When deciding what he wanted to do after graduation, David Bushman took the leap of faith and signed the line to join the Minnesota Army National Guard.
Minnesota Army National Guard members can be called to federal service in times of war.
Now, three years later, Bushman is serving his first overseas term in Iraq.
“The people are inclusive, positive and full of stories, but (the) situation is not my favorite,” said Bushman, of Albany. “I am not sure if I would like to do (another deployment). I have people I miss and goals I want to achieve back home in the states.”
Getting to meet new people and create fond memories is one thing Bushman will carry with him forever. However, his favorite memory from his time in the military thus far revolves around the people back home.
“My family came to visit me when I was in Virginia during advanced individual training,” Bushman said. “They came up for a few days over a break in training, and we rented a few jet skis to take out on the ocean, along with going to various locations near Washington, D.C.”
In the military, it is common for the serving member to head back home to see family and friends.
“When those people take time to come and see you instead, it’s a great feeling,” Bushman said.
Bushman recalled his family members who have served before him. This includes an uncle, an aunt and a grandpa. While looking up at them for military purposes, Bushman also has a huge support system from his immediate family and girlfriend.
