Do not fill your hearts with pain and sorrow, but instead remember me in every tomorrow. Remember the joy, the laughter, the smiles, I’ve only gone to rest a little while. Although my leaving causes pain and grief, my going has given me relief. So dry your eyes and remember me, just the way I used to be. I will forever look on with a smile. Understand in your hearts, I’ve only gone to rest a little while. As long as I have the love of each of you, I can live my life in the hearts of all of you.

We Put our Hearts into It

Did you know? While high school seniors on the cusp of graduating and moving on to college give ample thought to their college majors, many are likely to change majors at least once after enrolling in a college or university.

LEGAL NOTICE Application has been made with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for a WINE AND BEER RETAILER’S PERMIT by: AMALIA RIVERA dba AJ’S DRIVE THRU, LLC to be located at 2001 EMBASSY RD., RIO GRANDE CITY, STARR COUNTY, TEXAS.

According to the University of La Verne, between 50 and 70 percent of college students change majors at least once, and many of them will change their majors three times before they graduate. The University also reports that 50 percent of college graduates pursue careers that are not related to their majors. Career and personality assessments can help students determine which subjects they may want to study upon enrolling in a college or university. Such assessments can help students discover their interests, and then students can work with advisors and career counselors at their colleges or universities to find majors that align with those interests.

Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural.

Volunteers at Escobares Garden A Volunteer is a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task of their own free will comments Yolanda Morado, CEA-FCS. The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service carries out their programs through the dedicated efforts of volunteers. Through their service they make a tremendous impact on the community. They feel connected to their community and through giving of their time they enrich their lives and make Starr County a better place. “Helping” makes a real difference to the lives of people, animals, and organizations. Volunteering brings about several benefits to those who are being helped. But surprisingly the greatest benefits of volunteering reduces stress, you learn, gain professional experiences, bring great people together, promotes personal growth and self-esteem, strengthens your community and you are making a difference. Volunteer students from South Texas College under the direction of Dr. Ruben Garces and AgriLife student worker Robert J. Alaniz were busy at improving the landscape of the Escobares Community Garden. Volunteers from Rio Grande City

library study group joined them with Heidi C. Lopez the AgriLife Growing & Nourishing Healthy Communities Extension Program Assistant. Aside from inspiring the

environment these volunteers are learning how to grow their own source of healthy food. Another great benefit of gardening is getting exercise! Gardening is a very valuable health benefit.

If you wish to volunteer at a community garden or attend a gardening class please contact Heidi C. Lopez at the Starr County Extension office 956487-2306.

Census Of Agriculture Countdown Begins For America’s Farmers And Ranchers America’s farmers and ranchers will soon have the opportunity to strongly represent agriculture in their communities and industry by taking part in the 2017 Census of Agriculture. Conducted every five years by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), the census, to be mailed at the end of this year, is a complete count of all U.S. farms, ranches, and those who operate them. “The Census of Agriculture remains the only source of uniform, comprehensive, and impartial agriculture data for every county in the nation,” said NASS Administrator Hubert Hamer. “As such, census results are relied upon heavily by those who serve farmers and rural communities, including federal, state and local governments, agribusinesses, trade associations, extension educators, researchers, and farmers and ranchers themselves.” The Census of Agriculture

highlights land use and ownership, operator characteristics, production practices, income and expenditures, and other topics. The 2012 Census of Agriculture revealed that over three million farmers operated more than two million farms, spanning over 914 million acres. This was a four percent decrease in the number of U.S. farms from the previous census in 2007. However, agriculture sales, income, and expenses increased between 2007 and 2012. This telling information and thousands of other agriculture statistics are a direct result of responses to the Census of Agriculture. “Today, when data are so important, there is strength in numbers,” said Hamer. “For farmers and ranchers, participation in the 2017 Census of Agriculture is their voice, their future, and their opportunity to shape American agriculture – its policies, services and assistance programs – for years to come.” Producers who are new to

farming or did not receive a Census of Agriculture in 2012 still have time to sign up to receive the 2017 Census of Agriculture report form by visiting www.agcensus.usda.gov and clicking on the ‘Make Sure You Are Counted’ button through June. NASS defines a farm as any place from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products were produced and sold, or normally would have been sold, during the census year (2017). For more information about the 2017 Census of Agriculture and to see how census data are used, visit www.agcensus.usda.gov or call (800) 727-9540.

Op-Ed Submission on Travel Ban by Leo Lopez III, MD

Dear Editor, I work as a medical doctor and film-maker. I’m driven by powerful stories, rudimentary emotion, and fascinated by the human condition. In December of 2014, I spent time in the Middle East examining social forces through a lens. Upon landing, my team and I were fearful. Our knowledge of Arab culture was based in the consumption of Western media. For a lifetime, I’ve listened to narratives making “terrorist” or “extremist” or “fundamentalist” inherent to the Arab condition. I came to know a Palestinian man named Zoughbi who told me, “We [Arabs] are human beings.” It wasn’t until I engaged “the other”, that I realized my preconceived ideas and fears were an illusion. Primarily, I was in the West Bank to direct a documentary film covering issues of human security, peace, conflict resolution, and perception; secondarily, to soothe my ignorance and curiosity. On the third day of production, we spent time in the AIDA refugee camp near Bethlehem. The camp is home to approximately 3,100

refugees. The people of the camp face difficult challenges with military clashes, being publicly affronted, securing employment and struggling with over-crowded living conditions. There I met a man whom suffers the condition of refugee, and has for most of his life. We walked through the camp, noting the towering living structures with graffiti wrapped along the walls. As we crept through a narrow alley, a security barrier nearly 10 meters in height came into view. “That wall killed many people”, he said. He welcomed me into his home and served fresh tea, hot coffee, and crackers. He spoke to me about hope, his life’s triumphs, and pitfalls. His children played a game of darts, and laughed joyfully around our conversation. He explained that despite these sordid experiences, he teaches optimism to his children. Like many of us, he wants to provide a solemn home for his children to flourish, with a sound education, and access to health care. He discussed how unnatural militarized borders, walls, and check points are. His children live in constant fear. He represses lamenting on daily jeremiads, and focuses instead on the future. His children address him with deference as he assures them that the condition of a refugee is temporary. They hope to return

home in the near future. When my team and I were strangers in a foreign land, an Arab refugee showed me what humanity looks like. President Trump’s Executive Action regarding the ban on refugees is as equally deplorable as it is ignorant. Instead of having the courage to stand with our most vulnerable brothers and sisters around the world, we’ve embraced a position of fear. I feel shame and embarrassment over this policy. I encourage the members of our community to oppose this xenophobic, inhumane policy which engenders social suffering.

Throat Cancer Increasing; Doctors Urge Vaccination to Prevent It Doctors are diagnosing more throat cancers caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV also causes other cancers, such as cervical, but throat cancer is quickly becoming the most common. The good news: the HPV vaccination, if people receive it early enough, can prevent most of these cancers, which are found in the tonsils and base of the tongue. Four percent of U.S. adults aged 18 to 69 have a type of HPV that puts them at high risk for throat, or oropharyngeal, cancers, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly 16,000 oropharyngeal cancers are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, according to the CDC. The cancer’s prevalence has pushed it into the spotlight this month, which has been designated Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month. During April, Texas physicians urge parents to vaccinate their children against HPV to prevent cancer later in life. “The vaccine is nearly 100 percent effective if it’s given before someone is exposed to HPV,” said Texas Medical Association member Erich Sturgis, MD, a head and neck surgeon at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. “Taking this preventive action during adolescence can mean better health down the road.” Physicians and other health experts recommend the HPV vaccination for preteen boys and girls, aged 11 and 12 years, but youths can receive it as early as age 9. A second dose of HPV vaccine should be given six to 12 months after the first dose. HPV is the most common infection in the nation spread through intimate skin-to-skin or sexual contact. Almost all — eight in 10 — sexually active people will have the virus sometime in their lives. HPV infections can cause healthy cells to become abnormal. Typically, the body can clear the infection. But when it can’t, the infection can cause cells to become cancerous years later. Dr. Sturgis says the HPV vaccination is important for both boys and girls, but stresses its importance for boys. Doctors can diagnose cervical cancer early through screening (the Pap test), he said, but currently no screening is available for throat cancers, so they usually are advanced when diagnosed. And while HPV-related throat cancers are expected to surpass cervical cancer by 2020, Dr. Sturgis said experts say that may occur sooner. Men are three to five times as likely to get throat cancer as women, with most cases occurring in white, middle-aged males. Smoking and alcohol use previously caused most oropharyngeal cancers, but HPV now accounts for at least 70 percent of these cancers. “Unfortunately, the generation of people getting HPV-related throat cancers didn’t have the benefit of vaccination,” said Dr. Sturgis. “Now we have the opportunity to protect the next generation from a very devastating disease.” Older teens and young adults who weren’t vaccinated in adolescence also can benefit from HPV vaccination. Both males and females can get the shots until age 26. For those over age 15, however, the CDC recommends three shots for full protection. People should ask their physician about how many doses are needed and when. TMA has published an infographic and fact sheet about the importance of HPV vaccination, both in English and Spanish.

Here’s a butterfly that doesn’t seem to mind the cold I’ve been reminded during the past few weeks, and observed over the years, that red admiral butterflies can be seen all year, even during cold weather. Some nights were in the low 40s and yet I’ve enjoyed seeing several newly emerged red admirals here in the winter and early spring. I’ve explained in earlier articles about the life cycle of butterflies, that is, egg larva, pupa, adult. The cycle is called complete metamorphosis. For the adult red admiral to be here in the cold months, it must emerge from its pupa during some very cold weather. The pupa, called a chrysalis in butterflies, is formed when the caterpillar is full grown which, for adults flying now, must have occurred in the fall.

Why the adult should emerge when its cold and there are relatively few nectar plants in bloom is surprising and puzzling to me. I should also mention, however, that I’m amazed that there are at least some wild flowers in bloom here in the Valley all year. The caterpillars (larvae) eat leaves of nettle. While I’ve observed a few species of butterflies recently, the largest flights of species here emerge in the fall, especially October, but then spend winter in the chrysalis form and emerge when warmth comes and spring bloom begins. So, how do you recognize the red admiral which can be seen even during winter weather? They’re quite distinctive

and actually one of our most attractive butterflies. They’re medium size and basically dark in color. However on the upper side of both the fore and hind wings there is a broad band of bright red-orange. The tips of the forewings are black with several white dots On the underside are mixtures of brown, pale buff, and blue forming intricate patterns. On the forewing tip you may glimpse touches of red, white and blue. However, with wings fully closed they’re hidden. Adult males sometimes engage in “hilltopping.” In late afternoon, they establish a territory, and watch for females. From a perch, they dart out in pugnacious fashion at anything which invades their territory, even humans. After you’ve seen these delightful creatures a few times, they’ll become favorites. Found throughout the U. S., here is the Valley we can enjoy them all year long.
