Continue from Front Page senator for Central Texas, Bexar County and the Border Region. Her legendary work ethic is reflected in her 100 percent voting record, having cast 55,666 consecutive votes as of 2015, and her perfect attendance in the Texas Senate since 1987, except for breaking quorum deliberately to prevent an untimely re-redistricting that the U.S. Supreme Court (2006) ruled violated the Voting Rights Act and disenfranchised voters in SD 21. She has sponsored and passed 895 bills and 52 substantive resolutions. Showing her bipartisan effectiveness, in the 2015 Republican-dominated Texas Legislature she passed 102 bills, breaking her personal record and passing more bills than any other legislator that year. First elected in 1986 she has received more than 900 awards and honors for her legislative, public service and professional work, including more than 280 in communication. On Monday, Nov. 14, she prefiled the first 41 Senate Bills (SB) and the first Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) of the 85th Texas Legislative Session that will convene on Tuesday, Jan. 10. “I look forward to working with Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and my Senate colleagues to pass legislation that improves quality of life for Texas families, including by enhancing public and higher education and health and human services,” she said. “What’s more, count on me to continue to cast every vote by balancing the needs and priorities of SD 21 with those of our great state.” Her priorities include early and higher education and health and human services, especially for the very young, the very old, the very poor and persons with disabilities.

Veterans Middle School Library County officials meet with Henry Cuellar Grulla Elementary School Celebrated Banned Books Week Thanks Custodial Staff

The library at Veterans Middle School celebrated Banned Books Week by holding a Banned Books Bingo on October 3, 2016. VMS students won free tickets to attend the Banned Books Bingo at the library. Students were given a brief lesson on Celebrating the Freedom to Read and they astounded when they realized that some of their favorite books or other books that they had read were banned at one time or another. Echoes of shock and “that’s an amazing book!”, “why?”, “I can’t believe that” were heard from students as the Bingo cards with titles of Banned Books were read aloud. VMS students were especially interested when Mrs. Cindy Hinojosa, VMS Librarian, explained the significance of the banned book, Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl. The VMS library and students all had a wonderful time promoting Banned Books Week with this educational activity. Pictured above are VMS students who participated and those who won at the VMS Library’s Banned Books Bingo.

BEFORE

As always, North Grammar Elementary Administration and Staff would like to THANK our Longhorn families for their continued support.

Prayer to Our Lady Undoer Of Knots Virgin Mary, Mother of Fair Love, Mother who never abandons a child in need, Mother whose hands never cease to work for Her children because they are moved by the Divine Love and Infinite Mercy that exist in your heart, turn your compassionate eyes toward me and see the snarl of knots that exist in my life. You know just how much despair and pain they cause me. You know how paralyzed I am by them. Mary, Mother to whom God has given the charge of undoing the knots in the lives of His children, I place the ribbon of my life into Your hands. No one, not even the Evil One himself can take it away from Your merciful hands. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone. Powerful Mother, by Your grace and intercession with Your Son Jesus, my Savior, receive today this “knot” (specify it if possible). I beg You to undo it now and forever for the glory of God. You are my hope. You are the sole consolation that God gives me, a fortress for my weaknesses, the healing of my miseries, and my deliverance from all that keeps me from Christ. Hear my plea. Keep me, guide me and protect me. You are my only safe refuge. Our Lady Undoer of Knots, pray for me! Amen! L. C.

IBC Bank Encourages Young People To ‘Get Smart About Credit’ IBC Bank is teaming up with the American Bankers Association Foundation’s Get Smart About Credit program as part of an ongoing effort to teach teens how to effectively use credit. The program, now in its 14th year, is a national campaign of volunteer bankers who help young people develop responsible credit habits. IBC Bank used the program’s awareness day – Get Smart About Credit Day – held

Thursday, Oct. 20 as an opportunity to visit over 20 schools throughout Texas and Oklahoma and reaching more than 2,800 students during 80 presentations. The bank’s lessons encompass important financial obstacles facing teens, including paying for college, building good credit habits, managing their money and protecting their identity. “Participating in Get Smart About Credit gives us a unique opportunity to teach teens and

young adults in our community the importance of money management,” said IBC Bank Chairman and CEO, Dennis E. Nixon. “With these lessons, students can begin building a foundation toward a financially fit future.” IBC Bank offers these seven tips to give students an edge on mastering personal finance: 1. You are in charge. You are responsible for your finances and

you should act accordingly by creating a realistic budget or plan and sticking to it. 2. Watch Spending. You control your money, determining how you spend or save it. Pace spending and increase saving by cutting unnecessary expenses like eating out or shopping so that your money can last throughout the school year. 3. Use Credit Wisely. Understand the responsibilities and benefits of credit. How you handle your credit in college could affect you well after graduation. Shop around for a card that best suits your needs. 4. Utilize Your Bank Account. Banks are more than money in a vault. They offer valuable services that students can benefit from like check cashing, debit cards, mobile and online banking, balance alerts, personal loans, direct deposit, financial education and some offer identity theft protection. 5. Be particular when it comes to money. Don’t just trust anyone with your money. Be skeptical of classmates, friends or salespeople

STARR COUNTY TOWN CRIER, NOVEMBER 30, 2016, SECTION II, PAGE 3

Reticulate collared lizards are rare and attractive In the past 15 years or more, I’ve seen only 3 reticulate collared lizards but for those few sightings I’m exceedingly thankful. The rare reticulates are classed as a species of concern being in serious decline due to habitat loss and it’s illegal to collect them. I’m privileged to live on a ranch with undeveloped areas where native wildlife is protected and can thrive. These lizards are found only in the semi-arid areas on both sides of the Rio Grande but not into Big Bend Country and not near the Gulf. We’re fortunate to be in their range, the Tamaulipan thorn-scrub.

are shorter. The tail is distinctly longer than the head and body combined. The head is quite large and the neck is relatively slender. Most other lizards have heads the same diameter as the body and have no discernible neck. The hind legs are nearly twice the size of the front legs and, while I’ve never seen it, when up to speed as it runs, the reticulates may run in biped fashion using only their hind legs like those lizards you may have seen pictured running on the water. The upper side of the lizard is covered with a netted pattern or reticulation. The netted lines are light, near white, and the openings in the net are tan but with some spaces colored black. It’s quite decorative.

During mating season the males black collar, which is usually partial and indistinct, is Of the collared lizards, the more complete and his throat reticulate is the largest, reaching becomes yellow. up to 16 inches in length. Most When excited or preparing to

mate he extends a dewlap on the throat which may show a blackish area. They’re carnivores and feed mostly on insects but enjoy a few other critters such as small lizards, snakes and mice. Since they can leap 18 inches high, butterflies can be a meal. Much of their time is spent basking on rocks anticipating a sight of the next meal. They’re ground lizards and seldom climb trees and then only for a couple of feet. If disturbed they quickly scamper for cover under a bush. Fortunately, I’ve discovered that, once under cover, they stop and, if you’re cautious, you can slowly approach them to get a close look. Reticulate collared lizards are one of the real treasures of the Valley and I wish you the joy of seeing one.
