Ven a Mi

Roma ISD, United Way Continue Partnership to Offer Free Income Tax Assistance for Roma Community Roma ISD is partnering with the United Way of South Texas to make free income tax assistance available to Romaarea community members. Any tax payer in the Starr County area who makes less than $54,000 can take advantage of the free service, which will be offered from 4 to 6 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at Roma High School’s Building A, Room 16 located at 2021 North U.S. Highway 83 in Roma, Texas now through April 6. The site will not be open during the week of March 13, 2017, the week of Spring Break. For more information contact Abigail Ortega at 956-849-1333. “This is the 6th year that we have run the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program for the

Roma area and because of all the support we have received from The United Way of South Texas, we have been extremely successful with the program,” said Abigail Ortega, who is a business education instructor at Roma High and helps run the program. “Every year, approximately five to 10 students volunteer their time to train and offer free tax preparation assistance to our community. The students are a little afraid of the challenge at first, but quickly learn that they are very capable and are really helping to save our community members a lot of time and money through the service so they are very happy to provide this public service.” Last year, Roma High’s VITA

Program helped more than 160 tax payers complete and file their tax returns, which resulted in more than $430,000 in refunds that came back to the Roma and Starr County community. “I’m so proud of these students because they don’t realize how much stress they save our community members with just these small gestures,” explained Ortega. “And sometimes they are inspired to go into a career in accounting through this VITA Program so I think its a great opportunity for us to help, but also to give our students real life chances to see what they can do with their skills for the future. Its a real win-win for everyone involved. We hope to reach more than 180 to 200 folks this year so please come out and visit us!”

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) announced that 21 fugitives sought through the Texas 10 Most Wanted Program – including 14 convicted sex offenders – were arrested in 2016 by DPS and other agencies. In addition, $42,500 in rewards was paid for anonymous tips that resulted in arrests last year. “The Texas 10 Most Wanted program successfully incorporates two powerful resources – law enforcement and the public – to help secure the arrests of fugitives and sexual predators who disregard the rule of law and endanger the public,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “Our state is a safer place because of the outstanding work of local, state and federal law enforcement and the vigilant tipsters who work together to get criminals off the street.” Of the 21 total apprehensions, 10 arrests were the result of tip information provided by anonymous tipsters; six fugitives were located outside of Texas and

extradited either from other states or Mexico. In addition, eight of the fugitives apprehended were gang members. “Texans deserve to feel safe in their communities, and the Texas 10 Most Wanted program along with Texas Crime Stoppers have provided a crucial tool that empowers citizens to help solve crimes and ensure justice is served,” said Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who declared January as Crime Stoppers Month in Texas. “We are grateful for the tremendous efforts made by law enforcement organizations and private citizens to combat crime and protect the great state of Texas.” Texas Crime Stoppers, which is funded by the Governor’s Criminal Justice Division, offers cash rewards to any person who provides information that leads to the arrest of one of the Texas 10 Most Wanted fugitives or sex offenders. To be eligible for the cash

rewards, tipsters must provide information to authorities using one of the five following methods: -Call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477). -Text the letters “DPS” – followed by your tip – to 274637 (CRIMES) from your cell phone. -Submit a web tip through the DPS website by selecting the fugitive you have information about, and then clicking on the link under their picture. -Submit a Facebook tip at h t t p : / / w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / texas10mostwanted by clicking the “SUBMIT A TIP” link (under the “About” section). -Submit a tip through the DPS Mobile App. The app is currently available for iPhone users on the Apple App Store and for Android users on Google Play. All tips are anonymous – regardless of how they are submitted, and tipsters will be provided a tip number instead of using a name.

Ac2E Middle School Held Its 2nd Annual Toy Drive

Ac2E Middle School held its 2nd Annual Toy Drive to benefit children of our community. This activity is also a learning activity, teachers take the time to talk to students and remind them that not all children are fortunate to have essentials and much less a toy. Faculty and staff gathered in a team-building activity called “Operation Gift Wrap 2016”. Gifts were wrapped and ready for distribution. Special thanks to all of the students, parents, and staff members who donated gifts and made this event a great success!

Alex Sarabia, Guest Speaker for Starr County High School Gear Up Seniors

On January 11, Alex Sarabia, STC Psychological Science Instructor, served as Guest Speaker at STC College Connection Experience Event at Starr County Campus. Mr. Alex Sarabia was introduced to deliver his 30 minute motivational/ inspirational talk to the students, about 50 seniors from Roma, Rio Grande City, and Grulla High Schools who are part of the Gear Up Program. Mr. Sarabia elaborated on the importance of using college resources (tutoring advising, counseling, applying for scholarships, attending workshops), the benefits of getting involved in student organizations and community service, and provided other practical advice: time and stress management, self-efficacy—believing in yourself, optimism, learning from failure, the importance of giving back through volunteerism and community service, and how gratitude can improve one’s life. He showed two video clips along with his talk to help get his point across, “Famous Failures” and “No Arms, No Legs, No Worries.” Mr. Sarabia was part of the Gear Up himself when he graduated from Roma High School as Valedictorian back in 2006.
