On March 15, he removed dirt from a local vehicle wash business.
“We do a lot of car washes. We have trucks that suck the dirt up,” he said.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency oversees much of the waste, recycling and disposal activities in Minnesota.
Domestic waste includes sewage pumped from a residence. Commercial waste is a non-industrial waste hauled from a business, including restaurant grease traps, waste trap wastewater, sand trap wastewater and commercial holding tank waste. All loads which do not meet the definition of domestic waste or commercial waste are considered industrial waste loads under the Septic Management Program that includes liquid waste from an industrial or manufacturing process, landfill leachate and groundwater and surface water unsuitable for discharge to receiving waters.
The MPCA regulates management and disposal of liquid and solid wastes held by floor drains, traps, holding tanks and associated plumbing.
Many businesses that store, fuel, repair or wash vehicles indoors have
floor drains to catch snow melt and wash water from the vehicles. Floor drains may also be used to collect releases from industrial and manufacturing equipment. The wastes held by floor drains and associated plumbing can present risks to human health and the environment if improperly managed.
Vehicle wash and storage wastewater that is not discharged into a sewage treatment, also known as a public owned treatment works, may be collected in a holding tank for later transport to a POTW or may be applied to the land.
According to the MPCA, you may manage non-hazardous sludge by dewatering it into your floor drain system and then disposing of the solids as an industrial solid waste, sending it off-site as a used oil-contaminated waste or applying it to land at your site or another site.
You may manage non-hazardous wastewater by discharging it through a sanitary sewer to a municipal sewage treatment plant, accumulating it in an on-site holding tank before transporting it via truck to a POTW that has agreed to accept the wastewater or applying it to land at your site or another site.
