Valedictorian victory

Fuchs named top of his class BY ANNA HINKEMEYER STAFF WRITER

SAUK RAPIDS – Gavin Fuchs has held himself to high standards throughout his schooling career. Once he entered high school, he picked up an even greater care for his grades and continued to challenge himself in whatever way he could. After he took his first advanced placement class sophomore year, Fuchs continued to challenge himself, never taking the easy route with school and which classes he chose. Today, that has pushed him to a high school experience he has not regretted and a class ranking he is honored and excited to have. Fuchs, son of Kristen and Jon Fuchs, has been named the Sauk Rapids-Rice High School Class of 2020 valedictorian. He is ending his high school career with a GPA of 4.369. “I want to have the greatest variety of options for college,” Fuchs said. “By getting straight A’s, I won’t have to worry about not getting into colleges. I have put in a lot of time and challenged myself with higher-level classes, often at the sacrifice of sleep and my social life, but the hard work has paid off. I’m honored to be valedictorian and excited to represent my class in

that way.” Throughout high school, Fuchs has appreciated the extracurricular opportunities available to him and his classmates. As a freshman, he was a member of the cross-country and track and field teams as well as student council and DECA. Fuchs joined one new activity each year. Sophomore year he joined math league, junior year was Minnesota Honor Society and senior year was the Green Team. DECA is the activity Fuchs is most accomplished in. During his junior year, he was a district representative and took seventh at the national competition in Orlando, Florida. This year, he served as co-president of the SRRHS chapter and qualified for nationals again, but the competition was canceled. “I started freshman year with some business classes and knew I wanted to keep getting involved,” Fuchs said. “I took a big risk and it has been a great experience.” Fuchs said Josh Bauer, business and marketing teacher, had the greatest influence on his education because of Bauer’s passion for what he teaches and the amount of skills Fuchs has gained from the classes. He also ranks Ray Nelson and Brenda Foy highly in influencing his

Gavin Fuchs

education. This fall, Fuchs will continue his education at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, where he will pursue a major in neuroscience with a double minor in Spanish and pharmacology. Beyond that, he plans to attend medical school with the end goal of becoming a surgeon. “Seeing the way our healthcare system has reacted to the COVID-19 pandemic has only solidified my wanting to become a doctor,” Fuchs said. “It’s amazing to see people helping and doing what they can as a driving force for our country.” When Fuchs looks back on

Congrats, graduates!

his high school career, he said he has enjoyed the opportunities and activities he has been a part of as well as the friendships he has developed. However, if there is one regret Fuchs has, it is that his time at Sauk Rapids-Rice wraps up amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “It shouldn’t end this way,” Fuchs said. “I am sad for my class as a whole. I am sad for the traditions we have missed out on, and that we may never get to gather as a big group anymore, especially if we don’t have a commencement ceremony. But I am thankful for everything I have had the opportunity to do. I have really enjoyed high school and how it has shaped me as a person.”

From sleepless nights to salutatorian

Burgardt to represent 2020 graduating class BY EVAN MICHEALSON STAFF WRITER

SAUK RAPIDS – Ryan Burgardt used to be an extremely shy high schooler. And then, he found a variety of music clubs at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School. First, there was wind ensemble. Then came marching band, jazz band, pep band and even orchestra. This spark of connectivity was just one step in Burgardt’s high school growth, eventually culminating in the senior being named the salutatorian of Sauk Rapids-Rice’s 2020 graduating class, which consists of 314 students. “I’m honored to represent a class of 300,” Burgardt said. “I’m just happy that I can rep-

resent a multitude of groups at high school that sometimes don’t always get represented, like band or winter guard, or people with similar family situations to mine.” Burgardt excelled in an academic setting, thriving no matter the class, earning a cumulative GPA of 4.301. It took more than attending classes for the salutatorian to reach that height; he made succeeding in the classroom a point of emphasis. “I think through high school, I was competitive, grade-wise,” Burgardt said. “Even in the hard points of my high school career, academics was a high priority on my list. I take high value in that.” Taking such an attentive approach to academics meant Burgardt maneuvered through a busy schedule to find time to properly study and complete homework. In the early hours of the morning, Burgardt arose to finish his schoolwork.

Congratulations

Class of 2020!

Ryan Burgardt

“I tend to do homework in the morning,” he said. “Another side of my academics, especially my junior year, was I would have a lot of sleepless nights because I was so busy. I would get up at 3 a.m. to get up to do homework.” Once the prolific student was finished with his studies, he needed to begin the school day. He arrived at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School at 7 to complete morning activities. After the school commenced and concluded, Burgardt almost always stayed afterward for more activities. Burgardt, along with his musical proficiency, participated in student council, the National Honor Society, Link Crew and winter guard. “I enjoy having friend groups in all different areas of the school,” Burgardt said. “The activities were a way to bridge those friendships.” The dedicated student returned home, slept and repeated the same active cycle again the next day. Certainly, having a jampacked schedule can be stressful, but Burgardt mostly thrived off the involvement of an activity or job. “I would sometimes find it stressful, but for the most part, I like making myself busy,” he said. “Now, with being home all day, it’s the complete opposite. I’m kind of going crazy not

Page 12 • 2020 Senior Keepsake | www.saukrapidsherald.com

being busy.” With the vital influence of his support system, such as teachers and his mother, Burgardt is positioned to speak on behalf of his graduating class. However, with school closed for the rest of the academic year, the proposition of an in-person commencement ceremony is unlikely. The soonto-be graduate feels a tang of sadness at that prospect. “I would like to have a formal graduation, an abridged one, just to see the people in my grade for the last time,” Burgardt said. “I didn’t know I wouldn’t be seeing people for the rest of my life. It would be some sort of closure to the situation. Ultimately, it’s whatever is best for everyone’s health.” At the end of it all, whether Burgardt delivers his speech remotely or in-person, he is grateful for the journey leading up to that point, a developmental period that saw his confidence skyrocket and his identity unravel. “I’ve actually really enjoyed high school,” he said. “I’ve figured out lot about myself and who I want to be. Just meeting people from other parts of the schools or other schools in general, I’ve grown more. I became more confident in my words, and I’m really thankful for that.”
