What does it take to become valedictorian and salutatorian of a class of 312 Sauk Rapids-Rice High School students? According to William Nielsen and Heidi Danielson, more than anything, diligence. Nielsen is graduating as the SRRHS Class of 2022 valedictorian and boasts a 4.422 GPA. Danielson is second in line with a 4.413 GPA as the class salutatorian. The two are preparing to deliver their commencement speeches as well as for their next chapter in life. “I was shocked,” Danielson said of when she was told of her accomplishment. “I wasn’t expecting it.”
Page 6 • 2022 Senior Keepsake | www.saukrapidsherald.com
Although the school allows students to track their GPA and class rank each trimester, Nielsen was gratified to see he maintained his high placement. “It was really cool to see that I finally made it there,” he said. Being chosen as the top two students in their graduating class was a sweet reward for the students who took advanced placement classes to earn potential college credits and boost their GPAs above the traditional 4.0. But on top of academics both students were heavily involved in extracurricular activities.
Rising page 7
Rising from page 6 Nielsen, the son of Brent and Elisa, was chosen as the Storm’s male recipient of the Minnesota State High School League Triple A award this year for his well-rounded career in arts, athletics and academics. He participates in concert choir, DECA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes. golf, math league, Link Crew, Minnesota Honor Society, student council, swimming and diving, track and field, and Storm Leaders. The daughter of Paul and Kris, Danielson has stood out in the fine arts realm of SRRHS while being involved in band, choir, Green Team, Link Crew, Minnesota Honor Society, speech, Students Against Destructive Decisions and theater. “My activities helped me with my academics,” Nielsen said. “When you’re thinking of things like DECA, math league – those more academic activities that I am doing – participating in those helped me to learn and grow outside of class and that, in turn, helped me with my course work.” While involved in sports, Nielsen said he excelled in the classroom because he knew he had to manage his
time more efficiently. “I was always on a time crunch with swimming, so it really helped me to focus,” he said. Danielson agreed with Nielsen’s observation. “I noticed with a lot of my fine arts activities, they would give me new perspectives that would help me out in school,” she said. Both Danielson and Nielsen learned things about themselves throughout the four years of high school that have helped them succeed at SRRHS and likely will help them going forward. For both students, understanding their strengths and weaknesses became more apparent during their sophomore year. “I’ve always been a huge perfectionist, and a lot of times that’s been a roadblock for me,” Danielson said. “But, I found out that I did my best work when I pushed that aside, got the work done and then revised later.” Nielsen said when the coronavirus pandemic blanketed the United States in spring 2020 and students were propelled into remote learning, he quickly had to adapt and take charge. “COVID-19 hits and our academics are all online,” Nielsen said. “It’s up to us whether we want to stay up on class. It’s up to us whether we want to actually do the work that’s
“It’s very difficult for me to relax when I know I have something looming over my head, so I always try to accomplish the most I can before I take a break. But I do think mental breaks are very important because you can go back into your work the next time and be extra diligent and extra motivated because you have had that time to unwind.” - William Nielsen assigned to us or just sort of let it skim by.” Partly due to shutdowns and limited activities and partly due to his diligence, Nielsen said he overstudied during remote learning. The act of spending hours each day studying for one class or subject allowed him, in hind sight, to make a useful critique of his abilities. “By overstudying, I was able to gauge my own limits of what I needed to do to properly prepare for tests and different academic coursework,” he said. “So now and in the future, I can gauge where I am at in any given class. … Doing that helped me now to gauge here’s what’s too much, here’s what’s too little, and here’s my happy medium and this is where I perform my best.” Although diligence to their education is important, the students also understand taking time for themselves is a must. “My whole high
school experience I have really had to work on finding that balance,” Danielson said. … “I had to purposely try to make sure I was taking a back step and not being too focused on academics and activities so much so that it didn’t overwhelm myself.” Both students mentioned listening to music as an outlet as well as the occasional video game and spending time with friends and family. “My philosophy has always been work now, play later,” Nielsen said. Nielsen found it beneficial to get as much as he could accomplished ahead of recreational time so he could truly relax while he was taking a break. “It’s very difficult for me to relax when I know I have something looming over my head, so I always try to accomplish the most I can before I take a break,” Nielsen said. “But I do think mental breaks are very important because
you can go back into your work the next time and be extra diligent and extra motivated because you have had that time to unwind.” As Danielson and Nielsen throw their caps in the air with the rest of their class May 31, they are ready to begin their journeys in new spaces where they undoubtedly will have room for more growth. Danielson will further her studies at Augustana University while focusing on the field of social work, and Nielsen will attend the Carlson School of Management on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis to pursue a business degree. “I don’t know if I have a very strict plan for college, and that’s kind of my plan – to be a little bit more flexible,” Danielson said. “I’m hoping that in college I get to learn about myself in a nonstructured way and just see where it takes me.”
