Our school board members serve because they care deeply about the success and well being of the youth of our community. The students did a tremendous job in all facets showcasing their talents, especially our Roma High School Art Club students who painted portraits of the school board members on old Roma High School roof tiles. The roof tiles were a remembrance of the old roof that the board members voted to replace with a new roof. I’m able to go to Rice University in Houston, Texas. It is the only school in Texas ranked in the top 20 in the U.S.” Campos is referring to the QuestBridge National College Match, a national program that pairs high-achieving, low-income high school seniors with full scholarships to the nation’s top colleges. This year, QuestBridge had a record 14,491 applications, including Campos’, from which only 767 students were selected as 2016 College Match Scholarship Recipients! As part of his scholarship, Campos will receive his full tuition and room and board at Rice University valued at more than $60,000 per year! “I’m very excited because Rice is one of the best schools in Texas and the nation, and not everyone gets this kind of opportunity,” he said. “Although I haven’t been able to visit the campus yet, I have seen a lot of pictures and I know it’s very nice – really beautiful. I’m very excited about this.” “I want to study pre-medicine, specifically microbiology. I also applied for the Medical Scholars Program with the hopes of being pre-admitted to Baylor’s Medical School, which is right on the Rice University Campus,” Campos explained. “I would like to be an anesthesiologist and come back to practice in the Valley one day.” Campos was honored by the Roma ISD School Board for his hard work to earn the scholarship and setting the bar high for the rest of his peers at Roma High School as the school year progresses. “I’d really like to thank all my teachers here at Roma High School for all their help. This is a really good school,” said Campos. “And for my fellow students I will add that there are always opportunities out there and if you try hard enough you can get anywhere you want to go.” For more information about the QuestBridge National College Match Program visit https://www. questbridge.org/.

R o m a H i g h School C l a s s of 2017 Senior Robert Horacio Campos has never actually seen Rice University in Houston, Texas, but he knows it’s beautiful and he know that it is the key to his future. “Last year I found a pamphlet for a junior scholarship program in Mr. Joseph Cloward’s class and the deadline was in two days, but I still applied and they encouraged me to apply again this year. There were 30 essays due and I worked at it, and I got it done and submitted. And I just got notified that I accepted,” said Campos with a big smile. “With this scholarship

Grulla Elementary Held Third Six Weeks Awards Assemblies

Horny toads aren’t toads Why are horny toads called toads? Apparently because they have a resemblance to a toad by being of similar size, squat, wide bodied, rough textured, and having a blunt snout. Of course, they’re actually lizards having typical reptilian, dry, scaly skin and not the moist skin of amphibians. And, of course, they also have a tail.

Grulla Elementary held the Third Six Weeks Awards Assemblies. Students had the opportunity to earn at least one of the following: Principal’s Award, Most Improved, Superior Honor Roll, Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance and Accelerated Reader for the 3rd Six Weeks of the current academic year. Great job to all that received a recognition and thanks to all the parents and relatives that attended the assembly.

There are about 14 species of horned lizard living in our southern states. The Texas horned lizard is one of the largest and is, unfortunately, declining in numbers due to habitat lose and reduced availability of their favorite food: harvester ants. Harvester ants are fairly good

size ants and their nests have entrances surrounded by bare dirt several feet in diameter, cleared by the ants. Radiating out from there are distinct trails which they follow when foraging for food. While the lizards diet is about 70% harvester ants, they also consume some beetles, termites and grasshoppers. Competition from the recent arrival of fire ants has reduced the number of harvester ant colonies for the lizards to feed on and, unfortunately, people spreading poison to kill fire ants also kills harvester ants. It’s a double whammy for horned lizards. Horned lizards are about 4 to 5 inches in length and colored in a variety of creams, tans and browns. While not foraging for food, they bask in the sun. They need lots of sunlight to produce vitamin D or they become vitamin deficient.

The “horns” along a horned lizard’s sides are modified scales but those on the head are true horns with a bony base. Just as snakes do, horny lizards need to shed their skin as they grow. Lizard skin however comes off in patches not whole as a snake skin does. Protection f r o m predators c o m e s f r o m their camouflaged bodies and their ability to puff-up causing the horns to protrude. They’re also protected in another most remarkable way. When threatened they typically scamper away and pause, squatting to the ground. However, if the threat is imminent, they increase their blood pressure, rupture blood vessels in the eye and can actually aim and squirt a stream of unsavory blood up to five feet. It’s a novel defense and enough to repulse dogs, coyotes and wolves. For a night’s slumber, they bury themselves in the sand. Because of their decline, they’re now a State protected species. It’s illegal to capture or possess one. Horned lizards are docile, fascinating critters and need our help. Be very, very careful about the spreading of any ant poison! Never use poison on or near harvester ants.

Roma ISD Holds District UIL Elementary Meet

Congratulations to all the Roma ISD students who competed in Oral and Written Competitions during Roma ISD’s Elementary School Meet! Hundreds of students looked amazing and were so well-prepared for their sections. They were all very impressive. A big salute to the students on their preparation for the events, as well as their coaches and families for the support they provided to their students. Also another big thanks to R.T. Barrera Elementary School for hosting the event. The staff at the school went out of their way to make the entire district feel at home and ensure the students from across the Gladiator Nation were welcomed and at ease for their competitions. It was truly an excellent showing of spirit, teamwork and pride by all participants!

Texas Prepaid Tuition Program Enrollment Deadline Approaches Texas families can lock in the cost of undergraduate tuition at Texas public colleges and universities by enrolling their children in the taxadvantaged Texas Tuition Promise Fund® prior to the close of the current enrollment period, which ends Feb. 28. The Texas Tuition Promise Fund, the state’s prepaid college tuition program, allows participants to prepay undergraduate tuition and school-wide required fees for a four-year degree, two years of community college or just a few semesters at Texas public colleges and universities by purchasing tuition units. “I’m encouraging Texas families and individuals to remember the upcoming deadline to prepay and lock in today’s rates for all or some future tuition at any two- or four-year Texas public college or university,” Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar said.

Enrollment in the program at 2016-17 prices closes the last day in February. This deadline extends to July 31 for children younger than 1. The next annual enrollment period begins Sept. 1, with new

contract prices based on Texas public college costs for the 201718 academic year. Complete plan information and more at TuitionPromise.org, or call 1-800445-GRAD (4723), Option 5.

February the 11 is Texas 2-11 Day, in recognition of the free, user-friendly phone and online system that serves 90% of America’s population. 2-1-1 Texas serves as the number to call for information about community resources. It links over 16 million people a year to critical health and human services provided by nonprofit organizations and government agencies in their own community. Across the state, 2-1-1 Centers (Area Information Centers) have been established to collect and maintain a database of local resource information. Each center responds to calls from people seeking information. Each center continues to expand its database of government agencies, food pantries, career services, afterschool programs, counseling services, child care and many other nonprofit resources in each of these counties. The Community Council of the Rio Grande Valley is the designated Area Information and Referral Center (AIC) for the four counties (Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Willacy) of the Rio Grande Valley; by the Texas Information and Referral Network (TIRN) under the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. Serving the community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In 1996, with a Venture Grant from the United Way of South Texas, the Community Council was incorporated and as such published its first edition of the Directory of Health & Human Services also known as the “Blue Book.” The Community Council RGV was designed as the Area Information & Referral Center (AIC) in January 2001 and became an official “2-1-1 Center” in November of 2002; it was one of the first centers in the State of Texas to implement the 3 digit code 2-1-1.

Starr County Ag Science Teachers to Lead Starr County Fair Parade Agriculture Science teachers at all four Starr County High Schools will lead the Starr County Fair Parade as Parade Marshals on Saturday, January 18. The parade will proceed East on Main Street in Rio Grande City at 11:00 a.m. with lineup on South Britton Ave. and Water St. at 9:00 a.m. Being honored as 2017 Parade Marshals are dedicated Ag teachers Heraldo Gonzalez, Gilberto Perez III, and Joey Ramon from Roma High School, Randy Lara Martin from Rio Grande City High School, Sixto Flores III of RGCCISD Grulla High School, and Adam Garza of San Isidro High School. Heraldo Gonzalez, who has lived in Roma all his life, has been married to his high school sweetheart, Yvonne, for 33 years. They have three children, JoAnn, the late Heraldo, Jr., and Carlos. He has taught Animal Science, Plant Science, Horticulture, and Agriculture Mechanics in the Roma FFA Program. A graduate of Texas A&I University in Kingsville with a major in Agriculture Education, he has taught in Roma for 36 years. Lalo would like to thank his lovely wife and his family for all the support they’ve shown him throughout his career, particularly the late hours after school and long weekends. “My family has always been my biggest fan. What means the most to me is that they do more than tell me I’m great at what I do.” He has been helping with the Fair for the past 36 years, as one of the Roma FFA instructors. “In those years, our students have had countless Grand and Reserve Champions in all categories,” he stated, adding that as a high school student with Roma FFA, he showed breeding cattle and farm shop projects. He is proud that all of his children also participated with the Starr County Fair during their high school years at Roma. They were blessed with receiving many Grand Champion Awards, as well as Starr County Fair scholarships. The top scholarship, the Heraldo Gonzalez, Jr. Memorial, was named in memory of one of his sons. Mr. Gonzalez has served as a director for the Starr county Fair Association for the past ten years. He stated, “I am truly honored for being selected as one of the Agriculture Science teachers from Starr County to be named as Parade Marshals. I would like to thank all the wonderful people in Starr County who have and continue to support me and our program. Thank you for your confidence.” Gilberto Perez III says, “My involvement with the Starr County Youth Fair began 33 years ago with Roma FFA as a Roma High School student. I enjoyed it so much that it became my career. I studied Agriculture Science Education at Texas Tech University and began teaching in 1991 at Roma High School. Teaching Agriculture Science for over 25 years has been rewarding in many ways.” He continued, “My family has been involved with the Starr County Youth Fair ever since I can remember. My mother, Elda G. Perez, was a Homemaking teacher for thirty-plus years at Roma High School. Her involvement with the Fair was an annual event working with the Baking Division. My involvement began in 1984, my freshman year showing with the Roma FFA.” Gilberto stated, “My wife, Maria Teresa, and I have four daughters who became involved with the fair when they were just four years old. My daughters began with the Peewee Goat Division and then the excitement continued when the girls were at the age to show with the Roma Jr. FFA. I am proud to say that two of my daughters received Grand Champion with the Rabbit Division with the Roma Jr. FFA. My daughters have continued their involvement through high school participating in the Farm Shop, Metal Art, Horticulture, and Art through the Roma FFA. My wife and I are truly grateful for the opportunities the Starr County Fair has to offer. It has provided us with many memorable learning and fun experiences that will forever be part of our family.” Gilberto is a director of the Starr County Fair Association, chairman for the Farm Shop Division and co-chair of the Horticulture Division. He stated, “The Starr County Youth Fair continues to recognize youth and to create an environment for students to become responsible leaders at a very young age. It is gratifying to be part of this association,” concluding, “I feel honored and grateful to all of the directors of the Starr County Fair Association for the recognition of Parade Marshal to the Agriculture Science teachers of Starr County.” Joey Ramon is in his second year as an Agriculture Science teacher at Roma High School, after teaching science for a year and serving as an Ag teacher for two years at Benavides ISD, where he was named Teacher of the Year. He has helped out with the Starr County Fair on and off since graduating from Roma High School. He recalls, “I was an FFA member and officer during my high PARADE MARSHALS, section II, page 3

STARRC OUNTY TOWNC RIER, FEBRUARY15,2017,S ECTIONI I,P AGE3

PARADE MARSHALS Continued from section II, page 1 school years. I showed market hogs, goats and farm shop projects. I received Reserve Champion Hog (1991) and Reserve Champion Farm Shop (1995).” He added, “My wife, Daisy Ramon, and son, Kaylon Ramon, have been very supportive. Daisy volunteered with the rabbit and duck scramble last year, and Kaylon has various projects in the fair including a market lamb, cake, educational poster and a horticulture project.” Kaylon, a fourth grade student at Emma Vera Elementary, won the logo and theme contest for the 2017 Starr County Fair with his entry, “Country Pride and Family Time.” Ramon serves as an advisory board member of the Starr County Fair Association, as well as a member of the Livestock Committee. He stated, “It’s an honor being selected as parade marshal along with the other Ag Science Teachers from the county.” Randy Lara Martin has been teaching for twelve years and has been the Agriculture Science teacher for eleven of those years, all at Rio Grande City High School, her alma mater. She states, “I have been involved in the Starr County Youth Fair since the age of 8. I started showing cattle at a very young age and instantly fell in love with the atmosphere of the livestock show. As I grew older, I told myself that I would like to help others experience the excitement of raising a project and exhibiting it for the community to see. Ever since then I have tried to help in any way that I can with the Starr County Youth Fair and other livestock shows and agriculture competitions throughout the state.” She adds, “I believe that my involvement at a very young age taught me discipline, responsibility, and determination. This opportunity has opened many doors for me and has given me knowledge that I would otherwise not have been able to attain. I

strive to pass on any information to help my students and try to expose my FFA members to as much real world experience as possible.” A graduate of Texas A&M University Kingsville with an Agriculture Science degree and a Masters in Ag Science, Randy is currently serving on the Advisory Committee for the Starr County Fair Association Board. She is a voting member of the Livestock Committee, Breeding Cattle Chairman for the Starr County Youth Fair, Assistant Superintendent in charge of Breeding Cattle for the Rio Grande Valley District, and Starr County Validation Committee Co-Chair. Mrs. Martin stated, “I would like to thank my family for supporting me unconditionally--my parents, Greg and Janie Lara, my husband, Ed Martin, my brother, Bobby Lara, my sister, Cody Lara, and our newest addition to the family, Skyler Kole Martin,” adding, “I would humbly like to thank the Starr County Fair for selecting the other Agriculture Science teachers and myself as the 2017 parade marshals. I pride myself in striving to better not only myself but my students’ lives, as well. For me, satisfaction comes when a student lets me know that I have impacted their lives and made a difference.” Sixto Flores III is the Agriculture Science teacher at RGCCISD Grulla High School, where he chartered Grulla FFA in 2013. He is currently serving on the Starr County Fair Association board, the Livestock Committee, and is cochair of the Horticulture Division. He is also a founding member of the Working on Wellness Committee with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension office. He stated, “There are several people in my life that have helped me become the man I am today. I would like to thank my parents, Sixto and Dolly Flores, for teaching me the values and principles I live by. The life lessons they taught me in and out of the show area have helped shape the man I am today.

children who participate in the ‘peewee’ competition.” Flores adds, “I am elated to have been selected as one of the 2017 Parade Marshals for the Starr County Youth Fair. This is an honor I am able to share with my fellow Ag Science Teachers and feel extremely humbled. Many people will never fully comprehend what goes into this specific profession. There are long hours of work, financial burdens that come with livestock, and the responsibility of teaching students to take pride in themselves, their chapter, and their projects can sometimes be difficult. I am certain, though, that there is nowhere else I’d rather be. My profession is fulfilling, and I am grateful for the life experiences that have prepared me for it.” He concluded, “To all the Ag teachers, congratulations! To the RGCCISD administration, teachers, and staff, thank you for your service and what you do for our community. Also, to the 4-H and FFA leaders and supportive parents who continue to lead and inspire….thank you for making a difference.” Adam Garza is in his first year as agriculture science teacher at San Isidro ISD, filling the big boots of their beloved “Mr. H.” Adam stated, “Since this is my first year being involved with Starr County, I would like to extend thanks to Luis and Celinda Alvarado and Adan and Melinda Marquez for helping me in our agricultural program here at San Isidro ISD, my new school family, and the Starr County Fair Association.” He feels a strong connection to the Starr County Fair, stating, “My aunt and Godmother Norma Linda Vega was a participant in 1979, 80 and 81 and was Top Winner with her cheesecake all three years. She also won Grand Champion for her Chocolate Chip Cookies in 1978.” In high school, Adam was an active Mission FFA and Town & Country 4-H member in Hidalgo County. He stated, “My projects

were a market lamb, steers, and breeding heifers and bulls. I introduced TCYS to San Isidro FFA students this year, and I know my students will familiarize themselves with the citrus industry and that youth show in the years to come. However, since this is my first year working with Starr County I have not been involved with the Fair in the past. I look forward to continue my work with the Fair in the future.” Adam stated, “I have been involved with the Advisory Board and Livestock Committee for the Starr County Fair Association only since August 2016, but it has been very enlightening, and I have learned so much. As an Agriculture Science Teacher, I work hard to educate my students in agriculture literacy. I look forward to continue my work with the youth and the Fair in the future. I am very

They instilled a strong work ethic, a love for the Lord, family, and a firm and reassuring hand that has consistently guided me and my life choices. It is because of them that I took such pride in participating in the Starr County Youth Fair, rodeo arena, and working livestock. These pillars have been the foundation of who I am today.” He added, “I would like to thank my beautiful wife Emily G. Flores. She is an inspiration and the driving force for me to strive to be a better all-around individual. Her unconditional love and support is unwavering. As a father now, I am committed to living by example and instilling in my children the values that were bestowed upon me. I am so thankful for my two beautiful children, Sixto and Savannah, who always remind me to see the world through their eyes and celebrate every milestone in my life. My sisters, Annette and Melissa, thanks for keeping me grounded when I need to be and on my toes when it was necessary. Your love and daily support continue to remind me of how lucky I am to have you both in my life.” Sixto has been a participant in the Starr County Youth Fair for over thirty years. He first began participating in the Southdown lamb division while in 4-H. He recalls, “As a family, we became very invested in the program. My father worked along with us to prepare our projects, and we learned the meaning of dedication through them. Growing up, I won several championships in the lamb and steer division and as a senior with Rio Grande City FFA, I won in the livestock judging division, perhaps a prelude to my career as an Ag teacher. Not only was I learning the meaning of dedication, but financially these winnings would later help me receive my degree in Ag Science from Texas A&M University Kingsville. Now as a father I’ve returned to the show arena as the Grulla FFA Ag Science teacher and with my
