Congratulations goes to Roma Middle School’s Mariachi Escandon. This group earned second place overall in the Middle School Division at the national Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza Competition on Dec. 2, 2016 in San Antonio, Texas. The mariachi competed against 12 other groups in their category from across the state of Texas, as well as three groups from Las Vegas, Nevada. “The students showed real poise on stage and they were very well

prepared for this level of competition,” said Dr. Adrian Guerra, Roma ISD Performing Arts Director. “At such a young age it can be overwhelming to perform in such a large forum, but they stepped up to the challenge and showed that they are one of the mariachi groups to watch for the future. Their show was fantastic and I know they left the audience wanting more. I congratulate the students on an awesome performance and thank their directors and

parents for their overwhelming support to ensure this group’s continued success at Roma ISD!” The members of Roma ISD’s Mariachi Escandon include Alexia D. Walking is one of the least expensive and easiest way to get fit. It is a new year and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service wants to provide you with an opportunity to walk towards a healthier life in 2017, comments Yolanda Morado Starr County FCS Agent. We want you to join us all in Walking Across Texas!! Walk Across Texas is a fun and flexible way to exercise. Just get together with seven other people, friends, neighbors, coworkers, or family members-and start walking, or jogging or biking. We also have a way to give you credit for gardening, housework and other tasks. You can walk together with friends, as a classroom in school, as a family, as co-workers or all by yourself. You can walk around beautiful Ft. Ringgold, at parks or parking lots around town, in your neighborhood, or on a treadmill. You can adjust your “walking” to fit your lifestyle, fast pace, slow pace, running, morning, noon or evening. You keep track of your miles, to see if you can walk the 830 miles “across Town in 8 weeks. Report your totals to see how you are doing to a team captain or you keep track of the miles walked to see how you measure up. Teams are forming the first week in January. Walk Across Texas offers an opportunity to meet new people, start a healthy habit, enjoy a friendly competition, get fit, have fun, and spend prime time with your family, friends, co-workers, club members, neighbors and classmates. Walking with friends and family can improve your health and enhance relationships. Plus, walking with others will make walking more enjoyable. It is important to note that many people will have to work up to being active for 30 minutes a day. Starting slowly like walking 10 minutes a day will improve the chances of success. Physical activity does not need to be strenuous to produce health benefits. Walking the dog, taking walking breaks during the day or taking the stairs or parking far at parking lots are all good ways to work walking into your daily schedule. To find out more about Walk Across Texas call the County Extension Office at 956-4872306. Research has proven that by the end of Walk Across Texas, you’ll have a healthy habit that will last a lifetime!

The LORD is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

All other entries may register on-site at the end of South Britton Avenue, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The fee of $25 per entry may be paid and an entry card for each vehicle obtained from Parade Chairman Tissa Peterson at the USPS mailbox on South Britton Avenue next to the Compass Drive-In Bank after the vehicle is in line.

Park and send a representative. Floats will be judged on theme, creativity, and workmanship. The theme and the name of the sponsoring organization should be clearly displayed on the float. For more information, call Tissa Peterson at 5001430, text preferred, or by email at tissapete@aol. com or call Monica at 488-0122 during business hours. The parade will once again proceed east on Main to historic Fort Ringgold. The City of Rio Grande City and TXDOT are asking that no vehicles park on Main Street along the parade route so that emergency vehicles may come through if necessary. Parking is on the side streets and parallel streets north and south of Main.

The city of Rio Grande City asks that prizes and candy not be thrown from vehicles. If they are to be distributed, it should be done by persons walking, so children are not tempted to approach vehicles. With floats and vehicles lining up on Water Street, walking groups will line up on the median of South Britton. Only bands, JROTC, and horses will line up on Britton Avenue north of Main Street. There will be rosette ribbons and money prizes for the top floats. Checks will be presented at the Parade of Champions at 3:00 on Saturday, February 25. Out-of-county entries, horses, and marching groups, including bands, are encouraged to participate free of charge.

On November students participated in the nation’s largest mock election for President of the United States of America. In the days prior to Election Day, lessons were held during library class time regarding the electoral process and insight to the presidential nominees from the four major tickets was also presented. The students were able to experience as closely as possible how to cast a voting ballot. All students who voted even received an “I Voted” sticker.

Roma ISD TexPREP Students Attend HESTEC

Wild hibiscus flowers are stunning! When you walk the trails of the thorny brush country you expect to see interesting things but, now and then, you see something that’s beyond your expectations. Such a sight is the flower on a small shrub we call a heart-leafed hibiscus. The vivid color defies description but I’ll try. (No printed picture does it justice.) Basically it’s crimson but that’s just a variation of red. Artists refer to the clarity of a color and also to its saturation. This color, to my eye, is both exceptionally clear and fully saturated. In fact, it seems to have an intensity which could only come from an inner glow and not just be the reflection of light. The color is alive and, when you first see one, stops

of the pubescence and the leaves are heart shaped with small teeth along their edges. The flowers, with five petals, have a short column in their centers to which the stamens are attached and from the end of which arises the style which has five parts, like tiny fingers, each of which has a stigma at its tip. When fertilized, the seedpod which forms is called a capsule

and is quite distinctive. W h e n mature, i t ’ s shaped like a l i t t l e brown tire and inside are a circular row of flattened seeds. I remember, from my childhood, the seedpods on hollyhocks which were very similar. The heart-leafed hibiscus is, in fact, classified in the same plant family as hollyhocks: the mallow family. Want a stunning touch of color in your yard? Try a wild hibiscus.

Students from Roma Middle School and Ramiro Barrera Middle School who are participating in the TexPREP Program attended HESTEC at the UT-RGV campus in Edinburg, Texas. Since its inception, the Hispanic Engineering, Science, and Technology (HESTEC) Week has become a nationally recognized model for promoting science, technology, engineering and math

(STEM) careers among young people of all backgrounds and ethnicities. The HESTEC objectives are to raise an awareness of the opportunities available within STEM fields, encourage students to consider careers in STEM fields, and to promote higher education in the Rio Grande Valley. Roma ISD students attended the Middle School Challenge.

The students had the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities and visit educational exhibits that exposed them to different exciting areas of STEM. Congratulations to the students for attending this significant and innovative event. Thank you to the teachers, chaperons, and bus drivers who accompanied the students to the HESTEC Challenge. The plants on which these flowers are found are also called tulip del monte or mountain rosemallow. To avoid any confusion, the scientific name is Hibiscus cardiophyllus. Whatever you call it, it’s a stunning addition to any landscape or flower garden. It’s native here and so doesn’t demand any special care and it blooms well all summer if there’s a little rain. In fact, the Johnson Wildflower Garden lists it as one of the few plants that bloom all year! We had a plant here at the ranch that had 18 blossoms open on one day. Wow! The plants have a woody base; they’re perennial small shrubs. They typically grow to be about 3 feet tall but the ones I’ve seen in the wild seldom grow over 18 inches. The leaves and stems are pubescent which means that they’re fuzzy like felt. The medium green leaf color looks touched with silver because
