BOOKS& INTERVENTIONS e-Learning CERTIFICATION EVENTS&TRAINING ACCREDITATION CONSULTING The Starr Global Learning Network (SGLN) is the professional training and consultation arm of Starr Commonwealth, emerging from the vision that : knowledge + empowerment = impact. SGLN provides guidance and expertise to “helpers” from around the world in the form of research, publications, e-learning courses, in-person trainings, conferences and events, professional certifications, as well as school/organization-wide accreditation. These products and services are offered through SGLN’s three key training programs: The National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children (TLC), Reclaiming Youth International (RYI), and Glasswing (GW). The “Starr Model” was born out of a consilience of Starr’s 100+ year history of changing the lives of young people and the knowledge and expertise developed within each of these three programs. Central to the model is the Circle of Courage and its four universal growth needs: belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity. SGLN is the delivery vehicle for this profoundly impactful model.

starr.org/SGLN

The National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children (TLC) Founded in 1990, TLC’s mission is to bring out the best in every traumatized child by training child caring professionals to create environments where children can flourish. Children who have experienced adversity behave in ways that defy logic, reason and the best intentions of the adults in their lives. They are often labeled as “bad” or “unreachable” because of their trauma-driven behaviors. Traditional therapies often fall short because they aim to change the behavior rather than the trauma, the root cause of the symptoms and reactions. TLC has trained over 6,000 professionals to help traumatized children move from victim to survivor thinking, and continues to share its knowledge with professionals throughout the world.

TLC’s SITCAP® model (Structured Sensory Interventions for Traumatized Children, Adolescents and Parents) is centered on the concept that changing behavior isn’t possible until you change the sensory experience of a traumatized child. SITCAP® provides a powerful framework for helping by engagement in program activities to allow them to experience themselves as safe and empowered. The SITCAP® model programs include sensory-based interventions like drawing, guided imagery and other forms of expressive art to make professionals a witness to the child’s experience. It helps children present visual representations of their trauma themes such as hurt and anger which gives professionals an opportunity to see what the child sees as they view themselves, others and the world around them. Developed and used for over two decades, field tested in school and agency settings, SITCAP® is supported by the latest neuroscience research and has been featured in scholarly journals and books that focus on childhood trauma. The SITCAP®-ART and I Feel Better Now! programs are listed on SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence Programs and Practices.

SITCAP® TLC’s revolutionary approach: leading the field in the treatment of childhood trauma

“There’s just no reasoning with him.” That may sound like a perfectly understandable reaction to a child who “just won’t listen” – until you realize that he can’t.

CIRCLE OF COURAGE The Circle of Courage® is a model of positive youth development based on the universal principle that to be emotionally healthy all youth need a sense of belonging, mastery, independence and generosity.

BELONGING - In Native American and First Nations cultures, significance was nurtured in communities of belonging. Lakota anthropologist Ella Deloria described the core value of belonging in these simple words: “Be related, somehow, to everyone you know.” Treating others as kin forges powerful social bonds that draw all into relationships of respect. MASTERY - Competence in traditional cultures is ensured by guaranteed opportunities for mastery. Children were taught to carefully observe and listen to those with more experience. A person with greater ability was seen as a model for learning, not as a rival. Each person strives for mastery for personal growth, but not to be superior to someone else. With success in surmounting challenges, the desire to achieve is strengthened. INDEPENDENCE - Power in Western culture was based on dominance, but in tribal traditions it meant respecting the right for independence. In contrast to obedience models of discipline, Native teaching was designed to build respect and teach inner discipline. From earliest childhood, children were encouraged to make decisions, solve problems, and show personal responsibility. Adults modeled, nurtured, taught values, and gave feedback, but children were given abundant opportunities to make choices without coercion. GENEROSITY - Finally, virtue was reflected in the pre-eminent value of generosity. The central goal in Native American childrearing is to teach the importance of being generous and unselfish. In the words of a Lakota Elder, “You should be able to give away your most cherished possession without your heart beating faster.” In helping others, youth create their own proof of worthiness: they make a positive contribution to another human life.

TM

In 1997, Circle of Courage, Inc. formed the nonprofit entity Reclaiming Youth International (RYI). The Circle of Courage® is a model of positive youth development based on the universal principle that to be emotionally healthy all youth need a sense of belonging, mastery, independence and generosity. This unique model integrates the cultural wisdom of tribal peoples, the practical wisdom of professional pioneers with troubled youth, and findings of modern youth development research. The Circle of Courage provides the philosophical foundation for the work of Reclaiming Youth International.

Glasswing (GW) GLASS

WING

In the 1990’s the process of racial healing was introduced to Starr. Starr now offers these healing experiences to schools, human service organizations, faith communities, and the corporate sector. Glasswing addresses issues related to marginalized groups excluded from belonging, emphasizing the Oneness of Human Kind. Racism and all other forms of discrimination are destructive forces worldwide. In addition to a variety of training opportunities, Glasswing consultants can provide evaluation and guidance in situations where schools or other organizations have experienced the crisis of hate in any of its forms. The goal of these efforts is to bring together all members of the human family, embracing the value of diversity with dignity.

1

MATERIAL TO THE SPIRITUAL: When we see someone, we instantly size him or her up based on his or her appearance. Subconsciously we make assumptions about what we see, hear, and think about others. We must make the shift to get beyond what’s material or physical and try to see and understand what’s underneath.

2

COGNITIVE TO THE AFFECTIVE: Requires us to use our hearts as well as our heads. We must try to expand our capacity to experience the reality of others through their feelings and resist the urge to try to analyze or “fix” someone or something.

3

CERTAINTY TO CURIOSITY: Encourages us to “wonder” rather than to “know” and to become more curious about things in life. Not making judgments about rightness or wrongess increases communication and understanding, even though we may see things very differently.

4

SOLUTION TO TRANSFORMATION: People have been trying to find “The Solution,” to racism for hundreds of years, with questionable success. Rather than trying to agree on “The Solution,” we are more interested in tapping into our reservoir of courage to make changes in ourselves. Only then can we play a part in changing the world.

5

DISCUSSION AND DEBATE TO DIALOGUE: Unlike discussion or debate, dialogue does not require a decision or specific results. There is no convincing others of our point of view, and no emphasis on winning. The goal of dialogue is to look beyond the superficial and automatic answers to questions. In true dialogue, listening is important and there is much more inquiry and reflection.

The Five Shifts The Five Shifts serve as a model for humans trying to solve problems with new approaches. As we address the challenges of dehumanization and desensitization, it is helpful to look at these problems from a new perspective.
