What makes your mom the best mom?
Sauk Rapids Herald staff visited the parks and streets of Sauk Rapids May 9 to hear community members’ responses about the person they call Mom.
Brevon Lesner
Mother: Kirsten Wienzierl
“The fact that she gave birth to me is pretty cool. Holding me for nine months in her womb and actually taking care of me, even with all the stuff I have done. Kids are terrible, and the fact she dealt with that is fantastic. She is very caring and supportive even to this day. I would say that makes her one of the best moms.”

Storm softball sweeps Alex, celebrates seniors
SRR already has 6-win season
BY MORGAN EGGERT | STAFF WRITERThe Sauk Rapids-Rice softball team has been busy dodging the rain while sprinkling in much-needed victories.
SRR swept Alexandria, winning 9-1 and 3-1, in a doubleheader May 4 in Alexandria. The win came at an important time after a loss to Brainerd May 2 at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School in Sauk Rapids.
In game one against Alexandria, the Storm scored three runs in the rst inning and ve more in the sixth. Taylor Lamoureux was 3-for3 with an RBI and two runs scored, Riley Turck added two hits while scoring twice, and Vivian Kusilek drove in three runs on two hits, including a double.
Pitcher Ava Knutson gave up four hits, striking out 14 to get the win.
In the game two win, Kusilek had two hits while Lamoureux, Campbell Arndt and Morgan Dorn had one each. Knutson struck out ve batters while giving up four hits for the win.
Storm head coach Emily McEwan said she was happy with the recent performances.
“During our games against Alexandria, they did everything we asked for,” McEwan said.
“They played as a team, they had composure, they attacked the ball,
and our pitcher dominated in the circle and had a con dence we haven’t seen yet. I’m very proud of our leaders and the way we executed.”
On a cold, rainy day May 6 at the SRR Invitational at Bob Cross Park in Sauk Rapids, the Storm played against Proctor, Maple Lake and Thief River Falls/Goodridge. They ended the day winning one of three games.
The Storm lost to Proctor 3-0 and Maple Lake 11-1 before defeating TF/G 14-4.
Against TRF/G, the Storm scored six runs in the rst and third innings to pull away. Turck drove in three runs, Lamoureux, Dorn and Bailey Seaman had two each, while Arndt and Kendal Craft each drove in one run.
Knutson pitched a four-hitter, striking out six, to get the win.
The Storm took on the Rocori Spartans May 9 at the SRRHS elds, losing 11-0.
“It wasn’t our best game, but we were aggressive at the plate, which I love to see,” McEwan said. “We attacked the ball early and made their defense make plays. I focused on talking, cheering and calling out plays for my teammates to get outs faster,” said Vivian Kusilek, sophomore center elder.
As the Spartan’s lead grew and the rain started, SRR needed to stay focused on the game.
“I had to forget the score and continue to push the team,” said Kendal Craft, senior right elder. “If we continue to worry and stress over the score, we as a team tend to roll over and not play to our full potential.”
Although the Storm fell against the Spartans, there were many highlights.
“A key highlight was our pitcher Ava,” Craft said. “Not many seventh graders can say they pitched as well as she did in a varsity game against one of the best teams in the sections and on top of it in the rain.”
The seniors, Marissa Mohs and Craft, were also acknowledged by their coaches and their teammates on Senior

“It is always a great night when we get to honor our seniors,” McEwan said. “It takes a lot of dedication to play a sport throughout your entire high school career, and we have great seniors this year.”
The Storm have surpassed last year’s winning record. At 6-7, SRR is excited for the rest of the season.
“The team is doing very well meshing together and including everyone; it feels like a little family,” Craft said. “We have been successful at playing well and never getting down on each other or the team.”
