To defeat Elrosa, opponents need to score runs, and few have done that. As the season

wound down, the Saints recorded five shutouts in seven games. Only two teams have scored more

than two runs on them this year.

Leading that shutout effort has been Ethan Vogt. The veteran hurler’s 0.55 ERA is among the best in central Minnesota. In his 48 2/3 innings, he has given up only six runs, three of them unearned. He is not the only Saints pitcher shutting out opponents. Payton VanBeck, between playing with St. Cloud State and the Rox, has not made all games. When available though, he has dominated games, striking out 49 in 32 innings. Will VanBeck and Wyatt Steffensen have also came through. They have learned they can trust their defense to make the plays needed to keep runners off base. Those efforts have been needed, as the Saints have not always scored a lot of runs. Only twice has it scored 10 or more in a game. That is not to say it does not have a solid offense. Kevin Kuefler, with a .441 on-base percentage, consistently reaches base, and once

Blaine Fischer’s catching has been instrumental to Elrosa’s success. Besides being the primary catcher for a solid pitching staff, he has developed into a good defensive catcher.

New Munich’s balance and versatility showed all year, as it took on Stearns County League teams and won its first seven contests, three by 10 or more runs.

Its .308 team batting average comes not from two or three high-average hitters, but a lineup of players who can get on during any at-bat. It showed that with its ninth-inning rally against Spring Hill, when it had eight of 10 batters reach base.

Logan Funk has had solid games this year and is hitting over .500 and Will Funk has held a .400-plus average most of the year. In addition, Brandon Holm, Caden Sand and Devin Hansen all hit at about .350 or higher. There are too many batters to keep New Munich off base. Even in a 1-0 loss to Elrosa, it had 13 hits.

The team has a variety of pitchers it can bring to the mound and keep opponents from outscoring its offense. Veteran Jim Thull has again baffled batters and Ty Reller can overpower them. Caden Sand and Holm have shown the younger pitchers will make contributions.

The SilverStreaks are in a position and have the talent for a good postseason run. They very well could be playing in September.

Greenwald’s season was one of general improvement. The team posted four wins on the year and did so playing close games.

A big part of the team’s wins this year has been a pitching of Brett Engelmeyer. Throughout the year, he has been among the top shutdown pitchers in the area, recording 54 strikeouts in 50 innings. Tyler Hoffman has had quality innings this year and Tyler Engelmeyer has thrown in relief.

Another element has been the defense, who has cut down on errors. When it plays well defensively, Greenwald is in the game.

Offensively, Greenwald has learned to play small ball and win. In a surprising 3-0 win over St. Martin, the Cubs had four hits and used three bunts to score its runs. Ironically, in two of its wins, it had home runs.

Spring Hill Chargers Hill Chargers

Will Spring Hill survive the tournaments needed to reach state?

They have the players to do so. In the collection of talent that is the Chargers, experience and promising youth take to the field every game. With the bats of Jamie Terres, Ben Welle, Devin Orbeck and Corey Schoenberg in the lineup ,the Chargers are hard to

keep off the bases. Once on base, they get around to score. The team is not adverse to bunting for bases, but it likes to run. Led by Owen Meyer’s five steals, the team averages over a steal a game. Once in position to score, it knows it can count on hits from Jamie and Nate Terres, Welle and Reagan Nelson to drive in runs.

The Chargers have produced one of the area’s top pitchers in Ben Welle. He is the workhorse of the Charger’s mound staff, throwing over 40 innings – and he has been effective. His 2.53 ERA is among the best in the area, and he averages a strikeout an inning. Veteran hurler Anthony Revermann still remains effective, as is the relief pitching of Austin Schoenberg and Jordan Welle.

The Chargers have earned wins against some good teams this year and may well win many more before the season ends.

Meire Grove Grovers Grove Grovers

When its bats connected, Meire Grove could play with the best. That showed with its wins over front-running Elrosa and New Munich, causing a late-season tangle for the top spot in the SCL North. The team has players who can hit. Jordan Klaphake and Josh Olmscheid, 15 and 14 hits, respectively, set the pace for the Grovers, and hitters, Alex Welle, Colton Meyer, Kurt Marthaler and Tyler Moscho were not far behind. The Grovers are the only SCL team to have scored 20 runs in a game this year.

What it did not always do was bunch it hits, resulting in stranding runners and missed scoring chances. Still, the Grovers managed to push across runs.

The Grover pitching staff is among the most experienced in the league and still ef-

fective. Matt Imdieke threw most of the team’s innings, and Josh Olmscheid, Josh Roelike and Joe Schwinghamer all made regular appearances. They all had some good outings this year, keeping Meire Grovers

Amateur Baseball: Stearns County League - South

St. Martin Martins St.

St. Martin is bringing a young but experienced crew to the postseason.

It has in recent years, advanced to state with minimal hitting, clean defense and outstanding pitching.

The pitching and defense is still there, but the team is now hitting better.

Kyle Lieser, Bryan Schlangen and Scott Lieser have earned reputations

for their hitting. This year, Noan Rueter and Brady Goebel have started hitting more often and putting runs across the plate. That said, the Martins are among the most effective teams in the area for using small ball techniques. It has 27 steals, led by Bryan Schlangen’s six thefts.

Nolan Rueter has emerged as a hitter who comes through with runners on base. He is second on the team in RBIs and has punched out more than one extra-base hit.

Richmond Royals Richmond Royals

It has been a disappointing season for Richmond, as it never really found consistency.

That is not to say the team was ever underestimated as it played in the Stearns County League.

Kyle Budde and Cole Schmitz are both established hitters and continued to deliver. Schmitz has a deserved reputation for extra-base hitting.

Budde has a knack for getting around the bases and scored 11 runs this year. Add into that mix the 14-hit,11-RBI hitting of Justin Schroeder and the baserunning of Dalton Thelen, who has seven steals, and you have a team that can score runs.

Richmond has generally done so. It has also allowed others to score, as it struggled to find consistency.

Luke Jokela has had a respectable season and is among the area leaders in strikeouts. DJ Schleicher has a 3.13 ERA. Both of them can keep Richmond in games.

for a good postseason run.

St. Martin from page 6

The defense has remained reliable, with one of the better infields in the area. Few ever want to challenge the arm of its outfielders.

At the heart of the Martins’ success remains the pitching. Scott Lieser, Ben Schroeder and Bryan Schlangen have all shut down, and occasionally shut out, opponents. All three have ERAs under 2.00. Scott Lieser’s 58 strikeouts is among the best in the area. This year, that trio has been joined by Carter Thelen’s 17.1 innings. He struck out 31 batters while picking up

two wins and a save. The Martins have not only picked up where they left off last year; they have improved and are poised for another good postseason run.

Kyle Budde has kept hitting all season long. His 18 hits ties him for the Richmond Royals’ lead in hits and has led to 11 runs, the best on the team.

Stearns County League - South Roscoe Rangers Roscoe

Roscoe qualified for the playoffs for the first time in a number of years as it balanced team hitting and good defense.

Almost everyone helped in producing needed hits for the team this year. Brandon and Jordan Schleper stepped to the forefront hitting consistently and Max Athmann had a knack for the dramatic hit.

Brayden and Chris Vanderbeek and Russell Leyendecker all delivered key hits at some point during the year. Those hits were factors in winning enough games to qualify for the playoffs, and for keeping the Rangers close in a few of the losses.

The pitching has come through a collection of arms. No one pitcher has logged a lot of innings, but

Good Luck

Leyendecker, Bryce Vanderbeek and Parker Brezinka have gradually emerged as the go-to pitchers. Brezinka has won three games as the Rangers rallied for wins.

The postseason is the time when memories are made, and Roscoe may make a few before its season ends.

Avon Lakers Avon

Avon is among the favorites of the Victory League and Region 8C teams to reach the state tournament. In posting a 13-4-1 record in its first 18 games, the team has had consistent pitching, a well-balanced offensive attack and a steady defense. The latter has been very effective, turning 10 double plays. Up the middle, Ryan Janzen and Caleb Curry are among the better keystone guardians in the area.

In Elian Mezquita, it has a fast, solid centerfielder.

That trio leads an offense capable of scoring runs in a hurry. The team does so with some power.

It has nine home runs and effective baserunning. Reese Gregory, .429; Janzen, .370; Curry, .395; and Mezquita, .296, are often on base ahead of the run-producing bats of Carter Phillipi, Joe Dolan and Carter Holthaus. A sign of its scoring potential is that it has only been shutout once this year.

A shutout by the Lakers pitching staff is always a probability. It has

five shutouts this year and two one-run games. Matt Pichelmann led the team in innings pitched, but it has a lot of arms in its lineup, and they are effective. Four pitchers have at least 20 strikeouts and six different pitchers have earned wins.

The quality of the Lakers hitting, fielding and pitching have been on display in almost every game. It has challenged

and played with some of the best in the VL, Region 8C and central Minnesota. This year, Avon hosts the first weekend of Region 8C, and may very well be playing in the second weekend and beyond.

St. Stephen Steves St. Steves

The Opole Bears are having one of their best seasons in recent memory.

They have done so blending and balancing various talents of the team. Offensively, led by Alex Lange’s 17 hits, the team is not one dimensional. Eight others have at least 10 hits, with Tate Lange, three doubles and two home runs; and Jordan Schmitz, three doubles, showing power. Small ball has produced good

results as well. The team keeps

its composure in close games, relying on a steady defense to snag deep fly balls and correctly field grounders. The team has turned nine double plays. If anyone player has become the face of Opole this year, it is Tate Lange. He has led the team from mound, with a 3.89 ERA and from the plate, he is the team leader in runs and RBIs.

The Bears’ win-loss record has not placed them among the elite of the VL or Region 8C teams this year, but its eight wins and the number of close games it has played shows there is a good chance Opole could pull of an upset or two in the postseason, and have a successful run in that part of the season.

This could be St. Stephen’s year.

The Steves have the components needed for a postseason run. Offensively, there are few bigger threat for quick runs than Mat Meyer and Cole Fuecker.

Meyer’s 25 hits includes eight doubles and three home runs, as he has scored and driven in 15 runs. Teams cannot pitch around him. Fuecker’s 14 hits includes seven extra-base hits, four of them home runs. He has driven in 12 runs and scored 13 of his own. Blake Guggenberger has 15 hits with 10 RBIs and Jack Greenlun and Brandon Waldvogel have 12 hits each.

With that hitting, the Steves score runs in bunches. Four times this year it has scored in double digits.

St. Stephen page 15

Opole’s Luke Bieniek has established himself as quality outfielder capable of getting to any ball hit to his part of the field. Offensively, he has found ways to get on and get around the bases.

on is a threat to take extra bases. Derek Wiener and Jackson Peter are good at hitting with men on. Both have double-digit RBI totals and both have hit for extra bases. Blaine Fischer’s baserunning has produced 13 runs. He is also the catcher for most games.

Elrosa has had to work for its wins and goes into each game knowing it can defeat the other team. That confidence should only help in the postseason.

The Black Sox are a formidable collection of players and are capable of playing with most of their opponents.

A pleasant addition to the them has been the arm of Iver Papke to the pitching corps. Pitching against some of the better hitting teams in the Victory League, he has allowed only nine runs and has a 1.35 ERA. Andrew Kerzman is dependable, logging over 40 innings, and Mitch Reller’s return to the team has provided another 20-plus inning pitcher. They have been on the mound and rarely given up big innings.

Freeport’s offense has produced players few teams take lightly. Matt Johnson hits over .350 and is a dependable geton-base batter, As are Jake Braegelmann, Bryan Benson and Cody Rose. When the bats of Brandon and Carter Sawyer and Nate Mettenburg connect, the

Black Sox put runs across the plate.

Freeport comes into the playoffs knowing it has played well against some of the best the Victory League has to offer. With the players in its lineup, the team could have a nice postseason.

St. Wendel Saints St. Wendel

Do not be surprised if St. Wendel upsets someone in the postseason. The Saints have matured over the past few years and have the players to stay with teams it plays against.

Noticeable this year has been the offensive power the team posses. Admittedly, St. Wendel does have a short-left field fence, but even with that, the six home runs by Austin Dickmann is a feat. The team has 17 home runs total and 26 doubles.

Austin and Brandon Dickmann, who has four home runs, both have over 20 hits. Logan Harren has dropped in 18 more and Tanner Reis is establishing himself as one of better young play-

Farming spent much of the season on the short end of frustrating games.

The batting of Aaron Eiynck, Adam Winkels, Tylor Schroeder and Will Mergen consistently put the Flames in position to win games. Mergen is an exciting runner on the basepath and Schroeder and Adam Winkels can deliver the big hit.

Few teams scored many runs on the Flames, though usually scored just enough to snatch a win. At one point this year, the Flames had four consecutive one-run losses, and in most of those games, it outhit their opponents.

The Flames had a dependable pitching staff led by Adam Nibaur. While he gave up runs, many of them were unearned. He struck out 41 and walked just 14, meaning teams had to put the ball in play to get on against him. Schroeder and Adam Winkels threw over 20 innings, often in relief.

Where the Flames were hurt were errors. Almost all the runs allowed were unearned and

were usually just enough to see victories slip away.

Despite its struggles, the Flames were in most games and in the playoff hunt to the very end.

There is nothing fancy about Lake Henry baseball.

The team just does what it needs to win. Whether it is getting the timely hit, striking out a top hitter with the game on the line or hustling to get an infield hit, the Lakers have done it.

Along the way, Lake Henry has established itself as one of the teams to beat in the SCL. Most think of home runs when considering the Lakers offense, and the short outfields at Lake Henry do invite teams to swing for the fences. However, those home runs come only because those batters hit.

Shane Kampsen, Carter Wessel and Nick Dingman have homered, but they also have 10 or more hits. Grant Ludwig, who led the team with three home runs, had nine hits. Jason Kampsen has reached base 11 times with hits, then proceeded to steal second. Lake Henry gets its runners on and get them in.

Nor is there anything fancy about the pitching staff. The pitchers, whether getting batters to hit pop-ups, grounders or striking out, just get batters out and keep them off the bases. Tori Olmscheid, Ludwig and Trent Wendlandt have

ers with 16 hits.

Hits alone are not producing runs for the team. The Saints are manufacturing runs with its 21 steals and 16 sacrifices. Its pitching, while not as consistent as the offense, has had good moments and it has a staff that can provide a lot of innings.

Austin Dickmann is the primary pitcher, chalking up 41 innings, but Peter Schumer is no slouch with 30.2 innings, and three others have 20 innings. The postseason will challenge the Saints, but it should be up to that

“Jackson

It has never been shut out. Working to keep the Steves in the lead is a proven pitching staff led by Greenlun. He struck out 55 while pitching 37 1/3 innings. Equally impressive is Derek Durant’s 25 strikeouts in 21 innings. The pitching of Jake Schelonka and Landon Lunser have been other reasons few teams score a lot of runs on the Steves. That pitching and defense combines into a team that can go deep in the postseason.

Playing basic, fundamental ball may not produce highlight plays –but it does produce wins. With the Lakers hosting this year’s Region 15C tournament, postseason home diamond wins are very possible.

Swanville has players who can get on base. That is shown as Hudson Pung, Travis Barthel and Levi Beseman have consistently reached base with hits or walks. There has not always been support for follow-up RBI hits.

The team played in some close games this year. When its offense clicked, it did score runs, scoring 13 in a game this year. Beseman and Cooper Thieschafer are often on the mound for the team and have turned in good efforts.

The Swans can use those efforts to build for future success.

It has been a year of learning for Randall as it competes in the Victory League.

The team has played some exciting games, but were overpowered in others. Still, few team take the Cubs lightly –nor should they. Randall can and does come to play.

Kyle Peterschick is the player many think of when preparing for Randall. His consistent play in the field and at the plate, .342 average, has kept Randall in games. Nathan Benning, 13 hits with three doubles, should not be overlooked. And Matt Otremba, while not making every game, has a .500 average with 10

hits.

Travis Wenzel is another player who helps in multiple ways. He has 14 hits and is the team’s go-to pitcher. He has thrown 53.1 innings, earning two wins.

Benning has responded well when asked to pitch. He has earned two wins.

The Cubs enter the postseason knowing it has the players and tal-

Flensburg struggled to find runs in every game this year. It does, though, have players like Reece Hubbard, Juan Melanciano, Gerard Kokett and Carlos Melanciano who can get on base. It has struggled to get them in for runs.

The Falcons did have nine runs against the pitching staffs of St. Stephen and Fort Ripley and played hard in a 3-2 to Avon. Despite its struggles, the Falcons were scored a win in the single-elimination playoffs, and may win a few more games.

The Sobieski Skis will have a tougher route than other Victory League teams to the state tournament. It plays in Section 2B against some well-known Class B teams. The Cold Spring Springers, Hamel Hawks, Moorhead Brewers and Mudhens and Twin Port Timbers are all solid programs. Four of them qualify for the state tournament. The Skis could be among those four.

Its offense has proven hitters in Riley Hirsch, .481; Collin Eckman, .333; Joey Hanowski, .371; and a .312 team average. Those hits produce runs, with Eckman and Dusty Parker scoring 15 or more runs. Those hits have power, as the Skis

connected for 21 doubles and 15 home runs. Eckman has four of them.

The Skis pitching staff has limited VL opponents’ runs. No team has scored 10 on the Skis, as it has collected 2.58 era. Dusty Parker’s 1.22 ERA is among the area’s best. He leads the staff with 35 strikeouts.

Playing in Class B puts the Skis against some of the best teams in the state. Sobieski could very

well prove it should be considered in that group.

The Pierz Lakershave played some solid games this year. Avon and Fort Ripley barely edged them, and they defeated Buckman and Foley.

Hitters Brady Petron, with 11 hits; Kolten Happke, five RBIs, and Paul Herman, .360 batting verage, have reputations for getting on base. Carter Petron and Luke Girtz have delivered hits with runners in scoring position. The team still has the experience of Preston Rocheleau and Reggie Litke in its lineup.

On the mound, Noah Cekalla, with 35 strikeouts in 29.1 innings, is respected as a pitcher. Those talents should only help the team in the postseason.

Buckman Billygoats Buckman Billygoats

Last year, the Billygoats reached the state championship game before their season ended.

They would like to make that same run this year, and have the players to do so. The offense has seven players with at least 10 hits and two of them, Jack Suska and Noah Boser, have at least 20 hits. Their hitters, are consistent, and with 14 home runs and 24 doubles, have the power for big innings.

The Billygoats have the knack of hitting with runners on base. Andrew Rueckert led the team with 18 RBIs. Benjamin Thoma, Suska and Boser have all reached double digits in RBIs.

Holding opponents in check are pitchers Matt Tautges and Todd Robinson. They have the ability to have batters hit into a solid defense or strike out batters.

With its offensive and pitching talent and depth, Buckman could reach the Class C championship

again this year.

The Brewers have made a season of being a pesky team that will not go away. Throughout the year, it has kept pressure on teams and worked its way into scoring chances.

Creating those opportunities are the bats of Gunnar Wicklund, Cody Kimman, Michael Leidenfrost and Rylee Rausch. They not only have more than 10 hits each, but have scored more than 10 runs each. Many times, they are on base when Ryan Stuckmeyer, 10 hits, comes to the plate and delivers a hit. Stuckmeyer had 10 RBIs this year.

The team has four home runs, but really counts on speed to get around the bases. Rauch has four triples and Wicklund six doubles. Collectively, the team has 17

steals, seven by Leidenfrost alone.

Small ball and hustle creates runs, but does not always give pitchers a lot of breathing room. Peter Schommer, Cody Kimman, Wicklund and other taking to the mound have held opponents in check, for the most part. All three have ERAs under 3.00 and Schommer has 35 strikeouts. The team developed a knack for twin killings, turning 12 double plays.

The Brewers played to a .500 season in the VL this year, but it may do

much better in the postseason. Its hitting and pitching make it fun to watch.

Pierz Bulldogs Pierz Bulldogs

It has been a rough season for Bulldogs, as they usually found themselves on the wrong side of a lopsided game.

The team had some bright spots. Among them was the .400-plus hitting of Charles Boser and the pitching of Charles Becker, who had 33 strikeouts in 31 innings. Besides Boser, two others, Aiden Micholski and Craig Luberts, had over .300 averages.

The season did show some promise for the future, as some young play-

ers got a taste of amateur play.

Jack Suska’s powerful swing has produced five home runs for Buckman this year. He hit often in games, batting over .400 during the regular season.

Royalton Riverdogs Royalton Riverdogs

Royalton is not a team to be overlooked, in spite of its record.

Its pitching staff, led by Zach Leibold, has turned in some good performances, resulting in winning close games and near-misses in few others. Leibold had emerged as a durable pitcher, logging over 60 innings through the team’s first 12 games. He displays control, allowing 10 walks while striking out 48 batters. Nathan Psyck is a proven pitcher and can be relied on for solid innings.

The Riverdogs have struggled to find consistency in its offense. Brady Brezinka, Joe Gaida, Tyler Jendro and Zack Cekalla all have hit well. They are often on base, but the

Riverdogs have not always cashed in on those opportunities. Defensively, the team has at times hurt itself but still turned seven double plays, with shortstop Grayson Suska involved in three of them.

Royalton has come to each game knowing it would have to play well to win. That it has done so in most games shows it may be a factor in the postseason.

Pitcher Zach Leibold has proven he can go deep into Royalton’s games and keep control of his pitches. He walked 10 while pitching over 60 innings.

As the defending Class C state champion, Nisswa comes to every game knowing it is the team to beat. It has played with that knowledge all year and has shown it is capable of handling the pressure.

Available numbers show the Lightning have a formidable lineup, with four players hitting .375 or better. Some of them, such as Chris Pederson and Jeremiah Piepkorn, are known not only for their consistency, but their power. Home runs are a trademark of the team and eight Lightning hitters have slugging percentages of .500 or better.

Those hits lead to runs and lopsided scores. The Lightning have plated 122 runs this year. In seven of its games, it scored 10 or more runs and once topped 20 runs.

Lightning pitchers go to the mound knowing they can protect leads given to them, and they generally have done so. Teams find it hard to score on Nisswa. Only one team has scored 10 on them, and most have tallied less than five runs. Nisswa outscored opponents 122-38 during the season.

Last year, Nisswa played in some close games as it advanced through playoffs, regions and the state tournament. It has the players to do so again this year.

Holm’s baserunning has put him into position to score runs for the Titans this year. Additionally, he provides a good stick in the lineup and solid play defensively.

Sauk Centre’s hitting and pitching has made it the team to beat in the Resorters League.

The team has a number of players who have dominated games. Derek Holm and Dylan Haskamp are the 1-2 punch for getting on base.

Dylan Haskamp not only has 11 hits, but is patient enough to have collected 13 walks. Holm, with 15 hits, is the team leader in RBIs and runs scored.

Batting behind those two are Andrew Rousslange, Douglas Zimmel, Jake Haskamp and Brian Beuning. All put the ball in play and runs on the board.

The pitching is another element that favors Sauk Centre for a good postseason run.

Both Dylan Haskamp and Shane Trattles have ERAs below 3.00, as does Shawn Hayungs. The team gets batters to hit into the Titans defense, or strikes out opponents. Collectively, the Titans have struck out 114 batters. Those efforts keep opponents’ runs low. The team has recorded one shutout,

six one-run games and one two-run game. The postseason, it is said, rewards the hottest team. Sauk Centre has all the elements needed to be one of those teams.

St. Mathias has had an up-and-down year against Victory League opponents. It can look to games where it simply hammered the ball, scoring double-digit runs, and find others where it gave up just as many.

The team has the potential to score a lot of runs, as Hunter and Konner Wicklund both hit in the high .300s and had over 10 hits. Jacob and Luke Zontelli are two that have hit well. All four have hit for extra bases and drive in runs. The team does not wait for the big hit, creating scoring opportunities with its 27 steals, eight from Hunter Wicklund.

The team, though, has given up runs. Conner Knettel has done the bulk of the pitching and Braydon Borg has contributed 26.1 innings. Both have, at times, struggled.

The Devils started the season with a 4-0 shutout win over Upsala, surprising some fans of VL play. It may surprise a few others before its season ends.

Fort Ripley Rebels Fort Rebels

If the regular season is any indication, Fort Ripley will not be a push over in the postseason. Its offensive lineup has players capable of getting on base and getting home. No one player has eye-popping statistics, but they find ways to put runs across the plate.

Seth Vagts has emerged as an igniting spark of sorts, getting on with walks and hits and getting around as Alex Haapajoki, Bill Sather and Riley DeRosier follow with hits. Veterans Brett Kramer and Brian Skluzacek are other good bats to have in the lineup.

Bryce Flanagan has done most of the pitching for the Rebels, winning

four games with a 2.95 ERA. Max Boran has earned respect, allowing five hits and one walk in 19 innings and Brett Kramer and Adam Jensen can still get opponents out.

Aitkin Steam Steam

Aitkin has been involved in some tight contests this year. Throughout the season, the pitching of Nathan Ehnstrom has been effective and given the Steam a chance to win games. Jon Blanchette and Ehnstrom both hit well, giving the Steam chances for runs. While it has struggled for wins, the Steam’s skill showed in wins over St. Mathias and Randall. In losses to Buckman and Royalton, it played well for a full game. The Steam’s postseason road will not be an easy one, but it has the players to make it memorable.

games.

Foley Lumberjacks Foley

Any team hoping to advance through Region 8C has to consider the Foley Lumberjacks – and has to defeat them.

The latter is not an easy accomplishment. The Lumberjacks have shown all season they can hit and score runs. Drew Beier’s .489 average is just one of the four .400plus averages on the team. With additional consistency from the bats of Mitch Keeler and Mitch Loegering joining Beier, the Lumberjacks are hard to keep off the bases. The bats of Dan Marod, Noah Winkelman and Beier provide the power to put them across.

Regional playoffs determine state entries

Area teams will be involved in one of four regional or section tournaments this year.

Teams from the Victory League-North/East and Victory League-South/West will compete in the eight-team double elimination Region 8C tournament to see which four teams qualify for state. Each division sends four teams to the regional tournament. The regular season champion qualifies for the region, as do three others determined through a playoff system. The playoffs determine the ranking of the teams from the division.

In the Resorters League, Sauk Centre has emerged as a frontrunner in the league. Others have shown they can be competitive. Members of the league are: Alexandria, Ashby, Carlos, Kensington, Sauk Centre and Urbank.

Alexandria has a reputation of good play. It showed in its 16-7 win over Kensington it can still produce runs.

Ashby has had solid hitting at times, once scoring 12 runs, and other times winning nail-biters. It has turned in some quality pitching even in losses.

Carlos can boast of two wins over Sauk Centre, one a shutout. JD Hennen, with two three-hitters against Sauk Centre, has been an effective pitcher. It has blown out some teams and held on in a few close games.

Kensington has struggled at times, but has kept games close.

Urbank’s offense has put up some impressive numbers, such as its 13-0 win over Ashby. Its pitchers show they can limit batters, like they did in a 3-2 win over Royalton.

The Resorters’ League plays in the Region 16C tournament against the Countryside League (Breckenridge, Dent, Fergus Falls and Pelican Rapids). Two of the teams from that region qualify for state. Region 16C begins play July 29 and runs for three weekends. The first two weekends will be in Breckenridge and the final weekend will be in Pelican Rapids

No additional information was available on the teams.

Whichever pitcher comes to the mound, they know they are supported by a solid defense capable of getting to the balls and making needed plays. The Lumberjacks keep misplays to a minimum and allow less than three runs a game on average.

The Victory League playoffs and Region 8C tournament are known for their quality of play. Foley should do little to hurt that image.

Playoffs in both the SCL North and SCL South determine three regional-qualifying teams from each division. The Central Valley League South playoffs determine the three from that division. The lower-ranked team of the SCL North and SCL South third-place playoff teams faces the third-place CVL South team in a one-game playoff July 29 in Lake Henry.
