$3,500 Awarded in ORU Donations Spare change adds up and it just made a real difference in Medina County, with $3,500 being donated through Medina Electric’s Operation Round Up program. Clifford and Joann Baumann, of Hondo, received $1,500 from Medina Electric’s Operation Round Up program after their home burned downed at the end of January. This donation was used to help replace furniture, appliances and new clothing. $2,000 was also donated to help Hunter Erwin’s family with medical expenses. Fourteen-yearold Hunter was diagnosed with Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome in 2015. The donation will help the Erwin family with medical expenses as they travel to Houston for regular visits with specialists

at the Texas Children’s Hospital. Applications to receive funds are accepted throughout the year with quarterly deadlines for donations. The next deadline for 2019 is May 3. Applicants do NOT need to be a member of Medina EC to be considered for a donation but must live within the 17 counties served by the cooperative. ORU is funded by the generosity of Medina EC members who opt to have their electric bills rounded up to the next whole dollar, by MEC employees who donate through payroll deduction and by donations from individuals or organizations straight to the program. Protect Yourself Against Tetanus: Bacterial Infection Attacks Muscles Northern pygmy mice are tiny An open wound is a painful occurrence for anyone – but without protection, that cut or burn can bring something more serious: tetanus. “Bacterial spores of tetanus are everywhere in the environment – in the dirt, in the dust, and feces.” said Tyler family physician and Texas Medical Association (TMA) physician leader Li-Yu Mitchell, MD. The spores – Clostridium tetani – can get inside the body through broken skin caused by objects like nails, burns, animal bites, and even a bike accident. “Step on a dirty nail or needle, suffer a burn or crush injury, or simply have a wound that is contaminated with dirt, feces, or spit, and you have a recipe for disaster,” said Dr. Mitchell in a video on the TMA YouTube channel. You can contract tetanus, a bacterial infection commonly known as lockjaw. Tetanus can cause painful spasms in jaw muscles and muscles throughout the body – especially in the stomach area. Patients who contract tetanus also experience muscle stiffness, trouble swallowing, headache, fever, difficulty breathing, and changes in blood pressure and heart rate. According to Dr. Mitchell, symptoms can show up in as early as three days to three weeks. Tetanus brings its fair share of complications too. Patients can experience uncontrolled tightening of the vocal cords, and spasms strong enough in some cases to break bones. Some patients can develop blood clots or pneumonia. These complications can lead to death without medical treatment. Tetanus cases in the United States started to decline in 1900 when physicians spoke out

about better wound care. The introduction of tetanus vaccines in the 1940’s caused the number of cases to plummet, from 600 on average to about 30 today, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). People of all ages can protect themselves from tetanus with a vaccine. The vaccine recommended depends on a person’s age. Young children usually receive the DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis) vaccine or the DT (diphtheria-tetanus) in five advised doses: at 2, 4, and 6 months; between 15 and 18 months; and between 4 and 6 years of age. The CDC recommends preteens age 11 to 12 get a Tdap

(tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) or Td booster (tetanus-diphtheria). Adults should get a booster every 10 years. The CDC reports tetanus cases in the United States today occur in unvaccinated adults, or adults who did not get a booster shot. The vaccine is highly effective, according to Dr. Mitchell. In addition to getting vaccinated, the CDC recommends people wash hands with soap and water frequently, using an alcoholbased hand rub if washing is not possible. Any break in the skin should also be quickly washed and cared for. “We all get cuts and scrapes. It happens. Protect yourself and your family against tetanus,” said Dr. Mitchell.

This is a time I’m writing about a species I’ve never actually observed. However, northern pygmy mice are interesting enough to deserve an article and some of our attention. I do hope to see one someday. They’re one of the tiniest mammals in Texas and nocturnal so it’s not unusual that most people have never observed one. They are in fact the smallest rodent in North America. Their range includes almost all of Texas, except the far northern and western tips. They’re also found in parts of Mexico and the southern tips of Arizona and New Mexico. You’ll probably be able to identify one if you see it. Overall they’re

or hibernates, they’re active, seeking food, all year. They’re also sexually active all year. Females become mature in only 2 months from birth and have been known to have 9 litters, of 3 young each, in less than 6 months! I leave it to you to imagine the potential pygmy mouse population growth rate. However, not to worry. Their life expectancy is at most a year with 6 months more typical in the wild. Predators include snakes and owls for which they’re a major food source. So, pygmy mice are tiny and live short lives but may live to be great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandparents. Isn’t our wildlife fascinating?

about 4 inches in length. The body is just 2 and a half inches with a tail even shorter. Amazingly, they weigh only about a quarter ounce. That’s the weight of a single pat of butter. Their fur is a grizzled reddishbrown, gray and black. Grizzled means a mixture of colored hairs. The over-all effect is quite dark. Their preferred habitat is dense grassland or areas with lots of leaf litter. The nests are constructed of shredded grass and may have a couple of entrances. Beaten trails can be observed leading from the nest under the leaf litter. While they can occasionally be a pest to agriculture, they subsist mostly on weed seeds. Not a species which stores a food supply
