Stone comes to life by hands of local craftsmen

OLEY – Over 5 tons of stone have been transformed into a symbol of honor this month by the hands of two Benton County

men. Ralph Katka, of Katka’s Monuments in Foley, and Allen Brisse, of Sauk Rapids, spent portions of the last year preparing for an artistic undertaking that is sure to pay homage to the nation’s military veterans for years to come. The two were involved with the design and creation of the 8-by-4 black granite monument, its pedestal and six benches that were placed at the center of Foley’s Veterans Memorial Oct. 29-30. The pieces, which are accompanied by nine flagpoles and flags, a concrete pathway and yetto-be-placed statues, are the culmination of a yearlong project prompted by members of Foley American Legion Post 298. The memorial, located near Highway 23 and the Benton County Courts Administration building, will become a landmark within the city. “It’s a good thing to be part of,” said Katka, who has worked in the granite industry for over 40 years. “My grandkids can say, “Grandpa made that.” … (The monument is) going to be there for a long, long time. It’s something to be proud of.” Legion member and memorial organizer Gary Swanson approached Katka about being involved in the project, and Swanson could not be happier with the results.

Allen Brisse, of Sauk Rapids, uses an air tool Oct. 13 to hand etch a granite stone that will be part of Foley’s Veterans Memorial. The monument was crafted at Katka’s Monuments in rural Foley.

“No matter what I threw at him, he said, ‘We can do this,’” Swanson said. “He’s been a great guy to work with. The piece is breathtaking.” Katka knows a thing or two about paying tribute to loved ones lost. After working in various facets of the granite industry in St. Cloud, Katka began his business on the homestead where he grew up in 1998. He specializes in headstone markers and takes pride in telling people’s

&

stories on stone. Katka said people can look at a marker without knowing someone and learn about that person by the etchings and designs incorporated into their memorial. “Granite is so beautiful to me,” Katka said. “I love it. … You can take a blank piece of granite and it looks pretty, but it ain’t nothing until you start putting some names, dates and carvings on it. That’s what makes it happen.” But, the vision of the veterans monument was not Katka’s alone. Legion members brought their ideas to Katka and Brisse, and the granite artists assisted in realizing the images. The stone has two sides. On one side features six military insignia at the base – Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. A WWII soldier, modern-day combat soldier, flag and bald eagle head surround the words, “Dedicated to all men and women who served honorably in our Armed Forces, and those serving today, preserving our freedom and protecting us and our nation world wide from all enemies.” On the reverse, a bugler calls over a field of military headstones where a young boy salutes. The words, “All gave some … some gave all” and “Never forgotten” remind visitors of the price of war. “That’s the most touching image I’ve ever put on a veterans monument by far,” said Brisse of the bugler and young boy. Brisse, a semi-retired artist who previously worked for Cold Spring Granite Company, has worked on multiple memorials throughout his career. “It depicts the sadness of a war,” he said. “I’ve never done anything close to that. There is so much to the image; it makes you want to cry.” The men spent many hours creating the design – the hand etching alone took nearly 10 days, not to mention the time to scale the images from a sheet of paper to the large slab. “You’re doing everything by hand; there’s no quick machine,” Katka said. “That’s what makes it so beautiful and so unique – all the time that’s spent on it.” Katka’s portion of the project included sandblasting the lettering and military branch insignia.

battle where the Allied forces of the United States, Britain, France and Canada attacked German troops on the beaches of Normandy. This year marks the 76th anniversary of the campaign, which gained a victory for the Allies and became a turning point for the war. Gama and Anderson found out they were chosen for the program in late 2019. They were supposed to travel to Washington, D.C. and France this past June, but the five- and seven-day trips were postponed one year due to the coronavirus pandemic. ter break. “I considered it my best Christmas present last year, to find out we get to go,” Anderson said. Gama has a strong in-

terest in historical events and seized the opportunity to be part of a program that would build on that interest, challenge her and make a difference. “I felt like it was going to be a very cool experience for both of us,” she said. Anderson remembers watching former president Ronald Reagan give a speech June 6, 1984, the 40th anniversary of D-Day. “Ever since then, I’ve always wanted to go to DDay, see those beaches, see those cemeteries,” she said. “It’s been on my history bucket list since I was a teenager.” In France, the two will walk the beaches of Normandy, the Normandy American Cemetery, the fortifications of the Atlantic Wall at the site of a German artillery battery and the streets of Paris. Gama and fellow students will then be called upon to present a

briefing, concerning some element of the Normandy Campaign at the appropriate site. Gama’s will be about Vichy France, a puppetgovernment that collaborated with Nazi Germany during World War II, and the French Resistance. “The goal for us is to kind of walk in the footsteps of some of the soldier’s major activities that happened in the Normandy campaign,” Anderson said. The program’s summer trips to D.C. and Normandy culminate a year-long course to deepen understanding of the conflict and conduct extensive research to write a fallen soldier’s biography. Since January, they have been studying World War II and the Normandy Campaign in depth, reading materials provided by the Albert H.

Benefits, services available for Benton County veterans Fielder wants to help with post-military success

In Benton County, veterans received over $12 million in disability compensation and pension payments in 2019. Overall, in the state of Minnesota in the same year, veterans received $1.3 trillion in disability compensation and pension payments.

FOLEY – Having served for 30 years in the United States Air Force, Benton County Veterans Services Officer George Fiedler feels a personal obligation to ensure the county’s veterans receive the benefits they earned through military service, ranging from medical aid to educational assistance. “I love coming to work every day, and I love interacting with the veterans,” Fiedler said, who reached the rank of colonel in the Air Force, a feat achieved by only 5% of military enrollees. “I like hearing their stories. I just like talking to them.” After working in information technology, Fielder now works as the lead on advising, counseling, assisting and supporting the estimated 3,300 veterans in Benton County. Every county in Minnesota is mandated by statute to appoint a veterans service officer such as

Fiedler. While in the Air Force, Fiedler managed and oversaw large-scale programs, like administering salaries to military workers – from newlyrecruited members to the president of the United States. Through federal and state programs, Fielder handles a broad spectrum of cases. Most commonly, he works with his contacts on disability compensation, which veterans qualify for if they experience medical problems stemming from military service. “Say you’re in the military, and let’s say you broke your ankle,” Fiedler proposed as an example. “It’s directly related to military service, you sought medical care when you were in the military, and you get out and three years later you have arthritis. You can file a claim for disability compensation.” The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will rate the claim, which equates to a monthly compensation stipend, taxfree, depending on conditions of the claim, like severity of the medical

condition and time served in the military. The most common claim among VA disability compensation program applicants is related to hearing loss and ringing ears, Fiedler said, especially if they served in combat. Unless having served in administrativetype roles, nearly all service members were constantly exposed to loud noises, a toll not often realized until after being discharged. Fiedler said health benefit services are also a prevailing asset through the veterans service office. His office helps veterans fill out forms to enroll in the St. Cloud VA Medical Center, including eligibility screening. As is true with many of these programs, one of the eligibility requirements involves means testing, which analyzes an individual’s income to determine how much financial assistance a veteran might need in receiving services or if they are eligible at all. Although most of what the Benton County Veterans Service Office does from day-to-day re-

lates to medical assistance, it can also facilitate aid in other ways. For example, Fiedler said the home loan program is another popular service. Like any other loan, the veteran would have to qualify and find a lender who executes that specific type of loan, but the VA guarantees it and the veteran does not have to worry about a down payment. Benton County veterans can go to their veterans service office for education benefits, financial assistance, obtaining military awards and records, life insurance, recording of DD-214s (military discharge certificates), help with medical and dental care applications, time of death services, and other services that can directly impact their lives, Fiedler said, and many of the benefits can extend to their immediate family too. There are many ways a veteran can receive services through Benton County, Fiedler said, whether a state or federal program. The best way to know what is best for any individual, he said, is to call the office at 320-9685044.

“I love coming to work every day, and I love interacting with the veterans. I like hearing their stories. I just like talking to them.” – George Fiedler, veterans service officer for Benton County
