arrowsmith,” was awarded a Pulitzer Prize; however, he declined the Prize saying he didn’t approve of contests in which one author was deemed better than another. When asked why he was willing to accept the Nobel Prize, but not the Pulitzer, he said it was because the Nobel was much less commercial and was awarded based on the merit of a career rather than a single book. Despite his long and successful career as a great American novelist, Sinclair Lewis ended his life much like he started it: lonely. With failing health, he was surrounded mostly by secretaries he’d hired as companions. He died on Jan. 10, 1951 in Rome from complications of the alcoholism with which he’d struggled most of his life. His last novel, “World So Wide,” was published posthumously.

Eagle’s Healing Nest O

n a wing and a prayer, and by joining hands and hearts, Eagle’s Healing Nest was created in 2012 to serve veterans in need of home, hope and healing. With veteran suicides reaching staggering heights, veteran advocate Melony Butler saw an opportunity with the 124-acre campus located in Sauk Centre that once served as a home school for women and as a correctional facility. On her first day visiting the sprawling campus, an eagle flew high above her and landed in its nest on the property. For Butler, it was a sign that she had found a home for veterans to heal with honor. With the help of countless volunteers, Butler formed Eagle’s Healing Nest, which focuses on veteranto-veteran counseling, as well as professional services to help soldiers heal after returning from war.

Since its inception, the Nest has grown one branch at a time. Veterans at the Eagle’s Nest do the cooking, the cleaning, the landscaping with flower gardens and a vegetable garden, work in the wood shop and take care of the animals at the barn called “Legacy of Love.” That is where ducks and chickens, horses, calves and a friendly billy goat reside that help the veterans

find peace and a purpose. Most importantly, the veterans talk to each other, and share their experiences with those who have witnessed and lived the similar fates of war. Since the first veteran was housed at the Nest, many have soared to be reunited with their families and regain their footing in society. Recently the Nest was able

to purchase the property and put it into a trust for veterans to have as a place to heal forever. What started as a wing and a prayer has turned into a place of hope for the veterans all over the United States who have selflessly served their country to protect our freedoms.
