Dios miro tu cansancio y dolor. Mia is a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and her hobbies include shopping, long drives, working, and spending time with family and friends. She enjoys traveling the most and has visited New York, Washington, Philadelphia, Boston, Florida, Ruidoso and Las Vegas. where she received a BA in English. Before she even crossed the stage to receive her diploma, she had already signed a contract with RGCCISD to teach at her alma mater. Catherine was employed with the district for 30 years, as a high school English teacher for 11 years and an elementary school librarian at Alberto and Celia Barrera Elementary-formerly North Grammar Elementary- for 19 years. Although she left the district in June of 2020, Catherine still considers herself an educator at heart. Catherine recently accepted a position as a museum exhibit technician for the City of Rio Grande City’s Kelsey Bass Museum and Event Center. Catherine credits her strong work ethic and desire to keep busy to her late parents. Her father, Catarino Escobar worked all his life as a farmer and rancher, and her mother, Ada Morlen Escobar was a busy stay-at-home mom who worked from sunrise to sunset to care for seven children, her own mother, and her brotherin-law. Although her mother

graduated high school, and her father only received a 3rd grade education, Catherine considers them the smartest people she has ever known, and grudgingly yet successfully obtained a college degree upon their insistence. Catherine and her family are active members of Immaculate Conception Church; she and her husband are also members of their church band 4Christ for the 11:00 AM mass. Her entire family has worked and helped out with various youth events sponsored by their church. Catherine is also a board member for STARR of Hope- a non-profit organization committed to helping domestic abuse victims and their families; further, she is a member of the GFWC-Florence J. Scott Women’s Club which promotes literacy and community service. When she has free time, Catherine enjoys reading the latest Elin Hildebrand or Danielle Steele novel, “boot-scooting” with her husband on date night, and baking for friends and family-just not necessarily in that order.

Graciella is an officer of the Roma Junior Catholic Daughters of the Americas at Our Lady of Refuge Church in Roma where she volunteers in a variety of activities. Graciella is hoping to attend a major university and study audiology. Graciella Ileana Pérez is the granddaughter of Mr. Gilberto Pérez Jr. and Sorority Sister Elda G. Pérez of the Texas Delta Theta Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, a member for over fifty years.

“Keep the dream big, It always comes true in Beta Sigma Phi” Where it all started....... In 1931, during the Great Depression, there was a need for an organization that could bring women together and expose them to a social, cultural and educational climate that was not available in those difficult times. Most important, there was a need for friendship and support from other women. Beta Sigma Phi was created out of this need. It did not take long before Beta Sigma Phis were helping others. Members worked together to raise $22 million in war bonds during World War II. The 1950s brought peace and prosperity to the world, and Beta Sigma Phi membership doubled. This era was filled with grand balls, elegant teas and the growing strength of sisterhood as thousands of women joined Beta Sigma Phi. As the times have changed, so has Beta Sigma Phi.

The 1960s and 1970s found our organization less formal, but the ideals were the same. Now in the 21st Century, our over 165,000 members find the more we grow, the more valuable we become to our sisters and to our communities. The Beta Sigma Phi woman will continue to face challenges and cherish opportunities as she moves into the future. Typical chapters enjoy socials that range from informal gatherings to gala affairs that often include friends and family. Fascinating cultural programs offer insight into subjects that range from the arts to gardening to in-home businesses. Membership in our organization provides opportunities to contribute to your community, develop lifelong friendships, and polish leadership skills. Our members raise more than $3 million for local charities and

donate over 200,000 volunteer hours in an average year. Each chapter determines its own service projects and participation is always voluntary. Chapters have created their own International Funds that donate millions of dollars to health research groups, hunger projects, and other worthwhile causes. Members and their families can receive assistance through our International Loan, Scholarship and Disaster Funds. What Makes Us Unique? Unlike a college sorority, our organization has members of all ages and educational backgrounds. Our sisterhood constantly redefines itself through the diversity and vitality of its members who share their ideas, talents and enthusiasm. That is why we are known around the world as “The Friendship Organization”.

Texas reports first West Nile case of 2022 Public health officials have confirmed the state’s first case of illness caused by West Nile virus in 2022. Dallas County Health and Human Services reported that a resident of Dallas County has been diagnosed with West Nile neuroinvasive disease. West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Most people exposed to the virus don’t get sick, but about 20 percent develop symptoms like headache, fever, muscle and joint aches, nausea and fatigue. In a very small proportion, less than one percent, the virus affects the nervous system, leading to the more

serious West Nile neuroinvasive disease that can cause neck stiffness, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis and even death. The Texas Department of State Health Services urges people to not give mosquitoes a biting chance by following these steps to protect themselves and their families from West Nile and other diseases spread by mosquitoes. WEAR long sleeves and pants. Create a barrier to mosquito bites by covering up. APPLY insect repellent. Use EPA-registered repellent such as those containing DEET,

picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol or 2-undecanone. standing water. REMOVE Emptying out water that accumulates in toys, tires, trash cans, buckets, clogged rain gutters and plant pots will deny mosquitoes a place to lay their eggs and reproduce. People should also keep mosquitoes out of their homes by using air conditioning and making sure window and door screens are in good repair. DSHS urges people with West Nile symptoms to contact their health care provider and mention any exposure to mosquitoes.

Roma High JROTC Program Holds Ceremony to Retire Old US Flags By: LTC Luis Barrera, USA Retired, Senior Army Instructor, and Roma High Army JROTC Instructor; Photo by Jesus Vidal, Roma High GTN & Graphic Arts Instructor The Roma High School U.S. Army JROTC held a flag retirement ceremony on April 12, 2022 at the Roma High School JROTC Pavilion. The Cadets collected more than 100 flags from Roma ISD schools, the VFW and its members, as well as from members of the surrounding communities. “We retire flags when they become worn or faded,” JROTC Cadet Battalion Commander Angela Gonzalez said. “They should be retired instead of thrown in the trash. When we retire flags, we treat them the same as we do veterans when they are laid to rest.”

She noted people are moved when they attend flag retirement ceremonies. She said it was an honor to be part of the ceremony. “I would like to reiterate, we cut the union from the stripes and then cut the stripes to render it not the USA flag any longer, and then place it in the fire” she explained . In attendance were members of

the VFW Post 9175 and members of the community. The Roma Fire Department was in attendance and on standby for any emergencies that could arise from the burn pit. The next Flag Retirement Ceremony hosted by the Roma High JROTC will be in spring 2023 so please save your older flags for the next ceremony.
