South Texas Health System Recognizes Starr County Roma High Gladiator Earns EMS Paramedics With Hometown Heroes Award District Discus Throw Title The STHS Hometown Heroes award is given monthly to exceptional first responders in the community Erick Ramirez and Victor Garza, who serve as paramedics with Starr County EMS, received the Hometown Heroes award from South Texas Health System during a small ceremony at Starr County Memorial Hospital on Friday, April 16, for going above and beyond the call of duty in their life-saving efforts on a trauma victim involved in a high-speed, T-bone collision. “I’m really honored to be presented with this award, but to be honest we do it from the heart,” asserts Ramirez, who has worked for Starr County EMS for eight years. “We’re not expecting anything in return; it feels good that you’re doing something right.” Last December, Ramirez and Garza, who has worked with Starr County EMS for three years, were driving their EMS truck back to their station when they happened to drive up to the accident scene. The pair rushed into action to check on the victims and render

aid. One of the drivers, who was pinned in the car, was suffering from agonal breathing. “You could tell in the eyes, it really looked like he wasn’t going to make it,” recalls Garza, who worked tirelessly with firefighters to remove the man, get him into the ambulance and rush him to South Texas Health System McAllen’s Level II Trauma Center. “It was pretty bad, but our instincts and training kicked in, and we just wanted to do everything we could to save this man’s life.” It’s that “perseverance and

stubbornness,” as described by former Starr County EMS paramedic and South Texas Health System Nursing Manager Joe Garza, that ultimately led to not only saving the man’s life, but preventing him from having any serious deficiencies following such a traumatic accident. “Having worked in EMS for many years, I have seen some horrible accidents. And, I know that when a patient is suffering from agonal breathing, the chances of survival are slim. But, HOMETOWN HEROES, page 3

The Rattlers, currently ranked 20th in one state 5-A poll, finished the 2021 district campaign with a 10-0 record, achieving their first district baseball title since 2012. Six of their district victories came about under the “10-run rule” in which games ended early when the margin was 10 runs or greater. After Friday’s game (April 16), the district championship trophy was presented to Head Coach Roque Cortinas by Rio Grande City CISD Athletic Director Rey Ramirez. Prior to the Martin contest Friday night, the Rattlers achieved a resounding 11-3 victory over the Mission Veterans Patriots on the road on Tuesday evening, April 13. The Rattlers won the outright District 30-5A title with a 10-0 record and eight victories of five runs or greater. They reached at least the second round of the state playoffs for three straight years from 2017-2019 before the 2020 season was canceled due to COVID-19 just prior to the start of district play. The Rattlers reached the third playoff round in 2019 before falling to Sharyland Pioneer, who eventually ascended to the state “final four” tournament, (By Kenneth Roberts, Freelance Writer) two games to one.

Journey Of Cancer

“You have cancer.” Three little words that will change the lives of your family forever. It’s terrifying, it’s bewildering and it is overwhelming. Cry a little, cry a lot. My beloved husband and my family strived to get through the initial shock and emotional reaction as quickly as we could. While we hoped and prayed for the best possible outcome, the harsh reality is that not everyone survives cancer. As our grandson Cayito would say, “Papo’s will to never quit was second to none”, and our oldest grandson Omi would always tell his Papo, “You are a true and courageous trooper.” He fought this battle with strength and courage.

It was a journey that our family set out together, a journey that with the compassion, care, love and prayers that our friends, the medical professionals and religious leaders entailed. Without the expertise, professionalism, the caring prayers and excellent care his life with us would have been cut short.

On behalf of the Salinas Family, we would like to extend our most sincere and heartfelt thanks to: • Dr. Ratmman, M.D. and staff, Thank you for the many years of excellent care. You are an amazing oncologist and we thank God for you and your caring heart. We are forever grateful. • Dr. Alberto Pena, M.D., Thank you for your excellent care and expertise throughout his journey with cancer. You are truly a remarkable doctor and professional that we hold the deepest respect for. • Dr. Gauri Kanhere, M.D. We cannot thank you enough for the excellent care that you gave to my husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. We were certain God led us to you. Words cannot describe how grateful we are. You are a truly remarkable doctor and professional that we respect and trust. We thank God for you. Thank you for who you are and for the brilliant doctor you are. Thank you for taking great care of my husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. • Starr County Memorial Hospital-Dr. Guerrero, M.D. (ER), Dr. Bernal, M.D., Dr. Paris, M.D. and all the staff. Thank you for you expert care and professionalism. Thank you so much for your kindness, sincere and caring concerns during my husband’s stay at the hospital. Mrs. Munoz, thank you for being the person you are. As the administrator of Starr County Memorial Hospital, you have deinitely set high standards of care with the hospital staff. • Starr County Memorial Hospital EMS-Thank you for the extra care, empathy and expertise when transferring my husband to and from the hospital. Your

My heartfelt thanks to my grandchildren Omar Arcadio, Arcadio Alonzo, Luis Carlos, Jorge Daniel and Christa Victoria. It was an honor to have you all, our beautiful grandchildren, as your Papo’s pallbearers. Your compassion, strength and love will never be forgotten. Thank you to my daughter Melissa, my son Arcadio, daughter-in-law Claudia,

compassion and devotion makes a big difference. • Thank you, Constancio Salinas and family, for making it possible to honor your beloved brother with the 21-gun salute. • Mark Olivarez, Thank you for organizing and making it possible to honor my husband, father, grandfather and father-in-law to be honored with the 21-gun salute and taps. • Deacon Romeo Garcia, Our sincere appreciation for delivering a beautiful service that truly honored our beloved husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. It gives us great comfort to know that after death comes eternal life where there is no tears and suffering. Your words were inspirational and truly honored. • Fidel Trevino, Thank you for your exceptional work. My husband’s tribute video was a true representation of his life and his love to his family and farm. • A Ray of Light Hospice, Thank you very much for the outstanding care and love that was given to my husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. His inal journey was handled with much love and gentleness. • Family and Friends, It’s hard to put into words the thanks we would like to give for all the help, beautiful lowers, food, your thoughtfulness and sympathy you have given us during this dificult time. We are very grateful for your support and friendship.

grandchildren and sister-in-law Lucy for showing your love and support during his battle with cancer. I will end this with a statement that our grandson Cayito stated during the eulogy, “I challenge everyone to look to that special person in your life and look at all the wonderful things you have learned from him or her, and

let them know how you feel. Let them know how special they are to you. Let them know how they have made your life better. Let them know. Let them know. Let them know.” We lost our Papo, but we will never lose what he taught us. You will never be forgotten and you will always be in our hearts and how we live our lives.

Forever in our hearts with love until we meet again,

Your wife Ruth and family

HOMETOWN HEROES Continued from Front Page as paramedics, it’s our duty to do everything we can to give someone a second chance at life. And that’s exactly what Erick Ramirez and Victor Garza did,” proclaims Garza, who nominated the duo for the Hometown Heroes award. “They really went that extra mile to stabilize the victim and get him to the hospital in that critical ‘golden hour.’” Clinicians have long suggested that trauma patients are most likely to survive if they receive medical and surgical treatment within one hour—the so called “golden hour.” And Ramirez and Garza arrived to South Texas Health System McAllen in exactly that time. He went straight from the ER to the operating room with a trauma surgeon and neurosurgeon, and ultimately walked out of the hospital with minor deficiencies. “The entire way to the hospital, I was just praying to God that he’d make it. Because all I could see was this man and his family members, who were standing outside of the

vehicle while we worked on him. He was a father and a husband,” says Ramirez. “These people depend on him, and so I just had to do my job to the best of my abilities to help him survive, and take him to the proper facility where he was ultimately going to get the care he needed. Originally they gave us a poor prognosis, so to see that he made it with minor

issues is incredible.” Ramirez and Garza are the first Starr County first responders to receive South Texas Health System’s Hometown Heroes award. For their life-saving efforts, they each received a plaque during the special ceremony that was held in front of their Starr County EMS colleagues and Starr Count Memorial Hospital peers.

ORACIÓN DE LA VIRGEN DE GUADALUPE

NOVENA “Miraculous Prayer” Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

Amen. Roma High JROTC Program Gets Back into Action at Revised Raider Event

By: LTC(R) Luis Barrera, Roma High took over 4 hours or more for teams team at a time completed all events JROTC Program Instructor, and photos to complete. In this new format one JROTC, page 13 by Aylin Garza. Roma High Class of 2020 & JROTC Program Alum The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many of us to reflect on what’s important in our life: friends, family, health, and purpose. During this challenging year and through many unthinkable events, we in the Roma High JROTC Program have been reminded time and again what JROTC Raider lifestyle is all about - being mentally and physically fit. The students were missing social interaction, working out as a team, and the comradery they shared. The Roma High School JROTC, with parental consent, came back into action recently and were raring to go like never before. The cadets were asking for events to try and get back to some kind of routine. The Roma Gladiator Battalion took up the challenge to compete in the La Copa Gladiator Raider Challenge competition on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at La Copa Ranch, Encino, TX, hosted by the US Army Recruiting Company and La Copa Ranch. This Raider Challenge had to be different than previous ones due the recommended distancing factors between the teams to ensure social distancing. The old version of a Raider Event was to move from event to event and wait your turn in line in close proximity to others, but this Raider was time consuming and

Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities - Stewardship Week April 25 - May 2, 2021 Water Conservation District has partnered with the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board, Association of Texas Soil & Water Conservation Districts, The Starr County Soil and Texas A&M Forest Service,

Texas Wildlife Association, and Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association to highlight Soil and Water Stewardship Week and the importance of voluntary land stewardship in Texas. The

statewide campaign is April 25 through May 2, 2021, and the focus this year is “Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities.” Forest landowners arc an important part of Texas agriculture and the stewards of this resource. They work closely with their local Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) and the Texas A&M Forest Service (TFS) district office to implement conservation practices that promote the health and sustainability of forests and forest ecosystems. These privately-owned forests contribute significantly to the Texas economy and provide numerous environmental and social benefits. To truly have a healthy forest, proper management and conservation is needed. Thankfully, many forest landowners in Texas are implementing beneficial conservation practices such as strategic tree plantings, prescribed burning, brush

management to remove diseased trees and invasive species, native grass management, wildlife management, and even bee propagation to stimulate pollination. In certain instances, livestock can be included as part of a prescribed grazing plan to strategically manage the leaf litter, soil, and underbrush in a forested area, which can ultimately assist in preventing wildfires. Without these sustainable management practices, problems such as soil erosion, insect and disease outbreaks, invasive species encroachment, declines in biodiversity, and even catastrophic wildfires can occur. Trees filter air, reduce ambient temperatures, absorb carbon dioxide, and produce oxygen. They help conserve energy by casting summer shade and blocking winter winds. Tree roots hold the soil in place and fight erosion. Trees absorb and store rainwater, reducing runoff and sediments after storms,

which also helps recharge groundwater supply and prevent flooding. Essential products made from trees include paper products and lumber. Trees also offer habitat and food to birds, insects, lichen, fungi, mammals, and reptiles. Finally, trees increase our quality of life through a relaxing effect, reducing stress. This campaign aims to bring more awareness and support to voluntary land stewardship because the way we manage our resources on private lands directly impacts our forestry resources. The Starr County Soil and Water Conservation District is proud to collaborate with conservation partners across Texas to promote the importance of land stewardship. The teams included 6 boys and 4 girls, with the format erasing the time teams spent on the ground in a normal Raider Challenge. Teams finished the events, hydrated, ate snacks, changed into school travel uniforms and travel back to their school. All participants and hosting personnel were required to have a COVID test done a week prior to the competition in order to participate in the challenge. All events were held out outdoors in a beautiful spring morning in a South Texas Ranch.

Thank you, St. Jude, for the hope you offer to all who believe in you.

Now more than ever, we will keep using this new Raider Blitz Challenge format that will humble the most physically fit, inspire the students to stay fit, teach the Cadets to be motivated and learn, workout more often, and be prepared do more physical events. Competing in a Raider Challenge does all of these things and more. If you are interested in taking up

the physical and mental challenges offered by our Program, talk to your local JROTC instructors for more information! Special thanks go out to the Roma High School Administration, Roma ISD Transportation Department, TAMUK ROTC, Gladiator JROTC Alumni and all the Cadets from the different schools that came out to this strenuous competition.
