When tomorrow starts without me and I’m not here to see; If the sun should rise and ind your eyes illed with tears for me. I wish so much you wouldn’t cry the way you did today; while thinking of the many things we didn’t get to say. I know how much you love me, as much as I love you; and each time you think of me, I know you’ll miss me too. When Tomorrow starts without me, don’t think we’re apart, for every time you think of me, I’m right there in your heart.

Alcohol Awareness Month is a national public health awareness campaign sponsored by the National Council for Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD), which takes place every April. Alcohol Awareness Month aims to increase awareness and understanding of the causes and treatment for one of our nation’s top public health problems: alcohol use disorder. This year’s theme is “Connecting the Dots: Opportunity for Recovery.” This year’s efforts are directed towards young individuals who can be easily influenced by alcohol and drugs if not informed. As a parent the best thing you can do for your child is interfere. Studies show 50% of children are less likely to use alcohol and drugs that have conversations with parents about the risks, than those who do not. For tips on how to talk to your child about alcohol, please visit Parent & Caregiver Resources | SAMHSA . Message from the Starr County Community Coalition

WHEN THEY GO LOW, YOU ALWAYS GO HIGH.

To hear the interview that Hernandez gave today, failing to smile at his comments, was impossible. To put so many lies and fantasies together in a 10 minute interview was probably the best and biggest achievement he has had in his career. It was particularly painful to hear him say they were

a couple of ladies in the delivery room waiting for anesthesia services, while he was very nonchalant giving political interviews while getting paid to be working and not playing politics. I will answer each one of your attacks in due time Dr Hernandez. Make no mistake. Meantime, our community

knows the truth. You do not fabricate a record from one day to another and hope it holds truth. You build it, every day, with work and dedication, the same way I did it, for the last 10 years. Unfortunately for you, this last 10 years, you were no where to be found.

Physicians Alarmed by Sharp Spike in Accidental Overdose Deaths Fueled by Illegal Drugs A surge in accidental opioid overdose deaths in Texas is showing no signs of slowing down, and Texas physicians warn the rise in illegally produced drugs laced with fentanyl are to blame. They also say increasing the availability

of life-saving, overdose-reversing drugs like naloxone, as well as addiction treatment programs, can help. “While any drug abuse is tragic, fentanyl overdoses and the addictions that precede them

are culling Texans at an awful, persistent pace,” said Daniel Walk, MD, a member of the Texas Medical Association’s Committee on Emergency Medical Services and Trauma. Nearly 5,000 Texans have died

because of drug overdoses, an increase of 18% from a year ago, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids contribute to this death toll, killing 1,634 Texans, an 82% increase over one year. “It’s heartbreaking to see that statistic play out in front of me; having to tell someone’s parents their daughter or son won’t ever come home,” said Dr. Walk, an emergency physician who has treated overdose patients. Fentanyl is used to treat severe pain and for advanced-stage cancer. But when used in an unregulated setting, even as little as two milligrams can be lethal, said Max Eckmann, MD, president of the Texas Pain Society (TPS). Fentanyl is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine – as little as two milligrams, or less, is deadly. “To put it in perspective, two

milligrams of fentanyl could fit on the tip of a pen,” said Dr. Eckmann. “Drugs today are more powerful and more deadly than ever before,” with some counterfeit pills containing as much as five milligrams of fentanyl. Physicians say the sharp spike in drug overdose deaths comes despite heavy regulation of opioid prescriptions, which have decreased in Texas and across the country for over a decade. “We [physicians] try to avoid prescribing opioids for pain relief if possible. If we are going to reach for opioids, we are mindful of the dosing amount and duration of treatment,” said Dr. Eckmann. The physicians say one measure that can save lives and help control the opioid overdose epidemic is making naloxone – a medication that reverses an overdose – more accessible. It is available as an emergency nasal spray or injection. “Making naloxone available for

patients as a safety backup is a big thing, not just for themselves but for their family members,” said Dr. Eckmann. Dr. Walk said everyone should have access to naloxone affordably and through a local pharmacy, on demand and without need for a prescription. It could help families when loved ones “fall off the wagon” and begin to use drugs again. Boosting investment in and awareness of treatment programs and facilities to help those suffering from addiction is another step the entire community – physicians, health insurers, government, and law enforcement – can all take to mitigate the problem, the physicians said. “Raising awareness and improving the availability to lifesaving treatment is more important than ever. One opioid overdose death is one too many,” said Dr. Eckmann.

Application has been made with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for a RETAILER’S OFFPREMISE LICENSE (BF) by MARIA I. ESCOBAR dba GREEN ACRES FRUIT MARKET AND GROCERIES, to be located at 5014 ESCOBARES HWY 83, ROMA, STARR COUNTY, TEXAS.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month The American Automobile Association’s (AAA) distracted driving awareness campaign titled Don’t Drive Intoxicated, Don’t Drive Intexticated is a reminder that distracted can be as dangerous as driving drunk. In a study done by AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety researchers found that even using a hands-free system or texting when you are stopped at a light can produce a ‘hangover’ effect where your mind stays distracted for up to 27 seconds

after using smart phones or even voice to text systems in vehicles. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month: A time to raise awareness of the dangers associated with distracted driving. Fortunately, when we look at the cars surrounding us each day in traffic, we do not see many drunk drivers. Yet, looking around and seeing a driver staring at their cell phone is all too common. Distracted driving is much more pervasive than drunk driving. Since 1980 when Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) was founded, the organization has raised awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. Because of the efforts of MADD, it is no longer socially acceptable to drink and drive and fatalities from drunk driving have decreased significantly. However, the same standard does not yet apply to distracted driving. The message from this campaign seeks to equate the risk

of distracted driving with drunk driving and make it no longer considered acceptable behavior to drive while being distracted by cell phones and other mobile devices. Like drunk driving, distracted driving slows the driver’s reaction time. Distracted driving additionally takes the driver’s eyes off the road for as much 4-5 seconds while they read or send a text message. At 55 miles per hour, this would be the equivalent of driving the length of a football field with a blindfold on. According to the Texas Department of Transportation in 2020 Texas roadways saw nearly 1-in-5 crashes caused by a distracted driver in which 367 people died and 2,205 were seriously injured. While teens and young drivers are more likely to be driving distracted, many of these drivers do not see texting as a risk. A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration survey found 20% of drivers ages 18-20 said texting

does not affect their driving, and nearly 30% of drivers ages 21-34 said texting has no impact. Parents and caregivers need to be good role models and not have their children witness them drive distracted, just as they would not want to have their children see them driving impaired. Children are paying attention and parents have more influence over their teens than they may think. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Family and Community Health Educator Neida Martinez in Starr County reminds drivers to put away their cell phones and wait until they arrive at their destination to use their phone. The goal of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month is to reduce distracted driving all year long. Although cell phone use is the most easily recognized distraction, all in-vehicle distractions are unsafe and can cause crashes or fatalities. Keep your eyes on the road and arrive alive!
