•Give students extra room and don’t assume they are paying attention to traffic. Students are frequently distracted by mobile devices or listening on electronic devices and may not be paying attention to their surroundings.

•Reduce your speed when you spot a school bus and know children may unexpectedly step on August 17, 2022. The documents may be obtained from RGV Reprographics located 519 South Broadway, McAllen, Texas (Phone: 956-686-1525) upon the deposit of a refundable check in the amount of $100.00 payable to South Texas College. •Know laws regarding school buses. According to Texas law, if a bus has alternating flashing red signals visible from the front or rear, drivers MUST stop before reaching the bus. Drivers can only proceed if the flashing lights are no longer activated, the driver signals you to proceed or the bus has resumed driving. Approaching drivers do NOT have to stop for a school bus that is operating a visual signal if the road is separated by a physical barrier or an intervening space. If a highway is only divided by a left-turn lane, it is not considered divided and drivers must stop for school

•Remember, texting while driving is illegal in Texas. DPS would also like to remind students, parents, teachers and school administrators about some other safety tools available during the school year. The iWatchTexas program is a critical resource for reporting suspicious activity in schools and communities in order to help prevent dangerous attacks. Incoming freshmen volunteer and get first taste of life on STC campuses

“We’re trying to encourage our students to not only go to class and go home. We want them to be a part of the campus,” Tello said. “We want them to earn some volunteer hours in our pantry and participate in activities that we can all enjoy with each other.”

Alaiza Cantu,18, who is also from Roma, says she realized from an early age that students there needed to be more educated so they can begin making a difference.“Beingfrom Roma, I am hoping to one day see an improvement in my community when it comes to education,” Cantu said. “There are a lot of kids in Roma who need some extra attention. They need to be more educated so they can improve the community. I have seen the teachers work extra hard in my community and they really do inspire kids and motivate them. They do a lot for the kids and those same kids are going to be the next generation who will learn even more than what we did growing upDuringthere.” the month-long camp, freshmen also gained valuable lessons in community service. “The students are learning how to be future leaders,” said Andres Tello, student activities specialist at the Starr County Campus. “We provide a little bit of knowledge from each department within our campuses and then we provide guest speakers including leaders in our community as well as a community service component. We recently took a trip to the RGV Food Bank in Pharr where they were able to gain some community service hours helping those in need.”STC students interested in participating in future events can always visit the Student Activities and Wellness website at www.life.southtexascollege. edu/ for the latest on campus activities including student events, orientation, intramural sports, Student Government Association and student food pantry. Studies by higher education experts show that an involved student is a successful student. Students who got involved on campus also had higher rates of retention and graduation as well as higher GPAs.

They all inspired her to study Early Elementary Education with the hopes of entering a career in teaching. “I’ve lived in Roma my whole life. All my teachers were from the same community and that was important because we all had that in common,” Aleman said. “They taught me everything they know, and I will teach everything I know to my future students in return. That’s how we build our community.”

STARR COUNTY TOWN CRIER, AUGUST 17, 2022, PAGE 11

Groups of eager incoming South Texas College students from Pecan, Mid-Valley and Starr County campuses have been taking part in a month-long camp dedicated to future leaders in training at the college. As first-year students who are set to begin classes in the fall, they received an inside look into the college as well as resources available to them so they can make the most of their time while attending STC. Alaiza Cantu and Alicia Aleman were two students among a group of about 10 from surrounding communities in Starr County who participated in STC’s Future Jaguars Leadership Camp. Aleman, 18, on the verge of beginning her first semester at STC said her entrance into the college was greatly influenced by her mentors, by the Roma community and the needs of the people there.
