THOMPSON continued from page 5 being treated as second-class citizens. It also started the process of minority rights,” Thompson said. “There were African American soldiers who fought in the war and came back to segregation here in America; they were still being treated as second-class citizens. It was a time that women, minorities and other groups realized if they were good enough to fight and die for the country, they deserved a seat at the table, politically and socially.” Of particular interest to Thompson, regarding the Stearns County area, was the large presence of German immigrants at the time. Many of them were relatively new to the area and barely spoke English, yet they had great patriotism and honor. “During WWI, their loyalty to the country was suspect, they were looked at sideways,” Thompson said. “Yet, in terms of population, when you look at draft age eligible men, Stearns County had the highest enlistment rate in the state, 80% at the time. The loyalty of the German Americans might have been questioned, but the answers were in the numbers. They should be really proud of their service. Most were very recent immigrants, yet they turned around and went back to Europe to fight for their new country, to fight the kaiser.” According to Thompson, Stearns County saw an economic boom with the war, with young people working in war production facilities and the demand for crops and food for the war effort helping out farmers. And, as a state, Minnesotans have always been at the forefront of wanting to defend their country. “We are a fairly blue state, but a patriotic state,” he said. He recounted the story that when the Civil War first started, Minnesota

was first to offer troops to help the Union effort. “When Gov. Ramsey was walking through the halls of Congress with Abraham Lincoln, an agent came up and said Fort Sumter had been attacked. Gov. Ramsey turned to Lincoln and offered help. Hence, a Minnesota regiment was the first regiment called up for the defense of the union,” Thompson said. Thompson’s love of military history began early, and he has been studying and reading about the topic since the age of 8. He had a great-uncle, Charles Hayden, who was a WWI veteran from the Sauk Centre area. “He was a machine gunner in the 2nd Infantry, and they drove off a German attack at the Meuse’-Argonne, the largest land battle in WWI with the U.S. involved,” Thompson said.“It was bigger than any single WWII battle and drove the Germans to seek peace terms. I was quite young when he passed away.” Hayden received the Silver Star and Purple Heart medals, with the stories being handed down to Thompson through his grandmother’s sister. Hayden himself had not shared these things with many. “Combat veterans tend not to talk about their service much,” Thompson said. What he heard about Hayden propelled him into a lifetime of gathering military stories. He has spoken with hundreds of WWI and other veterans through his 20 years volunteering at the museum, followed by 10 years of working there full time, with the last four as curator. “I have been fortunate to be able to read a lot of personal accounts of soldiers, to handle the uniforms, see the helmets and read from their diaries,” he said. “It turns them into real people versus names in a history book.” The preservation of history will continue and even greatly expand. Since its inception in 1977, the museum on the grounds of Camp Ripley has been in a 12,000-square-foot facility. That facility has been outgrown, and with the recent announcement of appropriations in a bonding bill, a new $13 million, state-of-the-art 40,000-square-foot campus will be built across the river from the current Minnesota Military Museum. The projected completion date of the project is Spring 2023. “This will greatly expand the number of Minnesota stories we can share with people, from the Civil War to the War on Terror,” Thompson said. Currently, the museum is featuring an all-encompassing special exhibit on Minnesota and WWI, as well as a permanent exhibit on WWI in the main museum. Through these exhibits, visitors are able to gain a much better understanding of epic war that changed warfare forever.

Civil War musicians and their battles Some people did not see Civil War veteran Charles Tilton Whitcomb (Nov. 15, 1837 – April 20, 1927) as a soldier, even in his day. Whitcomb was involved in 60 battles from 1861-65, including Yorktown, Fair Oaks, Peach Orchard, Maryland Campaign, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and Petersburg, and was at Appomattox for surrender of Robert E. Lee to Ulysses S. Grant. But as a musician, he was viewed more as an auxiliary than a soldier, which is odd because when the war started, musician groups were among the By HERMAN LENSING first formed by volunteer units. Staff Writer Musicians were initially a major part of any Civil War unit. Their numbers dropped as the war went on, but they remained a part of units during the war. Most regiments had a band playing tunes to boost morale and to set a marching pace. Some musicians were employed in battle strategy, playing signals directing the troops. Musicians were mandated by Army regulations. Every company was expected to have at least two musicians, and regiments could have 16 to 24 members. Generals from both sides promoted the use of bands as morale boosters. Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee is quoted as saying, "I don't think we could have an Army without music." Drummers, fifers and buglers were the most common musicians. Drummers needed to learn 39 different beats and buglers learned 49 different calls. They marched with troops during a battle. Most of the drummers setting the marching pace for troops, were younger than 18 and marched near the head of the column. As such, they were in harm’s way in any battle – and they were targets to be brought down. Buglers were the primary signal senders with a unit. Those calls included battle commands, including the well-known “charge” call, and calls for meal time. In-camp regiments often had brass bands. The bands were also part
of providing concerts for prolonged campings or sieges. The music was appreciated by both sides and there is more than one story of either side requesting selection from bands across the no-man’s land. Being a musician did not keep one out of combat. Those other than drummers, fifers and buglers were expected to serve as medics. They had to run into the combat zones and retrieve wounded soldiers, and at times got caught in crossfires. The war, and military musicians in a way, created a sense of American music. Prior to the war, there were strong regional traditions of music. As the war dragged on, musicians came in contact with musicians from other states, exchanged music, incorporated different traditions into their music and created some new forms. When the war ended, variations of “Home, Sweet Home,”“Maryland, My Maryland,”“When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” “Dixie,” “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “Battle Cry of Freedom” became popular nationwide. One song from the Civil War is heard almost daily worldwide at military posts and at military funerals across the nation. Following the Seven Days campaign in 1862 in Virginia, Union General Daniel Butterfield reworked the call for going to sleep to the now-familiar “Taps”. It was played by his bugler and became the end-of-the-day call for the military. Prior to using that tune, the lights out call was followed by three drumbeats or taps. The word “taps” became associated with the final call of the day and the name stuck. Butterfield had named the tune “Extinguish Lights.” The Civil War also was the first to use “Taps” at a funeral. Capt. John Tidball used it instead of firing guns as a salute when near the front. He did not want the enemy thinking it was an attack. While musicians no longer march in combat, they are still a strong tradition in the service; all branches of the military have an elite band. The best known may well be the U.S. Marine Corp Band. There is also the Pershing’s Own U.S. Army Band; The U.S. Air Force Band, the known division being the The Air Force Strings, a string ensemble; and the U.S. Navy Band, which has a high-level jazz band, the U.S. Navy Band Commodores. All of them carry on a long tradition of service and morale-lifting efforts for the U.S. military.

75 years later Carstens remembers Breitbach brother who didn’t return home during World War II By CAROL MOORMAN Staff Writer
Dorothy Carstens, on Oct. 20 in her Melrose home, looks at a photo of her brother, Donnie Breitbach, in his military uniform. He was killed Feb. 19, 1945, while serving his country in Roth, Germany. PHOTO BY CAROL MOORMAN
MELROSE – A memory box with Donald “Donnie” Breitbach’s military memorabilia hangs on a wall in Dorothy and Howard Carstens’ Melrose home. Next to his dog tags is a Purple Heart. A World War II medal hangs over a letter from President Franklin Roosevelt, and there is a pocketknife Breitbach carried with him wherever he went, including his short stint in the Army during World War II. Seventy-five years after Breitbach died on Feb. 19, 1945, while serving his country, Dorothy still gets teary-eyed when remembering her oldest brother, one of the five siblings known as the Breitbach Bunch, raised in Elrosa. “When he was home on furlough, before he went to Germany, he told Mom he wasn’t coming back. He just knew that,” she said Oct. 20 sitting around the kitchen table in her and husband Howard’s Melrose home, a Breitbach family scrapbook in front of her.

Korea an experience for farm kid Hector saw other side of the world while stationed overseas By DIANE LEUKAM Staff Writer OSAKIS – As one of three children of John and Ruth Hector on a family farm in the 1950s, Chuck Hector was needed at home. The military was not in his life plan for this Osakis farmer, but after several deferments there were no more options. He was drafted at the age of 22 and joined the U.S. Army. “It was the only time I ever saw my dad cry, in front of the draft board,” Hector said Oct. 19 at his home. It turned out, Hector didn’t mind the idea. “I wanted to go; I was getting tired of milking cows and working so hard,” he said. “That was September 1954. I was in one week short of two years.” Those two years were the only ones Hector, 89, has spent away from the farm. He still lives there, in the house where he was born. The home farm was 280 acres, and was typical for its day. “We had dairy, hogs, chickens and grain, like everybody did back then,” Hector said. His grandson and his family live just yards from him in another home on the building site. Their three small children often keep him company, especially since his wife, Hilda, passed away six years ago. Though he keeps busy mowing lawn in the summertime and tending the outdoor wood-fueled boiler in the winter, there is still plenty of time to think. Unlike many veterans who saw combat, Hector has mostly good memories of his time in the service. Hector began with basic training at Fort Leonard Wood in the Ozark Mountains in Missouri. Then it was on to Fort Carson in Colorado. “I was in artillery there for a while, but they figured I would be a good mechanic,” Hector said. A nine-week mechanics program at Fort Sill in Oklahoma taught him the Chuck Hector was drafted in 1954 and served in the military for two years, skills he needed to work on tanks and other large equipment. HECTOR continued from page 14 “It was a good job; I enjoyed mechanical things anyway,” he said. “It sure beats running up and down a hill with a rifle.” After receiving orders to go to Korea, Hector made the trip by ship out of Washington State. He did not enjoy the experience. “That was enough cruises for me,” he said. “We were crammed in there; we had bunks all the way to the ceiling about two feet apart, and it was hot and stuffy down there. We slept every other guy – my feet were in his face and his feet were in my face every other way and it was not the most pleasant trip.” Hector was able to secure a bunk on the top in case someone got sick, and was fortunate enough to not get sick himself. About a week later they docked in Korea, north of Seoul . Hector remembers it well, with the lack of sanitation in the impoverished nation creating a smell they were aware of before even leaving the ship. The Korean War was over, but the people were still suffering greatly. “We went to Soule and it was completely bombed out, at the capitol building the windows were shot out; there was nothing,” he said. People lived in small huts with straw roofs, dirt floors and little food. “I don’t know how they survived – there was nothing to eat. I never saw a chicken or a cow or a pig; all they had was rice and we thought, ‘what are we over here for, this county’s not worth fighting for, there’s nothing here!’” he said. “But now, I guess it’s changed. They’re building cars and I guess they’re really prospering over there.” The U.S. soldiers in Korea lived eight men to a tent, in weather that was similar to Minnesota, though with less snow in the winter. Hector has photos of many of the things they did, such as shaving using water heated with a propane torch. He keeps letters from friends and of everyone in the barracks, and knows he was fortunate to receive the most mail. One memory that strikes very close to home, literally, is that the military had their eggs shipped over to them in 30-dozen crates. At least one of those crates was marked “Swift and Company, Sauk Centre, Minnesota.” Hector’s parents sold their eggs to Swift and Company, so some of the eggs he ate in Korea might have come from his own home farm. During Hector’s time in Korea, he worked mostly on tanks, replacing many engines along the way. “We just had to keep them running,” he said. “They were a V-12 aircooled engine, 810 HP, and none of them were any good. They got too hot. They were air cooled and they should have been water cooled.” When it was time for R&R, Hector has fond memories of a one-week trip to Japan and another to the island of Okinawa. He remembers the Japanese as being very nice people and very neat, all of them wearing white shirts and taking their shoes off before going into the house. He still has souvenirs from

HECTOR continued from page 15 those trips, like intricate pool cues and a photo album made of teak wood. All in all, it made for an experience he just would not have had if he’d stayed on the farm. He is glad he went into the service and was able to see new places and peoples. “I think I learned more in those two years than I ever did before,” he said. He also carries with him the certainty that the people of Korea appreciate the sacrifices made by American soldiers for their country. In 2016, Hector and his kids took a trip to Norway where his grandfather was born. At one stop,

there was a bus with people from Korea and he struck up a conversation with one woman who was fluent in English. “I said, ‘you must be from Korea,’” Hector said. “She was kind of ashamed because the Koreans were considered second class and were looked down upon. But after I told her I was over there for a year, and she knew I was in the military, she said, ‘you saved us from the communists’ and she came and gave me a big hug. That made it all worthwhile.”

Grateful for life in the States
Deployments to Bosnia, Kuwait eye-openers for Lt. Col. Jacobson By SARAH COLBURN Staff Writer MELROSE – Nate Jacobson’s service to the country sent him across the United States and to Germany, Bosnia and Kuwait. Like a turnof-the-century love story, it also connected him with the woman who is now his wife. Jacobson is 30 years into his military career and currently serves as an active duty reservist. In his civilian life, as well as his military life, he’s a physical therapist – a career path he stumbled upon after enlisting. At the age of 51, Jacobson serves as a Lieutenant Colonel and said his time in the military has allowed him to encounter people he’d never otherise have the opportunity to meet.
knucklehead,” Jacobson said. “He knew it would be a good fit for me.” He enlisted 13 hours before the United States’ Invasion of Panama. Upon enlisting, Jacobson was so embarrassed by his poor college grades he didn’t even submit his college credits, which would have earned him immediate promotion points. As all new recruits do, he took an aptitude test and was given a list of occupations. Linguist was on the list and Jacobson decided he’d learn a Nate Jacobson (far left) is pictured with his weapons collection site crew in Bosnia. JACOBSON continued from page 18 University. Through the Montgomery Gi Bill, he received a bachelor of science that allowed him to apply for physical therapy programs. He went on to St. Scholastica to receive his master’s in physical therapy as he continued drills for the guard. He worked his way up to Sergeant First Class as a Platoon Sergeant and was deployed to Bosnia with the Red Bull, the 2/194 Infantry Battalion. He spent 10 months away from his wife and his two kids, Charlotte and Nicholas, who were 7 and 5 at the time. He was boots on the ground in Bosnia for six months, leading a platoon of about 32 soldiers. Their platoon was assigned to run patrols. They’d patrol areas of Bosnia and occasionally run weapons raids and collections. On collection days they’d set up different areas and farmers and local people would bring weapons and explosives they no longer wanted for collection. The people there, he explained, had
stockpiles of weapons in anticipation of hostilities breaking out again. But some, over time, became unstable or were things they no longer wanted to keep. Their platoon would talk with local leaders of the various towns and districts and see what their needs were, what their questions and concerns were and how they could collaborate to keep the peace. During his time in Bosnia, Jacobson also helped organize fundraisers for school supplies and equipment. “To see the atrocities, it makes you appreciate the United States,” he said. “You’re driving through a town and see all the bullet holes from machine gun fire and whole sections that are no longer livable. It’s a real eye-opener.” The devastation and destruction, he said, is something that’s difficult to explain. “It gives you an appreciation for the security and the peace that we have here in the U.S.,” he said. “I can leave my family without worrying about their safety and someone being there to protect
Kuwait twice, once to run a combat support hospital and serve in clinics throughout Kuwait. He did so as a physical therapist helping soldiers recover from training injuries, chronic pain and sportsrelated injuries. The second time he was the troop medical clinic commander in charge of overseeing the medical clinic which housed the air and ground evacuation teams for injuries. During all of his deployments, including a stint in Germany for a year, Jacobson credits his wife with holding things together back in the United States. “When I’m deployed, I’m with a group of people in a similar situation,” he said. “My wife, when I’m gone, is on her own. She’s so smart and resilient and capable. I’ve seen relationships with the soldiers who don’t have that, a husband or wife who doesn’t have those capabilites and it causes so many issues. Having that support at home is critical to being able to perform well while Nate Jacobson (back row, fifth from left) was deployed to Kuwait in 2018 to deployed.” work as a physical therapist overseeing the medical clinic that housed air and ground evacuation teams.
them.” He said his fellow soldiers who’ve experienced the same type of travels can understand. As a physical therapist, he said, he may get an old WWII veteran or a Korean War veteran or a Vietnam veteran who may not share stories with their family but they’ll share them with him. “We have similar experiences and can relate,” he said. “My job is
to make sure (the people in the U.S.) never have to experience that and they retain their rights to protest and speak their mind. That’s a wonderful right to have.” After Bosnia, Jacobson returned to the states and became a First Lieutenant with the Army Reserve combat support hospital stationed at Ft. Snelling in St. Paul. A year into his role there, his son, Nicholas, got sick with hemolytic–uremic

syndrome, caused by what doctors believe was a virus, and Jacobson donated his kidney to his son. He thought that would bring his military career to a close but, because he was already active duty, he was allowed to continue to serve despite having only one kidney. His platoon was tasked with preparing to set up and operate a field hospital if they were to be deployed. As a unit we were sent to

A nerve-wracking, exciting experience Gravdahl part of aggressive action, transition of power and sustainment in Iraq By DIANE LEUKAM Staff Writer ALBANY – “I remember when we got off the plane to Iraq … opening up the back doors and the rush of hot air that came into the body of the plane; it was ridiculous how hot it was,” Andrew Gravdahl said. “Here was this Norwegian country boy in the desert. Everything was bright, hot off the sand; it was nerve-wracking and exciting, a whole new experience.” Gravdahl talked about his military deployments from his Albany home the evening of Oct. 25. It had been a busy weekend with his wife, Katherine, daughter Eleanor, 6, and son Emerson, 2. As a 2000 graduate of Pequot Lakes, Gravdahl had considered joining the Marines or active duty Army, but decided he wanted to go to school first. By the time he graduated, he felt like he was just going through the motions, and what he was doing wasn’t enough. He still felt the military tugging at him and decided to pay the Brainerd recruiting officer a visit. Before he left the office that day, he had signed up with the Minnesota Army National Guard. “Whatever he said, I was sold,” Gravdahl said. That was 2004.

The history and significance of Veterans Day On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. On Nov. 11, 1919, Armistice Day was commemorated for the first time. In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed the day should be "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for
the victory." There were plans for parades, public meetings and a brief suspension of business activities at 11 a.m. In 1926, the United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I and declared that the anniversary of the armistice should be commemorated with prayer and thanksgiving. The Congress also requested that the
president should "issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on Nov. 11 and invite the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples." An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) was
approved on May 13, 1938, which made Nov. 11 in each year a legal holiday, known as Armistice Day. This day was originally intended to honor veterans of World War I. A few years later, World War II required the largest mobilization of servicemen in the history of the United States and later the American forces fought in Korea. In 1954, the veterans service organizations
urged Congress to change the word "Armistice" to "Veterans." Congress approved this change and on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor all American veterans, whereever and whenever they had served. In 1968 the Uniforms Holiday Bill (Public Law 90363 (82 Stat. 250)) made an attempt to move Veterans Day to the fourth Monday of October. The bill took
effect in 1971. However, this caused a lot of confusion as many states disagreed with this decision and continued to hold Veterans Day activities on Nov. 11. In 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97 (89 Stat. 479), which stated that Veterans Day would again be observed on Nov. 11 from 1978 onwards. Veterans Day is still observed on Nov. 11.

It was during this time he met Katherine, who was also in the Minnesota National Guard as part of a support unit. Her main work was as a petroleum specialist, but she was assigned as a machine gunner for the Sauk Centre unit. “Back home during traditional drilling status, she brought us fuel for the tanks; we couldn’t run without it, so it was super important,” Gravdahl said. He had transferred her out of his squad at

the early onset of the deployment, moving her to another squad within the platoon. “It was an odd twist of fate,” he said. “Despite me moving her, she ended up as one of my crew members. We were both hit by an IED, and our relationship changed to [us asking], ‘how are you doing, are you making it through OK?’ We were checking in on each other and our friendship grew.” Now, as a married man with two young children, Gravdahl can look back on his deployments and the time afterward from a different perspective.
